The Investment Casualties Of War: Global Impacts Of Armed Conflict On Foreign Direct Investment Inflows, Reinhard J. Cate Mr. May 2016

The Investment Casualties Of War: Global Impacts Of Armed Conflict On Foreign Direct Investment Inflows, Reinhard J. Cate Mr.

Master's Theses

Abstract: Involvement in the outbreak of an armed conflict can present a variety of potential risks to an involved nation’s economy. In this paper I examine if one one of those risks, specifically that a new war could scare away foreign investment actually occurs and whether the intensity of the conflict increases or lessens the potential impact. Using ordinary least squares on panel data from 1966 to 2015, I examine the short and long term impacts of armed conflict on global foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows using two measures of conflict intensity: Large conflicts or ‘wars’, with 1000 or more …

Does Infant Formula Availability Reduce Breastfeeding?, Ingvild Madsen Lampe May 2016

Does Infant Formula Availability Reduce Breastfeeding?, Ingvild Madsen Lampe

Master's Theses

Abstract: Several key studies highlight the importance of breastfeeding and there is a broad consensus that it plays a crucial role for a child's health and cognitive development. This is especially true for the poor in developing countries, where vulnerable infants' access to proper nutrition is vital. We investigate the effect of introducing infant formula into a market on changes in breastfeeding patterns. Using the Demographic Health Surveys and annual reports from the baby food industry between 1981 and 2002 in 11 tropical countries, we find evidence that import of infant formula significantly reduces breastfeeding duration. The effects are stronger …

Stop And Frisk Redux: Analysis Of Racial Bias In New York City, Abraham Gutman May 2016

Stop And Frisk Redux: Analysis Of Racial Bias In New York City, Abraham Gutman

Theses and Dissertations

Stop and Frisk is a policing practice used commonly in NYC. For some, equal arrest rates for non-white and white pedestrians indicate no racial bias. I challenge that conclusion and argue that heterogeneity masks lower arrest rates of non-white pedestrians. I conclude that Stop and Frisk is an uneven policing practice that carries racial bias.

Dynamic Behavior And Player Types In Majoritarian Multi-Battle Contests, Alan Gelder, Dan Kovenock May 2016

Dynamic Behavior And Player Types In Majoritarian Multi-Battle Contests, Alan Gelder, Dan Kovenock

ESI Working Papers

In a dynamic contest where it is costly to compete, a player who is behind must decide whether to surrender or to keep fighting in the face of bleak odds. We experimentally examine the game theoretic prediction of last stand behavior in a multi-battle contest with a winning prize and losing penalty, as well as the contrasting prediction of surrendering in the corresponding contest with no penalty. We find varied evidence in support of these hypotheses in the aggregated data, but more conclusive evidence when scrutinizing individual player behavior. Players’ realized strategies tend to conform to one of several “types”. …

Essays On Economic Decision Making, Hee Chun Kim May 2016

Essays On Economic Decision Making, Hee Chun Kim

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation consists of three chapters and I take different approach in each chapter to investigate economic decision making behavior. The first chapter analyzes individuals strategic decisionmaking when players have replaceable identities and private information in a repeated prisoners dillmma game. The second chapter studies individuals non-strategic decision making when she has incomplete information about her underlying preference in a sequential choice situation. The third chapter experimentally examines a link between an individuals strategic thinking and nonstrategic decision making in a setting designed to elicit beliefs about independent random variables. In the first chapter, I focus on strategic decision making …

Essays On Theories Of Social Influence, Jiemai Wu May 2016

Essays On Theories Of Social Influence, Jiemai Wu

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation studies strategic social influence from a theoretical perspective. The first chapter extends Bikhchandani, Hirshleifer and Welchs informational cascade model by introducing two types of players: experts with high signal accuracy and laymen with low signal accuracy. If a small enough fraction of laymen are present in the population, the probability of having a correct cascade is strictly higher than if no laymen are present. This is because the presence of laymen makes experts less eager to follow suit, which increases the amount of private information revealed. The second chapter asks the following question: when a decision makers (DM) …

Essays On Labor Economics, Sunha Myong

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Chapter 1: Need-Based Aid from Selective Universities and the Achievement Gap between the Rich and Poor I study the role of need-based aid from selective universities in closing the achievement gap between the rich and poor high school students. I focus on the incentive aspect of need-based aid that can change high school student's effort choices. The impact of increasing need-based aid depends on the extent of borrowing constraints and how competition affects the relative performance of low- and high-income students. I develop a structural model of students' learning, application, and admission processes, and estimate it with the Education Longitudinal …

Essays On Inflation Targeting And Credit Markets, Jundong Zhang May 2016

Essays On Inflation Targeting And Credit Markets, Jundong Zhang

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The first chapter of the dissertation studies quantitatively and systematically the impacts of a wide range of inflation targets on credit markets, on social welfare and on wealth inequality. To this end, I develop a model featuring market segmentation, market incompleteness and limited commitment to financial contracts. Under incomplete markets, moderate inflation alleviates frictions in credit markets and thus improves social welfare. After calibrating the model to recent U.S. data, I report four major findings. First, as the inflation target increases, endogenous debt limits follow a humped shape with a flat tail. This coincides with the empirical relationship between inflation …

Essays On Macroeconomics, Duksang Cho May 2016

Essays On Macroeconomics, Duksang Cho

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation is centered on economic heterogeneity endogenously derived from market imperfections or changes in technology. By introducing specific assumptions that capture a market imperfection or a change in technology, I study how the economic realities can affect resource distributions and aggregate outcomes in an equilibrium. Chapter 1 studies the economic impacts of business groups by focusing on their pyramidal ownership structure given capital market imperfections. An entrepreneur can alleviate financial frictions by creating a pyramidal business group in which a parent firm offers its subsidiary firm internal equity finance. This endogenous creation of pyramidal business groups can beget asymmetric …

Essays On Liquidity, Banking, And Monetary Policy, Jaevin Park May 2016

Essays On Liquidity, Banking, And Monetary Policy, Jaevin Park

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The first chapter develops a new theory of bank capital requirements. A general equilibrium banking model is constructed in which deposit claims backed by bank assets support secured credit arrangements with limited commitment. Bank capital, a contingent claim on bank assets, is costly to hold when the value of assets is insufficient to support an efficient credit arrangement. However, if there is non-diversifiable aggregate risk, requiring banks to hold additional bank capital in the high-return state can be beneficial since it can relax the limited commitment constraint in the low-return state by affecting asset prices. Thus bank capital requirements can …

Chapter 1 studies the role of fertility motives in womens HIV risk in …

Essays In Macroeconomics, Economic Development, And Growth, Lin Shao May 2016

Essays In Macroeconomics, Economic Development, And Growth, Lin Shao

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Chapter 1: Trade credit in production chains In an economy where production takes place in multiple stages and is subject to financial frictions, how firms finance intermediate inputs matters for aggregate outcomes. This paper focuses on trade credit the lending and borrowing of input goods between firms in a production chain and quantifies its aggregate impact. Motivated by empirical evidence, our model shows how trade credit alleviates financial frictions through a process of credit redistribution and creation, thus leading to a higher output level in the steady state. However, the flow of trade credit is prone to disruptions when financial …

Essays On Macroeconomics And Monetary Economics, Fatih Tuluk May 2016

Essays On Macroeconomics And Monetary Economics, Fatih Tuluk

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

My essays that are captured in two chapters of my dissertation focus on shadow banking system, collateralized debt arrangement and monetary policy. The first chapter studies the role of shadow banking in the recent financial crisis, the relationship between shadow banking and traditional banking, and it investigates the monetary policy reaction to overcome the financial frictions associated with the scarcity of collateral or shortages of safe assets that naturally led to the liquidity constraints. On the other hand, the second chapter studies the role of housing as a collateral or as a medium of exchange and it explores how the …

The Unmaking Of An Embargo: How Policy Entrepreneurs At The Individual, State, And National Levels Are Creating New Paths For Policy Change In Modern United States-Cuba Relations, Kyle C. Griffith May 2016

The Unmaking Of An Embargo: How Policy Entrepreneurs At The Individual, State, And National Levels Are Creating New Paths For Policy Change In Modern United States-Cuba Relations, Kyle C. Griffith

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Throughout the Cold War antagonisms of the twentieth century, the United States (US) championed greater global economic cooperation and an embrace of free market principles to encourage economic growth. Post World War II, passage of the Bretton Woods Agreement institutionalized this political agenda effectively establishing the rules of global commerce. The result has been increased economic participation and trade liberalization. One of the last remaining vestiges of Cold War hostility and impediments to trade is the US economic embargo of Cuba, in place since 1960. Increasingly seen as a policy failure, the US has taken steps in the past two …

An Exploration Of Adolescent Obesity Determinants, Anastasia King Smith May 2016

An Exploration Of Adolescent Obesity Determinants, Anastasia King Smith

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In 2010, approximately two-thirds of adults and one-fifth of the adolescent population in the United States were considered either overweight or obese, resulting in the United States having the highest per capita obesity rate among all OECD countries. A considerable body of literature regarding health behavior, health outcomes, and public policy exists on what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers an obesity epidemic. In response to the growing problem of childhood obesity, the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004 (CNRA), which required that schools participating in the National School Lunch Program and/or School Breakfast Program have …

Let There Be Light: Social Enterprise, Solar Power, And Sustainable Development, Tonia Warnecke May 2016

Let There Be Light: Social Enterprise, Solar Power, And Sustainable Development, Tonia Warnecke

Faculty Publications

Energy poverty is a major problem in the developing world, with nearly 1.3 billion people lacking household electricity. Strikingly, the electrification rate is not only low, but is falling in many countries as population growth outpaces efforts to give more people access to electricity. Seizing the opportunities presented by rapid changes in technology and the availability of renewable energy at continually falling costs, social enterprises have begun to light the darkness and fill in the gap between the public and private provision of electricity. We review the extent of energy poverty and explain why neither the public, nor the private …

Immune Function In Amazonian Horticulturalists, Aaron D. Blackwell, Benjamin C. Trumble, Ivan Maldonado Suarez, Jonathan Stieglitz, Bret Beheim, J. Josh Snodgrass, Hillard Kaplan, Michael Gurven

ESI Publications

Background—Amazonian populations are exposed to diverse parasites and pathogens, including protozoal, bacterial, fungal, and helminthic infections. Yet much of our understanding of the immune system is based on industrialised populations where these infections are relatively rare.

Aim—We examine distributions and age-related differences in 22 measures of immune function for Bolivian forager-horticulturalists and US and European populations.

Subjects and Methods—Subjects were 6,338 Tsimane aged 0–90 years. Blood samples collected between 2004–2014 were analysed for 5-part blood differentials, C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and total immunoglobulins E, G, A, and M. Flow cytometry was used to quantify naive …
