Does Free Trade Cause Hunger? Hidden Implications Of The Ftaa, Jonathan B. Wight Jan 2001

Does Free Trade Cause Hunger? Hidden Implications Of The Ftaa, Jonathan B. Wight

Economics Faculty Publications

Voluntary free trade has the potential, slowly and gradually over time, to create "general opulence" because it allows workers to acquire greater competency and specialization: in a word, workers become more productive. The creation of a Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) would expand market areas and thereby potentially contribute to raising future living standards of workers. This paper seeks to analyze the theoretical basis for trade, provide an economic overview of FTAA countries, and analyze the winners and losers from trade.

Is The Federal Reserve Bank Stock Market Bubble-Neutral?, A. (Tassos) G. Malliaris, Marc D. Hayford Jan 2001

Is The Federal Reserve Bank Stock Market Bubble-Neutral?, A. (Tassos) G. Malliaris, Marc D. Hayford

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper argues that the Fed was not stock market bubble-neutral during the last several years. This nonneutrality implies two options: first, the Fed has used monetary policies to prevent the building of the stock market bubble or, second, the Fed has contributed to its development and subsequent deflation. We supply representative quotes from the FOMC transcripts to establish that the Fed has paid significant attention to the valuation of the stock market. These quotes confirm that the stock market’s valuation was an important variable in the Fed’s decision-making and its conduct of monetary policy. We also conduct econometric modeling, …

On The Grounds Of Globalization: A Topography For Feminist Political Engagement, Cindi Katz Jan 2001

On The Grounds Of Globalization: A Topography For Feminist Political Engagement, Cindi Katz

Publications and Research

Globalization is nothing new. Global trade has been going on for millennia—though what constitutes the "globe" has expanded dramatically in that time. And trade is nothing if not cultural exchange, the narrow distinctions between the economic and the cultural having long been rendered obsolete. Moreover, our forbears, like us, were great "miscegenators." If here I gloss the racialized and gendered violence often associated with miscegenation, I do so strategically to note that all recourse to purity, indigeneity, or aboriginality—however useful strategically—should be subject to at least as much scrutiny as the easy romance with hybridity (see Mitchell 1997). Globalization has …

Export Performance Of Malaysian Frozen Shrimp Industry Against Selected Asean Countries, Chai Fong Lim Jan 2001

Export Performance Of Malaysian Frozen Shrimp Industry Against Selected Asean Countries, Chai Fong Lim

Student Works (2000-2009)

The recent liberalisation of trade in A SEAN has promoted more regional trade in shrimp among the ASEAN countries as well as trade with countries outside the region. An important issue arising from the liberalisation of trade concerns the increased pressure of competition and direct rivalry among Malaysia and the other ASEAN countries for the export of shrimps in the international markets. This paper analyses the export performance and competitiveness of Malaysian frozen shrimp against three other ASEAN countries, that is Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand, in the Japanese market. Four different methods, namely constant market-share analysis, shift-share analysis, revealed …

Reading Changes In Family Support Through Regional Development In China, Ge Lin Jan 2001

Reading Changes In Family Support Through Regional Development In China, Ge Lin

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

This article examines the degree to which the traditional family support system would be reshaped by the modernization and industrialization from a geo-developmental perspective. In particular, we examine the impact of rapid social changes and economic developments on family support for older parents in contemporary urban China to assess trends that might lead to a different path from the western style of old-age support purported by modernization theory. Based on the 1992 Survey on China’s Support Systems for the Elderly, the study divides the sample from three levels of economic development, which in turn, are used as proxies for developmental …

Dispositions For Lexicographic Preferences Of Evironmental Goods: Integrating Economics, Psychology, And Ethics, Randall S. Rosenberger, George L. Peterson, Andrea Clarke, Thomas C. Brown

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

This paper combines the psychometric methods of paired comparisons and environmental disposition measurement to explain seemingly lexicographic behavior in choice experiments. A paired comparison experiment is developed that measures economic values using a choice set composed of public goods, private goods, and sums of money. The method provides a detailed map of each respondent’s stated preferences, among the choice set elements. Two treatments are used that differ only on the range of the dollar magnitudes – Treatment A ranges from$10 to $700. Treatment B ranges from $10 to $9,000. In either treatment, a proportion of the respondents potentially exhibit lexicographic …

The Impact Of Domestic Political Events On An Emerging Stock Market : The Case Of Indonesia, Herry Suhardjo Jan 2001

The Impact Of Domestic Political Events On An Emerging Stock Market : The Case Of Indonesia, Herry Suhardjo

Student Works (2000-2009)

This paper provides information regarding the effects of domestic political events on the Jakarta Stock Exchange. An event methodology is employed, and the results suggest that the market as a whole and the overall industries do not seem to respond to all political events. The results also indicate that there is no difference between the means of abnormal returns before and after the event. In general, the market as a whole and the overall industries behave in a similar manner. The change in signs (positive-negative) of abnormal returns suggests that the political condition in Indonesia was still unstable. The results …

The Financing Of Innovation: Learning And Stopping, Dirk Bergemann, Ulrich Hege Jan 2001

The Financing Of Innovation: Learning And Stopping, Dirk Bergemann, Ulrich Hege

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper considers the financing of a research project under uncertainty about the time of completion and the probability of eventual success. We distinguish between two financing modes, namely relationship financing, where the allocation decision of the entrepreneur is observable, and arm’s length financing, where it is unobservable. We find that equilibrium funding stops altogether too early relative to the efficient stopping time in both financing modes. The rate at which funding is released becomes tighter over time under relationship financing, and looser under arm’s length financing. The trade-off in the choice of financing modes is between lack of commitment …

A Computational Analysis Of The Core Of A Trading Economy With Three Competitive Equilibria And A Finite Number Of Traders, Alok Kumar, Martin Shubik Jan 2001

A Computational Analysis Of The Core Of A Trading Economy With Three Competitive Equilibria And A Finite Number Of Traders, Alok Kumar, Martin Shubik

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In this paper we examine the structure of the core of a trading economy with three competitive equilibria as the number of traders ( N ) is varied. We also examine the sensitivity of the multiplicity of equilibria and of the core to variations in individual initial endowments. Computational results show that the core first splits into two pieces at N = 5 and then splits a second time into three pieces at N = 12. Both of these splits occur not at a point but as a contiguous gap. As N is increased further, the core shrinks by N …

Expected Utility Theory Without The Completeness Axiom, Juan Dubra, Fabio Maccheroni, Efe A. Ok Jan 2001

Expected Utility Theory Without The Completeness Axiom, Juan Dubra, Fabio Maccheroni, Efe A. Ok

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We study axiomatically the problem of obtaining an expected utility representation for a potentially incomplete preference relation over lotteries by means of a set of von Neumann-Morgenstern utility functions. It is shown that, when the prize space is a compact metric space, a preference relation admits such a multi-utility representation provided that it satisfies the standard axioms of expected utility theory. Moreover, the representing set of utilities is unique in a well-defined sense.

Weighted Minimum Mean-Square Distance From Independence Estimation, Donald J. Brown, Marten H. Wegkamp Jan 2001

Weighted Minimum Mean-Square Distance From Independence Estimation, Donald J. Brown, Marten H. Wegkamp

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In this paper we introduce a family of semi-parametric estimators, suggested by Manski’s minimum mean-square distance from independence estimator. We establish the strong consistency, asymptotic normality and consistency of bootstrap estimates of the sampling distribution and the asymptotic variance of these estimators.

The uncertainty about future success gradually diminishes with the arrival of addtional funding. The entrepreneur controls the funds and can divert them. We distinguish between relationship financing, meaning that the entrepreneur’s allocation of the funds is observable, and arm’s length financing, where it is unobservable. We find that equilibrium funding stops altogether too early relative to the efficient stopping time in both financing modes. We characterize the optimal contracts and equilibrium funding decisions. The financial constraints will typically …

Electoral Rules And The Emergence Of New Issue Dimensions, Estelle Cantillon Jan 2001

Electoral Rules And The Emergence Of New Issue Dimensions, Estelle Cantillon

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Different electoral rules provide different incentives for parties competing for votes to adopt emerging issues. As a result, new societal issues will be integrated at different speeds into the political arena, and ultimately, into policy. In order to study this question formally, I propose an extension of the standard spatial model of political competition that allows for issue adoption and more generally, issue prioritizing at the platform level. The paper then compares the outcome of party competition under proportional and plurality rule. Entry is allowed and incumbent parties act as Stackelberg leaders vis-à-vis potential entrants. The analysis highlights the interaction …

Local Polynomial Whittle Estimation, Donald W.K. Andrews, Yixiao Sun Jan 2001

Local Polynomial Whittle Estimation, Donald W.K. Andrews, Yixiao Sun

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The local Whittle (or Gaussian semiparametric) estimator of long range dependence, proposed by Künsch (1987) and analyzed by Robinson (1995a), has a relatively slow rate of convergence and a finite sample bias that can be large. In this paper, we generalize the local Whittle estimator to circumvent those problems. Instead of approximating the short-run component of the spectrum, φ(λ), by a constant in a shrinking neighborhood of frequency zero, we approximate its logarithm by a polynomial. This leads to a “local polynomial Whittle” (LPW) estimator. Following the work of Robinson (1995a), we establish the asymptotic bias, variance, mean-squared error (MSE), …

Altruistically Inclined?: The Behavioral Sciences, Evolutionary Theory, And The Origins Of Reciprocity, Alexander J. Field Jan 2001

Altruistically Inclined?: The Behavioral Sciences, Evolutionary Theory, And The Origins Of Reciprocity, Alexander J. Field

Faculty Book Gallery

Altruistically Inclined? examines the implications of recent research in the natural sciences for two important social scientific approaches to individual behavior: the economic/rational choice approach and the sociological/anthropological. It considers jointly two controversial and related ideas: the operation of group selection within early human evolutionary processes and the likelihood of modularity—domain-specific adaptations in our cognitive mechanisms and behavioral predispositions.

Experimental research shows that people will often cooperate in one-shot prisoner's dilemma (PD) games and reject positive offers in ultimatum games, contradicting commonly accepted notions of rationality. Upon first appearance, predispositions to behave in this fashion could not have been favored …

Rationality, Decision Theories, And Thresholds: Implications For Environmental Valuation, Randall S. Rosenberger Jan 2001

Rationality, Decision Theories, And Thresholds: Implications For Environmental Valuation, Randall S. Rosenberger

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

The purpose of this paper is to promote a discussion about different theories of rationality and models of individual decision making, as well as the role of thresholds in the valuation of environmental management and policy issues. The intent of this paper is to provide some conceptual distinctions between models and theories in order to develop experiments that empirically test one or more of the issues raised herein.
