The objective of this study is to understand the meat demand pattern of household in Indonesia. This study used the 2013 National Socio-Economic Survey (SUSENAS) and Agricultural Census (SP). The method used to understand the meat demand pattern is Quadratic Almost Ideal Demand System (QUAIDS) approach with Iterated Linear Least Square (ILLS) estimator. The result shows that urban, education, household size, and domestic meat supply have an influence on meat demand pattern and its elasticity.

Is There A Future For The Euro?, Augustine H. H. Tan
Research Collection School Of Economics
A Greek exit could spell the euro zone's disintegration. The Greek referendum last Sunday resoundingly backed its embattled government over its tortuous negotiations with the Troika of the European Central Bank (ECB), the European Union (EU) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Greece is now back at the negotiating table, which may ease the terms of loan repayment and lighten the reforms demanded or it may lead to a Grexit.

The Nexus Of Financial Deepening, Economic Growth, And Poverty: The Case Of Pakistan, Abdur Rehman Aleemi, Muhammad Azam
The Nexus Of Financial Deepening, Economic Growth, And Poverty: The Case Of Pakistan, Abdur Rehman Aleemi, Muhammad Azam
Business Review
This study investigates the nexus of financial development, economic growth, and poverty for Pakistan over a prolonged period of time, 1960- 2012. Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL)-Bounds testing approach to co integration and Unrestricted Error Correction Model (UECM)along with VECM Granger causality have been applied to examine the long-run dynamic relationship among financial development, economic development and poverty. For that purpose, we have developed two models and adopted a new and relatively strong proxy for financial development. The results suggest that financial development negatively affects both long-run and short-run economic growth. However, financial development is found to be positively affecting per …
Global Dominance Potential Of Chinese Corporations, Javed A. Ansari
Global Dominance Potential Of Chinese Corporations, Javed A. Ansari
Business Review
Thispaper assesses the corporate strength of Chinese firms in the global market and addresses the question: does China's growing corporate strength indicate a rise in its global influence, or, in other words, what are the prospects for the emergence of capitalism with Chinese characteristics as the new dominant paradigm. It finds that Chinese corporations have significantly improved their global profit share in several sectors during 2007-2013. Many of these corporations are Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs) that play a dominant role. Summarizing a recent case study of Chinese SOE strategy in the Zambian copper belt it provides evidence for close interaction …

Does Esg Investment Enhance Investment Returns, Ca. Hemlata Chelawat, I.V. Trivedi
Business Review
Over the past decade, Environmental, Social and Governance Investment or ESG Investment has become a mainstream investment approach in the investment community around the world, especially in the US and Europe. There is increasing evidence from academic and practitioner research around the world that better ESG performance by companies leads to reduction in risks, improvement in financial performance, higher stock market valuations and hence, enhanced returns for investors investing in stocks of such companies. Hence, incorporating ESG factors can lead to better informed and improved investment decisions. This has led to development of ESG indices and fonds, to enable investors …
Us Policy Of Technology Transfer To China, Amna Mehmood, Sadaf Farooq
Us Policy Of Technology Transfer To China, Amna Mehmood, Sadaf Farooq
Business Review
Hans Morgenthau defined international politics as the struggle for power among nations. Initially power was understood in terms of security and military supremacy only. But time has proved that military power is only effective when it is supported by a strong economy. Especially in post-Cold War era when the world is transforming from uni-polar to multi-polar world on the basis of competing economic centres, political economy has attained equal importance at par with the international security studies, if not more. One of the most important and sensitive area of international political economy is technology transfer, a life bloodfor modernization of …
A Curious Study Of China, Sana Khalil
A Curious Study Of China, Sana Khalil
Business Review
China seems well-positioned in terms of innovation output; nonetheless, have underperformed with regards to innovation input which presents a very curious case for study. I investigate the determinants of China's cross-regional innovation output and link the variations in innovation output with the level of economic development. Using panel dataset from 31 regions of China, I show that the differences in China's regional innovation output can significantly be explained by variations in R&D manpower and expenditure, share of highly educated students, and public education spending. Additionally, domestic patent stock, high-tech export share and output value of new products are positively and …
Three Essays On Dividend Policy, Mehmet Deren Caliskan
Three Essays On Dividend Policy, Mehmet Deren Caliskan
Finance Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation considers paying earnings out as dividends a conservative policy as opposed to investing earnings in to value-increasing projects. Based on this view, this dissertation explores the effect of chief executive officers’ (CEO) risk preferences on dividend policy, market’s reaction to dividend policy changes, and the effect of dividend policy on firm financial distress. The first chapter hypothesizes that risk seeking CEOs will be less likely to pay dividends compared to conservative CEOs. The second chapter hypothesizes that when the market sentiment is high (i.e., when investors are willing to take risk) firms that omit dividends should outperform the …

Predictability Of Exchange Rates With Taylor Rule Fundamentals: Evidence From Inflation-Targeting Emerging Countries, Joseph D. Alba, Donghyun Park, Taojun Xie
Research Collection School Of Economics
We investigate the out-of-sample predictability of U.S. dollar exchange rates with Taylor rule fundamentals in thirteen emerging countries with inflation-targeting monetary policy regimes. We find some evidence of out-of-sample exchange rate predictability for Brazil, Czech Republic, Hungary, Philippines, Thailand, and South Africa. Plots of the coefficients of U.S. inflation and Philippine inflation predict the direction of the U.S. dollar-Philippine peso exchange rates to be opposite to that predicted by the Taylor principle.
Small Business Borrowing And Peer-To-Peer Lending: Evidence From Lending Club, Adam Nowak, Amanda Ross, Christopher Yencha
Small Business Borrowing And Peer-To-Peer Lending: Evidence From Lending Club, Adam Nowak, Amanda Ross, Christopher Yencha
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
This study is interested in the ability of borrowers and lenders to signal to each other in the peer-to-peer lending market. We focus on small business loans and investigate the relationship between the loan description that a borrower provides and the impact of this description on the potential funding of the loan by investors. We find that the loan descriptions in the data can be used to predict the probability that the entire loan will be funded. In addition, we also find that an index created from a textual analysis of the loan description can be used to forecast the …

Business Faculty Articles and Research
In this statement the European Shadow Financial Regulatory Committee (ESFRC) is advocating a conditional relief of Greek's government debt based on Greece meeting certain targets for structural economic reforms in areas such as its labor market and pensions sector. The authors argue that the position of the European institutions that debt relief for Greece cannot be part of an agreement is based on the illusion that Greece will be able to service its sovereign debt and reduce its debt overhang after implementing a set of fiscal and structural reforms. However, the Greek economy would need to grow at an unrealistic …

Does happiness depend on income? What puts people at risk to become “heavy smokers?” Do gender and wage affect job promotion? The answers to these varied questions have one thing in common: they employ grouped or categorical data. Happiness is often reported on cales of 1 to 10 (Winkelmann 2005). Tobacco users and cigarette smokers are asked if they are “non-users,” “light users,” or “heavy users” (Harris and Zhao 2007). In some professions, such as the British nursing field, careers are assigned ranks from one to six Pudney and Shields 2000). Categsorization often cannot be avoided when collecting data. The …

America’S Prodigal Devotion To Light Rail: Did Denver’S Light Rail System Help With Traffic Decongestion?, Thomas Kelemen, Dr. Michael Ransom
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Over the past twenty years, the Denver Regional Transit District has developed an extensive light rail public transit system in the Denver, Colorado metro area. This development was motivated, at least in part, by severe highway congestion on important highway routes to downtown Denver. In a recent analysis, Bhattacharjee and Goetz (2012) suggest that the presence of the light rail system has reduced the growth of highway traffic on major highways near the light rail network by ten percent, relative to routes in areas not served by light rail. We show that such an effect is implausibly large. We provide …
Skill, Complexity, And Strategic Interaction, Val Lambson, John Van Den Berghe
Skill, Complexity, And Strategic Interaction, Val Lambson, John Van Den Berghe
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Abstract: We present a win-loss game between players with explicitly-modeled cognitive limitations. Differences in the players’ abilities to analyze the available actions and deduce the optimal choices induce preferences over the complexity of the environment and hence incentives to manipulate that complexity. More skilled players are always at an advantage. In a class of long-horizon games with constant complexity, greater complexity favors the less- skilled player when the more-skilled player is the last mover. When the less-skilled player moves last there are countervailing effects. Finally, when complexity can be manipulated over the course of the game, the benefits of strategic …
Leadership And Motivation For Public Goods Contributions, Bryan C. Mccannon
Leadership And Motivation For Public Goods Contributions, Bryan C. Mccannon
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Results from a leader-follower public goods game are presented. An individual, when randomly-selected to make a contribution knowing that others will observe the selection, gives more than one does in the simultaneous-move public goods game. Followers adopt a quasi-matching strategy where they systematically donate less than the leader, but contribute more when the leader does and contribute less when the leader free rides. The net result is increased provision of a public good when contributions are sequential. The results highlight that psychological preferences, rather than solely social preferences, can explain behavior.

Liquidity, Market Depth, And Informed Trading, Roy Roth, Dr. Scott Condie
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Hidden limit orders have been increasingly important in asset markets over the past several years. These orders are hidden in the sense that they are not displayed or announced in any way until another order is sent to the market that trades with the hidden order. Traditionally, the two major order types in asset markets are market orders and limit orders. A market order contains instructions to buy or sell a given number of shares of a specific asset immediately at the best possible price, while a limit order signals a trader’s willingness to buy (sell) a certain number of …
Health Insurance Market Inefficiencies For The Children Of Teen Mothers, Joshua Witter, Joseph Price
Health Insurance Market Inefficiencies For The Children Of Teen Mothers, Joshua Witter, Joseph Price
Journal of Undergraduate Research
I was awarded an ORCA grant to research the unique health insurance market that the children of teen mothers face. I became concerned that these children may not have equal access to private insurance coverage and as a result were at risk of being uninsured or over-enrolling in public insurance programs such as Medicaid. The majority of these children are living in three-generation households where their grandparents are the primary financial provider for the household members. In many instances, but not all, insurance companies will not permit dependent grandchildren to be added to the grandparent’s health insurance plan, especially if …
Ethno-Racial Disparities In Health Outcomes: Evidence From The Aging Population, Olufolake Odufuwa
Ethno-Racial Disparities In Health Outcomes: Evidence From The Aging Population, Olufolake Odufuwa
Economics ETDs
This dissertation assesses racial and ethnic disparities in health outcomes of the aging population, with focus on improving functional health, health status and quality of life at both individual and community levels. Chapter 2 examines racial and ethnic disparities in willingness to pay (WTP) for improved health among an aging population sample while also examining the impact of health status and risky health behaviors. Results indicate that racial and ethnic minorities are more likely to have a positive WTP for improved health than non-Hispanic Whites. However, WTP for minorities is found to be significantly lower than for non-Hispanic Whites. However, …

Budgets And The Real Economy, Ishrat Husain Dr.
Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles
The annual budgets of the federal and provincial governments should make a significant impact on the real economy, financial variables, social sectors, poverty and income distribution and finally make up the infrastructure deficit. The real economy is affected in terms of output level, employment, growth rate, investment and savings. The financial variables affected are fiscal balances, current account, debt-to-GDP ratio and taxto-GDP ratios, etc. Social sectors such as education, health, water supply, social safety nets are directly impacted while poverty and income distribution are indirectly impacted. Infrastructure deficit can be made up by complementary private investment.

Inference Under Stability Of Risk Preferences, Levon Barseghyan, Francesca Molinari, Joshua C. Teitelbaum
Inference Under Stability Of Risk Preferences, Levon Barseghyan, Francesca Molinari, Joshua C. Teitelbaum
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
We leverage the assumption that preferences are stable across contexts to partially identify and conduct inference on the parameters of a structural model of risky choice. Working with data on households' deductible choices across three lines of insurance coverage and a model that nests expected utility theory plus a range of non-expected utility models, we perform a revealed preference analysis that yields household-specific bounds on the model parameters. We then impose stability and other structural assumptions to tighten the bounds, and we explore what we can learn about households' risk preferences from the intervals defined by the bounds. We further …
