Afghanistan's Economic Prospects After Soviet Occupation And Jihad (Islamic Armed Struggle), 1979-1993, Abdul Haq Amiri

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The main purpose of this thesis is to evaluate Afghanistan's future economic prospects especially in the aftermath of Russian occupation and the prolonged Islamist armed resistance by the peoples of Afghanistan. To achieve this goal, it is, however, necessary to provide some historical background about the country and to review the nation's economic progress before the onset of the Russian war (1979-1989) . While the presentation of this thesis has a historical dimension, it investigates and evaluates the consequences of communist rule and Soviet occupation. The thesis contains several parts including a conclusion and a policy recommendation. However, the problems …

Teacher Gender And Pay Effects On Ohio Student Performance, Robert Clark Gibson Jan 1993

Teacher Gender And Pay Effects On Ohio Student Performance, Robert Clark Gibson

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This investigation attempts to see if Card and Kreuger's retrospective findings that a significant positive relationship between higher ratios of female to male teachers and later increased earnings of workers extends to current test results of Ohio School Districts. One possible explanation for increased earnings later in life to be associated with a higher ratio of female teachers is that lack of alternative opportunities for females in the labor market before 1966 made it possible to hire more effective female teachers for a given salary. If the same conditions hold districts with higher ratios of teachers on their staff would …

Women In The Military: What Are The Real Costs?, Kristin Lynn Johnson Jan 1993

Women In The Military: What Are The Real Costs?, Kristin Lynn Johnson

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

With the recent change in social policy allowing women to enter combat roles:, the issue of women in the military has gained much attention. Although women have served the U.S. in every war since the Revolutionary War (although not always in uniform), the contemporary debate about women in the military is being addressed again in the press and on Capitol Hill.

This project addresses the cost of having women in the U.S. military. Specifically, I will compare the relative cost of men and women serving in the armed forces. My hypothesis is that, today, the marginal cost of sustaining a …

Domestic Monopoly, Quotas & Contestable Rents, William Rieber Jan 1993

Domestic Monopoly, Quotas & Contestable Rents, William Rieber

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

In this article, a specific example is given to illustrate that rent seeking can raise welfare under full seeking in general equilibrium: an import quota is levied in the presence of domestic monopoly in the import competing industry. An import quota is considered instead of an import tariff since a tariff confers no market power on the local monopolist. The monopolist still faces a perfectly elastic demand, corresponding now to the world price plus tariff. The introduction of monopoly does not add another distortion to the economy, which is necessary if full rent seeking is to be welfare improving. But …

Dayton Power And Light Company Steam Sales And Customer Forecast, Patrick D. Carus Jan 1993

Dayton Power And Light Company Steam Sales And Customer Forecast, Patrick D. Carus

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The Dayton Power and Light Company requested that an econometric model be created to forecast steam sales and customers. The Company currently uses econometric models for its electric sales, electric customer, and peak usage forecasts. The Company also uses econometric models to forecast natural gas sales, customers, peak day, and hourly usage. The steam business did not have a forecasting model that was easy to work with, and which produced reasonable results. The goal of this project was to build an econometric model which could be used to forecast the Company's steam sales and customers in order to bring consistency …

Transactions, Costs, And The Supply Of Low-Income Rental Housing: The Case Of Section 8 Rental Certificates And Vouchers In Dayton, Ohio, Michele Dawn Mccarren Jan 1993

Transactions, Costs, And The Supply Of Low-Income Rental Housing: The Case Of Section 8 Rental Certificates And Vouchers In Dayton, Ohio, Michele Dawn Mccarren

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

Either private markets or publicly-subsidized programs can provide low-income housing. Federal programs such as the Section 8 low-income housing assistance program combines public funds with the existing private housing stock to provide housing for low-income families. Tenants, (or consumers) receive rent subsidies through either vouchers or rental certificates. The housing authority pays the voucher or rental certificate amount directly to the landlord each month.

Transaction costs, defined as the costs of negotiating, creating and enforcing contracts, determine in part the incentives for landlords to participate in government programs. Costs such as time, increased investment to maintain government housing quality standards, …

A Study Of Childcare Issues Affecting The Nursing Profession In A Major Southwestern City, James Keith Blake Jan 1993

A Study Of Childcare Issues Affecting The Nursing Profession In A Major Southwestern City, James Keith Blake

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

As more women enter the work force, there is an increased need for adequate childcare. There are many potential benefits to employers when employees are satisfied with quality of care their children are receiving. Some employers have opted to provide some form of childcare assistance, ranging from simple referral services to on-site childcare facilities.

The need for childcare is especially prominent in the healthcare profession, given the predominance of women in nursing and the need for nurses on all shifts.

This study was designed to explore job satisfaction and childcare issues among nursing and healthcare professionals. The study was undertaken …

Urban Revitalization: Is Dayton On The Right Track?, Kirby Clark Jan 1993

Urban Revitalization: Is Dayton On The Right Track?, Kirby Clark

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The purpose of this paper is to review the steps taken by cities to turn their declining economies into rejuvenated, revitalized and prosperous localities. There are as many approaches to revitalization as there are cities and success is dependent upon the focused efforts of the community, private and public. Nevertheless, some programs are much more successful than others. I have attempted to focus on the more successful programs to see if there are elements that can be applied to other cities such as Dayton.
