The Impact Of Selected Corporate Governance Variables In Mitigating Earnings Management In The Philippines, Mc Reynald S. Banderlipe Ii

Given the increasing importance of corporate governance in the Philippines, this study attempts to explain the role of selected governance variables related to a company’s board of directors in mitigating earnings management in the country. Using the financial statements of publicly listed companies and a modified measurement model, the findings revealed that the holding of multiple directorial positions by the independent directors, and the managerial ownership of the board are significant enough to limit the incentives for earnings management. Moreover, firm size and return on assets were identified to have explanatory significance among the controlling factors.

This study discusses an innovation to management teaching called Learning-Activity-Based Experience Model (LAB-E Model). The perspective is that the entire learning process in a course will be experienced through sets of activities designed by the faculty. These sets or clusters of problems and activities are unique to the contents and objectives of the course as well as to the varying needs and capabilities of the students. Through management activities created and designed by the faculty, learning takes place. This innovative teaching model incorporates other common teaching methodologies which include small group presentation, facilitated discussion of cases, and lecture-discussion approach.

While the current economic climate is challenging, it provides an opportunity to assess critical workforce and talent issues facing the manufacturing community. In March 2009, Dr. Joel Elvery of Cleveland State University’s Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs released the Employment and Wage Trends of Manufacturing Occupations in the Cleveland-Elyria PMSA analysis. The analysis identified occupations that appear to be “pain-points” for employers - or open positions that are hard to fill and thus, in high demand.

The objective of this study is to continue monitoring the economic performance of Northeast Ohio’s (NEO) metropolitan areas over time and in comparison to other metropolitan areas across the United States, particularly leading metropolitan areas and other large metro areas located in the Midwest. The study monitors economic conditions prior to the current recession. This fourth study of dashboard indicators describes the findings using the framework that was developed in previous studies. It uses the same four measures of economic growth and nine dashboard indicators and their underlying variables for 136 metropolitan areas with population between 300,000 and 3.5 million. …

This research empirically examines whether a country's anti dumping policy can distort export of another country to third markets. This research tries to explore about trade deflection of Indonesia's export on Synthetic Staple Fibre Polyester (PSF) HS 550320 to non-European Union as the result of European Union's (EU) anti dumping policy on Indonesia. This research uses panel data model (fixed effects) and 20 countries (non-European Union) of Indonesia's PSF export during ten years (1996-2005). This research is aimed to identify disparity of per capita income in of the Kasaba border area (Kalimantan-Sarawak-Sabah) in West Kalimantan and East Kalimantan over the period 2001-2007. It was done by observing the coefficient variation that shows whether the sigma convergence happened or not. The other aims are to examine the determinant of beta convergence using OLS regressions with panel data. The results show that sigma convergence was not happened in West Kalimantan and East Kalimantan over the period 2001-2007. This indicated that the disparity of per capita income was happened. The study computes the carbon dioxide emissions of the Philippines for the period of 2000 to 2006 and applies a production perspective input-output analysis to identify the key sectors whose value-added growth were responsible for the increase in emissions of the country and those that exhibited increased sectoral emissions from overall income growth. Power generation turned out to be the primary sector while cement manufacture, wholesale/retail trade, mining, road and water transport, and private services were revealed as the secondary sectors, jointly accounting for 0.66% increase in the country’s emissions from a 1% growth in their valueadded and experiencing 0.75% …

Perceived Organizational Effectiveness Of Labor Unions In The Banking, Hotel, And Manufacturing Industries, Divina M. Edralin

To determine the extent of influence of the organization’s context and structure factors on the perceived effectiveness of labor unions in the banking, hotel, and manufacturing industries in the National Capital Region, 88 local unions consisting of 772 rank-and-file and supervisory union members from 82 firms were covered. It is evident from the results that the level of union effectiveness as perceived by the members is a function of two major organizational factors, namely, context and structure. Moreover, there are significant differences in the average level of effectiveness rating of unions per industry.

This study maps out the innovation process in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) that can fundamentally affect business performance. The development of the conceptual framework can be used to encourage and enhance successful innovation management for SMEs. Overall, effective innovation is based on managing this process as a whole and on building up capacity and competency at each stage in the innovation. The framework put forth in this study is being proposed to be used as template for the development of a management development program for SMEs’ owner-managers and as a practical tool for diagnosing SMEs’ support systems.

“The learning Filipino firm” can be classified into three types, namely the reactive firm, which is a reluctant learner; the adaptive firm, which is an eager learner; and the generative firm, which is a dynamic learner. This typology is based on the hypothesis that a firm’s learning style and its innovative capability is influenced by its organizational design. Among the key dimensions that must be considered are as follows: (a) organizational strategy, (b) organizational structure, and (c) organizational culture. These dimensions are closely intertwined, and, therefore, collectively influence a firm’s ability to constantly renew itself.

This dissertation focuses on the empirical generalizations related to retailer promotions. Two essays are developed addressing the generalizations. The first essay addresses the contradiction in the calculations of primary and secondary demand effects. A mathematical proof is developed to show that under Nested Logit modeling, competitors' gain assumption is violated. An alternative explanation is provided to calculate the primary and secondary demand effects. The second essay focuses on the empirical generalization of the neighborhood price effect. Many researchers argue that the number of people who participate in civic and political life has declined since the 1970's; however, others argue that new methods of participation are not being considered. This paper describes the completion of a "comprehensive study of regionalism" that was conducted by a joint team of economists and economic development specialists for the Economic Development Administration (EDA). The project consisted of two main activities: an examination of the factors associated with economic development success and the creation of a practical interactive tool for EDA project assessment and comparison. Findings from surveys, interviews, and project case studies are discussed in terms of their support for a positive relationship between successful economic development efforts and factors such as leadership and private investment. This article charts the evolving regulation of cooperation and coordination between international transport firms, in particular those operating within the liner shipping and international air transport sectors. There has been a long history of exemption of these sectors from the rules and regulations of antitrust or competition law. In the past three decades, regulatory reforms and privatization have, however, subjected these sectors to competitive forces that have transformed these industries. This paper considers how a regional currency basket and the associated divergence indicators could be used in official surveillance. Recently, proponents of Asian currency baskets have referred to the role the ECU played in constructing exchange rate divergence indicators in Europe as evidence of the intrinsic usefulness of currency baskets for exchange rate monitoring. We show in this paper a number of problems with the use of regional currency-basket based divergence indicators. First, at a technical level, such indicators involve tracking regional exchange rates against a moving currency basket and can obscure underlying movements in bilateral exchange rates. The method of generalized estimating equations (GEEs) provides consistent estimates of the regression parameters in a marginal regression model for longitudinal data, even when the working correlation model is misspecified (Liang and Zeger, 1986). However, the efficiency of a GEE estimate can be seriously affected by the choice of the working correlation model. This study addresses this problem by proposing a hybrid method that combines multiple GEEs based on different working correlation models, using the empirical likelihood method (Qin and Lawless, 1994). Analyses show that this hybrid method is more efficient than a GEE using a misspecified working correlation model. …

Accounting for observed fluctuations in aggregate employment, consumption, and real wage using the optimality conditions of a representative household requires preferences that are incompatible with economic priors. In order to reconcile theory with data, we construct a model with heterogeneous agents whose decisions are difficult to aggregate because of incomplete capital markets and the indivisible nature of labor supply. If we were to explain the model-generated aggregate time series using decisions of a stand-in household, such a household must have a nonconcave or unstable utility as is often found with the aggregate US data.

Partly in response to increased testing and accountability, states and districts have been raising the minimum school entry age, but existing studies show mixed results regarding the effects of entry age. These studies may be severely biased because they violate the monotonicity assumption needed for LATE. We propose an instrument not subject to this bias and show no effect on the educational attainment of children born in the fourth quarter of moving from a December 31 to an earlier cutoff. We then estimate a structural model of optimal entry age that reconciles the different IV estimates including ours. We find …
