The retail feed industry has grown continually in importance during the past 60 years. Increased population has placed ever greater demands upon food production to feed our nation's people. During 1968, the average American consumed 80 pounds of beef, 63 pounds of pork, 8 pounds of veal, 4 pounds of lamb, 26 pounds of chicken, and 11 pounds of lard. This amounted to an annual per capita consumption of 188 pounds of red meat. With 173 million people to feed, vast quantities of livestock must be produced, finished, and marketed to satisfy our nation's needs.

Utah ranked nineteenth in the United States in the production of peaches for a ten year period 1940-49, producing 1.2 percent of the national total. Peach production is an important part of Utah's fruit industry. The 1951 peach crop estimated at 800,000 bushels, valued at $1,520,000 represents 32 percent of the value of all the fruit grown in Utah and 0.8 percent of the value of all agricultural commodities grown in the state.

Chickens and eggs rank fourth among the farm enterprises in Utah as a source of farm cash receipts. In 1949 about 21 million dollars of cash receipts were received from sales of chickens and eggs which represented 13.2 percent of total receipts from farm marketings (table 1). In the same year 17.7 percent of total receipts were derived from cattle and calves, the largest enterprise. Receipts from dairy products represented 15 percent and sheep, lambs, and wool 13.8 percent.

The production of iron in America began in a limited area east of the Alleghenies, centered around Philadelphia, which was also a principal port of entry for foreign iron. As early as 1750, pricing was done on a rudimentary basing point structure. Apparently, all prices on domestic iron were quoted on a Philadelphia base and were higher in the outlying territory where the iron was actually made. The manufacturers absorbed freight in order to move their iron to the central market, where it competed with foreign iron.

Peaches are the predominant tree fruit in Utah. Preliminary estimates for 1947 indicate a crop of 933,000 bushels valued at $1,679,000, which represents approximately 27 percent of the value of the major fruits grown in Utah and 1.2 percent of the value of all agricultural commodities grown in the state (5:23). It should be noted, however, that the 1947 peach crop was somewhat above normal. The estimated average annual production over the 10-year period 1938 to 1947 was 722,000 bushels.

In 1946 the crop of 700,000 bushels was valued at $1,085,000, which was approximately one percent of the value of all agricultural commodities grown in the state 1/. The estimate average annual production over the ten-year period, 1936 to 1945, was 636,000 bushels. Comparison, of dairy breeds in most of the literature is concerned with listing numbers of cows in each breed, milk and, butterfat production and average butterfat test per cow. Table 1 shows the total distribution of dairy cattle throughout the United States and the relative distribution in the various areas. This table shows the wide difference in popularity of the various breeds in different areas. In the North Atlantic States the Holstein is definitely the most popular breed whereas dairymen in the South Atlantic States and in the South Central States prefer the Jersey breed.
