High School Peer Networks And College Success: Lessons From Texas, Jason Fletcher, Marta Tienda Sep 2008

High School Peer Networks And College Success: Lessons From Texas, Jason Fletcher, Marta Tienda

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

This paper uses administrative data from the University of Texas-Austin to examine whether high school peer networks at college entry influence college achievement, measured by grade point average (GPA) and persistence. For each freshman cohort from 1993 through 2003 we calculate the number and ethnic makeup of college freshmen from each Texas high school, which we use as a proxy for freshmen “peer network.” Empirical specifications include high school fixed effects to control for unobservable differences across schools that influence both college enrollment behavior and academic performance. Using an IV/fixed effects strategy that exploits the introduction and expansion of the …

Distribution Of Wealth And Interdependent Preferences, Andrew Grodner, Thomas J. Kniesner Sep 2008

Distribution Of Wealth And Interdependent Preferences, Andrew Grodner, Thomas J. Kniesner

Economics - All Scholarship

We examine the socially optimal wealth distribution in a two-person two-good model with heterogeneous workers and asymmetric social interactions where only one (social) individual derives positive or negative utility from the leisure of the other (non-social) individual. We show that the interdependence can effectively counter-act the need to transfer wealth to low-wage individuals and may require them to be poorer by all objective measures. We demonstrate that in the presence of social interactions it can be socially desirable to keep substantial wealth inequality.

The Incidence Of Tobacco Taxation: Evidence From Geographic Micro-Level Data, Andrew Hanson, Ryan S. Sullivan Sep 2008

The Incidence Of Tobacco Taxation: Evidence From Geographic Micro-Level Data, Andrew Hanson, Ryan S. Sullivan

Economics - All Scholarship

This paper uses a recent increase in the state of Wisconsin's tobacco tax as a natural experiment to measure the economic incidence of tobacco taxation. We estimate the economic incidence of tobacco taxation using micro level data on cigarette prices collected from retail locations in Wisconsin and states that share its border. We find that Wisconsin's $1.00 increase in tobacco tax was over-shifted to consumers; they pay the entire amount of the tax as well as a premium of between $0.08 and $0.17 per pack of cigarettes. We use geo-coded data to test if the incidence of the tobacco tax …

Employment-Based Health Insurance And The Minimum Wage, Laura Bucila Sep 2008

Employment-Based Health Insurance And The Minimum Wage, Laura Bucila

Economics Department Working Papers

This paper provides new estimates of the effects of increased federal and state minimum wages on the employment-based health insurance coverage of low-wage workers. I use March Current Population Surveys collected from IPUMS, for 1988 to 2005. Previous studies have found no significant evidence that increased minimum wages reduce fringe benefit receipt (Beeson Royalty 2000, Simon and Kaestner 2003). In contrast to these studies, I use a difference-in-difference approach and I define treatment groups as being individuals in the lowest 1 and 2 deciles of the hourly wage distribution. Little evidence was found for the federal minimum wage increase of …

Crime Networks With Bargaining And Build Frictions, Bryan Engelhardt Sep 2008

Crime Networks With Bargaining And Build Frictions, Bryan Engelhardt

Economics Department Working Papers

How does the timing, targets and types of anti-crime policies affect a network when criminal retailers search sequentially for wholesalers and crime opportunities? Given the illicit nature of crime, I analyze a non-competitive market where players bargain over the surplus. In such a market, some anti-crime policies distort revenue sharing, reduce matching frictions and increase market activity or crime. As an application, the model provides a new perspective on why the U.S. cocaine market saw rising consumption after the introduction of the “War on Drugs.”

Home Buying In New Orleans Before And After Katrina Patterns By Space, Race, And Income, Dan Immergluck, Yun Sang Lee Sep 2008

Home Buying In New Orleans Before And After Katrina Patterns By Space, Race, And Income, Dan Immergluck, Yun Sang Lee

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

Natural disasters can conceivably have significant impacts on the “neighborhood sorting” of different racial or economic groups across intrametropolitan space. Using Home Mortgage Disclosure Act data we examine mortgage-financed homebuying activity within the New Orleans MSA before and after Hurricane Katrina. We find that, while the total amount of homebuying in the 7-parish New Orleans MSA was relatively unchanged between 2004 and 2006, homebuying in the city declined significantly, and declined most in places experiencing severe storm damage. We also find that after Hurricane Katrina, the proportion of homebuyers in the region and the city who were African-American or low-income …

Inference For Parameters Defined By Moment Inequalities: A Recommended Moment Selection Procedure, Donald W.K. Andrews, Panle Jai Barwick Sep 2008

Inference For Parameters Defined By Moment Inequalities: A Recommended Moment Selection Procedure, Donald W.K. Andrews, Panle Jai Barwick

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper is concerned with tests and confidence intervals for partially-identified parameters that are defined by moment inequalities and equalities. In the literature, different test statistics, critical value methods, and implementation methods (i.e., asymptotic distribution versus the bootstrap) have been proposed. In this paper, we compare a wide variety of these methods. We provide a recommended test statistic, moment selection critical value method, and implementation method. In addition, we provide a data-dependent procedure for choosing the key moment selection tuning parameter and a data-dependent size-correction factor.

Financial Control Of A Competitive Economy Without Randomness, Ioannis Karatzas, Martin Shubik, William D. Sudderth Sep 2008

Financial Control Of A Competitive Economy Without Randomness, Ioannis Karatzas, Martin Shubik, William D. Sudderth

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The monetary and fiscal control of a simple economy without outside randomness is studied here from the micro-economic basis of a strategic market game. The government’s bureaucracy is treated as a public good that provides services at a cost. A conventional public good is also considered.

The Value Of Fiat Money With An Outside Bank: An Experimental Game, Juergen Huber, Martin Shubik, Shyam Sunder Sep 2008

The Value Of Fiat Money With An Outside Bank: An Experimental Game, Juergen Huber, Martin Shubik, Shyam Sunder

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Why people accept intrinsically worthless fiat money in exchange for real goods and services has been a longstanding question. There are many competing sufficient explanations that may confound each other in practice but can be individually tested in isolation experimentally. In this paper we examine a sufficient explanation of the value of fiat money through the existence of a debt instrument which allows consumption to be moved earlier in time. We present experimental evidence that the theoretical predictions about the behavior of such economies work reasonably well in a laboratory setting. The import of this finding for the theory of …
