The Application Of Attitude Functions To The Study Of Job Attitudes, Alistair Macdonald
The Application Of Attitude Functions To The Study Of Job Attitudes, Alistair Macdonald
Graduate Theses
The current research applied the study of attitude functions to the domain of job attitudes. This study hypothesized that the psychological needs behind attitudes towards the organization would moderate the relationships between job attitudes. Forty-eight surveys were used from a sample of 81 faculty members. No significant moderating effects were found. However, a regression analysis found direct relationships between attitude functions and job attitudes. The social-adjustive (SA) function demonstrated a positive significant relationship with affective commitment and normative commitment. The self-esteem-maintenance function (S-E-M) demonstrated a negative significant relationship with affective commitment, normative commitment, and job satisfaction, and a significant positive …
Modified Local Whittle Estimation Of The Memory Parameter In The Nonstationary Case, Katsumi Shimotsu, Peter C.B. Phillips
Modified Local Whittle Estimation Of The Memory Parameter In The Nonstationary Case, Katsumi Shimotsu, Peter C.B. Phillips
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Semiparametric estimation of the memory parameter is studied in models of fractional integration in the nonstationary case, and some new representation theory for the discrete Fourier transform of a fractional process is used to assist in the analysis. A limit theory is developed for an estimator of the memory parameter that covers a range of values of d commonly encountered in applied work with economic data. The new estimator is called the modified local Whittle estimator and employs a version of the Whittle likelihood based on frequencies adjacent to the origin and modified to take into account the form of …
Pooled Log Periodogram Regression, Katsumi Shimotsu, Peter C.B. Phillips
Pooled Log Periodogram Regression, Katsumi Shimotsu, Peter C.B. Phillips
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Estimation of the memory parameter in time series with long range dependence is considered. A pooled log periodogram regression estimator is proposed that utilizes a set of mL periodogram ordinates with L approaching infinity rather than m ordinates used in the conventional log periodogram estimator. Consistency and asymptotic normality of the pooled regression estimator are established. The pooled estimator is shown to have smaller variance but larger bias than the conventional log periodogram estimator. Finite sample performance is assessed in simulations, and the methods are illustrated in an empirical application with inflation and stock returns.

Interstate Trade And Economic Development In Nigeria., Ukwu I. Ukwu
Bullion
The economy is characterized by low industrial development, predominantly poor population and low agricultural production. The paper presents an analysis of the present size and structure of the Nigerian Domestic market, examine the patterns of trade among states and zones, and consider what needs to be done to improve the domestic trade system and enable it play its appropriate role in the overdue of transformation of the Nigerian economy. Finally, the study reveals that economic development of any state or group of states can be improved if they take advantage of economic integration. The relatively low level of economic development …

Local Whittle Estimation In Nonstationary And Unit Root Cases, Katsumi Shimotsu, Peter C.B. Phillips
Local Whittle Estimation In Nonstationary And Unit Root Cases, Katsumi Shimotsu, Peter C.B. Phillips
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Asymptotic properties of the local Whittle estimator in the nonstationary case (d > 1/2) are explored. For 1/2 < d < 1, the estimator is shown to be consistent, and its limit distribution and the rate of convergence depend on the value of d . For d = 1, the limit distribution is mixed normal. For d > 1 and when the process has a linear trend, the estimator is shown to be inconsistent and to converge in probability to unity.
Equivalence Of The Higher-Order Asymptotic Efficiency Of K-Step And Extremum Statistics, Donald W.K. Andrews
Equivalence Of The Higher-Order Asymptotic Efficiency Of K-Step And Extremum Statistics, Donald W.K. Andrews
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
It is well known that a one-step scoring estimator that starts from any N 1 /2 -consistent estimator has the same first-order asymptotic efficiency as the maximum likelihood estimator. This paper extends this result to k -step estimators and test statistics for k > 1, higher-order asymptotic efficiency, and general extremum estimators and test statistics. The paper shows that a k -step estimator has the same higher-order asymptotic efficiency, to any given order, as the extremum estimator towards which it is stepping, provided (i) k is sufficiently large, (ii) some smoothness and moment conditions hold, and (iii) a condition on the …
The Economics Of Sports Facilities And Their Communities, John Siegfried, Andrew Zimbalist
The Economics Of Sports Facilities And Their Communities, John Siegfried, Andrew Zimbalist
Economics: Faculty Publications
Since the 1950s, taxpayers have been the primary investors in stadia built for the use of privately-owned professional sports teams. Team owners have argued that sports facilities boost local economic activity; however, economic reasoning and empirical evidence suggest the opposite. Public support for stadia is also driven by demand for community image, and owners of sports teams supply a scarce input into image enhancement--participation in the major league--for which they have been able to extract monopoly rents from dispersed taxpayers. We suggest reforms to dissipate the monopoly sports leagues exercise when negotiating with host communities for their teams.

Economic Currents: The State Of The State Economy, Alan Clayton-Matthews
Public Policy and Public Affairs Faculty Publication Series
The Massachusetts economy has not fully caught up with the news that labor shortages are constraining growth. Real gross state product (GSP), as proxied by the Massachusetts Current Economic Index, grew at an annualized rate of 4.3 percent in the first quarter of 2000, only moderately below the 5.4 percent pace of U.S. gross domestic product (GDP). Employment-related measures over the twelve-month period ending in April bear this out. The number of employed Massachusetts residents increased by 1.3 percent, and the number of jobs in the state grew by 2.1 percent, matching the expansion-average annual rate of job growth. Employment …

Comparative Advantage In Production And Trade In Nigeria., Emmanuel U. Ukeje
Bullion
The Nigerian economy is generally large and very diverse. The country is endowed with a highly productive agricultural base and generally favourable climatic conditions, which provide the potential for intensive production, both for domestic consumption and for exports. This paper reviews the production and trade pattern in Nigeria with a view to identifying major structural changes with regard to the relative comparative advantage enjoyed by the sectors, the other parts of the paper focuses on some theoretical and conceptual issues. The rest of the paper is divided into five sections. Section 2 focuses on some theoretical and conceptual issues. Section …

Commodities Taxes/Levies And Their Effects On Commodity Trade And Movements In Nigeria., Joe Alegieuno, A O. Balogun
Bullion
The Commodity Boards were noted for paying farmers prices that were lower than the world prices and sometimes even lower than their production costs. This difference represented implicit taxation of farm incomes and served as a dis-incentive to domestic production. This paper examines the administration of commodity taxes/levies and their effect on commodity trading in Nigeria as well as assessing the various systems of commodity marketing in Nigeria. The paper concludes that Commodity trade, in Nigeria began with the British companies exporting raw materials to their industries abroad. His was followed by the Commodity/Marketing Board era and finally trade liberation. …

The Cbn As A Catalyst To National Economic Policy And Development., J. O. Sanusi
Bullion
The paper examined the activities of the Bank into perspectives, particularly with the often-mis-construed belief the CBN should be held accountable for all the woes of the Nigerian economy. It also reviewed and appraised the performance of the CBN in the effort to meet its statutory mandate and adapt to the circumstances of the new global trend in Central Banking in which the maintenance of price stability supercedes all other objectives of monetary policy. The challenges facing the Bank are enormous, but not insurmountable. Efforts are already being made to confront these challenges. The instrument autonomy recently granted to the …
Development In The Petroleum Sub-Sector And Their Impacts On Nigerian Economy., I. P. Ojinnaka
Development In The Petroleum Sub-Sector And Their Impacts On Nigerian Economy., I. P. Ojinnaka
Bullion
The development of the petroleum industry has had both negative and positive impacts on the Nigerian economy. Two schools of thought can be examined. First, that positive impacts outweigh the negative, and secondly, the inverse. The paper will examined the impacts and analyzed the positive ones. From the approach of the study it is clear that the petroleum industry has had both negative and positive impacts on the Nigerian economy. Nigeria without petroleum could be like any other country without oil or gas, that is, import dependent. However, Nigeria with oil is the best thing that could have happened to …

Interstate Cooperation And Educational Development In Nigeria., Bankole Oni
Bullion
The paper highlights on interstate cooperation and educational development in Nigeria. Education is a major instrument for economic and social development. The process of allocating resources to the sector vis-a-vis other sectors depends again on the political priorities of the decision makers. Whether or not different states, which belong to the same ideological camp, can and will cooperate in the field of education in future is not certain. The empirical analysis of existing facts have further strengthened the hypothesis that there exists a structural and cause - effect relationship between education and other aspects of the social structure. Political competition …

Explaining The Growth In Municipal Recycling Programs: The Role Of Market And Non-Market Factors, Thomas C. Kinnaman
Explaining The Growth In Municipal Recycling Programs: The Role Of Market And Non-Market Factors, Thomas C. Kinnaman
Faculty Journal Articles
The implementation of thousands of municipal recycling programs in the United States has increased recycling’s portion of solid waste from 10% to 30% over the past decade. But the lack of accurate data has spurred a debate over whether the growth in recycling can be attributed to market or nonmarket factors. To address this issue, this article conducts a benefit-cost analysis of a municipal recycling program. Results suggest recycling is costly. So why, then, does it remain popular? This article suggests that local governments could be responding to households that perceive a benefit from recycling services. These benefits are estimated …

An Analysis Of The Interest Elasticity Of Financial Asset Holdings By Income, Brian Amick, James Mcgibany
An Analysis Of The Interest Elasticity Of Financial Asset Holdings By Income, Brian Amick, James Mcgibany
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
A Keynesian money demand model is used to examine the interest elasticity of financial asset holdings by income level. In this model, once an individual receives income, they first make transactions, and any leftover income goes for speculative purposes. Since only speculative balances are assumed to change with interest rates, individuals with income used mainly for transactions purposes are theorized to have asset holdings that are unresponsive to interest rates, while higher income individuals with speculative balances are expected to be more responsive to interest rates. The results support the Keynesian model, as lower income households are found to have …
The Impact Of Public School Attributes On Home Sale Prices In California, David E. Clark, William E. Herrin
The Impact Of Public School Attributes On Home Sale Prices In California, David E. Clark, William E. Herrin
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
The quality of public schools is often cited as an important attribute which distinguishes a community. Indeed, a recent public opinion poll conducted by the California Public Education Partnership indicates that residents rank improvements in public education higher than such high profile issues as environmental quality and crime reduction. In order to explore the role of educational quality in determining residential property values, a hedonic housing price model is used on a large sample of homes which sold within Fresno County in California over the period 1990-1994. After controlling for a wide range of housing characteristics and neighborhood features, the …
