Integrated Scenarios Of Energy-Related Co2 Emissions In Ireland: A Multi-Sectoral Analysis To 2020, Tadhg O'Mahony, Peng Zhou, John Sweeney Jan 2013

Integrated Scenarios Of Energy-Related Co2 Emissions In Ireland: A Multi-Sectoral Analysis To 2020, Tadhg O'Mahony, Peng Zhou, John Sweeney

Articles

This paper presents future scenarios of Irish energy-related CO2 emissions to 2020, using a combination of multi-sectoral decomposition analysis with scenario analysis. Alternative development paths, driving forces and sectoral contributions in different scenarios have been explored. The scenarios are quantified by using decomposition analysis as a Divisia Index SCenario GENerator (DISCGEN). The driving forces of population, economic and social development, energy resources and technology and governance and policies are discussed. A set of four integrated or ‘hybrid’ qualitative and quantitative baseline emission scenarios are developed. It is found that sectoral contributions and emissions in each scenario vary significantly. The …

Targeting The ‘Invisible’: Improving Entrepreneurship Opportunities For Informal Sector Women, Tonia Warnecke Jan 2013

Targeting The ‘Invisible’: Improving Entrepreneurship Opportunities For Informal Sector Women, Tonia Warnecke

Faculty Publications

In the wake of global economic downturn, policymakers in many developing countries are turning their gaze upon two things: private sector-led strategies for economic growth and women’s potential to contribute to this growth. As a consequence, female entrepreneurship has been an area of particular interest to policymakers, businesses, and non-governmental organizations, and many female-targeted policies and programs have been implemented, ranging from microfinance and subsidized loans to training and incubator programs. However, the focus on entrepreneurship as a development strategy conceptualizes entrepreneurship in a particular way—as opportunity entrepreneurship. Opportunity entrepreneurs can identify available opportunities and exploit them; they are often …

The Development Of The Risky Financial Behavior Scale: A Measure Of Financial Risk Tolerance, Yilong Zheng Jan 2013

The Development Of The Risky Financial Behavior Scale: A Measure Of Financial Risk Tolerance, Yilong Zheng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is an increasing need for a more comprehensive instrument to measure risk tolerance in human financial decision making studies. The traditional economic method and the more recent psychometric method of examining risk tolerance were both reviewed in the study. The purpose of this thesis was the initial development and validation of the Risky Financial Behavior Scale (RFBS), with items taken from four different domains noted in previous studies. Phase I and II consisted of item pool generation, construct determination from content experts' review and cognitive interviews. Data from these stages were collected and used for item revision prior to …

How Race Matters: The Parental And Neighborhood Determinants Of Child Protective Services Involvement, Emma Kalish Jan 2013

How Race Matters: The Parental And Neighborhood Determinants Of Child Protective Services Involvement, Emma Kalish

Economics Honors Projects

This paper examines the determinants of child protective services involvement. Using the Illinois Family Study I examine layers of interacting demographic, economic, and locational factors that might increase the probability of child protective services intervention. While the effects of some of these are well established in the literature, the inclusion of racial interaction terms is unique. Using these interaction terms I find that the effects of a variety of circumstances, from domestic violence to homelessness to welfare receipt, differ for African American and non-African American families.

Essays On The Digital Divide - Explorations Through Global, National And Individual Lenses, Maria Skaletsky Jan 2013

Essays On The Digital Divide - Explorations Through Global, National And Individual Lenses, Maria Skaletsky

2013

The Digital Divide has emerged as an important research and policy issue during the past thirty years. The divide exists at different levels, such as global, regional and individual levels. While extensive research already exists on this subject, the complexity of the issue presents opportunities for further research. In particular, there is ample scope for significantly contributing to the literature by leveraging recent analytics techniques, all the more since most of the literature on the Digital Divide relies on descriptive methods or on simple or multiple regression models. Therefore, the motivation for this study is two-fold. First, the Digital Divide …

Violence, Access, And Competition In The Market For Protection, Adam Smith Jan 2013

Violence, Access, And Competition In The Market For Protection, Adam Smith

Economics Department Faculty Publications & Research

We conduct a laboratory experiment to examine the performance of a market for protection. As the central feature of our treatment comparisons, we vary the access that “peasants” have to violence-empowered “elites”. The focus of the experiment is to observe how elites price and operate their protective services to peasants, and to observe the degree to which elites engage in wealth-destroying violence in competition amongst each other for wealth generating peasants. We find that greater access to peasants strikingly increases violence among the elites, but with limited access the elites markedly extract more tribute from the peasants. Our findings are …

Longitudinal Effects Of Improving Inter-Parental Relationships In Low-Income Couples: Child Outcomes, Erica Grace Moran Etter Jan 2013

Longitudinal Effects Of Improving Inter-Parental Relationships In Low-Income Couples: Child Outcomes, Erica Grace Moran Etter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Poverty and economic hardship create tremendous stress for families, and subsequently are risk factors for child psychopathology. The Fatherhood, Relationship, and Marriage Education (FRAME) program is a 14-hour psychoeducation intervention developed specifically to strengthen the ability of low-income mothers and fathers to reduce conflict, cope with stress, and co-parent effectively, hopefully helping to create more stable and secure environments for children. The FRAME study is a randomized controlled trial evaluating the efficacy of a couples-based intervention in a sample of 301 ethnically diverse low-income cohabiting mothers and fathers who are parenting at least one child together. Couples were randomly assigned …

There Is No Bournville In Africa: English Chocolate Makers, African Cocoa Producers, And The Ethics Of Capitalism, Ryan Harold Minor

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this study is to contextualize the present day use of forced labor in West Africa within the larger historical framework of ongoing international labor exploitation in the chocolate industry as a whole. This study examines the English chocolate industry from its beginnings in the mid 19th century to the present day and its founders' complex and often contradictory relationships with domestic factory workers and African cocoa producers.

Recommender Systems As A Mobile Marketing Service, Donald J. Kridel, Daniel R. Dolk, David Castillo Jan 2013

Recommender Systems As A Mobile Marketing Service, Donald J. Kridel, Daniel R. Dolk, David Castillo

Department of Economics Faculty Works

Recommender systems (RSs) have become a familiar artifact in cyberspace as a vehicle for increasing revenues while deepening customer loyalty and satisfaction. Typically RS are developed in house by companies with a large product line and customer base. However, the structure of RS is often straightforward, and effective systems can be developed at relatively low cost, and thus offered as a marketing service. We discuss the anatomy of a specific recommender system designed for a telecommunication carrier which uses predictive analytics in the form of collaborative filtering techniques to recommend products to users. Collaborative filtering (CF) is based upon the …

Payment Schemes And Moral Hazard, James Foust Jan 2013

Payment Schemes And Moral Hazard, James Foust

Honors Papers

In a principal-agent relationship, the principal offers a take-it-or-leave-it contract to the agent, who decides to either accept it or not. In game theory terminology, the principal agent relationship is a Stackelberg game in which the principal is the leader, proposing the contract, and the agent is the follower, choosing to accept or reject the proposal. Examples of such relationships are plentiful, such as a principal bank manager hiring an agent employee to work as a teller, a principal land-owner acting hiring an agent farmer to grow crops on her land, or an insurance company offering a home insurance plan …

Welfare Incentives And Interstate Migration: An Analysis Of The Migration Decisions Of Poor, Single Mothers, John P. Weis Jan 2013

Welfare Incentives And Interstate Migration: An Analysis Of The Migration Decisions Of Poor, Single Mothers, John P. Weis

Gettysburg Economic Review

The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of welfare incentives in the decision to move for poor, single mothers. Using micro-level data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) and other sources, I develop an econometric model that estimates the influence of state welfare benefits on the interstate migration decisions of poor, single mothers, whether that be moving from states with low benefits or to states with high benefits. This study builds upon previous literature concerning interstate migration by considering new methodological approaches and theoretical models. Ultimately, the evidence suggests that while the welfare benefits offered …

On The Orthodox Nature Of Heterodox Income Distribution Theory, Ross A. Nichols Jan 2013

On The Orthodox Nature Of Heterodox Income Distribution Theory, Ross A. Nichols

Gettysburg Economic Review

The goal of this paper is to show that orthodox and heterodox theories of personal income distribution developed in the mid-twentieth century are effectively identical, despite their claims to the contrary. While segmented labor market theory contends that neoclassical theories of personal income distribution, such as human capital theory, ignore the impact of social institutions on the labor market, human capital theory actually implicitly incorporates them. Social institutions are, therefore, just as important in the orthodox approach to personal income distribution. Yet, while this is the case, the heterodox perspective is valuable because of the stress it places on social …
