The Impact Of Social Capital On Bank Risk-Taking, Wenjing Xie
The Impact Of Social Capital On Bank Risk-Taking, Wenjing Xie
Lingnan Theses
The concept of “social capital” has received considerable attention these years. Yet, few studies have explored the connections between social capital and bank risk-taking. In this study, I discuss the theory of social capital and its relevance to financial market behavior, and then I analyze the relationship between social capital and bank risk-taking across countries. To measure social capital, I follow Knack and Keefer (1997) and use the data of trust and civic norms collected from the World Values Survey. My measure of bank risk-taking is the nature logarithm of Z-score of each bank. Empirical results show that bank risk-taking …
Three Essays On Large Panel Data Models With Cross-Sectional Dependence, Yonghui Zhang
Three Essays On Large Panel Data Models With Cross-Sectional Dependence, Yonghui Zhang
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
My dissertation consists of three essays which contribute new theoretical results to large panel data models with cross-sectional dependence. These essays try to answer or partially answer some prominent questions such as how to detect the presence of cross-sectional dependence and how to capture the latent structure of cross-sectional dependence and estimate parameters efficiently by removing its effects. Chapter 2 introduces a nonparametric test for cross-sectional contemporaneous dependence in large dimensional panel data models based on the squared distance between the pair-wise joint density and the product of the marginals. The test can be applied to either raw observable data …
A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of A 25% Rps In Michigan, Fei Li
A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of A 25% Rps In Michigan, Fei Li
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Michigan depends heavily on fossil fuels to generate electricity. Compared with fossil fuels, electricity generation from renewable energy produces less pollutants emissions. A Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) is a mandate that requires electric utilities to generate a certain amount of electricity from renewable energy sources. This thesis applies the Cost-Benefits Analysis (CBA) method to investigate the impacts of implementing a 25% in Michigan by 2025. It is found that a 25% RPS will create about $20.12 billion in net benefits to the State. Moreover, if current tax credit policies will not change until 2025, its net present value will increase …

The Wonder-Clause, Anna Gelpern, Mitu Gulati
The Wonder-Clause, Anna Gelpern, Mitu Gulati
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The Greek debt crisis prompted EU officials to embark on a radical reconstruction of the European sovereign debt markets. Prominently featured in this reconstruction was a set of contract provisions called Collective Action Clauses, or CACs. CACs are supposed to help governments and private creditors to renegotiate unsustainable debt contracts, and obviate the need for EU bailouts. But European sovereign debt contacts were already amenable to restructuring; adding CACs could make it harder. Why, then, promote CACs at all, and cast them in such a central role in the market reform initiative? Using interviews with participants in the initiative and …
Banks And Governments: An Arial View, Anna Gelpern
Banks And Governments: An Arial View, Anna Gelpern
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Financial systems and public treasuries are communicating vessels: strength or weakness in one flows to the other, and back. This chapter considers the implications of this insight using case studies from Europe, Asia, and Latin America. The connection is not unique to Europe, although it does not always result in feedback effects, or the ‘doom loop’ that has made headlines since 2010. Events now known as banking or government debt crises often have had elements of both, and could have gone either way. Policy and political choices determined their path. In all cases, governments were as indispensable for resolving banking …
The Equivalence Of Economies And Returns To Scale Revisited: Nonlinear Expansion Paths And The Definition Of Scale
Journal of Economics and Finance Education
That increasing returns to scale is a sufficient condition for generating economies of scale is well understood. Many instructors and most textbooks, however, report that increasing returns is a necessary condition for scale economies. While the necessity of decreasing returns in generating diseconomies of scale can be proven locally for smooth technologies or generally for homothetic or non-variable returns technologies, no such requirement exists when considering discrete scale adjustments along more realistic expansion paths. We argue that the practice of equating economies and returns to scale is an inappropriate generalization that resulted from a historical preference for homothetic production functions.
Euro Zone Crisis Management And The New Social Europe, Philomila Tsoukala
Euro Zone Crisis Management And The New Social Europe, Philomila Tsoukala
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
This article analyzes the changes in European governance since the beginning of the euro crisis in relation to the project of constructing Social Europe. The article tracks the incorporation of a structural reform agenda originally designed as bailout conditionality for countries on the verge of default into EU economic governance as a strategy for growth. Beyond the contestable grounds of this reform agenda, its adoption by the EU in the mode of crisis management poses serious questions of legitimacy. The new enhanced economic coordination process includes obligatory guidelines in domains under the legislative competence of Member States, such as labor …
Examining The Relationship Between Environmental Policy And Economic Competitiveness In The United States And The European Union, Scott A. Trail
Examining The Relationship Between Environmental Policy And Economic Competitiveness In The United States And The European Union, Scott A. Trail
Masters Theses
In sum, when considering the findings of all three chapters of this thesis cumulatively, several implications are worth noting in regards to the relationship between environmental policy and economic competitiveness. First, the notion that adopting stringent environmental standards will impede on a state's ability to remain economically competitive was shown to be the exception, rather than the rule in all of the cases surveyed in this thesis. Moreover, the cumulative research throughout this thesis has shown the depth of complexity that exists between environmental and economic policy networks. Each chapter illustrated how the general relationship between government and private interests …
Do Spatially Targeted Redevelopment Programs Spillover?, Andrew R. Hanson, Shawn Rohlin
Do Spatially Targeted Redevelopment Programs Spillover?, Andrew R. Hanson, Shawn Rohlin
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
This paper estimates spillover effects from a spatially-targeted redevelopment program, the Federal Empowerment Zone (EZ), on neighboring and economically similar areas. EZs are a set of generous tax incentives and grants aimed at small, economically depressed areas of large U.S. cities. We find areas that border or are economically similar to EZ locations experience a decline in the number of establishments and employment compared to areas that border or are similar to rejected EZ applicants. We also demonstrate that using spillover prone areas to estimate program effects causes upward bias when the spillover is negative. We find that for many …
Til Recession Do Us Part: Booms, Busts, And Divorce In The United States, Abdur Chowdhury
Til Recession Do Us Part: Booms, Busts, And Divorce In The United States, Abdur Chowdhury
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
A general hypothesis regarding the impact of permanent income levels and business cycle fluctuations on divorce rate at the state level in the United States is analysed in this article. Based on the data for 45 states over the sample period of 1978–2009, it is shown that the higher the level of transitory income, the higher the incidence of divorce. In other words, divorce is pro-cyclical.
Identity, John B. Davis
Identity, John B. Davis
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
The concept of identity has begun to be employed only relatively recently in economics, and accordingly still lacks a standard meaning and established set of applications in the subject. However, in its most influential initial uses by Amartya Sen (1999) and George Akerlof and Rachel Kranton (2000) it has been developed largely in terms of the concept of social identity (though in quite different ways). Social identity as understood in social psychology (see Brown, 2000), where the concept was influentially developed by Erik Erikson in connection with his idea of an identity crisis (Erikson, 1950), concerns individuals’ ‘identification with’ social …

The Impact Of Work-Limiting Disabilities On Earnings And Income Mobility, Nicholas A. Jolly
The Impact Of Work-Limiting Disabilities On Earnings And Income Mobility, Nicholas A. Jolly
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
This article uses the 1968–2007 waves of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) to examine how work-limiting disabilities influence the intragenerational earnings and income mobility of individuals. The results show that work-limiting disabilities increase the probability of downward mobility for several years after onset. Furthermore, the probability of being in the bottom portions of the distributions increases significantly, not only during the year of onset but also for at least 10 years afterwards. These results are more pronounced for those individuals suffering from a disability that is more chronic or severe in nature. Income from spousal earnings and government …
Intertemporal Valuation Of River Restoration, Andrew G. Meyer
Intertemporal Valuation Of River Restoration, Andrew G. Meyer
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
Willingness to pay for an environmental improvement is a function of how long it takes to deliver the improvement. To measure the effect of time on benefits, I utilize a discrete choice experiment that includes an attribute for delay until the improvement occurs and simultaneously estimate discount rates and valuation parameters. I estimate the present value of immediate and delayed Minnesota River Basin improvements using discount rates directly estimated from the econometric model. Compared to an immediate river basin cleanup, Minnesota residents lose almost half of the benefits when cleanup is delayed by 5 years.

Legislation With Endogenous Preferences, Aviad Heifetz, Ella Segev, Eric L. Talley
Legislation With Endogenous Preferences, Aviad Heifetz, Ella Segev, Eric L. Talley
Faculty Scholarship
It has long been recognized that individuals' preferences adapt to the social, economic and legal environment in which they take part, in addition to reacting to incentives and constraints given these preferences. Therefore, the design of such incentives via legislation or regulation should better take into account also its own effect on preferences, in order to avoid endogenous preference adaptation curtailing the designer's aims. Furthermore, the endogeneity of preferences poses a dilemma to the social planner whether to maximize welfare having in mind the original preferences of individuals, or rather the preferences that emerge endogenously with the intervention mechanism. This …
Incarceration And The Economic Fortunes Of Urban Neighborhoods, Jeffrey A. Fagan, Valerie West
Incarceration And The Economic Fortunes Of Urban Neighborhoods, Jeffrey A. Fagan, Valerie West
Faculty Scholarship
This chapter turns to the response of the criminal justice system to neighborhood violence, in particular examining to what extent persistently high levels of incarceration can depress economic well-being and human capital in disadvantaged and racially segregated communities. A panel analysis of New York City neighborhoods between 1985 and 1996, a period in which the city's violent-crime rates both rose and fell sharply, provides evidence that high incarceration rates reduce income growth, educational attainment, and work experience in disadvantaged and racially segregated neighborhoods. To rectify this, targeted micro investment and housing development in such areas can break the connection between …

Creating Knowledge
It is my great pleasure to introduce the sixth volume of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences’ “Creating Knowledge,” our undergraduate student scholarship and research journal. First published in 2008, the journal is the outcome of an initiative to enhance and enrich the academic quality of the student experience within the college. Through this publication, the college seeks to encourage students to become actively engaged in creating scholarship and research and gives them a venue for the publication of their essays.
This sixth volume is, however, unlike the previous ones in one major respect: the papers in this …
The Response Of Commercial Banks To Credit Stimuli, Denise Williams Streeter
The Response Of Commercial Banks To Credit Stimuli, Denise Williams Streeter
Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration
This dissertation calls upon the theory of financial intermediation (Diamond and Dybvig, 1983) and the credit channel theory of monetary policy effectiveness (Bernanke and Gertler, 1995) to show how commercial banks responded to the trillions of dollars of innovations to stimulate the credit markets during the 2008 global financial crisis. Specifically, loan-level data is used to conduct univariate, regression, and event-study analyses to address the research question of, "Did United States- and European Union-based commercial banks respond to credit stimuli with increased commercial lending during the stimulus period of October 1, 2007 through September 30, 2011 when compared to the …
Disinvestment And Suburban Decline, Robert Streetar
Disinvestment And Suburban Decline, Robert Streetar
School of Business Student Theses and Dissertations
Beginning in the mid-1970s, U.S. suburbs started to experience many of the same problems typically associated with earlier inner-city decline including accelerating income decline, increasing family poverty, falling housing prices, growing income polarization, escalating crime, and increasing racial and ethnic diversity.
Conventional wisdom often lays the blame for neighborhood decline on who moves in and who moves out. This is understandable, as neighborhood migration is easily observable. It is the hypothesis of this research, though, that the less visible disinvestment of capital from suburban neighborhoods is an initial cause of suburban decline that precedes and coincides with the more observable …
How Routing An Interstate Highway Through South Minneapolis Disrupted An African-American Neighborhood, Ernest Lee Lloyd
How Routing An Interstate Highway Through South Minneapolis Disrupted An African-American Neighborhood, Ernest Lee Lloyd
School of Business Student Theses and Dissertations
In 1959, the Minnesota Department of Highways (MHD), renamed the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) in 1976, commenced the construction of Interstate 35W proceeding North from Richfield through South Minneapolis to Lake Street (the Richfield-Minneapolis segment) which razed more than 50 square blocks of homes and businesses. The segment of this vast project built between Stevens Avenue South and Second Avenue South, completed in 1967, was part of the National System of Interstate and Defense Highways enacted by Congress in 1956. An area contiguous to the Interstate 35W project was located from Stevens Avenue South on the West, to Nicollet …
Does School District And Municipality Border Congruence Matter? A Spatial Hedonic Approach, Joshua Hall
Does School District And Municipality Border Congruence Matter? A Spatial Hedonic Approach, Joshua Hall
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Research on zoning typically assumes city planners aim to maximize housing prices with their land use decisions, either explicitly for public choice reasons or implicitly through the approval of land uses that create local net benefits. Noncongruence of school district and municipality borders severs the link between costs and benefits in the eyes of the median voter, however, which could result in excessive residential development and fiscal externalities that lowers property values. This paper uses a hedonic approach to indirectly observe the presence of these externalities. Border congruency between school districts and municipalities in Ohio is measured using GIS data …
Some Brief Syllabus Advice For The Young Economist, Emily Chamlee-Wright, Joshua Hall
Some Brief Syllabus Advice For The Young Economist, Emily Chamlee-Wright, Joshua Hall
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
We touch on three major pieces of syllabus language that we think can help young economists manage their economics classes in a liberal arts environment. Like the writing of a constitution, it is not enough to just copy the words on the page in order for them to be effective. Instead they must fit the “facts on the ground” and the day-to-day experiences of students. If the syllabus talks about valuing everyone’s time and yet the classroom experience does not reflect that, the syllabus language is useless. Like constitutions, however, syllabi are useful as a starting point for nurturing a …

Does Human Genetic Diversity Affect Net Productivity?, Breyon Jontae Williams
Does Human Genetic Diversity Affect Net Productivity?, Breyon Jontae Williams
Theses and Dissertations
Quamrul Ashraf and Oded Galors' (2013) study, "The `Out of Africa' Hypothesis, Human Genetic Diversity, and Comparative Economic Development", seeks to explain cross-country variations in economic development, particularly per capita income, through variations in human genetic diversity. Their analysis depends on two fundamental assumptions; genetic diversity's positive effect upon technological productivity and its negative effect upon social capital. This study tests the validity of the results presented by Ashraf and Galor. Specifically, this study seeks to test whether or not the hump-shape relationship observed between income per capita and predicted genetic diversity is validated. Our empirical work supports their findings.

Faktor Politik Dalam Alokasi Dana Antarpemerintah Indonesia, M. Syareza L. Tobing, Bambang P. S. Brodjonegoro
Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia
The intergovernmental transfer system currently applied in Indonesia is intended to prevent the intervention of political powers. However, there are indications of political determinants behind central government transfers to sub-national governments. In order to prove the existence of these political factors, this research utilizes empirical panel data models of Dana Alokasi Umum (DAU), Dana Dekonsentrasi and Tugas Pembantuan using political variables. Results show that while there are no significant political variables in the DAU and Dana Dekonsentrasi models, there is a political determinant behind the amount of Dana Tugas Pembantuan, where a higher seat share for the Golkar …
