The most recent data available on the structure of the Nigerian ^ economy are those for year 2000, which reflect the current structure and the main features of the economy. (see Annex 1) They indicate that the agricultural sector accounted for 41 .5o/o of the nation's GDP, while manufacturing contributed 5.95%, finance and insurance, 9.59%, crude petroleum, 10.42%, wholesale and retail trade, 11.58%, and government services 9.35%. Financing And Promoting Small-Scale Industries. Concept, Issues And Prospects., C. M. Anyanwu

Bullion

The importance of small-scale industries in promoting industrialization and economic growth has been recognized globally. This paper discusses the concepts and issues that are associated with the financing and promoting of small scale industries. Nigeria is blessed with vast natural resources, including oil, gas and solid minerals, already confirmed to exist in commercial quantities. Small-scale industries development can be used for achieving the objectives of the poverty alleviation programme of the Government, given that they are highly labour intensive. Nigeria is blessed with vast natural resources, including oil, gas and solid minerals, already confirmed to exist in commercial quantities. She …

The Progress Of Computing, William D. Nordhaus Sep 2001

The Progress Of Computing, William D. Nordhaus

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The present study analyzes computer performance over the last century and a half. Three results stand out. First, there has been a phenomenal increase in computer power over the twentieth century. Performance in constant dollars or in terms of labor units has improved since 1900 by a factor in the order of 1 trillion to 5 trillion, which represent compound growth rates of over 30 percent per year for a century. Second, there were relatively small improvements in efficiency (perhaps a factor of ten) in the century before World War II. Around World War II, however, there was a substantial …

What Accounts For The Variation In Retirement Wealth Among U.S. Households?, B. Douglas Bernheim, Jonathan Skinner, Steven Weinberg Sep 2001

What Accounts For The Variation In Retirement Wealth Among U.S. Households?, B. Douglas Bernheim, Jonathan Skinner, Steven Weinberg

Dartmouth Scholarship

Even among households with similar socioeconomic characteristics, saving and wealth vary considerably. Life-cycle models attribute this variation to differences in time preference rates, risk tolerance, exposure to uncertainty, relative tastes for work and leisure at advanced ages, and income replacement rates. These factors have testable implications concerning the relation between accumulated wealth and the shape of the consumption profile. Using the Panel Study of Income Dynamics and the Consumer Expenditure Survey, we find little support for these implications. The data are instead consistent with "rule of thumb," "mental accounting," or hyperbolic discounting theories of wealth accumulation.

The Role Of Development Finance Institutions (Dfis) In The Financing Of Small-Scale Industries (Ssis)., O. E. Essien Sep 2001

The Role Of Development Finance Institutions (Dfis) In The Financing Of Small-Scale Industries (Ssis)., O. E. Essien

Bullion

The post-independence Nigerian government adopted the import-substitution large-scale industrialisation strategy to accelerate the country's industrial development. Industrial output as well as industry's contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) declined in the face of the strong national aspiration for the restructuring of the economy and reduction of the dependence on petroleum. Small and medium scale industries have since become the focus of national industrial policy. ln order to put our discussion into proper perspective, we need to know what we mean by SSls in the Nigerian context. The following are the current official definitions of industrial enterprises adopted by the …

An Exploration Into Individual Development Accounts As An Anti-Poverty Strategy, Timothy G. Reutebuch Sep 2001

An Exploration Into Individual Development Accounts As An Anti-Poverty Strategy, Timothy G. Reutebuch

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

A non-random, cross-sectional sampling procedure was utilized in this study to determine what factors are related to households choosing to utilize Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) as a means to escape poverty. Surveys from 111 households were collected from September 1997, to April 1999, in seven Ohio counties to elucidate the relationship between the level of assets in working poor households and selected household demographic variables, and the decision on whether or not to actually participate in an IDA program. Findings revealed that households 1) with more than one wage earner and 2) with higher levels of education are more likely …

Bank Lending Behaviour And Output Growth: An Empirical Analysis With Implication For Monetary Policy Formulation In Nigeria, Joseph O. Nnanna Sep 2001

Bank Lending Behaviour And Output Growth: An Empirical Analysis With Implication For Monetary Policy Formulation In Nigeria, Joseph O. Nnanna

Economic and Financial Review

Preliminary findings from the empirical analysis show that the banking sector has not supported real sector output growth in its lending policy. The combined effects of risk aversion and infrastructural problem in the real sector represent serious constraints on credit flow to the private sector and the sectors declining marginal product of capital. Overall, while the banking sector has indeed, succeeded in deposit mobilization, it has nevertheless, not done a good job in its intermediation functions. The analysis further reveals the presence of policy distortions in the system, and its negative influence on banks' lending behavior. The need to address …

Analysis Of Formal Lending To The Agricultural Sector In Nigeria: 1978 - 98, Dayo Phillip Sep 2001

Analysis Of Formal Lending To The Agricultural Sector In Nigeria: 1978 - 98, Dayo Phillip

Economic and Financial Review

Towards the attainment of the goals of the Nigerian agricultural sector, relevant policies have been formulated and implemented during the post-independence years. The agricultural credit policy, among several others, was aimed at ensuring adequate funds for the agricultural sector. The objective of this paper is to estimate the relationship between formal lending to agriculture and some assumed determinants of agricultural credit lending during the 1978- 98 sample period. Lending by financial institutions to the agricultural sector was viewed for the pi11pose of model development in this study as the "supply of credit" to agriculture. Thus, the sets of determinants of …

Developments In The Insurance Industry In Nigeria In 1999, Central Bank Of Nigeria Cbn Sep 2001

Developments In The Insurance Industry In Nigeria In 1999, Central Bank Of Nigeria Cbn

Economic and Financial Review

This report indicates that the size of Nigeria s insurance industry shrank in 1999, according to a survey conducted by CBN. The development was sequel to the exit of some insurance companies that could not fulfil the recapitalisation requirement by the National Insurance Commission (NA/COM). However, paid-up capital in the industry increased by 7.1 per cent in 1999, owing to the additional equity capital injected into the joint-venture insurance companies. Aggregate income and expenditure in the industry increased, although expenditure grew faster during the year under review. The investments of the insurance companies declined by 11.2 per cent from its …

Of particular application is the vector error correction modelling technique. Apart from the determination of criteria for selecting the lag length, the paper also explored variance decomposition and effect of shocks through the impulse response function. Results from the econometric analysis revealed that output was elastic to capital injection in the …

Microfinance Impact Assessments: The Perils Of Using New Members As A Control Group, Dean S. Karlan Sep 2001

Microfinance Impact Assessments: The Perils Of Using New Members As A Control Group, Dean S. Karlan

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Microfinance institutions aim to reduce poverty. Some assess their impact through a cross-sectional impact methodology which compares veteran to new participants and then calls any difference between these two groups the "impact" of the program. Such studies have risen recently in popularity because they are cheap, easy to implement, and often encouraged by donors. USAID, through its AIMS project, encourages this methodology with its SEEP/AIMS practitioner-oriented tools. This paper intends to inform practitioners about the perils of using such a strategy, and suggests a couple of solutions to some of the larger problems with this approach.

Call For Proactivity: A Well-Directed Monetary Policy And A Stable Rupee Have Certainly Won Whiz-Kid Dr. Ishrat Husain Many Fans. Is The Banking Community Amongst Them?, Sanaa Ahmed

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Dr. Husain is definitely trying his best to win them over with his 'friends, not masters' policy. Not only that, he has established a consistent consultative regime whereby bankers are invariably consulted before major policy decisions are taken. At the same time, he stubbornly refuses to micro-manage them on a day to day basis. So the bankers should be very happy, right? Well, not entirely.

The Integration Of The East And South-East Asian Equity Markets, K. B. Tan, Yiu Kuen Tse Sep 2001

The Integration Of The East And South-East Asian Equity Markets, K. B. Tan, Yiu Kuen Tse

Research Collection School Of Economics

This study examines how the degree of capital-market integration of the East and South-East Asian (ESEA) economies varied over the period 1988–2000 following the deregulation of these markets. The deregulation process varied across the countries both in terms of intensity and timing. A greater degree of co-movements in stock prices is a reflection of greater stock-market integration. We employ Geweke’s (1982) measure of feedback for different pairs of markets. For each pair of markets, the Geweke measure shows how co-movements in daily returns of stock prices varied over time. This is followed by the vector autoregression (VAR) analysis to examine …

Are More Children A Blessing? Determinants Of The Demand For Children In Jimma, Ethiopia, Bedassa Tadesse, Sisay Asefa

International Conference on African Development Archives

Based on data from a cross-section of urban households in Southwestern Ethiopia, in this paper, we examine some endogenous household characteristics that could be targeted through market-based policy measure(s). We use a count data model and the theory of consumer behavior to first identify some important socio-economic determinants of the demand for children. Then, we simulate the average number of children desired by a woman of median household characteristics and the extent to which an exogenously set population policy goal of lower fertility can be achieved. Finally, we present the extent by which market based policy measures could help reduce …

War And Democracy, Gregory Hess, Athanasios Orphanides Aug 2001

War And Democracy, Gregory Hess, Athanasios Orphanides

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

We present a general equilibrium model of conflict to investigate whether the prevalence of democracy is sufficient to foster the perpetual peace hypothesized by Immanuel Kant and whether the world would necessarily become more peaceful as more countries adopt democratic institutions. Our exploration suggests that neither hypothesis is true. The desire of incumbent leaders with unfavorable economic performance to hold on to power generates an incentive to initiate conflict and salvage their position—with some probability. An equilibrium with positive war frequency is sustained even if all nations were to adopt representative democratic institutions and even in the absence of an …
