Trade Liberalization And Trade Performance Of Environmental Goods: Evidence From Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Members, Qi He, Hong Fang, Miao Wang, Bo Peng

In this article, we study the impact of trade liberalization, including reductions in both tariff and nontariff trade barriers, on environmental goods (EGs) exports. Using bilateral trade data from 20 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation members, we find that tariff reduction in an exporting country has a larger positive impact on its exports of EGs than tariff reduction in an importing country. Our results also show that a lower nontariff barrier in an importing country increases its imports of EGs. A considerable amount of heterogeneity also exists in subsample results based on countries’ income levels.

This paper addresses the process aspect of capability development in connection with the debate in the capability approach over the relationship between individual and collective capabilities by combining Sen’s ‘privateness’ interpretation of different aspects of the self and Granovetter’s social embeddedness framework. It interprets Sen’s commitment aspect of the self in collective intentionality terms, uses this to explain his view of ‘identification with’ social groups, and then uses social identity theory’s distinction between relational and categorical social group identities to explain a general relationship between individual and collective capabilities. This study examines the impact of shocks to exchange rate and output uncertainty (volatility) on real private fixed investment (FI) in Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. The analysis is conducted using vector autoregressive models that contain the price level, real output, the volatility of real output, the real exchange rate, the volatility of the real exchange rate, an interest rate and FI. The results yield important public policy implications with regard to the impact of output volatility of FI. Thorstein Veblen highlighted a number of human instincts, one of which was the “parental bent.” In contrast to the other “positive” instincts, the parental bent is specifically other-regarding in that Veblen described it in terms of utilizing knowledge for the betterment of society. Veblen’s “parental bent” stresses the social embeddedness of humanity and the human instinct to care. Our ability to care is partially predicated on our social roles and the values embedded within those roles. Critically, this is influenced by the configuration of institutions within a society. Some have suggested that rapid global industrial growth over the past decade is the key driver of price growth. Across the country in big cities, suburbs and rural areas, Blacks and Hispanics earn less in comparison to Whites. The prevalence of the wage gap for racial and ethnic minorities is widely known though the composition of that gap has been up for debate. Using empirical analysis, this paper first investigates the relationship between race and wages then, using Oaxaca Decomposition, decomposes the wage gap for these groups. This paper extends the current literature on county-level income distribution in the United States by explicitly exploring the effect of business-attraction efforts by state governments. Using county-level job attraction and retention data from 2000 to 2005 in Virginia to explain the income distribution from 2006 to 2010, while controlling for demographic and socioeconomic conditions of local communities, this study shows that bringing in manufacturing jobs can reduce income inequality at the local level while attracting jobs in professional and business services tends to increase local income inequality. In its most basic form, end-of-life care can be divided into two distinct pathways: aggressive treatment and methods, or palliative treatment and care. In their introductory chapter, De Schutter and Pistor argue that in light of increasing absolute and relative scarcity of land and fresh water there is urgent need to improve the governance of these and other essential resources. Emphasizing “essentiality” shifts the debate from allocative efficiency to normative concerns of equity and dignity. Essential resources are indispensable for survival and/or for meaningful participation in a given community. Their allocation therefore cannot be left to the pricing mechanism alone. The role of investor countries in large-scale land acquisitions is poorly understood in the contemporary “land grab” literature. Orthodox explanations largely build on deductive analyses that deviate from the emerging empirical evidence, and/or face analytical difficulties when trying to capture why large-scale land acquisitions happen. This thesis investigates the global phenomenon of “land grabbing” from the comparative perspective of two major investor countries: the UK and China. Understanding a country's human capital externalities is an important part of understanding economic phenomena and implementing national economic policy. However, externalities are difficult to estimate. Measurement error can cause a misinterpretation of economic models and result in misguided policies. The two methods of calculating human capital externalities are the Mincer Equation and Constant-Composition approach. The author estimates human capital externalities in Mexico with the Constant-Composition approach because the Mincer approach often finds externalities where none are present. Using the Constant-Composition method, the author finds no indication of human capital externalities in Mexico.

The traditional methods for small area estimation borrow strength through linear models that provide links to related areas, which may not be appropriate for some survey data. As the discussion concerning economic growth has become increasingly important, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and its determinants have become a hot topic. This thesis uses 2SLS to investigate the relationship between Media Freedom, Socio-political Stability, and FDI levels, using Corruption as a robustness check. It finds that there is a positive correlation for FDI levels for both Media Freedom and Corruption, providing a theoretical framework within which they operate.

This paper examines the economic growth effects of hosting the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games within the municipality of Beijing and throughout China. To test for the significance of such growth effects, a two-stage least squares regression model with instrumental variables in employed. The regression results provide no evidence that hosting the Olympic Games had a positive impact on economic growth in China or within Beijing, but they do offer evidence that the games resulted in a short-term boost in gross regional product levels throughout the country. In this paper we argue that the ability of people to freely trade, enter into contracts, and start businesses in a system of private property and the rule of law is crucial for productive entrepreneurship. One measure of how freely individuals can engage in economic activity is the Economic Freedom of the World (EFW) index. After examining the economic policies that harm economic freedom and possibly entrepreneurship, we highlight the correspondence between economic freedom and a number of measures of entrepreneurship. We conclude with some thoughts regarding future research involving economic freedom and entrepreneurship.

This chapter synthesizes and elaborates on much of the existing research using the Economic Freedom of North America (EFNA) index. Our consensus after reading this literature is that the EFNA index, similarly to the Economic Freedom of the World (EFW) index, is largely positively related with “good” outcomes, and negatively related with “bad” ones, although there are a few exceptions. The literature using the EFNA is growing rapidly and can provide a useful guide towards future policy changes and economic outcomes.

Given the push toward renewable and alternative energy, a new energy mix is emerging. Wind is the fastest growing source of renewable electricity in the United States. The siting of wind turbines has proven controversial with multiple operations facing local resistance. Opponents cite issues such as noise, bird deaths, and aesthetics. Given that farmer portfolios are heavily comprised of land assets, the possibility that surrounding wind energy operations may reduce agricultural land value is of concern. We find that congressional influences affect the amount of airport subsidies that a congressional district receives from the Essential Air Service (EAS) program. The EAS program was passed with the goal of helping to continue commercial air service to rural communities following the deregulation of the airline industry. Using subsidy data from 1998-2014, we find strong evidence that subsidies are higher in districts having congressional representation on the House Transportation Committee. Representation on the House Appropriations Committee is also associated with higher subsidies. In this study, we investigate whether nonpublic school enrollment affects the performance of public school districts. If homeschooling and private schools act as competition, public school districts test scores should be positively associated with nonpublic enrollment. Using data on West Virginia county school districts, and controlling for endogeneity with an instrumental variables approach, we find that a one standard deviation increase in relative nonpublic enrollment in a county is associated with statistically significant increases in public school district test scores. An Investigation Of Confucius Institute’S Effects On China’S Ofdi Via Cultural Difference And Institutional Quality, Chensheng Xu, Feng Yao, Fan Zhang

This paper uses a panel data of China's outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) from 2004-2012 to investigate the influence of Confucius Institute on China's OFDI. We find that Confucius Institute, as a comprehensive platform for China's foreign cultural exchange, has a significant positive effect on China’s OFDI. Interestingly, the positive effect can be reduced with larger cultural difference and can be increased in host countries with lower institutional quality. Correspondingly, we find that Confucius Institute’s impact on China’s OFDI is more obvious in host countries with smaller cultural difference or lower institutional quality.

Adam Smith famously argued that increased competition in religion would result in more religious tolerance and that the benefits of competition in the marketplace would also be seen in religious instruction when many religious sects are tolerated. We use a cross-section of a maximum of 167 countries to explore whether increased religious competition results in less governmental regulation of religion and less governmental favoritism of religion. Our measure of religious regulation and favoritism comes from the Association of Religion Data Archives.
