What Is The 'Economic Value' Of Learning English In Spain?, Molly M. Robbins
What Is The 'Economic Value' Of Learning English In Spain?, Molly M. Robbins
Scripps Senior Theses
This paper uses historical and economic references to evaluate the economic value of learning English in Spain. Seeing that English is the lingua franca in politics, business, and technology, it is a necessary skill for Spanish citizens to possess in order to efficiently interact in foreign relations of all kinds. Due to Franco’s harsh language policies, and Spain’s ineffective education system, Spain has lacked the same linguistic exposure to foreign languages—especially English—than the rest of Europe. By referencing the previous literature written about the relationship between language and earnings, this paper seeks to find the economic incentive for Spaniards to …

Toward Consistent Cross-Hauling Estimation For Input-Output Regionalization, Christa D. Court, Randall Jackson
Toward Consistent Cross-Hauling Estimation For Input-Output Regionalization, Christa D. Court, Randall Jackson
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
Although the literature has provided steps in the right direction, conceptual shortcomings still exist in the cross-hauling adjustment methods that are currently being applied in the literature. This paper represents an attempt to 1) characterize the cross-hauling adjustment methods that exist in the literature; 2) identify the shortcomings that exist with the most widely applied method, CHARM; 3) provide an empirical analysis to tackle the notion of just how ubiquitous crosshauling is and the potential impact it has on input-output multiplier estimates; and 4) suggest directions for future conceptual and theoretical development that will lead to consistent cross-hauling measures for …
Why Healthy Behavior Is The Hard Choice, Lawrence O. Gostin
Why Healthy Behavior Is The Hard Choice, Lawrence O. Gostin
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Our society is structured to encourage unhealthy diets and physically inactive lifestyles, which are key risk factors for chronic diseases including diabetes, heart diseases, and cancers. We are bombarded with advertisements for hyperprocessed foods laden with saturated fat, salt, sugar, and refined carbohydrates, “low-fat” foods often contain high amounts of sugar and salt, and parks and recreation spaces are often inaccessible or unsafe.
Four simple ideas - taxes on unhealthy products, product reformulation, improving the informational environment, and increasing healthy food accessibility - could make healthy behaviors the “default” choice for most consumers. First, taxes on unhealthy products, such as …

Pendidikan, Human Capital Ataukah Signaling? Studi Kasus Indonesia, Mohamad Fahmi, Yeni Oktavia Mulyono
Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia
This study aims to test whether the behavior of Indonesian people in determining education is the manifestation of human capital theory or signaling theory. Using the ordinary least square (OLS) model and the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) 2007 data, we find that both theories mutually have effect to influence the behavior of Indonesian people to determine their education.

Analisis Spasial Kriminalitas Harta Benda Di Wilayah Jadetabek, Aditya Harin Nugroho, Sonny Harry B. Harmadi
Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia
This study aims to identify the existence of spatial dependence of property crime at sub-district level in the case of Jakarta, Tangerang, Depok, and Bekasi (Jadetabek), the major metropolitan area in Indonesia over 2010 period. Empirical results by using spatial autoregressive suggest the existence of positive spatial autocorrelation of property crime in Jadetabek. We also find the determinants of property crime is related to per capita household expenditure, number of youth unemployment, number of young population, number of drags abuse case, and percentage of case solved.
Estimation And Identification Of Change Points In Panel Models With Nonstationary Or Stationary Regressors And Error Term, Badi H. Baltagi, Chihwa Kao, Long Liu
Estimation And Identification Of Change Points In Panel Models With Nonstationary Or Stationary Regressors And Error Term, Badi H. Baltagi, Chihwa Kao, Long Liu
Center for Policy Research
This paper studies the estimation of change point in panel models. We extend Bai (2010) and Feng, Kao and Lazarová (2009) to the case of stationary or nonstationary regressors and error term, and whether the change point is present or not. We prove consistency and derive the asymptotic distributions of the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and First Difference (FD) estimators. We find that the FD estimator is robust for all cases considered.

Employment, Unemployment, And Underemployment In Africa, Stephen S. Golub, Faraz Hayat , '14
Employment, Unemployment, And Underemployment In Africa, Stephen S. Golub, Faraz Hayat , '14
Economics Faculty Works
This chapter documents and analyzes the predominance of informal employment in Africa and shows that lack of demand for labor rather than worker characteristics is the main reason for pervasive underemployment. Integration into the global economy and exports of labor-intensive products are vital to boosting the demand for labor in Africa. Africa has some potential to become competitive in light manufacturing, but the most promising avenue for export-led growth of employment in many African countries is agriculture, including traditional cash crops such as cotton, coffee, cocoa, and groundnuts. Traditional cash crops, which are the source of livelihood for millions of …
The Effects Of Foreign Language Acquisition On Wages For Us College Graduates, Christopher Nguyen
The Effects Of Foreign Language Acquisition On Wages For Us College Graduates, Christopher Nguyen
Honors Papers
This paper seeks to determine whether fluency in a foreign language has a significant impact on future earnings. The sample in question is made up of US college graduates who attained their bachelor’s degrees during the 2007-2008 school year. While previous literature suggests that there is a positive impact of 2-3% higher wages on top of a bachelor’s degree for those who are fluent in a foreign language, I am unable to find this general premium for fluency in a foreign language. I look at interactions of foreign language and their relative difficulty and, once again, do not find a …
The Impact Of The State Children's Health Insurance Program On Educational Outcomes In The United States: A Two-Fold Analysis, Olivia Simuoli
The Impact Of The State Children's Health Insurance Program On Educational Outcomes In The United States: A Two-Fold Analysis, Olivia Simuoli
Honors Papers
This paper examines the impact of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) on the educational outcomes of American children as measured by fourth and eighth-grade math and reading standardized test scores from the time of the program’s inception up to the year 2013. More specifically, I focus on the effects of the increases in eligibility for children’s public health insurance coverage brought about by SCHIP on average test scores across the nation at both the state level for all 51 states and the county level for Florida’s 67 counties. On the state level, I am ultimately unable to find …
Effect Of Water Levels And Beach Availability On Waterfront Homes, Benjamin Towson Whitener
Effect Of Water Levels And Beach Availability On Waterfront Homes, Benjamin Towson Whitener
Honors Papers
Previous hedonic pricing models have studied in depth the aesthetic value of views, as well as the recreational value of proximity to waterfronts. This study examines the same proximity and aesthetic effects in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and builds in the effect of changing water levels and beach availability on those implicit values. Results indicate that aesthetic effects of living adjacent to the waterfront, as well as proximity, are insignificant. Water levels are negatively correlated with home prices, but this effect is not magnified or dimmed for waterfront homes. Beach availability has an ambiguous effect on home prices; statistical significance was found …

Price, Perceived Value And Customer Satisfaction: A Text-Based Econometric Analysis Of Yelp! Reviews, Eleanor A. Dwyer
Scripps Senior Theses
We examine the antecedents of customer satisfaction in the restaurant sector, paying particular attention to perceived value and price level. Using Latent Dirichlet Allocation, we extract latent topics from the text of Yelp! reviews, then analyze the relationship between these topics and satisfaction, measured as the difference between review rating and user average review rating.

Costly Distribution And The Non-Equivalence Of Tariffs And Quotas, James Lake, Maia K. Linask
Costly Distribution And The Non-Equivalence Of Tariffs And Quotas, James Lake, Maia K. Linask
Economics Faculty Publications
When governments impose a quota or tariff on imports, it is well known that the resulting rents and revenues trigger costly rent-seeking and revenue-seeking activities, which are welfare-reducing and may be economically more significant than the efficiency losses resulting from the protectionist-induced resource misallocation. Repeated interaction among firms can eliminate wasteful rent- and revenue-seeking expenditures through cooperation. We show that while aggregate outcomes are equivalent under tariffs and quotas if cooperation arises, the conditions under which cooperation arises differ by policy. This difference arises because a firm must incur additional cost to physically import and distribute the goods associated with …
Quotas On Boards And The Gender Gap, Kevin F. Hallock
Quotas On Boards And The Gender Gap, Kevin F. Hallock
Economics Faculty Publications
Back in the late 1990s, Marianne Bertrand and the author examined the pay gap between male and female executives listed in the proxy statements of publicly traded US firms from 1992 in 1997, which they later published in the October 2011 edition of Industrial and Labor Relations Review. They found that, taken as a whole, women in these top five positions earned about 45% less than men in these positions. At the same time, they found that as much as 75% of this gap could be explained by the fact that women managed smaller companies, and were less likely to …

The Impact Of Hiv/Aids On Foreign Direct Investment: Evidence From Sub-Saharan Africa, Elizabeth Asiedu, Yi Jin, Isaac K. Kanyama
The Impact Of Hiv/Aids On Foreign Direct Investment: Evidence From Sub-Saharan Africa, Elizabeth Asiedu, Yi Jin, Isaac K. Kanyama
Journal of African Trade
We construct a theoretical model that examines the relationship between HIV/AIDS and foreign direct investment and employ panel data from 41 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) to test the implications of the model. We find that HIV/AIDS has a negative but diminishing effect on FDI. Furthermore, the adverse effect occurs even when the HIV prevalence rate is as low as 0.1%. The result has important policy implications for SSA countries.
The Potential For Internal Trade And Regional Integration In Africa, Alemayehu Geda, Edris Hussein Seid
The Potential For Internal Trade And Regional Integration In Africa, Alemayehu Geda, Edris Hussein Seid
Journal of African Trade
This study examines the potential for intra-Africa trade and the prospects of advancing regional economic integration through such trade. A variety of empirical models are deployed for the purpose. The analysis and model simulation results reveal the existence of significant potential for intra-Africa trade. However, realizing this potential and hence the effort to advance regional integration through intra-Africa trade is challenged by lack of complementarities of exports and imports as well as the relative competitive position of African potential export suppliers. This is the result of weak infrastructure, productivity and trade facilitation — in short, acute export supply constraint that …
Who Profits From Trade Facilitation Initiatives? Implications For African Countries☆, Bernard Hoekman, Ben Shepherd
Who Profits From Trade Facilitation Initiatives? Implications For African Countries☆, Bernard Hoekman, Ben Shepherd
Journal of African Trade
Extensive research has demonstrated the existence of large potential welfare gains from measures to facilitate trade — reduce trade costs — for African countries in particular. However, concerns have been expressed by policymakers regarding the distribution of the benefits and costs of trade facilitation. We use firm-level data for a large number of developing countries, in Africa and the rest of the world, to assess the claims that it will be mostly large firms that benefit from trade facilitation and that trade facilitation may result in a deterioration of the trade balance. We find no evidence for either argument. Our …
Sovereign Bond Issues: Do African Countries Pay More To Borrow?☆, Michael Olabisi, Howard Stein
Sovereign Bond Issues: Do African Countries Pay More To Borrow?☆, Michael Olabisi, Howard Stein
Journal of African Trade
There is a new wave of external borrowing by African governments on private sovereign bond markets. The findings in this paper indicate that African economies pay higher-than-normal coupon rates on these markets; observed risk measures like agency ratings and debt to GDP ratios do not explain the deviation from the norm. We also find that countries in better financial standing tend to self-select into the private markets, such that their risk profiles cannot explain the high coupon rates. Further research steps and policy implications are discussed.
Differential Effects Of Trade On Economic Growth And Investment: A Cross-Country Empirical Investigation☆, Maureen Were
Differential Effects Of Trade On Economic Growth And Investment: A Cross-Country Empirical Investigation☆, Maureen Were
Journal of African Trade
The paper empirically examines the differential effects of trade on economic growth and investment based on cross-country data. In general, the results are largely consistent with the positive impact of trade on economic growth as found in the literature. However, the empirical results based on different categories of countries show that whereas trade has positively impacted economic growth in developed and developing countries, its effect is insignificant for least developed countries (LDCs), which largely include African countries. Nonetheless, additional results suggest that trade is a key determinant of foreign direct investment (FDI) across all country groups including LDCs, as well …
Wage Distribution Impacts Of Higher Education Faculty Unionization, Charles S. Wassell Jr., David W. Hedrick, Steven E. Henson, John M. Krieg
Wage Distribution Impacts Of Higher Education Faculty Unionization, Charles S. Wassell Jr., David W. Hedrick, Steven E. Henson, John M. Krieg
Economics Faculty Scholarship
The literature on the effects of unions on the distribution of wages at the macroeconomic and inter-industry levels has given little attention to the effects at the firm level. At the same time, research on collective bargaining impacts in higher education has focused on the overall wage level rather than on the distribution of salaries. Using panel data on individual faculty members, we find faculty unionization to be associated with a significant flattening of the wage distribution across academic disciplines. This has implications for why faculty might choose to unionize, even in the absence of an overall wage premium.
The Taylor Rule With Real-Time Data And An Analysis Of Its Impact On Historical Policy Analysis, Morgan Mckee
The Taylor Rule With Real-Time Data And An Analysis Of Its Impact On Historical Policy Analysis, Morgan Mckee
Honors Theses
The Federal Reserve system (the Fed) is the United States monetary policy authority and is mandated by Congress to pursue two goals: 1) maximum sustainable output and employment and 2) stable prices. Among the actions the Fed can take to achieve these goals is the ability to set the target federal funds rate. Simple policy rules that set the level of funds rate in response to changes in economic variables have gained attention as a means to more effective monetary policy. One of the most researched and cited rules is that proposed by economist John Taylor in 1993. Taylor’s rule …
Heteroskedasticity Of Unknown Form In Spatial Autoregressive Models With A Moving Average Disturbance Term, Osman Dogan
Heteroskedasticity Of Unknown Form In Spatial Autoregressive Models With A Moving Average Disturbance Term, Osman Dogan
Publications and Research
In this study, I investigate the necessary condition for the consistency of the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) of spatial models with a spatial moving average process in the disturbance term. I show that the MLE of spatial autoregressive and spatial moving average parameters is generally inconsistent when heteroskedasticity is not considered in the estimation. I also show that the MLE of parameters of exogenous variables is inconsistent and determine its asymptotic bias. I provide simulation results to evaluate the performance of the MLE. The simulation results indicate that the MLE imposes a substantial amount of bias on both autoregressive and …
