Welfare Implications Of Hdb Policy On The Public Housing Price Gradient, Sock Yong Phang

In Singapore, extensive government intervention in the housing market has resulted in much deviation from assumptions made in the simple neoclassical urban models. The monocentric model of urban structure is extended to incorporate a subsidized public housing market in which the government-determined price gradient is flatter than the private housing price gradients. The propositionthat the utility of public housing households varies inversely with residential location distance from the CBD is empirically tested by estimating net returns to public housing using resale market data. It was found that net returns decreased with distance from the CBD.

With only brief interludes, the Caribbean area has for the past five centuries been a center of global power struggles and internal sociopolitical upheavals of the first order. Those struggles and upheavals show no signs of abating as we move into the twenty-first century. Indeed, there appears to be a consensus among scholars and political leaders in the region that the area now faces problems of crisis proportions.

This is the 1st attempt in modelling fertility, labor force participation and marriage rate using Japanese data. The authors use Butz and Ward's model and extend it to a simultaneous equation system as in the case of Winegarden. Although the estimates obtained by Full Information Maximum Likelihood and Three Stage Least Squares of the model are statistically significant, some of the signs of the estimates are not consistent to a priori predictions. The crux of the model is that an increase in the wages of men has an unambiguous positive effect on fertility, whereas an increase in wages of women …

Spain acquired Louisiana from France in 1763 but was initially unsuccessful in integrating the distant colony into the Spanish commercial system. Encouraged by the colony’s chief financial officer, Intendant Martín Navarro, the Spanish Crown introduced legislation on January 22, 1782 to promote commerce. Free trade was to be permitted for ten years with designated ports in France. The liberal character of the code fostered the growth of numerous merchant companies in New Orleans who found markets for all of Louisiana’s exports in France, England and the French West Indies. It has been two years since we met in Punta del Este, two years since leaders from around the world -- representing nations in all stages of economic development -- agreed to launch the Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiations. since then, our negotiators have been hard at work. They deserve not only credit, but also continuing encouragement. For what came out of the meeting in Punta del Este in September of 1986 was the most comprehensive and ambitious negotiating agenda ever put before the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade.

This article intends to analyse recent structural patterns, development problems and the reasons for rehabilitation of the urban private economy in the People’s Republic of China since 1978. The authors start from the thesis that the so-called “private sector” in China is not comparable with its “out”-differentiated counterpart in Western industrial countries, but is interlaced, in a complex way, with informal, partly illegitimate activities, interpersonal relation-networks (“guanxi”) or economic transactions of state/collective factories. The article illustrates the subordinate situation of the individual labourers in terms of their political regulation by (sometimes restrictive) licence procedures, taxes and fees; resource supply problems …

This paper is a review of the impact of Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) on the economies of ten less developed countries (LDCs). It analysed the performance of some selected macroeconomic variables both before and after SAP was adopted in the selected countries. Based on available data, the several and collective lesson of experience confirmed that the impact of SAP varied not only amongst countries, but also within the various sectors in the same economic entity. Overall, it may be concluded that the broad theoretical objective of SAP was achieved mainly on the external sectors of the countries surveyed, while it …

An important element of the economic integration process in West Africa is the achievement of monetary co-operation which can take various forms such as the clearing house mechanism, European Monetary System Model, Parallel Union Currency Model and Common Currency Area. The paper traced the efforts by ECOW AS at evolving monetary co-operation and also analysed the prospects for Nigeria of a common currency in the West African sub-region. This study is concerned with cooperative business enterprises of small farmers. The topic has been chosen because peasants' association in supply and marketing cooperatives is considered an essential element in rural development. The author's field experience leads him to agree in principle with this assumption. But, as exemplified by Brazil, a variety of factors (ecological, sociohistorical, legal, economic and so forth) may hinder or help the inception and survival of cooperatives.
