Feeding Peace: An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Food Insecurity And Violence, Emily Blankenberger
Feeding Peace: An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Food Insecurity And Violence, Emily Blankenberger
Student Research – Stevenson Center
Violence has increased drastically over the last few years. Research has shown that a more violent population leads to an area with unpredictability which is linked with lower GDPs and higher amounts of instability. This paper attempts to address the effect of food insecurity on violence within a population. Using data from World Bank and the Global Peace Index it is believed that there is a positive correlation/causation of food insecurity on violence throughout the world. The paper will look at the aggregate effects caused by food insecurity on violence by looking at over 160 countries during a six year …
The Financial Power Of The Powerless: Socio-Economic Status And Interest Rates Under Weak Rule Of Law, Timur Kuran, Jared Rubin
The Financial Power Of The Powerless: Socio-Economic Status And Interest Rates Under Weak Rule Of Law, Timur Kuran, Jared Rubin
ESI Publications
In advanced economies interest rates vary inversely with the borrower's socio-economic status, which itself depends inversely on default risk. These relationships depend on the impartiality of the law. Where the law is markedly biased in favour of certain groups, the latter will pay a surcharge for capital. Legal power, as measured by privileges before the law, thus undermines financial power, the capacity to borrow cheaply. Developing this argument, this paper also tests it through judicial records from Ottoman Istanbul, 1602-1799. Three privileged Ottoman groups—men, Muslims, and titled elites—all paid relatively high interest rates conditional on various loan characteristics.

Part 1: Life In The Slower Lane: The Hampton Roads Economy, Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University
State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
Our regional economy is on track in 2016 to record a “real” (after inflation) economic growth rate of only 1.20 percent – well below our 2.60 percent average economic growth rate over the past 30 years. We have yet to recover all of the jobs we lost in the Great Recession. The outlook for 2017 is not much better.

Part 2: The Hotel Industry: The United States, Virginia, And Hampton Roads, Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University
State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
Since 2000, hotel revenue as a percentage of personal income has declined in Virginia and Hampton Roads. Declining federal spending is the primary reason.

Part 3: Prisons And Prisoners: The Virginia Way And The Alternatives, Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University
State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
Virginia imprisons large numbers of people; this is expensive. Economic analysis suggests that we would save money if we did not imprison so many people, redefined what constitutes a felony and gave more attention to preparing prisoners for re-entry into society.

Part 4: The Rise Of Single-Earner Households In Virginia: Why It Matters, Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University
State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
Almost one-third of all households in Hampton Roads are “nonfamily,” in the sense that they are not headed by two married individuals. More than 40 percent of all births now occur out of wedlock and the number of older single people has skyrocketed. Both public and private programs and policies have not kept pace with these developments and are in need of revision.

Part 5: The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender And Queer Community In Hampton Roads, Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University
State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
A 2012-2014 Gallup Poll reported that 4.4 percent of the population of Hampton Roads is LGBTQ in orientation. Available data suggest that LGBTQ women fare relatively better economically speaking than LGBTQ men. Norfolk and Virginia Beach are viewed as the region’s friendliest cities for members of the LGBTQ community.

Part 6: Will Robots Take Your Job? A Look At Virginia's Opportunities And Vulnerabilities, Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University
State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
A recent study suggested that 47 percent of all jobs in the United States are at risk of being eliminated by automation. The jobs most vulnerable are those that involve repetitive tasks and relatively little judgment. Those holding these jobs can be replaced by robots or machines utilizing artificial intelligence.

Part 7: Traffic Congestion In Hampton Roads: Myths And Realities, Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University
State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads
Sixty-five percent of job holders in Hampton Roads cross a city or county boundary when they go to work. Many encounter traffic congestion as they do so, but the level of this congestion has increased only modestly in recent years. Major road improvements seldom change this situation very much because drivers soon redistribute themselves in response to the improvements.

Cost Of Living, Healthy Food Acquisition, And The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Sanjay Basu, Christopher Wimer, Hilary K. Seligman
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
We tested the hypothesis that high costs of living, such as from high housing rents, reduce the healthfulness of food acquisitions. Using the National Household Food Acquisition and Purchase Survey (2012-13), we examined the relationships between cost of living and food acquisition patterns among both SNAP participants and non-participants (N = 5,414 individuals from households participating in SNAP, 3,863 individuals from non-participating households <185% of the federal poverty threshold, and 5,036 individuals from non-participating households >185% of the federal poverty threshold). Indices for cost of living included county-level Regional Price Parities for major classes of expenditures and the geographic adjustment to the Supplemental Poverty Measure, which is based on rent prices. Effects Of Federal Grant Money On Economic Measures In The Community, Andrea L. Miller
Effects Of Federal Grant Money On Economic Measures In The Community, Andrea L. Miller
Honors Undergraduate Theses
With the concentration of poverty increasing throughout the United States (Kneebone, 2014) there has been a recent emphasis on mixed-income housing as a means to alleviate this issue. By creating housing in one area with pricing for different income levels it is assumed that the burden imposed by concentrated poverty will be lowered. Many years and many dollars later however, the results of mixed-income housing projects on low-income residents seem to be mixed – while some projects have found success, others seem to suggest that it has little to no effect. The federal program HOPE VI is one example of …

Leadership Positioning Among U.S. Firms Investing In China, Rossitza B. Wooster, Donna L. Paul
Leadership Positioning Among U.S. Firms Investing In China, Rossitza B. Wooster, Donna L. Paul
Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study investigates leadership positioning by U.S. firms in China using the awareness, motivation, capability (AMC) perspective. We define leadership as first in industry to invest in China, and find that leaders have characteristics associated with higher AMC, evidenced by pre-existing multinational experience, higher product market orientation, smaller scale of operations, and higher input cost structure. Notably, the motivation to lower input costs and the prior capability in multinational operations mattered only for the first wave of firms leading industry investment earlier in time, while firms with smaller scale of operations exhibited a preference to lead investment in less popular …

Optimal Design Of Compact And Functionally Contiguous Conservation Management Areas, Hayri Önal, Yicheng Wang, Sahan T.M. Dissanayake, James D. Westervelt
Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Compactness and landscape connectivity are essential properties for effective functioning of conservation reserves. In this article we introduce a linear integer programming model to determine optimal configuration of a conservation reserve with such properties. Connectivity can be defined either as structural (physical) connectivity or functional connectivity; the model developed here addresses both properties. We apply the model to identify the optimal conservation management areas for protection of Gopher Tortoise (GT) in a military installation, Ft. Benning, Georgia, which serves as a safe refuge for this ‘at risk’ species. The recent expansion in the military mission of the installation increases the …

Collective Bargaining And School District Test Scores: Evidence From Ohio Bargaining Agreements, Joshua C. Hall, Donald Lacombe, Joylynn Michelle Pruitt
Collective Bargaining And School District Test Scores: Evidence From Ohio Bargaining Agreements, Joshua C. Hall, Donald Lacombe, Joylynn Michelle Pruitt
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
We revisit the relationship between collective bargaining by teachers unions and school performance. The empirical literature in this area has found mixed results at both the state and district levels. We contribute to this literature in two ways. First, rather than simply dummy union status, we proxy for the restrictiveness of collective bargaining agreements with the number of pages per agreement. Second, we employ Bayesian spatial methods to deal with spatial dependence in school district activities. Our reduced-form results indicate that collective bargaining directly lowers scores on high school math scores, but that the total effect is zero.

Farmed And Wild-Caught Shrimp In Kentucky And South Carolina: Consumer Preference For Homegrown By Heroes, Community Supported Fishery, And Other Quality Attributes, Graham T. Soley
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
As information regarding origin, production method, and environmental certifications characterize a progressing seafood market, scare analysis has been made to understand market responses. This study focuses on consumer preference for wild-caught and farm-raised shrimp with several attributes. These include the Homegrown By Heroes label and Best Aquaculture Practices certification, as well as other existing attributes including the Marine Stewardship Council and each state’s local label. Also considered are hypothetical labels including Community Supported Fishery (CSF) and National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This study surveys consumers in Kentucky and South Carolina while utilizing a choice experiment to elicit willingness-to-pay measures …

Income And Physical Activity Choices: A Comparison Between United States And China, Xiaowen Hu
Income And Physical Activity Choices: A Comparison Between United States And China, Xiaowen Hu
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
The low income population often appears to make poor health choices, including physical activity deficiency. Since outdoor physical activity does not have to be monetarily costly, one explanation for this phenomenon is related to the idea of time preference. Briefly, the benefit of future good health appears to be valued less by those with low income, and they face a choice between consumption today and better health in the future. The objective of this study is to further investigate the determinants of participation in physical activity with an emphasis on the effect of annual household income. This dissertation consists of …

Reunification Of Koreas: A Hidden Treasure Box For The Global Economy, Hye Tae Kim
A with Honors Projects
In this student work, the author discusses the reunification of North and South Korea. The Republic of Korea’s president Park Geun Hye said “Reunification is the jackpot!” (qtd. in Park, my trans. par. 2). Recently, the global economy and individual countries’ economies are settling, without any major changes in the economies. Also, economic levels of countries are calculated and graded, and there have not been drastic changes for years. However, there are sometimes unexpected events which affect every economy and individual a lot, and the reunification of South Korea and North Korea is one of them. The reunification will recover …
Pricing Discrepancies In The Washington State Cherry Market, Foster L. Peebles
Pricing Discrepancies In The Washington State Cherry Market, Foster L. Peebles
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This research is focused on finding a pricing model for Washington State cherries. Each year a significant number of cherries are not sold, or are sold at a price close to or under cost, due to issues with program cherry purchases and pricing models. This research looks at two specific markets: the program fruit business and the wholesale markets. The program fruit business is comprised of companies such as Kroger, Wal-Mart, Costco, and others that “pre-purchase” their fruit at a specific price for delivery at a later date, much like a futures market for other commodities. The wholesale market, also …

Informational Efficiency And The Reaction To Terrorism: A Financial Perspective, Nicholas Roland
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The purpose of this study is to measure the message terror organizations hope to convey using the financial markets as a proxy of measurement to determine patterns within the marketplace and the effects on the terrorists’ ability to deliver a desired message due to the increased use of digital devices and access to instantaneous news, seen over the past decade. Using death count, geographic location, and event type, this study identified 109 attacks between 1985 and 2015 to be analyzed against 5 market indices and 5 securities. Measuring the effects within a 10-day sample window from the time of the …
