JPMorgan Chase (JPM) prided itself on having the best risk-management practices in the financial industry, having survived the 2007-09 financial crisis in better shape than many competitors. Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon often spoke of the bank’s “fortress balance sheet.” A keen focus on risk management is vital to JPM’s longevity, as is the case with all highly leveraged financial institutions. Value at Risk (VaR) is one of the most commonly used ways to measure and monitor market risk. At JPMorgan Chase (JPM), very large derivative positions established by Bruno Iksil in the Synthetic Credit Portfolio (SCP) caused the bank’s Chief Investment Office (CIO) to exceed its VaR limit for four days in a row in January 2012. In response, the CIO changed to a new VaR model on January 30, which appeared to immediately reduce VaR by half. The international economic trends of globalization and neoliberalism have exposed and enabled the exploitation of Mexican workers, especially women in the maquiladora garment industry. During the 1950s, globalization gave rise to the new international division of labor and transnational corporations (TNCs) that have offshored labor-intensive phases of production to developing countries, many of which have pursued export-led industrialization. This thesis comprises of three essays on economic development and human capital formation in India using the Young Lives Survey Data. The first essay analyses the effect of family health shocks on nutrition and cognitive development. The results from the essay shows that mother’s illness, father’s death and illness of both parents have a significant negative effect on the child’s nutrition. While mother’s illness and father’s illness have a significant negative effect on the cognitive development of the child. Life and general insurance companies must meet the financial health level requirements contained in the Financial Services Authority Regulation Number 71 of 2016, namely sovability, technical reserves, investment adequacy, equity, guarantee funds, and other provisions relating to financial health. The Gross Premium Evaluation (GPV) method is one way to calculate premium reserves.
