This study is an empirical evaluation of the dynamic effect of intermittent television ad placements on the sales of a consumer product using three classes of distributed lag models. The study is also geared to analytically determine the duration of advertising effects and the dependability of the firm’s pulsing type of advertising strategy. Empirical results support the soundness of the company’s strategy. Maximum duration of advertising effect is estimated at six months, which is about the largest number of consecutive months the product was not seen on TV during the sample period.

Understanding behavioral intention, a critical aspect of market planning, is not simple, as many factors are involved in the formation of behavioral intention. This study endeavored to better understand the relationship between attitude, subjective norm and behavioral intention in an empirical study of gym membership. Using a model based on the Theory of Reasoned Action, the study examined the influence of attitude and subjective norm on behavioral intention to join a gym. An analysis of the findings suggested that to maintain current gym members, a gym operator should capitalize on attitudes favoring gym membership.

The Patent System And The Quest For Affordable Medicines, Christopher E. Cruz

This study examined how the patent system in the Philippines – as embodied by the Intellectual Property Code – affects the public’s access to affordable medicines. It discussed the issue of patent protection vs. public health in the context of the Philippine pharmaceutical industry. The study discovered that Filipino-owned pharmaceutical companies find it difficult to compete with multinational corporations, and that this factor has raised the prices of medicines in the Philippines. The study then proposed solutions to the problem, which include the promotion of off-patent drugs and the amendment of the Intellectual Property Code.

This study reviewed the subject of the urban allocation of land, and mainly drew from two major works: Vernon (1960) and Vreeker, de Groot, and Verhoef (2007). The two major works were analyzed along with other relevant issues such as urban multifunctional land use, clustering of firms, and empirical implications. Recommendations regarding the urban allocation of land were then presented.

Generational similarities and differences among working adults in the United States, United Kingdom, Iceland, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, and Colombia were investigated using the Rokeach Value Survey (RVS). Hypotheses were supported for cross-cultural generational differences for 23 of 36 values; there were also generational similarities. Sixteen values were ranked similarly for the 40+ year-old generation; thirteen values were ranked similarly for the 18 to 29 year-old generation; and 13 values were ranked similarly for the 30 to 39 year olds. As the result of global financial liberalization there is a tendency for increasing number of portfolio investment which in turn dominates the domestic financial market. This study aims to elaborate the effect of short- term portfolio investment flows to the exchange rate. Using the method of Vector Auto Regressive (VAR), this study employs quarterly data from 1997 to 2007. The result shows that both real and nominal exchange rates are affected by the short-term portfolio investment flows dominantly. We study whether more asymmetrically timely earnings constrain payouts to shareholders in the presence of bad news. Our goal is to provide evidence on the ex post contracting benefits of accounting conservatism. We distinguish between cash flow asymmetric timeliness and accrual asymmetric timeliness to examine how each relates to asymmetric sensitivity of shareholder payouts. We find that only the asymmetric timeliness of cash flows is significantly related to the asymmetric sensitivity of shareholder payouts. Other measures of conservatism (earnings skewness and accumulated nonoperating accruals) are also not significantly related to the sensitivity of shareholder payouts given bad news. These results …

We define a nonparametric prewhitening method for estimating conditional quantiles based on local linear quantile regression. We characterize the bias, variance and asymptotic normality of the proposed estimator. Under weak conditions our estimator can achieve bias reduction and have the same variance as the local linear quantile estimators. A small set of Monte Carlo simulations is carried out to illustrate the performance of our estimators. An application to US gross domestic product data demonstrates the usefulness of our methodology.

This paper examines how volatility responds to return news in the context of stochastic volatility (SV) using a nonparametric method. The correlation structure in the classical leverage SV model is generalized based on a linear spline. In the new model the correlation between the return innovation and volatility innovation is dependent on the type of news arrived to the market. Theoretical properties of the proposed model are examined. A simulation-based maximum likelihood method is developed to estimate the new model. When current decisions affect welfare in the far-distant future, as with climate change, the use of a declining pure rate of time preference (PRTP) provides potentially important modeling flexibility. The difficulty of analyzing models with non-constant PRTP limits their application. We describe and provide software (available online) to implement an algorithm to numerically obtain a Markov perfect equilibrium for an optimal control problem with non-constant PRTP. We apply this software to a simplified version of the numerical climate change model used in the Stern Review. For our calibration, the policy recommendations are less sensitive to the PRTP than widely believed. …

Determinants Of Income Growth In Metropolitan And Nonmetropolitan Labor Markets, George W. Hammond, Eric C. Thompson

This article analyzes determinants of growth across labor markets in the United States, using a production function approach based on four inputs: labor, manufacturing investment, human capital investment, and public capital investment. We find little role for public capital investment in growth, but that manufacturing investment spurred growth in nonmetropolitan areas, in contrast to metropolitan areas. We also find that human capital investment mattered more for metropolitan areas than for nonmetropolitan areas. Further, the presence of more colleges and universities, more household amenities, and lower tax rates are all found to have encouraged human capital accumulation in U.S. labor markets.

"In all human societies, individuals differ in social status depending upon their age and personal ability (Sahlins, 1958; Service, 1971). In laboratory-based small group studies, status hierarchies emerge spontaneously (Bass, 1954; Campbell et al., 2002; Kalma, 1991). Even among “egalitarian” foragers, who are characterized by widespread resource sharing (Kaplan & Gurven, 2005; Winterhalder, 1986) and some degree of status-leveling (Cashdan, 1980), certain individuals consume more resources, get the best pick of mates, and take a more central role in group decision-making (Boehm, 1999; Trigger, 1985; Wiessner, 1996). This paper seeks to express the relevance of the knowledge economy to economic growth and development and to demonstrate the construction of a knowledge economy index for the fifty states, with a focus on South Carolina. The effort involves a survey of economic literature, reports and indexes related to the knowledge economy. Once significant knowledge economy indicators are identified, regression analysis is performed to select the most promising indicators for use as variables in the index. JET marks a change in the way the State of Michigan provides services to increase the economic opportunities of its low-income residents. We model interhousehold transfers between nomadic livestock herders as the state-dependent consequence of individuals' strategic interdependence resulting from the existence of multiple, opposing externalities. A public good security externality among individuals sharing a social (e.g., ethnic) identity in a potentially hostile environment creates incentives to band together. Self-interested interhousehold wealth transfers from wealthier herders to poorer ones may emerge endogenously within a limited wealth space as a means to motivate accompanying migration by the recipient. The distributional reach and size of the transfer are limited, however, by a resource appropriation externality related to the use of common property grazing lands. …

Many researchers study the subject of collegiate cheating by focusing on demographic characteristics of cheaters at schools of varying sizes. Other researchers examine whether collegiate honor codes can abate rampant cheating. A third group studies whether perceptions of what students believe to be cheating behaviors affects actual cheating. This paper incorporates previous research and develops a model of academic cheating based on three sets of incentives - moral, social and economic – and how they affect self-reported cheating behaviors at liberal arts colleges. What are the health impacts of retirement? As talk of raising retirement ages in pensions and social security schemes continues around the world, it is important to know both the costs and benefits or the individual as well as the governments' budgets. In this paper we use the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) dataset to address this question in a multi-country setting. We use country-specific early and full retirement ages as an instrument for retirement behavior in a regression discontinuity design approach.
