It outlines the challenges we face, including overpopulation, pressure upon the land, migration, ecological damage, and social instability. In part two, we present more detailed discussion of the problem of scarcity and how it relates to conflict. The authors in this section argue that the current level of human activity is unsustainable. They demonstrate that population growth in particular affects the natural world and can affect the social order and international …

Economic Crisis And Reform In Bulgaria, 1989-92, Jonathan B. Wight, M. Louise Fox

Economics Faculty Publications

Bulgaria's economy began a deep and prolonged collapse in 1989, exactly one hundred years after the noted Bulgarian novelist Ivan Vazov published his stirring novel opposing the tyranny of the Ottomans and warning of the mistaken road of socialism. The 1989 collapse was partially a reflection of the external political upheavals among Bulgaria's trading partners in Eastern Europe, which were rejecting socialist principles. But it was also a reflection of the weaknesses imbedded in the economy after 30 years of central planning. Political instability within Bulgaria, market reforms, and attempts at privatization contributed further to economic uncertainty resulting in a …

Are Economies Moving In The Direction Of Smaller Firms?, Hong Kian Boon Kelvin

University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics

This paper assesses the present situation of the SME sector in Singapore, and appraise its role in the future. SMEs are a distinct economic entity that often thrive in small niches. SMEs may be defined in various ways, in terms of the country's stage of development and policy objectives. Central Bank Of Nigeria Annual Report And Statement Of Accounts For The Year Ended 31st December 1997, Central Bank Of Nigeria

Public Sector Growth: An Econometric Test Of Wagner's Law, E. A. Essien Sep 1997

Public Sector Growth: An Econometric Test Of Wagner's Law, E. A. Essien

Economic and Financial Review

This study makes use of recent developments in econometric technique to test Wagner s Law of increased state activity according to which Government Expenditure must increase at a rate faster than National Output. It makes use of three different interpretations of the Law, namely, increasing relative share for the public sector in the total economy as per capita real income grows, total government expenditure as a function of real income, and relating per capita total government expenditure to per capita income. In all cases the variables were not cointegrated hence a long run equilibrium relationship could not be established between …
