The Economics Of Adaptation To Climate Change In Coasts And Oceans: Literature Review, Policy Implications And Research Agenda, Charles S. Colgan Nov 2016

The Economics Of Adaptation To Climate Change In Coasts And Oceans: Literature Review, Policy Implications And Research Agenda, Charles S. Colgan

Journal of Ocean and Coastal Economics

Sea level rise and other effects of climate change on oceans and coasts around the world are major reasons to halt the emissions of greenhouse gases to the maximum extent. But historical emissions and sea level rise have already begun so steps to adapt to a world where shorelines, coastal populations, and economies could be dramatically altered are now essential. This presents significant economic challenges in four areas. (1) Large expenditures for adaptation steps may be required but the extent of sea level rise and thus the expenditures are unknowable at this point. Traditional methods for comparing benefits and costs …

The Effects Of Review Prohibition Periods On Video Game Consumer Purchasing Decisions, Richard J. Applin Nov 2016

The Effects Of Review Prohibition Periods On Video Game Consumer Purchasing Decisions, Richard J. Applin

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Video game developers typically prohibit media outlets from publishing reviews of upcoming video games until some specified date. This study hypothesizes that review prohibition periods that give consumers relatively little time to digest reviews result in consumers being more likely to have a negative perception of an upcoming game – thus, resulting in lower initial sales. To test this, a number of video game releases from the past decade are considered in order to model the extent to which initial sales of a game are a function of review prohibition periods while holding a variety of other variables constant. The …

Inorganic Growth In The Organic Food Industry: Examining Barriers To Entry And Economic Rents, Jaime Elizabeth Staengel Nov 2016

Inorganic Growth In The Organic Food Industry: Examining Barriers To Entry And Economic Rents, Jaime Elizabeth Staengel

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Recently in the organic food industry, more lines of organic food are being introduced in stores as demand for organic products continues to grow. The organic food industry has witnessed high price premiums in the past which, according to economic theory, would in a perfectly competitive market attract entry until those price premiums decreased to the point where economic profits were zero. However, the USDA’s National Organic Certification Cost Share Program, or NOCCP, was introduced in its current form in 2009 and offers reimbursement for farmers who are already certified with certification or recertification costs for their organic farming operation. …

The Effects of Charities on Rural Economic Development: An Analysis of the Outcomes of Charity Involvement and the Reduction of Local Economic Growth

Joshua Drouin Dr. David Eaton

This research examines the impact of charities and NGOs on economic development in areas served by the charitable groups. We will look at both long term NGO and charitable involvement, as well as disaster related efforts. By drawing on the comparisons we can empirically test the Samaritan’s Dilemma put forth by James Buchannan. This hypothesis suggests that while charity actions can help in the short term, they can lead to long term …

Does Gentrification Help Or Harm A Community?, Hannah Sparkman Nov 2016

Does Gentrification Help Or Harm A Community?, Hannah Sparkman

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Gentrification is the process of renovating and improving housing and business districts so that it conforms to the middle-class taste. Gentrification is most frequently affecting predominantly black neighborhoods across the United States. This phenomenon is claimed to be the cause of the displacement of residents in poorer communities and of a cultural shift in neighborhoods with deep rooted histories. It could also be the case that gentrification is mainly hurting the long-time residents of these neighborhoods rather than hurting the actual neighborhoods themselves. Research on this topic includes, but is not limited to, various demographic data including before and after …

Growth References For Tsimane Forager-Horticulturalists Of The Bolivian Amazon, Aaron D. Blackwell, Samuel S. Urlacher, Bret Beheim, Christopher Von Rueden, Adrian V. Jaeggi, Jonathan Stieglitz, Benjamin C. Trumble, Michael Gurven, Hillard Kaplan Nov 2016

Growth References For Tsimane Forager-Horticulturalists Of The Bolivian Amazon, Aaron D. Blackwell, Samuel S. Urlacher, Bret Beheim, Christopher Von Rueden, Adrian V. Jaeggi, Jonathan Stieglitz, Benjamin C. Trumble, Michael Gurven, Hillard Kaplan

ESI Publications

Objectives—Growth standards and references currently used to assess population and individual health are derived primarily from urban populations, including few individuals from indigenous or subsistence groups. Given environmental and genetic differences, growth may vary in these populations. Thus, there is a need to assess whether international standards are appropriate for all populations, and to produce population specific references if growth differs. Here we present and assess growth references for the Tsimane, an indigenous population of Bolivian forager-horticulturalists.

Methods—Mixed cross-sectional/longitudinal anthropometrics (9,614 individuals; 30,118 observations; ages 0–29 years) were used to generate centile curves and Lambda-Mu-Sigma (LMS) tables for …

Winning And Other Determinants Of Revenue In North America's Major Professional Sports Leagues, John Charles Bradbury Nov 2016

Winning And Other Determinants Of Revenue In North America's Major Professional Sports Leagues, John Charles Bradbury

Faculty Articles

This study investigates recent determinants of revenue in North America’s four major professional sports leagues. Estimates reveal that revenue is positively associated with winning in baseball (MLB), basketball (NBA), and hockey (NHL), but not in football (NFL). The returns to winning are not diminishing as commonly assumed, which casts doubt on the uncertainty of outcome hypothesis, and differences across leagues are consistent with revenue sharing arrangements. Estimates also indicate a strong negative relationship between stadium age and revenue, which is consistent with observed rapid replacement of sports stadiums. The results have several important implications for economic models of sports leagues.

Salivary Microbiomes Of Indigenous Tsimane Mothers And Infants Are Distinct Despite Frequent Premastication, Cliff S. Han, Melanie Ann Martin, Armand E.K. Dichosa, Ashlynn R. Daughton, Seth Frietze, Hillard Kaplan, Michael D. Gurven, Joe Alcock Nov 2016

Salivary Microbiomes Of Indigenous Tsimane Mothers And Infants Are Distinct Despite Frequent Premastication, Cliff S. Han, Melanie Ann Martin, Armand E.K. Dichosa, Ashlynn R. Daughton, Seth Frietze, Hillard Kaplan, Michael D. Gurven, Joe Alcock

ESI Publications

Background. Premastication, the transfer of pre-chewed food, is a common infant and young child feeding practice among the Tsimane, forager-horticulturalists living in the Bolivian Amazon. Research conducted primarily with Western populations has shown that infants harbor distinct oral microbiota from their mothers. Premastication, which is less common in these populations, may influence the colonization and maturation of infant oral microbiota, including via transmission of oral pathogens. We collected premasticated food and saliva samples from Tsimane mothers and infants (9-24 months of age) to test for evidence of bacterial transmission in premasticated foods and overlap in maternal and infant salivary …

Economic Analysis With Systematically Biased Agents, Mark Schneider Nov 2016

Economic Analysis With Systematically Biased Agents, Mark Schneider

ESI Working Papers

A tenet of behavioral economics is that biases are systematic and should have visible effects in economic applications. Expected utility maximization has been widely applied in economic analysis, but progress has been slower incorporating 'systematically biased' agents into applications involving risk. This contrasts with the widespread application of present-biased preferences in intertemporal settings. To address this gap, we advocate a model of quasi-rank dependent probability weighting as a natural analog to quasi-hyperbolic discounting for decisions under risk. The model satisfies stochastic dominance and transitivity and transforms individual rather than cumulative probabilities. We illustrate the model’s tractability in several economic applications.

Crafting Chaos: The Classification Of Unilateral Transfers Under The Current Account At Bretton Woods And Its Impact On Remittances To The Indian State Of Kerala, Anish Gawande Nov 2016

Crafting Chaos: The Classification Of Unilateral Transfers Under The Current Account At Bretton Woods And Its Impact On Remittances To The Indian State Of Kerala, Anish Gawande

Undergraduate Economic Review

This essay aims to analyse the classification of unilateral transfers under the current account at Bretton Woods despite significant opposition from larger delegations of major Allied powers, bringing to the forefront the global liquidity of remittances in the post-War years permitted by their fully currency convertible nature. Using the example of the Indian State of Kerala, this paper charts the relevance of their sustained uninterrupted flow to their subsequent exponential growth in the last three decades, using the case study as a pivot to argue for better policy measures that maximise their multiplier effect.

Military Service: Migration And A Path To Middle Class Status, Harry Franqui-Rivera Nov 2016

Military Service: Migration And A Path To Middle Class Status, Harry Franqui-Rivera

CUNY Centro, The Center for Puerto Rican Studies

The role of military service in spreading the Puerto Rican diaspora is an understudied phenomenon of relevance for understanding the Puerto Rican migration and its settlement patterns in the U.S. Active duty military personnel, veterans, and their families have dispersed the Puerto Rican population beyond what has been considered as traditional centers of Puerto Rican migration. New York, Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts continue to host the largest populations of Puerto Ricans stateside. But large Puerto Rican communities have formed and are thriving around military bases in el Nuevo South (the former original confederate states), the Midwest, and Western …

Evaluating The Conditions For China’S 4th Industrial Revolution Plan: A Neo-Schumpeterian Analysis, Hing Lee Henry Chan Nov 2016

Evaluating The Conditions For China’S 4th Industrial Revolution Plan: A Neo-Schumpeterian Analysis, Hing Lee Henry Chan

Dissertations and Theses Collection

After 33 years (1979-2011) of close to double digit average annual economic growth, the Chinese economy decelerated to a mid-high single digit growth of approximately 7% per year since 2012. The country is currently facing the typical economic transition challenge of moving from being a high-middle income to high income economy. In response to this economic transition, the government launched an industrial innovation program that corresponds to the 4th Industrial Revolution in 2015-Made in China 2025, hoping to stabilize and rejuvenate China’s growth momentum through innovation. This thesis examines the pre-conditions for the successful implementation of this plan using the …

The Interest Rate Effect On Private Saving: Alternative Perspectives, Joshua Aizenman, Yin-Wong Cheung, Hiro Ito Nov 2016

The Interest Rate Effect On Private Saving: Alternative Perspectives, Joshua Aizenman, Yin-Wong Cheung, Hiro Ito

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Using an uneven panel of 135 countries from 1995 to 2014, we investigate the link between interest rates and private saving, and focus on whether the interest rate effect is dominated by the income (i.e., negative) or the substitution (i.e., positive) effect. With the baseline estimation, we find that the real interest rate has the substitution effect on private saving only for a full-country sample and a group of Asian economies. We also examine if low real - or nominal - interest rates have any impact on the link between the real interest rate and the private saving rate. We …

Product Variety, Across-Market Demand Heterogeneity, And The Value Of Online Retail, Thomas W. Quan, Kevin R. Williams Nov 2016

Product Variety, Across-Market Demand Heterogeneity, And The Value Of Online Retail, Thomas W. Quan, Kevin R. Williams

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Online retail gives consumers access to an astonishing variety of products. However, the additional value created by this variety depends on the extent to which local retailers already satisfy local demand. To quantify the gains and account for local demand, we use detailed data from an online retailer and propose methodology to address a common issue in such data - sparsity of local sales due to sampling and a significant number of local zeros. Our estimates indicate products face substantial demand heterogeneity across markets; as a result, we find gains from online variety that are 30% lower than previous studies.

Three Essays On The Theory Of Money And Financial Institutions Essay 2: The Exchange Economy, Money, And Markets, Martin Shubik Nov 2016

Three Essays On The Theory Of Money And Financial Institutions Essay 2: The Exchange Economy, Money, And Markets, Martin Shubik

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This essay is the second of three. The first is nontechnical and in part autobiographical describing the evolution of my approach to developing a micro economic theory of money and financial institutions. This essay is devoted to a mathematical sketch of a closed economic exchange system with general equilibrium GE and rational expectations RE viewed game theoretically. It squeezes the last drop out of statics and an illusory dynamics in the form of the RE extension of GE with no other externalities beyond money and markets. The third essay builds on process models adding uncertainty, innovation, an active government, nonsymmetric information …

The Identification And Estimation Of A Large Factor Model With Structural Instability, Badi H. Baltagi, Chihwa Kao, Fa Wang Nov 2016

The Identification And Estimation Of A Large Factor Model With Structural Instability, Badi H. Baltagi, Chihwa Kao, Fa Wang

Center for Policy Research

This paper tackles the identification and estimation of a high dimensional factor model with unknown number of latent factors and a single break in the number of factors and/or factor loadings occurring at unknown common date. First, we propose a least squares estimator of the change point based on the second moments of estimated pseudo factors and show that the estimation error of the proposed estimator is Op(1). We also show that the proposed estimator has some degree of robustness to misspecification of the number of pseudo factors. With the estimated change point plugged in, consistency of the estimated number …

The Health Care Expenditure And Income: A Global Perspective, Badi H. Baltagi, Raffaele Lagravinese, Francesco Moscone, Elisa Tosetti

Center for Policy Research

This paper investigates the long-run economic relationship between health care expenditure and income in the world using data on 167 countries over the period 1995-2012, collected from the World Bank data set. The analysis is carried using panel data methods that allow one to account for unobserved heterogeneity, temporal persistence, and cross-section dependence in the form of either a common factor model or a spatial process. We estimate a global measure of income elasticity using all countries in the sample, and for sub-groups of countries, depending on their geo-political area and income. Our findings suggest that at the global level, …

The Public Interest And Mongolian Digital Television Transition, Undrah Baasanjav Nov 2016

The Public Interest And Mongolian Digital Television Transition, Undrah Baasanjav

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Since 2010 Mongolian television has been in transition from analogue to digital.

This article introduces the process of digital transition of television, and then

discusses challenges television stations face in terms of the audio-visual market and

policies. The Mongolian media market has structural constraints typical to those

in the small media states. In addition, new challenges like the financial dependency

on the mining sector tax, an unsustainable number of politically affiliated

commercial television stations, and the remnants of socialist institutional routines

in media organizations also shape the television sector in Mongolia. The study

also explores the state of public interest …

Smarter Banking: Blockchain Technology In The Indian Banking System, Suparna Dhar, Indranil Bose

Asian Management Insights

Indian banks are currently experiencing poor performance when it comes to debt risk. Burdened with high non-performing loans (NPL), they are putting at risk the funds of investors as well as India’s industrial and economic growth. In addition, the loan management process itself is riddled with inefficiencies. To overcome them, we propose to use blockchain technology.
