Weight-Related Behavior Among Adolescents: The Role Of Peer Effects, Mir M. Ali, Aliaksandr Amialchuk, Frank W. Heiland
Publications and Research
Purpose To investigate whether social interactions in friendship networks influence the following weight-related behaviors of adolescents: exercising regularly, playing an active sport, hours of TV/Video viewing, sleeping six or fewer hours, eating breakfast on weekdays, frequency of eating at fast food restaurants, eating five servings of fruits/vegetables daily, and consuming calorie-dense snacks.
Method Data from a nationally representative sample of adolescents are used to examine the association between peer and individual weight-related behaviors. Evidence from multivariate regression analysis controlling for an extensive list of individual- and family-level factors as well as school-level unobserved heterogeneity is obtained. Results We find a …

What's Wrong With Economics? It Ignores The Pogo Principle: "We Have Met The Enemy And He Is Us", Jerry Evenesky
Economics - All Scholarship
The piece begins with the proposition that the economic perspective on human activity must reflect the fact that human beings transact in a world defined for the actors by social norms. An analysis of the crisis of 2008 is offered as a demonstration of the value of adopting such a broader perspective. Part two offers a historical model based on Adam Smith’s Moral Philosophy of such a broader analysis. The piece closes with the case that the history of ideas offers alternative perspectives on the questions we explore in economics today and thus can serve as a valuable resource for …

The Lack Of Persistence Of Employee Contributions To Their 401(K) Plans May Lead To Insufficient Retirement Savings, Leslie A. Muller, John A. Turner
The Lack Of Persistence Of Employee Contributions To Their 401(K) Plans May Lead To Insufficient Retirement Savings, Leslie A. Muller, John A. Turner
Upjohn Institute Policy Papers
Many workers save for retirement through 401(k) plans. This study addresses the concern that low account balances of older workers may indicate that these vehicles are not sufficient to insure adequate retirement savings. In particular, the study shows that while they are accumulating these plans, workers are not persistent in contributing, and a weak stock market exacerbates the problem.
Inertia does not seem to hold for 401(k) saving behavior. Furthermore, the investment strategy of dollar cost averaging does not seem to hold, either. Using four biennial waves of data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) covering a six-year …

Political Economy Of Budget, Ishrat Husain Dr.
Political Economy Of Budget, Ishrat Husain Dr.
Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles
The anticipation about national budget creates a lot of hype, particularly among the news channels, which have swollen in numbers and work in a highly competitive environment. However, by the time the actual budget is announced most of the information becomes already available in the public domain through trickles and dribs. The budget announcement, itself, comes as an anti-climax as it does not contain much that is not already known. Commentators and observers make superficial points about the realism of the budget targets and numbers. What is really important is to understand the dynamics and the context — particularly, the …
Value, Cooperatives, And Class Justice, David Kristjanson-Gural
Value, Cooperatives, And Class Justice, David Kristjanson-Gural
Faculty Journal Articles
In this article I argue that elimination of exploitation at the firm level is necessary to eliminate exploitation, but is not sufficient, in and of itself, to support class justice. I distinguish exploitation as one of several aspects in the more inclusive category of class justice developed by George DeMartino. I then demonstrate that when the formation and distribution of value at the more complex level of Marx’s analysis in volume 3 of Capital is considered, workers may collectively appropriate surplus value but nonetheless be subject to an unfair redistribution of labor time. I use the example of the Mondrago …

Budget 2011–2012: All Eyes On The Centre, But Provinces Matter Too, Ishrat Husain Dr.
Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles
The budget announced yesterday did not contain any surprises and was, as usual, an accounting statement of the revenues and expenditures of the federal government.
In so far as the content of economic policies and institutional changes was concerned, it made four departures from the past.
First, the federal excise duties are going to be phased out in the next three years and a beginning has been made in this year’s budget. Second, the exemptions and concessions in the tax regime available for a wide variety of activities without any coherence are being abolished, minimising some of the distortions and …

Nafta And The U.S.-Mexican Trucking Dispute, Robert J. Carbaugh
Nafta And The U.S.-Mexican Trucking Dispute, Robert J. Carbaugh
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business
Although the charter of the North American Free Trade Agreement established a schedule that would have opened the border states of the United States to competition from Mexican trucking companies in 1995, and all of the United States to this competition in 2000, the full implementation of these provisions has been delayed due to concerns about the safety of Mexican trucks and drivers. This delay has resulted in much frustration for Mexico, which, in 2009 implemented retaliatory tariffs on products imported from the United States. In March, 2011 the two countries unveiled a deal to resolve this dispute which could …
Earnings Volatility In America: Evidence From Matched Cps, James P. Ziliak, Bradley Hardy, Christopher Bollinger
Earnings Volatility In America: Evidence From Matched Cps, James P. Ziliak, Bradley Hardy, Christopher Bollinger
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
We offer new evidence on earnings volatility of men and women in the United States over the past four decades by using matched data from the March Current Population Survey. We construct a measure of total volatility that encompasses both permanent and transitory instability, and that admits employment transitions and losses from self employment. We also present a detailed decomposition of earnings volatility to account for changing shares in employment probabilities, conditional variances of continuous workers, and conditional mean variances from labor-force entry and exit. Our results show that earnings volatility among men increased by 15 percent from the early …
Do Arbitrageurs Amplify Economic Shocks?, Harrison Hong, Jeffrey D. Kubik, Tal Fishman
Do Arbitrageurs Amplify Economic Shocks?, Harrison Hong, Jeffrey D. Kubik, Tal Fishman
Economics - All Scholarship
We test the hypothesis that arbitrageurs amplify economic shocks in equity markets. The ability of speculators to hold short positions depends on asset values: shorts are often reduced following good news about a stock. Therefore, the prices of highly shorted stocks are excessively sensitive to shocks compared to stocks with little short interest. We confirm this hypothesis using several empirical strategies including two quasi-experiments. In particular, we establish that the price of highly shorted stocks overshoots after good earnings news due to short covering compared to other stocks.

A Tale Of Two Cities? The Heterogeneous Impact Of Medicaid Managed Care In Kentucky, James Marton, Aaron Yelowitz, Jeffery C. Talbert
A Tale Of Two Cities? The Heterogeneous Impact Of Medicaid Managed Care In Kentucky, James Marton, Aaron Yelowitz, Jeffery C. Talbert
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
Does managed care produce lower health care utilization and costs through better aligned financial incentives and alternative delivery methods (the “pure” HMO effect) or by attracting more healthy enrollees (enrollee selection)? The purpose of this paper is to shed new light on this fundamental question using a quasi-experimental approach that exploits the timing and county specific implementation of Medicaid managed care plans in two distinct sub-sets of Kentucky counties in the late 1990s. We find large differences in the relative success of each region in reducing utilization that are likely driven by important differences in plan design. Asthmatic children enrolled …

Stealing History: How Does Provenance Affect The Price Of Antiquities?, Katherine Kiel, Katherine Tedesco
Stealing History: How Does Provenance Affect The Price Of Antiquities?, Katherine Kiel, Katherine Tedesco
Economics Department Working Papers
In 1982, the United States passed legislation that partially implemented the UNESCO Treaty, the Cultural Property Implementation Act. Despite the fact that the United States signed onto this treaty, it was common knowledge in the antiquities world that the enforcement of these laws has been lax, and the illegal sale of artifacts has continued. In December 2005, the Italian government took the Curator of Antiquities at the Getty Museum Marion True and Robert Hecht (a well-known antiquities dealer) to trial for conspiracy to buy and sell looted artifacts. This paper tests whether a good provenance increases the price of an …

IPED Technical Reports
The Institute for Policy and Economic Development (IPED) at the University of Texas at El Paso was contracted by the City of El Paso’s Office of the City Manager to conduct a household survey exploring citizen attitudes and perceptions about City services and general quality of life issues. The present survey is the fourth in a series of similar surveys conducted in 2004, 2006, and 2008. These surveys, together, explore how El Paso citizens’ attitudes and perceptions have changed over time regarding their City and the services its government provides.
Stock Market Reaction To Selected Macroeconomic Variables In The Nigerian Economy, Abraham Williams Terfa
Stock Market Reaction To Selected Macroeconomic Variables In The Nigerian Economy, Abraham Williams Terfa
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This study examines the relationship between the stock market and selected macroeconomic variables in Nigeria. The all share index was used as a proxy for the stock market while inflation, interest and exchange rates were the macroeconomic variables selected. Employing error correction model, it was found that a significant negative short run relationship exists between the stock market and the minimum rediscounting rate (MRR) implying that, a decrease in the MRR, would improve the performance of the Nigerian stock market. It was also found that exchange rate stability in the long run, improves the performance of the stock market. Though …
Effects Of Global Climate Change On Nigerian Agriculture: An Empirical Analysis, Apata T. .G
Effects Of Global Climate Change On Nigerian Agriculture: An Empirical Analysis, Apata T. .G
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This paper presents an empirical analysis of the effects of global warming on Nigerian agriculture and estimation of the determinants of adaptation to climate change. Data used for this study are from both secondary and primary sources. The set of secondary sources of data helped to examine the coverage of the three scenarios (1971-1980; 1981-1990 and 1991-2000). The primary data set consists of 900 respondents’ but only 850 cases were useful. This study analyzed determinants of farm-level climate adaptation measures using a Multinomial choice and stochastic-simulation model to investigate the effects of rapid climatic change on grain production and the …
A Kalman Filter Approach To Fisher Effect: Evidence From Nigeria, Omorogbe J. Asemota, Dahiru A. Bala
A Kalman Filter Approach To Fisher Effect: Evidence From Nigeria, Omorogbe J. Asemota, Dahiru A. Bala
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This paper investigates evidence of a Fisher effect in Nigeria by employing quarterly CPI inflation and Nominal interest rates data. For a more robust result we conducted integration and cointegration tests in order to examine time-series properties of the variables. Using Co-integration and Kalman filter methodologies, the study did not find evidence of a full Fisher effect from 1961:1-2009:4. This result indicates that nominal interest rates do not respond one-for-one to changes in inflation rates in the long run despite the presence of positive relationship among the variables. Our study recommends the adoption of potent policies aimed at checking inflation …
User Patterns Of Key Performance Indicators Among Non-Profits In New York City And Westchester County, Gregory Holtz Phd
User Patterns Of Key Performance Indicators Among Non-Profits In New York City And Westchester County, Gregory Holtz Phd
Wilson Center for Social Entrepreneurship
After a brief description of the study participants, the four major questions which guide the research are explored:
- What percent of the non-profits in the study use KPI’s and what are the different purposes served by the non-profit’s sector adoption of KPI’s?
- What are the various uses of KPI’S by non-profits?
- What are the pressures that come from funders to use KPI’s?
- Why do some non-profits not use Key Performance Indicators?
The context inside of which these questions were posed is one that has changed rapidly over the last several years. For many years non-profit organizations concentrated their considerable energies …
Building A World-Class System In Ireland’S Financial Crisis, Ellen Hazelkorn
Building A World-Class System In Ireland’S Financial Crisis, Ellen Hazelkorn
Articles
Irish higher education faces particular difficulties given the severity of its economic crisis. Like other countries, it is engaged in significant system restructuring coupled with managed policy direction. Where Ireland does differ is in its emphasis on a 'whole of country strategy' and commitment that teaching and research go hand-in-hand. This paper looks at the fortunes and mis-fortunes of Irish higher education.

An Analysis Of The Role Of Self-Employment In The Economic Development Of The Rural Northeastern United States, Saima Bashir, Tesfa Gebremedhin, Jerald J. Fletcher
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
Generating employment and alleviating poverty are the biggest challenges for regional economic growth in rural areas of the Northeastern United States. Despite the revival of the economy in much of the nation‟s heartland, rural areas are still suffering from high poverty and unemployment rates. Self-employment, a measure of entrepreneurship, indicates an opportunity for rural communities to improve quality of life and accelerate regional economic development. Taking into consideration the problem of unemployment in rural communities, there is a need to focus on generating self-employment opportunities at micro level to enhance economic growth and reduce the per capita income „gap‟ between …

Dr Pepper Snapple Group: Fighting To Prosper In A Highly Competitive Market, Joseph S. Harrison
Robins Case Network
Since its separation from the food giant Cadbury Schweppes, Dr Pepper Snapple Group has experienced successes such as the turnaround of the Snapple brand and growth in demand for some of its popular brands. However, the company is still a distant third in an incredibly competitive industry. How can the company achieve continued success in the shadows of Coca Cola and PepsiCo?
Connected Substitutes And Invertibility Of Demand, Steven T. Berry, Amit Gandhi, Philip A. Haile
Connected Substitutes And Invertibility Of Demand, Steven T. Berry, Amit Gandhi, Philip A. Haile
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We consider the invertibility of a nonparametric nonseparable demand system. Invertibility of demand is important in several contexts, including identification of demand, estimation of demand, testing of revealed preference, and economic theory requiring uniqueness of market clearing prices. We introduce the notion of “connected substitutes” and show that this structure is sufficient for invertibility. The connected substitutes conditions require weak substitution between all goods and sufficient strict substitution to necessitate treating them in a single demand system. These conditions are satisfied in many standard models, have transparent economic interpretation, and allow us to show invertibility without functional form restrictions, smoothness …

Mean-Dispersion Preferences And Constant Absolute Uncertainty Aversion, Simon Grant, Ben Polak
Mean-Dispersion Preferences And Constant Absolute Uncertainty Aversion, Simon Grant, Ben Polak
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We axiomatize, in an Anscombe-Aumann framework, the class of preferences that admit a representation of the form V ( f ) = µ – ρ( d ), where mu is the mean utility of the act f with respect to a given probability, d is the vector of state-by-state utility deviations from the mean, and ρ( d ) is a measure of (aversion to) dispersion that corresponds to an uncertainty premium. The key feature of these mean-dispersion preferences is that they exhibit constant absolute uncertainty aversion. This class includes many well-known models of preferences from the literature on ambiguity. We …

“Connected Substitutes And Invertibility Of Demand, Steven T. Berry, Amit Gandhi, Philip A. Haile
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We consider the invertibility (injectivity) of a nonparametric nonseparable demand system. Invertibility of demand is important in several contexts, including identification of demand, estimation of demand, testing of revealed preference, and economic theory exploiting existence of an inverse demand function or (in an exchange economy) uniqueness of Walrasian equilibrium prices. We introduce the notion of “connected substitutes” and show that this structure is sufficient for invertibility. The connected substitutes conditions require weak substitution between all goods and sufficient strict substitution to necessitate treating them in a single demand system. The connected substitutes conditions have transparent economic interpretation, are easily checked, …
Fiscal Federalism And Nigeria's Development: Comparative Perspectives From Canadian Fiscal Federalism, Olumide Victor Ekanade
Fiscal Federalism And Nigeria's Development: Comparative Perspectives From Canadian Fiscal Federalism, Olumide Victor Ekanade
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
This paper evaluates the historical dynamics that have shaped the development of fiscal federalism in Nigeria and Canada over the years. It contends that certain contradictions have inhibited the efficient and equitable allocation of tax powers and expenditure responsibilities in Nigeria. These include Nigeria's defective federal structure, military rule, Presidential federalism, politicized sharing principles, and the parochial political culture. These absurdities now threaten the stability of the Nigerian federation. The paper submits that the Canadian Federation offers a viable option for renewal with principles such as autonomy of sub national units, the predominance of the civic culture, scientific equalization, and …
A Viking Age Political Economy From Soil Core Tephrochronology, Kathryn Anne Catlin
A Viking Age Political Economy From Soil Core Tephrochronology, Kathryn Anne Catlin
Graduate Masters Theses
Saga accounts describe Viking Age Iceland as an egalitarian society of independent household farms. By the medieval period, the stateless, agriculturally marginal society had become highly stratified in exploitative landlord-tenant relationships. Classical economists place the origin of differential wealth in unequal access to resources that are unevenly distributed across the landscape. This irregularity is manifested archaeologically as spatial variations in buried soil horizons, which are addressed through thousands of soil cores recorded across Langholt in support of the Skagafjörður Archaeological Settlement Survey. Soil accumulation rates, a proxy for land quality, are derived from tephrochronology and correlated with archaeological and historical …
