Fictive Learning In Choice Under Uncertainty: A Logistic Regression Model, Donald J. Brown, Oliver D. Bunn, Caterina Calsamiglia Mar 2013

Fictive Learning In Choice Under Uncertainty: A Logistic Regression Model, Donald J. Brown, Oliver D. Bunn, Caterina Calsamiglia

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper is an exposition of an experiment on revealed preferences, where we posite a novel discrete binary choice model. To estimate this model, we use general estimating equations or GEE. This is a methodology originating in biostatistics for estimating regression models with correlated data. In this paper, we focus on the motivation for our approach, the logic and intuition underlying our analysis and a summary of our findings. The missing technical details are in the working paper by Bunn, et al. (2013). The experimental data is available from the corresponding author: [email protected] . The recruiting poster and informed consent …

Exchange Rate Pass-Through To Domestic Prices In Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation, Abdulrasheed Zubair, George Okorie, Aliyu R. Sanusi Mar 2013

Exchange Rate Pass-Through To Domestic Prices In Nigeria: An Empirical Investigation, Abdulrasheed Zubair, George Okorie, Aliyu R. Sanusi

Economic and Financial Review

This paper uses the impulse response from an estimated structural autoregressive model of the inflation process to estimate the dynamic exchange rate pass-through to consumer prices for Nigeria, using quarterly data for the period 1986-20I0. The results suggest that the exchange rate pass-through is incomplete, low and fairly slow. On impact, for instance, the elasticity of inflation to exchange rate changes is about 0.02, and it takes about eight quarters to reach its full-impact of only 0.26. We argue that given the large share of imports in Nigeria's consumption basket, this surprisingly low pass-through indicates that importers practice the so-called …

Determinants Of Income Velocity Of Money In Nigeria, Peter N. Okafor, Tersoo S. Shitile, Danladi Osude, Chidi C. Ihediwa, Olamide H. Owolabi, Verse C. Shom, Emmanuel T. Agbadaola Mar 2013

Determinants Of Income Velocity Of Money In Nigeria, Peter N. Okafor, Tersoo S. Shitile, Danladi Osude, Chidi C. Ihediwa, Olamide H. Owolabi, Verse C. Shom, Emmanuel T. Agbadaola

Economic and Financial Review

In this paper, the authors set out to empirically investigate the determinants of income velocity of money in Nigeria, using quarterly time series from 1985:1 to 2012:4. The paper confirms a positive and statistically significant relationship between the growth of income and the velocity of money, which supports the quantity theory of money. Interest rate also has a positive and significant relationship with the income velocity of money. The financial sector development variable adopted, growth rate of stock market capitalization, has a negative relationship with the income velocity of money. The variance decomposition and impulse response results identified inflation rate …

A Panel Analysis Of Oil Price Dynamics, Fiscal Stance And Macroeconomic Effects: The Case Of Some Selected African Countries, Joseph A. Omojolaibi, Festus O. Egwaikhide Mar 2013

A Panel Analysis Of Oil Price Dynamics, Fiscal Stance And Macroeconomic Effects: The Case Of Some Selected African Countries, Joseph A. Omojolaibi, Festus O. Egwaikhide

Economic and Financial Review

The study makes use of quarterly data that spans the period from 1990:q1 to 2010:q4. A panel vector autoregressive (PVAR) technique was employed to examine the impact of oil price dynamics on the economic performance of five (5) oil exporting countries in Africa. The countries are: Algeria, Angola, Egypt, Libya and Nigeria. In order to achieve this, the study used the following variables: Oil price volatility, real gross domestic product (real GDP), fiscal deficit, gross investment and money supply shocks. The impulse response functions show that of all the macroeconomic variables considered, gross investment responds more to oil price volatility …

The Role Of Governance On Private Investment In Nigeria: A Preliminary Analysis, Kazeem B. Ajide Mar 2013

The Role Of Governance On Private Investment In Nigeria: A Preliminary Analysis, Kazeem B. Ajide

Economic and Financial Review

The paper sets out to investigate the role of governance on domestic private investment in Nigeria using Auto-Regressive Distributed Log (ARDL) Bounds Testing Approach to ascertain long-run association on an annual data covering the 1970 to 2010 period. Emanated from the estimated models are intriguing findings which showed clearly that difference exists between long and short run determinants of domestic private investment. In the former, degree of openness, previous value of inflation rates and governance indicators are the most important factors but political stability and voice and accountability indicators appear to dominate the governance indicators space as they are both …

Protecting The Whole: A Review, Phebian N. Bewaji Mar 2013

Protecting The Whole: A Review, Phebian N. Bewaji

Economic and Financial Review

The aftermath of the 2007 global financial crisis marked a turning point in financial system regulation, generating a "renewed" interest among global regulators in the use of macroprudential policy to promote financial system stability. In this regard, the article discussed some shortcomings of traditional regulation and promoted the need for a broader and systemic approach to financial system stability using both traditional (micro-prudential) and non-traditional (macroprudential) policies. The paper further discussed the elements of macroprudential policy and tools used to mitigate risks and vulnerabilities in the financial system. A summary of the article is presented in section II and comments …

Testing For Fictive Learning In Decision-Making Under Uncertainty, Oliver D. Bunn, Caterina Calsamiglia, Donald J. Brown Mar 2013

Testing For Fictive Learning In Decision-Making Under Uncertainty, Oliver D. Bunn, Caterina Calsamiglia, Donald J. Brown

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We conduct two experiments where subjects make a sequence of binary choices between risky and ambiguous binary lotteries. Risky lotteries are defined as lotteries where the relative frequencies of outcomes are known. Ambiguous lotteries are lotteries where the relative frequencies of outcomes are not known or may not exist. The trials in each experiment are divided into three phases: pre-treatment, treatment and post-treatment. The trials in the pre-treatment and post-treatment phases are the same. As such, the trials before and after the treatment phase are dependent, clustered matched-pairs, that we analyze with the alternating logistic regression (ALR) package in SAS. …

Unemployment And Economic Growth In Nigeria: An Empirical Re-Examination, Emmanuel Ating Onwioduokit Mar 2013

Unemployment And Economic Growth In Nigeria: An Empirical Re-Examination, Emmanuel Ating Onwioduokit

Bullion

This paper investigates the relationship between unemployment and economic growth in Nigeria through the implementation of the Okun’s law using the data from 1980 to 2013. The result indicates that the Okun’s law cannot be confirmed for Nigeria as the Okun’s co-efficient though properly signed was not significant at conventional level. As a result economic policies allied to demand management might not have the desired outcome of reducing unemployment in the country. Thus, the implementation of economic policy learning towards structural change and reforms in the labour market would be more appropriate to reduce unemployment in Nigeria.

Consolidated Public Safety Answering Point (Psap) Feasibility Study For Richland County Ohio, Daila Shimek, Eugene Kramer, Patrick Johnson, Charlie Post Mar 2013

Consolidated Public Safety Answering Point (Psap) Feasibility Study For Richland County Ohio, Daila Shimek, Eugene Kramer, Patrick Johnson, Charlie Post

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

This report provides an assessment of the feasibility of consolidation of two public safety answering points in Richland County, Ohio. The report describes the methodology used to assess the feasibility. The findings are that consolidation of dispatch services among the potential participating entities is feasible. Consolidation of services would reduce capital costs expended across the county for public safety emergency dispatching over the long term. Given the proposed investment equipment and staff, the level and quality of service provided by a consolidated dispatch center should exceed those currently being supplied.

How Would Non-Interest Banking Affect The Effectiveness Of Monetary Policy In Nigeria, Yusuf Adamu Mar 2013

How Would Non-Interest Banking Affect The Effectiveness Of Monetary Policy In Nigeria, Yusuf Adamu

Bullion

This article espouses the effectiveness of monetary policy in a dual economic framework (interest bearing/non-interest bearing). In other words it examines how the element non-interest banking when combined with interest bearing framework affect the effectiveness of monetary policy. The use of interest based instruments can effectively be combined with the identified non-interest interest instrument to conduct monetary policy. This article recommend that Nigeria should start thinking towards a policy that takes into account the monetary aggregate instruments as the main tool for executing monetary policy.

Core Resources Of Corporate Strategy And Performance-Oriented Bank Management Practice: A Lesson For Nigeria, Andrew O. Agbada

Bullion

In the past three decades, the Nigerian banking industry has suffered from a host of vices namely miss-management, financial misappropriation, administrative recklessness, etcetera, reflecting incompetence on all levels of management and those have had dire consequences in the economy. In an attempt to re-position the industry on the path of performance, different governments in the past took various corrective steps to no avail. Thus this study seeks to explore the Core Resources of Corporate Strategy and Performance-oriented Bank Management best practice with a view to creating sustainable best practices in bank management in Nigeria. The findings from the study are …

The Role Of Financial Literacy And Consumer Protection In Fostering Financial Inclusion, Dutse Umma Mar 2013

The Role Of Financial Literacy And Consumer Protection In Fostering Financial Inclusion, Dutse Umma

Bullion

The objective of this paper is to establish the link on how financial consumer protection efforts and financial literacy initiatives help bring people on board the formal financial system. Among the key mandate of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is the promotion of a sound financial system, while a stable financial system cannot be easily captured in a few words, the attributes that could be demonstrated in a system that is described as financially stable will include public confidence and trust in the institutional framework. Financial stability, therefore, serves to instill confidence in users of financial services. It encourages …

Viable Agent Banking And Mobile Payment System In Nigeria, Fatokun Dipo

Bullion

Agent banking and Mobile payments, especially in developing economies are rapidly evolving and having tremendous impact on the economies and lives of its citizenry. In addition to reducing costs, these new service offering channel help to encourage customers to use financial services more often, as locations are close by and in places where the customers are familiar with. In light of the afore-mentioned, the Central Bank of Nigeria noted the rapid growth of mobile telephony and the need to leverage existing business network infrastructure as a practical and well thought-out strategy for driving financial inclusion of the unbanked in Nigeria.

Palliative Care And The Health Care Crisis In The United States: A Candid Conversation With Dr. Diane Meier, Diane E. Meier Mar 2013

Palliative Care And The Health Care Crisis In The United States: A Candid Conversation With Dr. Diane Meier, Diane E. Meier

Center for Policy Research

This paper is a synthesis of the 2012 Lourie Lecture, framed as a series of questions and responses, and supported by images used in the lecture. I’m going to focus on the growth of this new field called palliative care and will make the connection that the crisis afflicting healthcare in the United States cannot be addressed without widespread scaling and implementation of palliative care across the system. My subject is not end-of-life care, but rather care during serious illness. A serious illness is something a person can live with for many years, such as emphysema, or end-stage renal disease …

Pathways To Tax Reform Revisited, Leonard E. Burman Mar 2013

Pathways To Tax Reform Revisited, Leonard E. Burman

Center for Policy Research

The U.S. income tax badly needs reform. It is complex, unfair, and inefficient. It doesn’t come close to raising enough revenue to finance government expenditures, and won’t any time in the foreseeable future unless it is revised. Raising tax rates could increase revenues, but it wouldn’t lessen the complexity and would magnify the unfairness and efficiency costs. Not surprisingly, proposals for reform abound. Income tax reform proposals would virtually all trim so-called tax expenditures, the 200 or so exclusions, deductions, and credits that are designed to provide subsidies for particular activities or groups. This would surely make the late Stanley …

Mountain Monitor-4th Quarter 2012, Kenan Fikri, Mark Muro Mar 2013

Mountain Monitor-4th Quarter 2012, Kenan Fikri, Mark Muro

Mountain Monitor Quarterly

Indicators of economic recovery depicted continued progress in the major metropolitan areas of the Mountain West in the fourth quarter of 2012. The region’s employment recovery gained momentum, and solid home-price increases in the region contributed to the nation‘s broader housing recovery. Such inroads bode well for further advances in 2013. At the same time, the region’s output recovery slowed and unemployment refused to budge.

Environmental Performance Of State-Owned And Privatized Eastern European Energy Utilities, Andrew G. Meyer, Grzegorz Pac Mar 2013

Environmental Performance Of State-Owned And Privatized Eastern European Energy Utilities, Andrew G. Meyer, Grzegorz Pac

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

Privatization in Eastern Europe has helped in the transition of the region's economies from planned to free market. However, the effects of privatization on the environment are relatively unknown and many firms remain under state ownership today. We compare the environmental performance of state-owned and privatized energy utility plants in Eastern Europe utilizing a novel panel data that includes reported sulfur dioxide emissions, energy input, and ownership status. We find that state-owned plants emit more sulfur dioxide than privately owned plants; this is environmentally significant as privatization is associated with a reduction in emissions of about 55%.

Economics Imperialism Under The Impact Of Psychology: The Case Of Behavioral Development Economics, John B. Davis Mar 2013

Economics Imperialism Under The Impact Of Psychology: The Case Of Behavioral Development Economics, John B. Davis

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

Economics imperialism is broadly explained as economics having an impact on other disciplines. But how should economics imperialism be understood when it is in some sense the product of other disciplines having an impact on economics? The paper examines psychology’s impact on economics in connection with the emergence of behavioral development economics, and then discusses the nature of behavioral development economics imperialism associated with development economists’ explanations of non-market dimensions of life in developing economies in behavioral economics terms. The paper argues that this new form of economics imperialism reflects economics’ selective appropriation from psychology of the Kahneman-Tversky heuristics and …

Research Brief: "How Are Iraq/Afghanistan-Era Veterans Faring In The Labor Market?", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University Mar 2013

Research Brief: "How Are Iraq/Afghanistan-Era Veterans Faring In The Labor Market?", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

In this study, researchers found significant differences in employment among recently returned veterans based on age, health, and service era. The Iraq/Afghanistan-era veterans, ages 18-24, were more likely to have higher earnings if employed, while older veterans, ages 37-64, had higher odds of unemployment. In practice, veterans may be experiencing an employment divide in which those who can find work command high wages, while others are not able to find work at all. In policy, policymakers may wish to revisit these issues by increasing the availability of programs and services for older veterans and those from previous eras who are …

(Wp 2013-02) Economists’ Odd Stand On The Positive-Normative Distinction: A Behavioral Economics View, John B. Davis Mar 2013

(Wp 2013-02) Economists’ Odd Stand On The Positive-Normative Distinction: A Behavioral Economics View, John B. Davis

Economics Working Papers

This chapter examines economists’ indefensible attachment to the positive-normative distinction, and suggests a behavioral economics explanation of their behavior on the subject. It reviews the origins of the distinction in Hume’s guillotine and logical positivism, and shows how they form the basis for Robbins’ understanding of value neutrality. It connects philosophers’ rejection of logical positivism to their rejection of the positive-normative distinction, explains and modifies Putnam’s view of fact-value entanglement, and identifies four main ethical value judgments that contemporary economists employ. The behavioral explanation of economists’ denial of these value judgments emphasizes loss aversion and economists’ social identity as economists.

Effects Of Ad-Valorem Taxes On Location Decision Under Free Entry Cournot Oligopoly, Yeung-Nan Shieh Mar 2013

Effects Of Ad-Valorem Taxes On Location Decision Under Free Entry Cournot Oligopoly, Yeung-Nan Shieh

Faculty Publications

This paper examines the impact of the ad-valorem commodity tax as a policy device on the location decision of undifferentiated oligopolistic firms with free entry. It shows that: (1) When the distance between the plant location and the output market is held constant, the optimum location for the oligopolistic firm would be independent of the ad-valorem tax if the production function is homothetic, and (2) when the distance between the plant location and the output market is a decision variable, the optimum location for the oligopolistic firm will move closer to the output market if the demand function is linear …

Preventing Money Laundering: Key To A Better World, Brenda Martinez Mar 2013

Preventing Money Laundering: Key To A Better World, Brenda Martinez

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Money laundering has developed over recent decades and has evolved into a worldwide phenomenon. Virtually every country in the world is affected by money laundering. The methodology of money laundering exists in every fraud scheme. It involves the concealed transfer of assets by masking them in the ordinary normalcy of financial transactions. Money laundering is a criminal enterprise, with the emphasis on the business aspect. The attraction of perpetrators into the money laundering business is profit with little perceived risks. This paper discusses money laundering, how to define it, its origins, the cycle, its effects, prevention methods, and what the …

Decomposing The Changes Of The Divisia Price Index: Application To Inflation In The Philippines, Tomoki Fujii Mar 2013

Decomposing The Changes Of The Divisia Price Index: Application To Inflation In The Philippines, Tomoki Fujii

Research Collection School Of Economics

We decompose the logarithmic change in the Divisia price index into the pure price, substitution, and preference effects, although the latter two effects are hard to distinguish in practice. This decomposition allows us to identify the incidence and contributing factors of inflation. In the Philippines, we find that the preference effect is much smaller than the pure price effect in all provinces. We also find that rich deciles have experienced a higher inflation than poor deciles between 1988 and 2006. However, the gap in the standards of living has actually widened because poor deciles lagged behind in consumption growth.

Robust Virtual Implementation: Toward A Reinterpretation Of The Wilson Doctrine, Georgy Artemov, Takashi Kunimoto, Roberto Serrano Mar 2013

Robust Virtual Implementation: Toward A Reinterpretation Of The Wilson Doctrine, Georgy Artemov, Takashi Kunimoto, Roberto Serrano

Research Collection School Of Economics

We study a mechanism design problem where arbitrary restrictions are placed on the sets of first-order beliefs of agents. Calling these restrictions Δ, we use Δ-rationalizability (Battigalli and Siniscalchi, 2003, [5]) as our solution concept, and require that a mechanism virtually implement a socially desirable outcome. We obtain two necessary conditions, Δ-incentive compatibility and Δ-measurability and show that the latter is satisfied as long as a particular zero-measure set of first-order beliefs is ruled out. In environments allowing small transfers of utility among agents, these two conditions are also sufficient.

A Note On Separability And Intra-Household Resource Allocation In A Collective Household Model, Tomoki Fujii, Ryuichiro Ishikawa Mar 2013

A Note On Separability And Intra-Household Resource Allocation In A Collective Household Model, Tomoki Fujii, Ryuichiro Ishikawa

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper shows that it is possible to track the changes in the distribution of power within a couple by focusing on the changes in the pattern of private consumption when the consumption decisions are efficient and private consumption is separable from public consumption in individual preferences. We first show that the separability of private consumption from public consumption at the individual level carries over to the household level. Hence, changes in public consumption only matters through a change in the residual budget available for private consumption. When the consumption decisions within the household is efficient, private consumption decisions can …

Bias In The Mean Reversion Estimator In Continuous-Time Gaussian And Lévy Processes, Yong Bao, Aman Ullah, Yun Wang, Jun Yu Mar 2013

Bias In The Mean Reversion Estimator In Continuous-Time Gaussian And Lévy Processes, Yong Bao, Aman Ullah, Yun Wang, Jun Yu

Research Collection School Of Economics

Continuous-time Levy processes have become increasingly popular in the asset pricing literature and estimation of the mean reversion parameter has attracted attention recently. This paper develops the approximate nite-sample bias of the ordinary least squares or quasi maximum likelihood estimator of the mean reversion parameter in continuous-time Levy processes. Simulations show that in general the approximate bias works well in capturing the true bias of the mean reversion estimator under difference scenarios. However, when the time span is small and the mean reversion parameter is approaching its lower bound, we find it more difficult to approximate well the nite-sample bias.

Optimal City Hierarchy: A Dynamic Programming Approach To Central Place Theory, Wen-Tai Hsu, Thomas J. Holmes, Frank Morgan Mar 2013

Optimal City Hierarchy: A Dynamic Programming Approach To Central Place Theory, Wen-Tai Hsu, Thomas J. Holmes, Frank Morgan

Research Collection School Of Economics

Central place theory is a key building block of economic geography and an empirically plausible description of city systems. This paper provides a rationale for central place theory via a dynamic programming formulation of the social planner's problem of city hierarchy. We show that there must be one and only one immediate smaller city between two neighboring larger-sized cities in any optimal solution. If the fixed cost of setting up a city is a power function, then the immediate smaller city will be located in the middle, confirming the locational pattern suggested by Christaller [4] . We also show that …
