Effects Of Affluence On Rising Household Carbon Emission In The Philippines: An Application Using Quantile Regression Approach, Moises Neil V. Seriño

This study investigates whether rising affluence affects carbon emission differently by considering the distribution of households based on the level of emission. Whereas there are several empirical studies that examine this issue with mean based regression approach, limited studies have investigated the effect of affluence on the quantiles of household emission controlling for several household characteristics. Employing the methods of quantile regression, results show that rising affluence affects household emission differently. The effect is more pronounced among households in the upper emission quantile as compared to households in the lower emission quantile. This suggests that an increase in income translates …

This study is primarily aimed at identifying significant factors that affect the level of cash holding of 77 manufacturing companies listed in the Indonesian Stock Exchange for the period 2009 to 2013. Factors normally identified in the literature that affect cash holding, including the levels of growth opportunity, networking capital, and financial leverage of firms, are examined in the study. Other than these variables, this study also incorporated the profitability and capital expenditure of the firms as controlled variables. This study is an assessment of the impact of climate change on the biophysical vulnerability of aquaculture production in Sarawak. The relationship between change in risk factors with the total aquaculture production and farmer’s income is identified. It utilizes data from the survey done on 249 aquaculture farmers in Sarawak, as well as secondary data gathered from various government reports. The multiple linear regressions results verify that the mean minimum temperature has a positive significant effect on freshwater ponds, while relative humidity has a negative significant effect on brackish water ponds. This study aims to investigate the influences and contributions of financial integration on real sectors in ASEAN+3 economies. It employs General Methods of Moment (GMM) technique and uses the proxies of financial integration and real economy from 1990 to 2012. The findings show that financial integration on real economy has positive effect, such as increasing government spending, reducing unemployment, and so forth. The finding has great implications for the regional economies. It is recommended that the policy makers improve the financial integration in order to develop the real economy.

There are four main differences between the Philippine and American statutes that promote breastfeeding. First, the Philippine law provides that lactation breaks should be compensated while the American law explicitly stated that employers are under no such obligation. Second, the Philippine law provides for “culturally appropriate lactation care and services” whereas majority of American states exempt breastfeeding from public indecency laws. The inoperability input-output model (IIM) has recently been proposed as an extension of conventional input-output analysis for assessing the vulnerability of interdependent infrastructures to various perturbations, such as natural disasters, industrial accidents, and deliberate attacks. The IIM framework makes use of a dimensionless risk metric called inoperability, which quantifies the degree of failure of a system on a scale ranging from 0 (normal state) to 1 (total failure). Distributive fairness, procedural fairness, and interactional fairness are often researched together in many previous studies. However, in order to explore the power of fairness, the second-order fairness needs to be created to find the way to customer loyalty. An online survey was developed and distributed in Vietnam. Seven hundred fifty-eight questionnaires were completed and analyzed using a two-step methodology (including confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling). The results of the study showed that there is the domino effect to customer loyalty, which departs from fairness, with trust and customer satisfaction as two mediators.

This study aimed to explore and decompose income inequality in Eastern Visayas, Philippines into the following factors: location (urban-rural), age, educational attainment, and sources of income using expenditure and income approach for 2000 and 2006. Inequality in the region remains high but tends to diminish mildly. Using decomposition analysis, results revealed that inequality is mostly explained by the within-group inequality component. When decomposing inequality by income source, results showed that total inequality is largely influenced by wage income while income from agricultural sector contributed the least share to total inequality. This paper determined the drivers and impact of precarious work on the hotel workers and their unions. Based on the proposition that precarious work undermines decent work, a descriptive study with the use of the survey method among 93 respondents from 12 unionized hotels was undertaken. Results showed that the main reason that drives the hotel management to resort to precarious work practices is to lower expenses or costs for salaries and benefits and increase profit. Precarious work has also significantly weakened the union as an organization since their membership continues to decline and their source of fund is reduced. …

This study investigates the link between property rights and capital accumulation in the context of poverty alleviation in the Philippines. Property rights are represented by the provision of land titles to those informal settlers while capital accumulation is concretely manifested through access to credit. The purpose of this study is to test the relationships among employer branding, employee engagement, and discretionary effort via the effect of employee expectation. A survey was conducted with 1,349 current employees working in Thai petroleum industry. The results indicated that there were strong positive relationships between employer branding and employee engagement, employee engagement and discretionary effort, employer branding and discretionary effort, employer branding and employee expectation, and employee expectation and employee engagement. I use Bayesian methods to estimate a medium-scale closed economy dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) model for the Philippine economy. Bayesian model selection techniques indicate that among the frictions introduced in the model, the investment adjustment costs, habit formation, and the price and wage rigidity features are important in capturing the dynamics of the data, while the variable capital utilization, fixed costs, and the price and wage indexation features are not important.
