إشكالية العلاقة بين التنمية الاقتصادية وعدم الاستقرار السياسي في البلاد النامية (العراق أنموذجا), رشيد باني الظالمي, غسان طارق ظاهر

Muthanna Journal of Administrative and Economics Sciences

The Impact Of Education Cascading Through The Economy, Center For Business And Economic Research, Gatton College Of Business And Economics, University Of Kentucky

CBER Infographic Posters

Research confirms what common sense suggests, higher levels of education are associated with better economic outcomes like higher wages and lower unemployment. And by improving health, increasing technology use, expanding volunteerism, and reducing public assistance, higher education levels have long-lasting effects on the economy. Eighty years ago, Kentucky's per capita personal income was just over 50% of the U.S. average; today it is just over 80%. Kentucky's educational position has improved significantly over the last twenty-five years, but the state still lags the U.S. in college attainment (23% compared to 30%) and academic achievement gaps continue to mute overall educational …

Fellows Address: Are Industry Clusters And Diversity Strange Bedfellows?, Randall Jackson Jan 2015

Fellows Address: Are Industry Clusters And Diversity Strange Bedfellows?, Randall Jackson

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

In this address, I review industry clustering and diversification strategies to compare and contrast their underlying foundations. The lack of consensus choice of one or the other for regional economic development strategies along with the recognition that in the dynamic process of development these two processes are related leads me to conclude that clusters and diversity need not be such strange bedfellows after all, and that a rational approach to economic development can leverage the strengths of each and offset weaknesses. I follow this discussion by introducing a cluster assessment diversification strategy (CADS) apparatus that can be used to measure …

Next Focal Point Of China's Stock Market: Earnings-But Can We Trust The Numbers?, Shaomin Li, Seung Ho Park Jan 2015

Next Focal Point Of China's Stock Market: Earnings-But Can We Trust The Numbers?, Shaomin Li, Seung Ho Park

Management Faculty Publications

[Introduction] The recent stock market turmoil and the economic slowdown in China have kept analysts busy projecting where the economy is going and what the government will do. The Chinese government has also issued a number of reforms of state-owned enterprises and other aspects of the economy. However, these reforms and increased scrutiny by both regulators and investors will be futile unless larger problems with market fundamentals in Chinese companies are addressed.

While the world's attention has been fixed on what the Chinese government is going to do next, there has been a tendency to neglect market fundamentals and to …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis conducts a general assessment of the: main drivers of land use change; recent and projected land use patterns; and the evolution of agriculture in the Dakotas. Specifically, it determines the main motives of land use change in the Dakotas by investigating individual and joint effects of external drivers of land use change on farm operators’ decisions and also examines recent and projected agricultural land use patterns in the Dakotas. Farm operators’ perceptions about the evolution of agriculture in the Dakotas based on observed changes in their local area were also analyzed. The study region consists of 37 counties …

Why Do Countries Cooperate? The Effect Of Cross-Border Pollution, Eric D. Johnson Jan 2015

Why Do Countries Cooperate? The Effect Of Cross-Border Pollution, Eric D. Johnson

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

As evidence regarding the consequences of climate change grows, the need to act cooperatively becomes increasingly apparent. International environmental agreements are one of many means being pursued to improve environmental management and combat climate change at large. This study examines factors that influence international environmental treaty participation among European countries. Using panel data on 35 European countries for 1980-1999, joint treaty participation is estimated as a function of various globalization variables with specific attention given to the effects of cross-border air pollution, foreign direct investment, and trade. These results suggest that cross-border air pollution does increase cooperation even after controlling …

Do Democratic Governments Improve Environmental Quality?, Yoonsoo Nam Jan 2015

Do Democratic Governments Improve Environmental Quality?, Yoonsoo Nam

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

My research question is whether democratic countries improve the environment. This research question is important because many nowadays people are more than ever concerned about environmental quality, and researchers have produced mixed results of democratic governments’ effects on the environment. As an attempt to contribute to this area of research, I implement three different types of heterogeneity in the relationships between democratic countries and environmental quality. These three different types of heterogeneity include different environmental outcomes, separate components of democracy, and countries with different income levels. By using these three different types of heterogeneity, I may better understand the mechanisms …

Part 3: Digging Deeper: A Closer Look At Defense Spending In Virginia, Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University

State of the Commonwealth Reports

An estimated 11.8 percent of Virginia’s GDP depends upon defense spending. An important part of this are the contracts awarded to Virginia businesses by the Department of Defense. Two regions – Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads – account for 86 percent of these contracts.

For several years, both passenger traffic and the number of available seats have been in decline at nearly all of the Commonwealth’s airports. Reagan/Washington National and Charlottesville are the major exceptions. Decisions made by the U.S. Congress have placed a particular burden on Dulles International.

Virginians and all other Americans can vote with their feet and move from one location to another in response to job opportunities, amenities and other factors. Recently, Virginia has experienced very low or even negative levels of net domestic migration. We look at the migration experience of 358 metropolitan regions nationally (including the largest eight in Virginia) to provide some answers.

Innovation And Productivity: Evidence From China, Jingying Xu Jan 2015

Innovation And Productivity: Evidence From China, Jingying Xu

Honors Theses

This paper investigates a lesser-known effect of innovation on the productivity of manufacturing firms in China using data that cover more than 330,000 firms across 40 sectors from 1998 to 2008. Innovation plays a key role in the productivity of firms and it matters for all types of firms, new as well as established. The ratio of new product output to the firm’s total outputs is used to measure innovation ability in this paper. A higher ratio is expected to have a positive impact on a firm’s productivity since new products are likely to be more differentiated than old products …

Market Microstructure And Abnormal Returns: An Analysis Of Nyse And Sgx Securities, Alex Ng Jan 2015

Market Microstructure And Abnormal Returns: An Analysis Of Nyse And Sgx Securities, Alex Ng

Honors Theses

This paper investigates the differences in the abnormal returns of securities in the context of the earnings announcement in both the United States (NYSE) and Singapore (SGX) markets[1]. Despite the similarities between both exchanges, there exist two key market microstructure differences: the free float factor (i.e. the portion of listed share capital that is freely traded on the market) and lot size (i.e. the minimum number of shares that an investor can trade in a single transaction). While the difference in the lot size can be attributed to the intrinsic institutional differences between both exchanges, the involvement of …

Institutions, Distance, And Foreign Direct Investment, Charles Coffman Jan 2015

Institutions, Distance, And Foreign Direct Investment, Charles Coffman

Honors Theses

In this paper, I examine institutional differences between countries and the effect that those differences have on FDI flows using data from 193 countries and ten institutional indicators from the Index of Economic Freedom. I find a statistically significant result for five institutional distance variables. My results also support existing literature that claims that strong institutions increase FDI flows. I found that strong institutions are negatively associated with FDI inflows to low income countries, with the exception of trade and natural resources, suggesting that firms are investing in low income countries for natural resources and cheap production that can be …

Investigating The Endogeneity Of Risk Attitudes: Experimental Evidence Involving Cooperation And Competition, Erik Solli Jan 2015

Investigating The Endogeneity Of Risk Attitudes: Experimental Evidence Involving Cooperation And Competition, Erik Solli

Honors Theses

Individual decision making is at the core of microeconomics. Rarely, however, are decisions made in environments without some element of uncertainty or even in isolation. While people may differ in their inherent willingness to take on risk, their preferences could change when new information is learned or a new relationship is fostered. I designed an experiment in which participants were asked to make investment decisions involving different levels of risk. The participants completed task between these gambles which allowed me to introduce competitive and collaborative relationships. I was interested in: (1) understanding the factors that are important to explaining risk …

Reputation Effects And Hedonic Pricing At The Portland Fish Exchange, Kush Jadeja Jan 2015

Reputation Effects And Hedonic Pricing At The Portland Fish Exchange, Kush Jadeja

Honors Theses

The Portland Fish Exchange, founded in 1986, is America’s first all-display fresh seafood auction. The ability to observe each lot of fish before it is sold enables buyers to offer prices that reflect the perceived quality of the fish they bid on. As a result, the price per pound paid for lots of identical fish can vary can vary significantly on any given day, implying that some boats or sellers may benefit from a “reputation” effect for high quality fish. In this study I explore the factors that explain the price differentials paid for a given type of fish using …

Ghana's E-Zwich System And The Characteristics Of Innovation, James T. Arthur Jan 2015

Ghana's E-Zwich System And The Characteristics Of Innovation, James T. Arthur

Masters Theses

In 2008, the Central Bank of Ghana launched the first ever biometric money, e-zwich, in hopes of promoting branchless banking and financial inclusion. Despite been hailed as an innovative policy aimed at transforming the financial industry of the country e-zwich has yet to realize its full potential. A number of studies has been conducted to highlight the many challenges the system faces. This study was also aimed at seeking an explanation to the relative ineffectiveness or failures of e-zwich system but through a theoretical framework. Using Rogers' (2003) framework on the characteristics of innovation, the study seeks to explain why …

Remittances And Economic Growth Determinants In Low, Lower Middle, And Upper Middle Income Countries: A Comparative Study, Md Shahedur Rahaman Chowdhury Jan 2015

Remittances And Economic Growth Determinants In Low, Lower Middle, And Upper Middle Income Countries: A Comparative Study, Md Shahedur Rahaman Chowdhury

Masters Theses

The research uses pooled cross-country times series for the time period 1981-2010 to investigate the impacts of remittances and other economic growth determinants on economic growth of low-income, lower-middle income, and upper-middle income economies. This study divides this 30-year period into six non-overlapping five-year periods. This paper contributes to the literature on remittances, economic growth indicators, and economic growth in novel ways. The research finds that remittances are not associated with the economic growth of low-income economies. However, the research concludes that remittances are positively and significantly related to economic growth of Lower Middle-Income and Upper Middle-Income Economies. Nevertheless, the …

What Do Longitudinal Data On Millions Of Hospital Visits Tell Us About The Value Of Public Health Insurance As A Safety Net For The Young And Privately Insured?, Amanda E. Kowalski Jan 2015

What Do Longitudinal Data On Millions Of Hospital Visits Tell Us About The Value Of Public Health Insurance As A Safety Net For The Young And Privately Insured?, Amanda E. Kowalski

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Young people with private health insurance sometimes transition to the public health insurance safety net after they get sick, but popular sources of cross-sectional data obscure how frequently these transitions occur. We use longitudinal data on almost all hospital visits in New York from 1995 to 2011. We show that young privately insured individuals with diagnoses that require more hospital visits in subsequent years are more likely to transition to public insurance. If we ignore the longitudinal transitions in our data, we obscure over 80% of the value of public health insurance to the young and privately insured.

Converging Divergences In Formal And Informal Work: Longitudinal Evidence From Mexico, Diana Denham, Chris Tilly Jan 2015

Converging Divergences In Formal And Informal Work: Longitudinal Evidence From Mexico, Diana Denham, Chris Tilly

University Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Analyses of neoliberal labor market restructuring debate whether neoliberalism is homogenizing jobs or polarizing them. Analyses of informal employment debate whether such employment is inferior, and if so, if it is typically a transition or a trap. This paper speaks to both debates, using a three time-point (2006, 2007, 2008) longitudinal survey of retail workers in the state of Tlaxcala, Mexico, to contrast workers’ experiences across the spectrum of formal and informal work. Using the longitudinal data, the paper compares workers’ trajectories, exploring how they make choices and navigate transitions between more formal and more informal work. A qualitative portion …

Medicaid As An Investment In Children: What Is The Long-Term Impact On Tax Receipts?, David W. Brown, Amanda E. Kowalski, Ithai Z. Lurie Jan 2015

Medicaid As An Investment In Children: What Is The Long-Term Impact On Tax Receipts?, David W. Brown, Amanda E. Kowalski, Ithai Z. Lurie

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We use administrative data from the IRS to examine the long-term impact of childhood Medicaid expansions. We use eligibility variation by cohort and state that we can relate to outcomes graphically. We find that children with greater Medicaid eligibility paid more in cumulative taxes by age 28. They collected less in EITC payments, and the women had higher cumulative wages. Our estimates imply that the government will recoup 56 cents of each dollar spent on childhood Medicaid by the time these children reach age 60. This return does not include estimated private gains from increased college attendance and decreased mortality.

Identification- And Singularity-Robust Inference For Moment Condition Models, Donald W.K. Andrews, Patrik Guggenberger Jan 2015

Identification- And Singularity-Robust Inference For Moment Condition Models, Donald W.K. Andrews, Patrik Guggenberger

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper introduces a new identification- and singularity-robust conditional quasi-likelihood ratio (SR-CQLR) test and a new identification- and singularity-robust Anderson and Rubin (1949) (SR-AR) test for linear and nonlinear moment condition models. Both tests are very fast to compute. The paper shows that the tests have correct asymptotic size and are asymptotically similar (in a uniform sense) under very weak conditions. For example, in i.i.d. scenarios, all that is required is that the moment functions and their derivatives have 2 + γ bounded moments for some γ > 0: No conditions are placed on the expected Jacobian of the moment functions, …

The ‘Peter Pan Syndrome’ In Emerging Markets: The Productivity-Transparency Tradeoff In It Adoption, K. Sudhir, Debabrata Talukdar Jan 2015

The ‘Peter Pan Syndrome’ In Emerging Markets: The Productivity-Transparency Tradeoff In It Adoption, K. Sudhir, Debabrata Talukdar

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Firms make investments in technology to increase productivity. But in emerging markets, where a culture of informality is widespread, information technology (IT) investments leading to greater transparency can impose a cost through higher taxes and need for regulatory compliance. This tendency of firms to avoid productivity-enhancing technologies and remain small to avoid transparency has been dubbed the “Peter Pan Syndrome.” We examine whether firms make the tradeoff between productivity and transparency by examining IT adoption in the Indian retail sector. We find that computer technology adoption is lower when firms have motivations to avoid transparency. Specifically, technology adoption is lower …
