Financial Capital, Human Capital, And The Transition To Self-Employment; Evidence From Intergenerational Links, Thomas Dunn, Douglas Holtz-Eakin
Financial Capital, Human Capital, And The Transition To Self-Employment; Evidence From Intergenerational Links, Thomas Dunn, Douglas Holtz-Eakin
Center for Policy Research
The environment for business creation is central to economic policy, as entrepreneurs are believed to be forces of innovation, employment and economic dynamism. We use data from the National Longitudinal Surveys (NLS) to investigate the relative importance of financial and human capital exploiting the variation provided by intergenerational links. Specifically, we estimate the impacts of parental wealth and human capital on the probability that an individual will make the transition from a wage and salary job to self-employment. We find that young men’s own financial assets exert a statistically significant, but quantitatively modest effect on the transition to self-employment. In …

The Impact Of Personal And Location Characteristics Upon Elderly Interstate Migration, David E. Clark, Thomas A. Knapp, Nancy E. White
The Impact Of Personal And Location Characteristics Upon Elderly Interstate Migration, David E. Clark, Thomas A. Knapp, Nancy E. White
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of locational and individual characteristics upon interstate retiree migration, particularly in state-level public policy variables. Data regarding the characteristics of individual movers are drawn from the 1990 US. Census of Population and Housing 5% Public Use Microdata Sample. The household data are merged with location-specific attributes including both natural amenities and local fiscal variables. Three specifications of the model are estimated. The “push” model analyzes the impact of origin characteristics upon migration between states, while the “pull” model demonstrates the influence of destination characteristics upon interstate migration. The final specification …

The Effect Of New Rice Technology Of [!] Income Distribution In Agricultural Households In West Bengal, India, Ellyn N. Neal
The Effect Of New Rice Technology Of [!] Income Distribution In Agricultural Households In West Bengal, India, Ellyn N. Neal
Electronic Dissertations and Theses
The emergence of the high-yielding varieties (HYVs) as alternatives to traditional varieties (IVS) of wheat, rice, and several other crops has been a major event in many developing countries during the last two decades. The output, income, and employment-augmenting effects of this modern technology have been documented in many regions of the world. The existing studies have focused on aggregate economic· indicators at national, regional, and sectoral levels. However, questions regarding the effects of higher levels of production on the distribution of income among rural families have been asked. This study assesses alternative sources of income supporting agricultural households in …
A Study Of The Efficiency In Four Foreign Exchange Markets Using The Survey Data, Jiamei Zhu
A Study Of The Efficiency In Four Foreign Exchange Markets Using The Survey Data, Jiamei Zhu
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this paper is to reexamine the efficiency condition in four foreign exchange market: U.S.—British, U.S.—Canadian, U.S.—Japanese, U.S.—German. Survey data was used to separate the risk premium arguments from irrationality. Only two markets are considered efficient based on the statistical test: U.S.—Canadian, U.S.—Japanese. Three models were conducted to explain the risk premium which is the factor causing the bias between the forward and the spot rate in the U.S.—German and the U.S.-Japanese markets. Lag Model (Model 2) turns out to be the only model that can explain the risk condition in the U.S.—Japanese market. All the three tested …
An Empirical Investigation Into The Causes Of The Dollar's Decline (1985-1993), Ricky Stagg
An Empirical Investigation Into The Causes Of The Dollar's Decline (1985-1993), Ricky Stagg
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In this paper, the writer develops and estimates a synthesis of the monetary and the portfolio-balance approaches of exchange rate determination in an attempt to explain the dollar's recent depreciation. Since 1985, the U.S. dollar has declined against the German deutsche mark and the Japanese yen. Different explanations have arisen as to the cause of the dollar's depreciation. Some economists blame U.S. monetary policy makers for flooding the world with dollars. Others ascribe fault to fiscal policy makers for not being able to bring the budget and current account deficits under control. And still others attribute most of the U.S.'s …

Matrices With Identical Sets Of Neighbors, Imre Bárány, Herbert E. Scarf
Matrices With Identical Sets Of Neighbors, Imre Bárány, Herbert E. Scarf
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Given a generic m by n matrix A , a lattice point h in Z is a neighbor of the origin if the body { x : Ax < b }, with b i = max{0, a i h }, i = 1, …, m , contains no lattice point other than 0 and h . The set of neighbors, N ( A ), is finite and Asymmetric. We show that if A’ is another matrix of the same size with the property that sign a i h = sign a i ’ h for every i and every h in N ( A ), then A’ has precisely the same set of neighbors as A . The collection of such matrices is a polyhedral cone, described by a finite set of linear inequalities, each such inequality corresponding to a generator of one of the cones C i = pos( h in N ( A ): a i h < 0}. Computational experience shows that C i has “few” generators. We demonstrate this in the first nontrivial case n = 3, m = 4.
Tests Of Seasonal And Non-Seasonal Serial Correlation, Donald W.K. Andrews, Xuemei Liu, Werner Ploberger
Tests Of Seasonal And Non-Seasonal Serial Correlation, Donald W.K. Andrews, Xuemei Liu, Werner Ploberger
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper considers tests for seasonal and non-seasonal serial correlation in time series and in the errors of regression models. The problem of testing for white noise against multiplicative seasonal ARMA(l,l)-ARMA(l,l) alternatives is investigated. This testing problem is non-standard due to nuisance parameters that appear under the alternative but not under the null hypothesis. The likelihood ratio (LR), sup Lagrange multiplier (LM), and exponential average LM and LR tests are considered and are shown to be asymptotically admissible for multiplicative seasonal ARMA(l,l)-ARMA(l,l) alternatives. In addition, they are shown to be consistent against all (weakly stationary strong mixing) non-white noise alternatives. …
A Scorecard For Indexed Government Debt, John Y. Campbell, Robert J. Shiller
A Scorecard For Indexed Government Debt, John Y. Campbell, Robert J. Shiller
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Within the last five years, Canada, Sweden and New Zealand have joined the ranks of the United Kingdom and other countries in issuing government bonds that are indexed to inflation. Some observers of the experience in these countries have argued that the United States should follow suit. This paper provides an overview of the issues surrounding debt indexation, and it tries to answer three empirical questions about indexed debt. First, how different would the returns on indexed bonds be from the returns on existing US debt instruments? Second, how would indexed bonds affect the government’s average financing costs? Third, how …

Hedging With Derivatives In Incomplete Markets, Charalambos D. Aliprantis, Donald J. Brown, J. Werner
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We present necessary and sufficient conditions on the asset span of incomplete derivative markets for insuring marketed portfolios. If the asset span is finite dimensional there exists a polynomial-time algorithm for deciding if every marketed portfolio is insurable, moreover this algorithm computes the minimum cost insurance portfolio. In addition, we extend the Cox-Leland characterization of optimal portfolio insurance in complete derivative markets to asset spans of incomplete derivative markets where every marketed portfolio is insurable.
Inflation Forecasts: How Good Are They?, Dean D. Croushore
Inflation Forecasts: How Good Are They?, Dean D. Croushore
Economics Faculty Publications
Forecasts of inflation affect decision-making in many segments of the economy. But in the early 1980s, economists found that forecasts in surveys taken over the past 20 years systematically underpredicted inflation. As a result, many economists stopped paying attention to forecasts. However, they may have abandoned them too quickly. In this article, Dean Croushore takes a closer look at survey forecasts and, after considering some relevant factors, concludes that inflation forecasts may not be as bad as you think.

An Estimation Of Three Sets Of Indicators Of Financial Risk Among Multifamily Properties, Amy S. Bogdon, James R. Follain
An Estimation Of Three Sets Of Indicators Of Financial Risk Among Multifamily Properties, Amy S. Bogdon, James R. Follain
Center for Policy Research
A lack of information about the financial condition of multifamily properties has hindered the development of a secondary mortgage market in multifamily mortgages and federal policies to finance multifamily housing. The purpose of this paper is to improve our understanding of the financial condition of multifamily properties. The centerpiece of the analysis is the 1991 RFS [U.S. Bureau of the Census]. Three sets of indicators of financial distress are examined in this paper. The first is interest rate related risk. We find that twenty five percent of the properties with mortgages have contract interest rates at least 87 basis points …
A Partial Equilibrium Analysis Of Nafta And Its Impact On U.S. Beef Trade With Canada And Mexico, Srinidhi Ananthramiah
A Partial Equilibrium Analysis Of Nafta And Its Impact On U.S. Beef Trade With Canada And Mexico, Srinidhi Ananthramiah
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In September 1993, the United States Congress formally ratified the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in conjunction with the legislatures of Canada and Mexico. NAFTA phases out tariff barriers between the United States, Canada, and Mexico over a period of several years.
The primary purpose of this study is to provide an empirical tool for evaluating the effects of NAFTA on beef trade between Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Trends were identified in U.S. beef exports and imports to Canada and Mexico over a period of several years. From the data on import/export quantities and prices, relevant elasticities …
Financial Innovation, José C. Blanco
Financial Innovation, José C. Blanco
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This dissertation was a study of the impact of financial innovation upon financial institutions and some of the collateral macroeconomics effects. Financial innovation has impacted the distribution of household assets throughout the Group of Seven (G-7) countries and indirectly negatively influenced the usage of traditional monetary aggregates as a reliable tool to forecast the growth in the domestic money supply between 1960 and 1990.
The empirical results indicate that the adoption of financial innovations by large U.S. commercial banks has not influenced their return on equity and the return of assets between 1990 and 1994. The variability of the return …

Predicting The Divorce Decisions Of Young Women Using The National Longitudinal Survey Of Youth, Angela A. Smith '96
Predicting The Divorce Decisions Of Young Women Using The National Longitudinal Survey Of Youth, Angela A. Smith '96
Honors Projects
Over recent decades, we have witnessed drastic changes in American family structure. Previous studies, such as those performed by Gary Becker (1991) and Manser and Brown (1980) have applied economic models to divorce and other family structure decisions. Building on the utility maximization analysis of Manser and Brown, as adapted by John Ermisch (1993), this study uses a logit regression analysis to predict divorce decisions for an all female sample of respondents, ages 28 to 36. Data are extracted from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth for this analysis. Economic theory predicts that the probability of divorce is directly related …
Automobile Leasing Versus Installment Loan Credit: A Comparative Analysis, Susan E. Brown '96
Automobile Leasing Versus Installment Loan Credit: A Comparative Analysis, Susan E. Brown '96
Honors Projects
The Shortino family has done what many other consumers are doing--Ieasing an automobile. As a result, leasing is becoming an increasingly popular method of automobile financing. But why is leasing advantageous for the Shortino family? Johanna Shortino stated that the principle advantage of leasing was the savings on the down payment. While this may be true, there are also other factors to consider. For example, consider the contrast in the Shortinos' vehicles: an "aging" Datsun versus a new Cadillac. This shift is a significant trade upward among automobile classes and suggests another advantage to leasing: leasing can make expensive cars …
Exchange Rate Variability And Its Effect On Trade: A Case Study Of The Cfa Free Trade Zone, Gwendolyn M. Alexander '96
Exchange Rate Variability And Its Effect On Trade: A Case Study Of The Cfa Free Trade Zone, Gwendolyn M. Alexander '96
Honors Projects
Since the fall of the Bretton Woods agreement and the rise of a floating exchange rate regime, there has been a marked increase in the volatility of exchange rates. The movement of exchange rates relative to other currencies, or exchange rate variability is seen as a risk by importers and exporters. The uncertainty surrounding exchange rate movements affects importers and exporters who must determine domestic prices of traded goods without knowing how the exchange rate will move between the time an order is placed and the time payment is due. Theory supports that as exchange rate variability increases, ceteris paribus, …

How Managed Care Affects Medicaid Utilization: A Synthetic Difference-In-Differences Zero-Inflated Count Model, Thomas J. Kniesner, Deborah A. Freund, Anthony T. Lo Sasso
Economics - All Scholarship
We develop a synthetic difference-in-differences statistical design to apply to experimental data for adult women living in Hennepin County, Minnesota, to estimate the impact of Medicaid managed care on various modes of medical care use. Because the outcomes of interest are utilization counts with many persons using none of a particular mode of care we use count regression models that are adjusted for excessive zeros. We find no reductions in physician visits or hospital inpatient and emergency department care use, but reductions in hospital outpatient care. Simulations designed to judge the economic significance of our results suggest a program effect …

Cultural Wage Differentials Among United States Immigrants, William J. Takahashi '96
Cultural Wage Differentials Among United States Immigrants, William J. Takahashi '96
Honors Projects
One ofthe most debated political and social issues in contemporary America is that of immigration. As a nation ofimmigrants and descendants ofimmigrants, the United States is grappling with the conflict over whether or not continued immigration will prove to be beneficial or detrimental to the economy and society. Immigration is an issue as old as the United States itself, yet it seems as though this generation of leaders is more determined than ever to make lasting changes in the policy concerning immigration. Some argue that a consistent inflow ofdiverse and talented human beings will advance the nation's economy as it …
