The Credibility Problem In Politics: Theory And Evidence From State-Level Abortion Legislation, Francisco Rodriguez, Eduardo Zambrano Apr 2009

The Credibility Problem In Politics: Theory And Evidence From State-Level Abortion Legislation, Francisco Rodriguez, Eduardo Zambrano

Economics

This paper proposes a simple mechanism for evaluating the relevance of credibility problems in politics. If parties are capable of making credible policy promises, we will not expect them to systematically adopt platforms that entail large probabilities of losing an election. This is because the adoption of very extreme platforms has the effect of shifting expected policies away from their ideal points. Parties who lack the capacity of making credible commitments, in turn, are unable to affect voters' expectations of the policies they will adopt upon reaching office. We test these predictions on a panel of US states by studying …

Pakistan-Us Economic Ties, Ishrat Husain Dr. Apr 2009

Pakistan-Us Economic Ties, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

The Obama administration has recently completed a review of Washington’s Pakistan strategy. The US Congress is considering a bill that will triple aid appropriations to Pakistan for non-military economic development and another bill to set up Reconstruction Opportunity Zones in Fata. Is US aid as envisaged in the Kerry-Lugar bill an appropriate tool for Pakistan’s long term economic development? Is its disbursement through the existing channels the most preferred mode of assisting Pakistan in its endeavour to resume its journey to sustainable and equitable growth? Before we get overwhelmed by this act of generosity the issue needs to be explored. …

Political Affiliation And Perceptions Of Trade: Examining Survey Data From The State Of Georgia, Roger White, Richard Clark Apr 2009

Political Affiliation And Perceptions Of Trade: Examining Survey Data From The State Of Georgia, Roger White, Richard Clark

Economics

We examine the influences of political party affiliation and self-identification as politically conservative, centrist, or liberal on individuals’ trade preferences. Majority support for trade is reported for all political classifications, with Republicans found to be 13.7%–15.1% more likely than Democrats and independents to support trade. Similarly, conservatives are 14.8%–21% more likely to support trade than are centrists and liberals; however, distinctions exist between ‘‘very conservative’’ and ‘‘somewhat conservative’’ cohorts.

East-West Migration And The Immigrant-Trade Link: Evidence From Italy, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse Apr 2009

East-West Migration And The Immigrant-Trade Link: Evidence From Italy, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse

Economics

Employing data for Italy and 68 trade partners that span the period 1996 2001, we examine the role of immigrants in influencing Italian exports to and imports from their respective home countries. Particular emphasis is placed on variation in the immigrant-trade relationship across Former Soviet Republic (FSR) and Post-Communist (PCOM) country classifications relative to immigrants from non-FSR and non-PCOM countries. The findings provide information that may assist in policy formulation and lead to more enlightened public and political debates of the issue. Immigrants are generally found to exert pro-trade influences, with proportional immigrant effects being somewhat …

Search And Offshoring In The Presence Of 'Animal Spirits', Devashish Mitra, Priya Ranjan Apr 2009

Search And Offshoring In The Presence Of 'Animal Spirits', Devashish Mitra, Priya Ranjan

Economics - All Scholarship

In this paper, we introduce two sources of unemployment in a two-factor general equilibrium model: search frictions and fairness considerations. We find that a binding fair-wage constraint increases the unskilled unemployment rate and can at the same time lead to a higher unemployment rate for skilled workers, as compared to an equilibrium where fairness considerations are absent or non-binding. Starting from a constrained equilibrium, an increase in the fairness parameter leads to increases in both skilled and unskilled unemployment. The wage of unskilled workers increases but the wage of skilled workers decreases. Next we allow for offshoring of unskilled jobs …

Offshoring And Unemployment: The Role Of Search Frictions And Labor Mobility, Devashish Mitra, Priya Ranjan Apr 2009

Offshoring And Unemployment: The Role Of Search Frictions And Labor Mobility, Devashish Mitra, Priya Ranjan

Economics - All Scholarship

In a two-sector, general-equilibrium model with labor-market search frictions, we find that wage increases and sectoral unemployment decreases upon offshoring in the presence of perfect intersectoral labor mobility. If, as a result, labor moves to the sector with the lower (or equal) vacancy costs, there is an unambiguous decrease in economywide unemployment. With imperfect intersectoral labor mobility, unemployment in the offshoring sector can rise, with an unambiguous unemployment reduction in the non-offshoring sector. Imperfect labor mobility can result in a mixed equilibrium in which only some firms in the industry offshore, with unemployment in this sector rising.

Bailouts, Buy-Ins, And Ballyhoo, Robert C. Hockett Apr 2009

Bailouts, Buy-Ins, And Ballyhoo, Robert C. Hockett

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

The bailout strategy now being pursued by Treasury under the recently authorized Troubled Asset Relief Plan, if “strategy” it can be called, remains obscure and erratic at best. All the while markets remain jittery and credit remains tight, as the underlying source of our present financial jitters—continued decline in the housing market and still mounting foreclosures—goes unaddressed. This piece proposes an interesting and novel approach to solving the financial problem. If it works out, it would eventually minimize the cost to the government.

Vertical Restraints And Horizontal Control, Robert Innes, Stephen F. Hamilton Apr 2009

Vertical Restraints And Horizontal Control, Robert Innes, Stephen F. Hamilton

Economics

This article considers vertical restraints in a setting in which duopoly retailers each sell more than one manufactured good. Vertical restraints by a dominant manufacturer enable the firm to acquire horizontal control over a competitively supplied retail good. The equilibrium contracts produce symptoms that are consistent with a variety of observed retail practices, including slotting fees paid to retailers by competitive suppliers, loss leadership, and predatory accommodation with below-cost manufacturer pricing for the dominant brand(s). Applications are developed for supermarket retailing, where the manufacturer of a national brand seeks to control the retail pricing of a supermarket's private label, and …

The Legalities And Realities Of Emancipation Policies In The Netherlands And Their Associated Welfare State Typologies, Leigh Ellis Apr 2009

The Legalities And Realities Of Emancipation Policies In The Netherlands And Their Associated Welfare State Typologies, Leigh Ellis

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Independent Study Project (ISP) investigated how Dutch emancipation policies have affected female labor market participation in the Netherlands. The ISP focused specifically on The Working Hours Modification Act, The Childcare Act, and The Work and Care Act. The ISP explored both the legalities and realities of the emancipation policies. Additionally, Esping-Andersen’s welfare state typologies were incorporated and each emancipation policy was classified according to the welfare state typology that it best reflected. The legalities of the legislation were researched using literature and the findings of other comparative studies done on female labor market participation in the Netherlands. A qualitative …

The Cost Of Progress: Failed Development And Community Response On Pulau Serangan, Julia Nakad Apr 2009

The Cost Of Progress: Failed Development And Community Response On Pulau Serangan, Julia Nakad

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Introduction - extract

No place on Bali illustrates the promise and heartbreak of development more clearly than the failed development project on Serangan Island, the location of a halted (if not completely aborted) development project in the 1990s that drastically changed the landscapes and livelihoods on the island in a relatively short span of time. Prior to the development project, most Serangan people made a living from fishing in the ocean surrounding the island, as well as from extracting coral and engaging in the turtle trade. These same people were promised jobs in the resorts that were to be built …

La Crisis Financiera De 1982-1983 En Chile: Orígenes, Intervención, Efectos Y Implicancias Para El Modelo Neoliberal, Luke Shoemaker

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This project is an analysis of the financial crisis in Chile between 1982 and 1983. I will begin with a summary of the crisis with respect to three variables: the origin of the crisis, the government’s intervention to confront the crisis, and the effects of the crisis. Afterwards I will discuss the implications that the financial crisis has for the neoliberal model. There are two hypotheses for this discussion. One hypothesis is that the neoliberal model caused the crisis. The alternative hypothesis is that the crisis was caused by errors in the application of the neoliberal model and other external …

Macroeconomic Determinants Of Worker Remittances To Latin American And The Caribbean Countries, Sathiavanee Veeramoothoo Apr 2009

Macroeconomic Determinants Of Worker Remittances To Latin American And The Caribbean Countries, Sathiavanee Veeramoothoo

Honors Projects in Economics

A regression analysis was performed to identify which macroeconomic factors influence the magnitude to worker remittances to over thirty Latin American and Caribbean countries. Age dependency ratio, land area, net migration, labor force, population and unemployment were found to be significant predictors of remittances. A time series exponential model was developed to forecast the level of remittances for the next ten years. The results suggest that remittances to Latin American and Caribbean countries will reach USD 190,810 million in 2018.

Based on the above findings, this paper will help scholars understand better what drives worker remittances in Latin American and …

A Cost-Benefit Analysis Of The Transition From Gaap To Ifrs In The United States, Kenneth Smith

Honors Projects in Economics

This research intends to determine the costs and benefits of the transition from Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in the United States. This study targets the costs and benefits of the transition in three areas of accounting: Academia, Corporate and Public. The transition could potentially have large implications on investment in the US and around the world, and therefore, this study aims to see if it is beneficial for the US to adopt IFRS. To ascertain the costs and benefits of the transition, this research used an online survey to obtain knowledge and opinions …

Supplying Clean Water To Jaipur: A Study Of Two Current Government Projects, Jenna Stearns Apr 2009

Supplying Clean Water To Jaipur: A Study Of Two Current Government Projects, Jenna Stearns

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Water is arguably the most important natural resource for human development, economic growth, and sustainability of the environment. Access to clean water is the most basic human need for life and health, and without it people cannot survive. Water plays a crucial role in determining where communities settle and how big they will be able to grow. Besides being the “elixir of life,” it is also essential for socioeconomic development, agriculture, industry, power generation, and other daily activities. Due to the growing population and the shortage of water around the world, it is said that future wars will be fought …

Japanese Players In Major League Baseball: An Econometric Analysis Of Labor Discrimination, Kyle Audet Apr 2009

Japanese Players In Major League Baseball: An Econometric Analysis Of Labor Discrimination, Kyle Audet

Honors Projects in Economics

In recent years, Major League Baseball (MLB) teams have increasingly drawn talent from the international market. This study employs econometric techniques to test the various labor discrimination issues facing Japanese players playing in America’s MLB. There have been remarkably few studies focusing on Japanese players in MLB. Data from the 1995 to 2007 season has been analyzed. High degrees of discriminatory pay scales are found for Japanese pitchers. The findings suggest that Japanese batters do not face such pay discrimination. Positional discrimination has also been the subject of investigation. Japanese players are found to be disproportionally pitchers. Suggestions for future …

The Effect Of Obesity On State Health Care Expenditures: An Empirical Analysis, Kristen Collins Apr 2009

The Effect Of Obesity On State Health Care Expenditures: An Empirical Analysis, Kristen Collins

Honors Projects in Economics

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of obesity rates on per capita state health care expenditures. A two-stage least square regression model is used. In the first stage of the estimation, factors influencing obesity rates are determined. The determinants of obesity rates are outlined throughout the research process. In the second stage, the impact of obesity rates on per capita health expenditures across states is evaluated. The empirical results indicate that obesity rates do indeed have a direct effect on state health care expenditures. After reviewing the project’s results, various solutions are proposed as possible methods …

How Do Young Workers Prepare For Retirement?, Jenna Greco

Honors Projects in Economics

The Millennial Generation is defined as those ages 15-30 in 2009 and is comprised of 80 million individuals (Elswick, 2004). This study explores how a segment of this generation, young workers between the ages of 18-30, is currently saving for retirement given the unprecedented economic challenges they face. These challenges include rising everyday expenses, record amounts of student loan and credit card debt, as well as how they will prepare for retirement given the uncertainty surrounding Social Security. The purpose of this study is to evaluate young workers current financial situation, retirement plans, and retirement expectations. Using data collected from …

The Economics Of Deal Risk: Allocating Risk Through Mac Clauses In Business Combination Agreements, Robert T. Miller Apr 2009

The Economics Of Deal Risk: Allocating Risk Through Mac Clauses In Business Combination Agreements, Robert T. Miller

Working Paper Series

In any large corporate acquisition, there is a delay between the time the parties enter into a merger agreement (the signing) and the time the merger is effected and the purchase price paid (the closing). During this period, the business of one of the parties may deteriorate. When this happens to a target company in a cash deal, or to either party in a stock-for-stock deal, the counterparty may no longer want to consummate the transaction. The primary contractual protection parties have in such situations is the merger agreement’s “material adverse change” (MAC) clause. Such clauses are heavily negotiated and …

Gresham's Law In The 21St Century, Joshua Finnell Apr 2009

Gresham's Law In The 21St Century, Joshua Finnell

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Abstract

Research indicates that most people today satisfy their information needs through the Internet. As we move deeper into the information age, librarians must embrace the role of inculcating information literacy skills lest Gresham’s Law of economics becomes a reality in our information economy. This article discusses the probabilistic nature of the Internet against the backdrop of Gresham’s Law.
