The Role Of Fiscal Policy In A Natural Disaster-Prone Economy, Dickson Lim
The Role Of Fiscal Policy In A Natural Disaster-Prone Economy, Dickson Lim
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Theoretical work done on the macroeconomic impact of natural disasters has neglected the role of fiscal policy in stabilizing other sectors of the economy. Although inclusion of a public sector with a fiscal authority in macroeconomic models is common in the literature, most of these models assume that government expenditures are unproductive in that they do not accrue to anyone but the government. In reality, for a model that incorporates natural disaster and foreign aid, having a productive fiscal authority that produces public goods and services, as well as infrastructure, is necessary to capture the real effects of foreign aid …
Deep Habits And Taxes: A Simulation Study, Lawrence B. Dacuycuy
Deep Habits And Taxes: A Simulation Study, Lawrence B. Dacuycuy
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Using a calibrated dynamic model that embeds endogenous fiscal policy tools, this note provides simulation evidence on the effectiveness of tax and fiscal spending policies in determining key macroeconomic outcomes. The model was chosen because newly imposed taxes in the Philippines have affected the prices of consumption varieties and plausibly because of deep habits, the pricing policies of firms have become dynamic. Building upon the seminal model of Ravn, Schmitt-Grohe, and Uribe (2006), this note shows that preference structures do have a key role to play in determining the response of private consumption to endogenous fiscal policy. Results show that …
Can Government Bond Replace Rational Bubbles? The Empirical Investigation On Singapore And Thailand, Athakrit Thepmongkol, Pichet Kaytanyaluk
Can Government Bond Replace Rational Bubbles? The Empirical Investigation On Singapore And Thailand, Athakrit Thepmongkol, Pichet Kaytanyaluk
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This paper aims to test the theoretical policy implication on rational bubbles. Many works, including Caballero and Krishnamurthy (2006), Kocherlakota (2009), and Martin and Ventura (2011), suggested that government bonds can rule out rational bubbles. We constructed our own bubble index using the Fourier transformation technique and, as a result, found the empirical support of the theory in the case of Singapore, but not in the case of Thailand. For the case of Singapore, the credibility in an ability to collect tax and the appropriate yield of government bonds are keys to the effectiveness of such the anti-bubble policy. Moreover, …
How Does Value Relevance Of Accounting Information React To Financial Crisis?, Karl Louis Eugenio, Rhobe Mitch Ailarie Parel, Katrina Marie Reyes, Keith Brian Yu, Cynthia Cudia
How Does Value Relevance Of Accounting Information React To Financial Crisis?, Karl Louis Eugenio, Rhobe Mitch Ailarie Parel, Katrina Marie Reyes, Keith Brian Yu, Cynthia Cudia
DLSU Business & Economics Review
The relevance of financial reports rests on the value relevance of accounting information. Since accounting information is value relevant only when used by investors to reflect stock valuations, it takes trust from the users of financial information over the financial statements. The heightened volatility of markets during periods of financial distress or crisis raises the imperative to determine the value of financial information during these periods. The great recession of 2008 also victimized East Asia, and firm strategies were influenced by resulting economic shocks. In this study, we aim to determine how value relevance of accounting information differ before, during, …

Impact Of Cash Holding On Foreign Institutional Holding In Large Manufacturing Companies In India: An Empirical Study, Souvik Banerjee
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Foreign institutions are playing a major role in a number of emerging market economies these days. In India, their investment acts as one of the cornerstones of market movement. In this research paper, it is explored whether cash holding levels have a bearing on the foreign institutional holding in large manufacturing companies in India. Various factors like size, profitability, growth opportunity, lifecycle, prior dividend payout, leverage, and so forth are controlled. Data is analyzed for a period of 16 years starting from the financial year 2000–01. The analysis is done in the form of panel data. The findings of the empirical …
Anticipating Aging And Prospecting Pension For Retirement Well-Being, Roberto E. Javier Jr., Mitzie Irene Conchada, Melvin Jabar
Anticipating Aging And Prospecting Pension For Retirement Well-Being, Roberto E. Javier Jr., Mitzie Irene Conchada, Melvin Jabar
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Filipino young and middle-aged adults anticipate old age positively as it is a mark of achievement in human life but negatively apprehend living through their old age, given the high incidence of poverty among the elderly in the Philippines. The issues surrounding the insurance system, income security, and social pension in old age were all related to unfavorable views about living through the aging years. In-depth group interviews (IGIs) conducted across cities and municipalities in the countryside generated conceptions about aging and concerns about becoming old in a society with no strong social protection for its graying population. A qualitative …
Assessing The Poverty And Distributional Impact Of Alternative Rice Policies In The Philippines, Caesar B. Cororaton, Krista Danielle S. Yu
Assessing The Poverty And Distributional Impact Of Alternative Rice Policies In The Philippines, Caesar B. Cororaton, Krista Danielle S. Yu
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Philippine domestic prices of rice are significantly higher than world prices for similar rice quality. The WTO- approved Philippine rice waiver, which allows the government to continue its quantitative restrictions on rice imports, sustains
the price gap in rice and prolongs the heavy burden on poor consumers who spend a significant amount of their income on rice. The results of rice policy simulations using a CGE model with poverty microsimulation indicate that a tariffication of the quantitative restrictions on rice imports, which maintains the level of protection to the local paddy farmers and the utilization of the generated revenue as …
Measuring Fiscal And Monetary Policies Spillovers In Asean, Thi Mai Lien Dau, Yuthana Sethapramote
Measuring Fiscal And Monetary Policies Spillovers In Asean, Thi Mai Lien Dau, Yuthana Sethapramote
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This paper aims to comprehensively examine fiscal and monetary policies spillovers to real GDP and inflation in ASEAN-5 countries. We examine the effects of shocks from each of the ASEAN members and advanced economies by employing the global vector autoregression (GVAR) model because it allows us to investigate this issue in a multinational system. The empirical results show several important findings. Generally, both internal and external fiscal and monetary spillovers have a significant effect on all ASEAN-5 countries, although internal monetary spillover seems to be stronger than internal fiscal spillovers. At country level, out of the five ASEAN countries, Indonesia’s …
On Implementation Delays, Marginal Costs And Price Dynamics: A Theoretical Note With Implications For The Philippines, Lawrence B. Dacuycuy, Mariel Monica Sauler, Dickson Lim
On Implementation Delays, Marginal Costs And Price Dynamics: A Theoretical Note With Implications For The Philippines, Lawrence B. Dacuycuy, Mariel Monica Sauler, Dickson Lim
DLSU Business & Economics Review
It has been known that longer implementation delays in public investments result in sluggish accumulation of public capital. In models in which public capital determines firm productivity, the longer the duration of implementation delays, the
higher the marginal costs which, in a New Keynesian economy means higher price markups. Consequently, higher mark- ups may increase the inflation rate, leading to an appropriate monetary policy response. Using a dynamic stochastic general
equilibrium (DSGE) model, this theoretical note focuses on the relationships among government investments, firm pricing policy, and monetary policy. It addresses some aspects of public investment, and through simulations, characterizes …

Development Of A Composite Lean Index To Measure Lean Implementation In Philippine Manufacturing Companies, Willy F. Zalatar, Anna Bella D. Siriban-Manalang
Development Of A Composite Lean Index To Measure Lean Implementation In Philippine Manufacturing Companies, Willy F. Zalatar, Anna Bella D. Siriban-Manalang
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Lean manufacturing has been gaining worldwide popularity as a means of reducing waste, improving quality, and increasing the competitiveness of manufacturing firms. This paper aims to develop a composite lean index (CLI) which can be used to measure the degree of lean adoption in Philippine manufacturing companies. The lean index employs actual quantitative data, rather than subjective assessment, which is more prevalent in the literature. Fifteen performance indicators divided into process and equipment, manufacturing planning and control, human resources, and supplier and customer relationships are proposed and then validated using empirical data. Results showed that a CLI, which yields a …

Stability And Resilience Of Equity Markets Amidst The 2008 Global Financial Crisis: Islamic Versus Conventional Markets, M. Shabri Abd. Majid
DLSU Business & Economics Review
The objective of this study is to empirically explore the impacts of the 2008 global financial crisis on both Islamic and conventional equity markets of Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, the UK, and the US. Daily closing indices, spanning from July 2007 to July 2011, were utilized and analyzed using cointegration technique and impulse response functions. The study found that the conventional equity markets performed marginally poorer than their Islamic counterparts during the 2008 global financial crisis. This finding implied that the Islamic equity markets were more stable and resilient than the conventional equity markets amidst the crisis period.
Acculturative Products Uniqueness Antecedence For Successful Marketing Performance, Gita Sugiyarti, Augusty Tae Ferdinand, Tatiek Nurchayati
Acculturative Products Uniqueness Antecedence For Successful Marketing Performance, Gita Sugiyarti, Augusty Tae Ferdinand, Tatiek Nurchayati
DLSU Business & Economics Review
The purpose of this study is to mediate the influence of market sensing capabilities on the marketing performance by proposing acculturative products uniqueness that mediate the gap between market sensing capabilities and improvement of marketing performance. The sample data from 160 small and medium enterprises of batik, ceramics, and interior design in Indonesia were used to test the model consisting of four hypotheses. The statistical tests in our model used four variables: market sensing capabilities, product innovation, acculturative products uniqueness, and marketing performance. The results of the data show that acculturative products uniqueness has an important role in improving marketing …
The Effect Of Global Financial Crisis On Asean Growth: Evidence From Stock Market Analysis, Siti Muliana Samsi, Zarinah Yusof, Kee-Cheok Cheong
The Effect Of Global Financial Crisis On Asean Growth: Evidence From Stock Market Analysis, Siti Muliana Samsi, Zarinah Yusof, Kee-Cheok Cheong
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This study empirically examines the effects of the global financial crisis on economic growth through a model that considers various sectoral indices, with particular reference to the stock market, bank, and real estate. Using analysis of cointegration, parsimonious error correction model (PECM), impulse response function (IRF) and variance decomposition analysis (VDC), the study found that the effect of the global financial crisis on growth differs among ASEAN-5 countries. The PECM analysis reveals that the crisis has the real effect on the stock market and bank equations. Three out of five ASEAN countries show that the global financial crisis has a …
On The Existence Of Calendar Anomalies And Persistence In The Daily Returns Of The Psei, Kristine Joy E. Carpio
On The Existence Of Calendar Anomalies And Persistence In The Daily Returns Of The Psei, Kristine Joy E. Carpio
DLSU Business & Economics Review
The future of the stock market may never be predicted consistently, nor its past behavior understood entirely, but any knowledge gained from observing it could help decide on a sound investment strategy. In this study, I looked at the daily returns of the Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) from March 1, 1990, to January 31, 2017, and see how the data relates to the mathematically verifiable aspects of the noise theory and efficient market theory (EMT). In relation to the noise theory, I looked at the occurrences of anomalies. For the EMT, I made use of discrete-time Markov chains to …
Dynamics Of Social Capital Among Fair Trade And Non-Fair Trade Coffee Farmers, Reynaldo A. Bautista Jr.
Dynamics Of Social Capital Among Fair Trade And Non-Fair Trade Coffee Farmers, Reynaldo A. Bautista Jr.
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Fair trade (FT), a movement that aims to set fair prices for products, alleviate poverty, and assist producers marginalized by the traditional economic model, lends itself to investigation through social capital (SC) lens as SC sits within the network theory area of management literature. The primary contribution of this paper is the analysis of whether FT impacts the dynamics of the different SC dimensions. This study used both quantitative and qualitative techniques. I surveyed 97 farmers from Atok (fair trade supplier) and 96 farmers from Tublay (non-fair trade supplier). Also, I conducted focus group discussions of 8 to 10 members …

Diffusion Of Hong Kong Office Property Prices Across Quality Classes: Ripple Down Or Ripple Up?, Ming-Long Lee, Ming-Te Lee, Shew-Huei Kuo
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This study explores whether and how office property prices diffuse across quality classes in Hong Kong. The empirical results reveal that the trends in office property prices are stochastic and demonstrate significant price lead-lag relationships among office property classes. The lead-lag patterns are apparent in both the long run and the short run. In addition, shocks from Class C prices have the strongest and longest-lasting impact on office prices in Hong Kong. In addition to providing new evidence on the ripple effect of commercial property prices across quality classes, this is the first study to explore the ripple effect of …

Impact Of Ownership Structure On Capital Structure- Empirical Evidence From Listed Firms In Vietnam, Tran Thi Xuan Anh, Le Quoc Tuan, Bui Ngoc Phuong
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This research examines whether and to what degree does ownership structure affect the capital structure, using a universal sample of Vietnamese listed firms from 2009 to 2015. We consider the ownership structure in two dimensions: ownership concentration and ownership types. Our paper is among the few to deploy Herfindahl index of all major shareholders, institutional shareholders, and even foreign shareholders as proxies for ownership concentration. The results depict a positive and significant impact of ownership concentration on the overall capital structure of the companies. Further tests indicate that the effect of ownership structure is stronger for short-term debt and bank …

DLSU Business & Economics Review
This study is about the effect of an institution on the production cost efficiency of organic rice farming. This research used the stochastic frontier approach with cross-section data and estimated with maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). This study aims to determine the effect of institution variables on production cost inefficiency. A survey was conducted on 216 organic rice farmers during two planting seasons using purposive sampling method in Dlingo Village, Mojosongo, Boyolali, Central Java, Indonesia. The result of the research shows that the average value of production cost efficiency is 0.4268. The role of farmer groups and agricultural counselors is the …
Physician Quality And Payment Schemes: A Theoretical And Empirical Analysis, Renz Adrian T. Calub
Physician Quality And Payment Schemes: A Theoretical And Empirical Analysis, Renz Adrian T. Calub
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Physicians are expected to provide the best healthcare to their patients; however, it cannot be discounted that their practice is driven primarily by incentives. In this paper, a physician utility maximization model that links physician quality of service to compensation schemes was constructed. Results showed that relative to fixed payment, fee-for-service and mixed payment yield higher quality. Multinomial treatment effects regression of vignette scores on payment schemes also support this hypothesis, indicating that physicians are still below the best level of quality and that incentives to improve are still present.

Strategic Position Of Bond Markets In Asean-5: Challenges And Directions For Development, Sorasart Sukcharoensin
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This study compares and analyzes the strategic position of bond markets in ASEAN-5 countries using the Strategic Position and Action Evaluation matrix approach as a diagnostic tool. The results reveal that the bond markets in Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand are in an aggressive posture, whereas the bond market in the Philippines is in the conservative position and the Indonesian bond market is the one in a defensive posture. The current strategic position of each bond market, together with scores in each dimension, helps identify key prospects and challenges that could considerably affect strategic development of bond markets in the region.

Ownership Structure And Stock Return Asymmetries In Asean-5 Stock Markets: A Firm-Level Analysis, Sorasart Sukcharoensin, Pariyada Sukcharoensin
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This paper explores the relationship between ownership structure and the skewness in the stock return distribution among ASEAN-5 equity markets, including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand during 2007–2015. This study adds to the existing literatures that ownership structure can explain skewness of the stock returns. The empirical results reveal that stock returns in ASEAN-5 markets present asymmetric distribution. Further, by employing firm-level data, the results show that ownership structure, cumulative daily stock returns, firm size, and market-to-book ratio significantly affect future skewness of the stock returns.
Inflation And Public Debt Dynamics In Asean, Yuthana Sethapramote, Athakrit Thepmongkol
Inflation And Public Debt Dynamics In Asean, Yuthana Sethapramote, Athakrit Thepmongkol
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This paper studies how inflation affects the debt dynamics focusing on six ASEAN countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Using projection data, we perform simulations of debt dynamics under various inflation policies. It results that Vietnam has the highest ability of inflating debt, while the Philippines is lastly ranked. Moreover, the optimal inflation rate for each member country and also the common policy rate for ASEAN integration are calculated under additional debt management motive. We found that if the ASEAN happened to use the common inflation policy rate, Malaysia and the Philippines would not be much affected …

Regime-Switching Business Cycle Synchronization In The Asean, Yuthana Sethapramote, Athakrit Thepmongkol
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This paper investigates patterns of business cycle synchronization and analyzes the underlying common factors in six ASEAN countries, that is, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Two important findings result. First, according to resulting regime probabilities calculated from the Markov-switching model, Singapore is not synchronized with other ASEAN members, while Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines are highly correlated. Second, according to the principal component analysis, we find that the world’s import value growth, the output growth of China, and the capital flow of Singapore are most likely to account for 88% of variation in probabilities of the ASEAN …

Compliance Theory: A Case Study Approach In Understanding Organizational Commitment, Nelson J. Celis
DLSU Business & Economics Review
The Electronic Commerce (e-Commerce) Act of 2000 or Republic Act (RA) No. 8792 mandates all government agencies to transact business and perform government functions using electronic documents within two years from the date of its effectivity in June 2000. Unfortunately, only a handful of government agencies were ready to implement the said law in the year 2002 despite the availability of applicable information technology (IT) resources and appropriated budget. After 17 years, there is considerable improvement in the compliance with the said law, though there are still non-compliances of government offices that could not manage to be at par with …
Determinants Of Earnings Management Choice Among Publicly Listed Industrial Firms In The Philippines, Cynthia P. Cudia, Aeson Luiz C. Dela Cruz
Determinants Of Earnings Management Choice Among Publicly Listed Industrial Firms In The Philippines, Cynthia P. Cudia, Aeson Luiz C. Dela Cruz
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Earnings management involves the use of acceptable accounting rules and procedures as well as circumventing business activities to achieve desired ends. In the literature, earnings management through discretionary accruals has always been associated with an opportunistic motive to mislead various stakeholders about a business’ financial performance to the advantage of owners and managers. However, the literature presented two possible motives behind earnings management, namely: an opportunistic, a self-serving perspective which mirrors the agency problem; and an efficient motive which utilizes earnings management as a signalling mechanism to send signals about the firm to its stakeholders. In this paper, we investigate …
