Job Satisfaction: The Eventual Smidgeon For Occupational Consummation And Contentment In Profession, Dr. Manodip Ray Chaudhuri, Partha Naskar
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Organizations thrive on people. At the heart of all excellence at work it is the degree and extent of human commitment that matters most. To have a committed workforce it is quite imperative to ensure satisfaction, consummation, and fulfillment in the minds of employees. A satisfied worker is a happy worker and of course can prove to be most productive, prolific, and industrious in his work and in execution of his responsibilities. In this paper, delineation is done as to what are the underlying elements of the subject matter of job satisfaction. With a brief introduction of the concept of …

Modeling Volatility Of Islamic Stock Indexes: Empirical Evidence And Comparative Analysis, Mohammed Salah Chiadmi, Fouzia Ghait
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This paper aims to investigate the volatility behavior of Islamic stock indexes compared to their conventional counterparts. Four major Islamic stock indexes have been the subject of our paper namely the Standard and Poor’s Shariah index (S&P Shariah), the Dow Jones Islamic Market (DJIM) index, the FTSE Islamic index, the MSCI Islamic World as well as their conventional counterparts, respectively, the S&P 500, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), the FTSE All world, and the MSCI World Indexes. GARCH models (Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedastic) are used to estimate the conditional variance, particularly the Exponential GARCH model due to its ability …
International Transmission Of Interest Rates And The Open Economy Trilemma In Asia, Hwee Kwan Chow
International Transmission Of Interest Rates And The Open Economy Trilemma In Asia, Hwee Kwan Chow
Research Collection School Of Economics
There has recently been much discussion on the relevance of the open economy trilemma in the context of deepening financial integration of countries across the world (see for instance, Rey (2013) and Devereux and Yetman (2014)). The open economy trilemma is an important issue for the countries in Asia not least because their financial systems are small and exchange rate stability is crucial to their economic growth. This paper investigates whether the economies in Asia are still bound by the "impossible trinity" by examining the interest rate transmission from the US to the region before and after the onset of …
Bayesian Analysis Of Bubbles In Asset Prices, Andras Fulop, Jun Yu
Bayesian Analysis Of Bubbles In Asset Prices, Andras Fulop, Jun Yu
Research Collection School Of Economics
We develop a new asset price model where the dynamic structure of the asset price, after the fundamental value is removed, is subject to two different regimes. One regime reflects the normal period where the asset price divided by the dividend is assumed to follow a mean-reverting process around a stochastic long run mean. This latter is allowed to account for possible smooth structural change. The second regime reflects the bubble period with explosive behavior. Stochastic switches between two regimes and non-constant probabilities of exit from the bubble regime are both allowed. A Bayesian learning approach is employed to jointly …

Field Experiment Tests For Discrimination Against Hispanics In The U.S. Rental Housing Market, Andrew R. Hanson, Michael Santas
Field Experiment Tests For Discrimination Against Hispanics In The U.S. Rental Housing Market, Andrew R. Hanson, Michael Santas
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
This article tests for discrimination against Hispanics in the U.S. rental housing market using e-mail correspondence with landlords advertising units online. We divide Hispanics into two groups: those that appear assimilated into American culture and recent immigrants. We find little difference in the treatment of assimilated Hispanics and whites; however, Hispanics we portray as recent immigrants receive less favorable treatment with margins of net discrimination as large as 6.89% of landlords. We also find discrimination varies significantly at the region level and by the ethnic composition of neighborhoods.

Towards A Common Good Model Of The Firm, Benito L. Teehankee, Luisito C. Abueg, Mariel Monica R. Sauler
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Business schools that have joined the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) are committed to develop teaching tools and to research on frameworks that can help orient business students towards becoming more socially responsible. The tendency of self-interested models of economics, such as the standard textbook profit maximizing model of the firm, in promoting selfinterested behavior among students has been revealed by research. It becomes important, therefore, to develop models of the firm which are more socially oriented. The paper presents a baseline model of the firm which incorporates the provision of living wages and benefits for the employees of …
Women Empowerment Through Social Initiatives: An Indian Story, Divya Singhal
Women Empowerment Through Social Initiatives: An Indian Story, Divya Singhal
DLSU Business & Economics Review
It is now proven that the relationship between business and society is integral in the success of any enterprise. With the growing role of business in society, organizations are becoming more “socially responsible” and engaging in various social initiatives. Organizations involve themselves in various kinds of initiatives generally targeted towards a selected underprivileged section of the society or a specific area like education, health, and environment. Women play an important role in building sustainable development. Promoting women empowerment and widening their contribution in decision-making roles are key strategies for sustainable development. The present paper is an attempt to highlight women …
(Wp 2014-03) Bounded Rationality And Bounded Individuality, John B. Davis
(Wp 2014-03) Bounded Rationality And Bounded Individuality, John B. Davis
Economics Working Papers
This paper argues that since the utility function conception of the individual is derived from standard rationality theory, the view that rationality is bounded suggests that individuality should also be seen as bounded. The meaning of this idea is developed in terms of two ways in which individuality can be said to be bounded, with one bound associated with Kahneman and Tversky’s prospect theory and the ‘new’ behavioral economics and a second bound associated with Simon’s evolutionary thinking and the ‘old’ behavioral economics. The paper then shows how different bounded individuality conceptions operate in nudge economics, agent-based modeling, and social …

The implication of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 is free mobilization of goods, services, labours, and capital among the member countries. This encourages Indonesia to strengthen its commitments on the construction service sector. This study aims to map Indonesia's commitments in the construction service sector under the ASEAN Framework Agreement on Services (AFAS) with Hoekman Index and investigates the impacts on the macroeconomic and sector performances. The GTAP model analysis shows that Indonesia does not gain from the service liberalization, there is only slight increase of macroeconomic and sector performance. A 50% or full liberalization cause few increase on …

Purpose – What seems like a new social anthropology of global regulation is an endeavour much too grand for this paper, even though it has much merit. To contain the analysis which follows, the discussion of social embeddedness will be restricted to a comparison of markets which retain some local or regional integrity from those which have become largely removed from cultural or communal social bonds. An example is between markets trading in goods and services with a consumer base which is local and subsistence, and markets in derivative products that are inextricably dependent on supranational location. The paper aims …

Trade And Financial Integration, Extensive Margin, And Income Divergence, Haiping Zhang
Trade And Financial Integration, Extensive Margin, And Income Divergence, Haiping Zhang
Research Collection School Of Economics
We revisit the classical question on economic integration and income convergence in a two-sector OLG model with financial frictions and sectoral heterogeneity in minimum investment requirements (MIR, hereafter). The extensive margin of investment is a critical channel through which aggregate income may become a determinant of comparative advantage. Free trade allows the rich (poor) country to specialize partially or completely in the high-MIR (low-MIR) sector which has a high (low) return endogenously. The specialization effect interacts with the neoclassical effect, which may lead to income divergence among inherently identical countries. Similarly, financial integration may also lead to income divergence through …

How Effective Can Ex Post Destruction Alleviate The Hold-Up Problem?, Huan Wang, Juyuan Zhang, Yi Zhang
How Effective Can Ex Post Destruction Alleviate The Hold-Up Problem?, Huan Wang, Juyuan Zhang, Yi Zhang
Research Collection School Of Economics
We first investigate whether or not ex post destruction can possibly alleviate the hold-up problem in a one-shot game between a supplier and a buyer. The answer is yes but only when the buyer believes that the supplier might be a Homo reciprocans agent with sufficiently strong propensity for reciprocity. Under incomplete information with informed supplier, investment is made feasible by the “mismatch” between the buyer’s belief of stronger supplier reciprocal propensity and a de facto weaker one. Under incomplete information with uninformed supplier, the “mismatch” between the buyer’s belief of weaker supplier reciprocal propensity and a stronger ex post …

Random Dictatorship Domains, Shurojit Chatterji, Arunava Sen, Huaxia Zeng
Research Collection School Of Economics
A domain of preference orderings is a random dictatorship domain if every strategy-proof random social choice function satisfying unanimity defined on the domain is a random dictatorship. Gibbard (1977) showed that the universal domain is a random dictatorship domain. We ask whether an arbitrary dictatorial domain is a random dictatorship domain and show that the answer is negative by constructing dictatorial domains that admit anonymous, unanimous, strategy-proof random social choice functions which are not random dictatorships. Our result applies to the constrained voting model. Lastly, we show that substantial strengthenings of linked domains (a class of dictatorial domains introduced in …

Strategic Management Research: The Missing Linchpin In Developing Economy’S Context, Irfan Saleem
Business Review
Research is conducted to identify impact of adopting Strategic HRM on HR outcomes (i.e. job satisfaction and organizational commitment) and performance measures (i.e. organizational and, individual performance) in order to the fill empirical gap in developing economy’s context. Cased based survey approach has been adopted to retrieve the evidence from companies. Three organizations are studied in depth to identify the evidence about strategic role of HRM. Objectivism has been adopted to test ontological assumption whereas positivism has been incorporated to test the epistemological assumption to prove the nature of reality about Strategic HRM. Results depict that effective Strategic HRM adoption …

Sequential Investment, Hold-Up, And Ownership Structure, Juyuan Zhang, Yi Zhang
Research Collection School Of Economics
We construct a sequential investment model to investigate individual firms’ strategic choices of organizational forms when outsourcing their intermediate products. Our results indicate that as a result of the encouragement effect of sequential complementary investments, sequential investment alleviates the underinvestment caused by the hold-up problem. Thereafter, we analyze the impact of sequential investment on the choice of ownership structure. We show that contrary to the result of the standard property rights theory, strictly complementary assets could be owned separately.

Singapore’S Competitiveness At Risk, Augustine H. H. Tan
Research Collection School Of Economics
Singapore’s disappointing second-quarter growth of 2.1 per cent compared with the same period last year has raised concerns about the impact of economic restructuring. When compared with the last quarter, growth even dipped 0.8 per cent. At the same time, productivity performance has been dismal. After rising by 2.2 per cent in 2011, productivity dropped by 1.4 per cent in 2012 and another 0.2 per cent last year.

Business Review
This probe examines the puzzles or challenges of globalization to developing as well as developed countries. Indeed this study is undertaken in nexus with another enquiry of the authors about the challenges confronted and strategically tackled to globally operating and expanding companies based in Pakistan. Globalization offers both opportunities and threats and embodies merits and demerits for people of the world. Mainstream globalization is recognized as acceptable or idealistic part of it, whereas deviant globalization is recognized as unacceptable or dark part of it. The investigation isqualitative in type and nature. From the extant literature, it extracts various theories and …

Cross-Hauling In Input-Output Tables: Comments On Charm, Randall Jackson
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
This brief note draws further attention to cross-hauling in regional input-output table estimation, and specifically identifies conceptual issues associated with Kronenberg”s CHARM method for adjusting input-output regionalization methods. Despite the shortcomings of the CHARM approach as it now stands, this is a very important line of research. I believe that progress made on the CHARM method is encouraging, and hope that future work will resolve remaining issues.
Social Interactions In Breast Cancer Prevention Among Women In The United States, Natallia Gray
Social Interactions In Breast Cancer Prevention Among Women In The United States, Natallia Gray
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation contributes to the field of health economics, which, in the past couple of decades, has substantially increased our understanding of the determinants of human health, health-related behavior, and health care choices.
A large body of literature has documented the influence of peer group behavior on individual choices. The purpose of my research is to examine the extent of such a phenomenon in breast cancer preventive behavior. Using Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System (BRFSS) surveys from 1993-2008, I measured the effect of other female screening behavior on an individual's decision to have a routine breast cancer screening by calculating …

The Business Of Coupons-Do Coupons Lead To Repeat Purchases?, Margaret P. Ross
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
In recent years, couponing has emerged as a pop culture phenomenon. Businesses of all types are taking advantage of this resource by revamping their out-dated programs and turning them into something fresh to excite customers. Many questions remain unanswered concerning the viability, profitability, and usefulness of coupons. This study is an analysis of the effectiveness of coupons in enticing return purchases in the soft-drink category and the effectiveness of price discriminating at this grocery store chain. The dataset is comprised of household level grocery store transactions compiled by dunnhumby USA for 2,500 households over a period of two years. An …

The Fair And Laissez-Faire Markets: From A Neoliberal Laissez-Faire Baseline To A Fair Market, Eric L. Dixon
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
The essay begins with a brief overview of the role of the neoliberal conception of the laissez-faire market in modern political economy. The essay then goes on to defend three claims: 1) the laissez-faire version of a market should not be considered the economic ideal or baseline version of a market because often the fundamental conditions required to reach a genuine equilibrium are unfulfilled under a laissez-faire environment, 2) a distribution resultant from a laissez-faire market should not be considered the ultima facie just distributive baseline because an unregulated market may allocate commodities according to morally arbitrary factors and requires …

Do Capital Tax Incentives Attract New Businesses? Evidence Across Industries From The New Markets Tax Credit, Kaitlyn M. Harger, Amanda Ross
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
All levels of government pursue policies to attract new businesses with the hope that these enterprises will create local economic growth. In this paper, we use the New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) to determine the effect of a capital tax credit on where firms in different types of industries locate. When estimating the impact of the NMTC on business location, there are likely to be unobservable local characteristics that are correlated with where businesses choose to open that would cause OLS estimates to be biased. To control for the endogenous selection, we use a plausibly exogenous eligibility cutoff and compare …
