The Economics Of Thought, S. Marie Johnson Jun 2017

The Economics Of Thought, S. Marie Johnson

Best Integrated Writing

Johnson takes an economic perspective on the First Amendment. Johnson argues that freedom of speech encourages the competition and flow of ideas which, in turn, allows for an increase of knowledge about competing ideologies.

The CCI-N stood at 102.5 in April but fell to 100.4 during May, which is only slightly above the neutral value of 100.0. The outlook of Nebraska businesses remained very strong. The Business Confidence Index – Nebraska (BCI-N) rose to 110.2 in May, above its April value of 109.1 and well above the neutral value. Business confidence has been very strong in Nebraska during the first five months of 2017. When asked about …

Sewing Garments, Sowing Lives: Two Generations Of Migrant Workers' Back And Forth To The Chinese Coast, Alice Tzou Jun 2017

Sewing Garments, Sowing Lives: Two Generations Of Migrant Workers' Back And Forth To The Chinese Coast, Alice Tzou

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Migrant workers in China have been at the center of popular news media and scholarly attention for three decades, since they started to migrate to work in factories on the coast in the post-1978 Economic Reform era. As western and central China has developed and work opportunities have arisen in these migrant-sending regions, internal migrants have started to return home. Push and pull factors of internal migration have been reversed. Poverty and lack of job opportunities used to be the push factors; they are now replaced by new push factors—long hours of work and long-distance travel to and from the …

The Price Revolution In The Ottoman Context: Economic Upheaval In The Sixteenth Century, Dylan Lawrence Russell Jun 2017

The Price Revolution In The Ottoman Context: Economic Upheaval In The Sixteenth Century, Dylan Lawrence Russell

Middle Eastern Communities and Migrations Student Research Paper Series

The inflationary pressures of the Price Revolution had an impact on Ottoman agricultural organization, state finances, industry, and the growth of corruption. This analysis will examine the causes, effects, and scope of inflation in the sixteenth century. Inflation alone did not cause these drastic changes, as other very significant developments also contributed to the turbulent economic environment. However inflation did, in fact, influence many basic transformations, including shifts in wealth, power, and the enrichment of specific social classes at the expense of others.

Testing Validity Of Observed Indicators Of Local Content Policy In Nigeria: Evidence From Four-Factor Measurement Model, Abdulkabir N. Adedeji, Muhammad O. Lawan, Shaufiq F. Sidique Jun 2017

Testing Validity Of Observed Indicators Of Local Content Policy In Nigeria: Evidence From Four-Factor Measurement Model, Abdulkabir N. Adedeji, Muhammad O. Lawan, Shaufiq F. Sidique

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This paper tests validity property of the indicators that measured local content policy (LCP) in Nigeria’s oil sector. Survey data were obtained for the test, using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) method. The results obtained from a four-factor measurement model confirmed the LCP indicators to be valid. This reflects that the policy can achieve its developmental targets on local value creation with particular reference to increased local firms’ participation, backward linkages, and job creation in Nigeria’s oil sector. Hence, government should focus on effective implementation and compliance of the policy rather than “labour clause” as contained in the local content Act. …

The Impact Of Trade On Economic Growth In Ecowas Countries: Evidence From Panel Data, Milton Iyoha, Ajan Okim Jun 2017

The Impact Of Trade On Economic Growth In Ecowas Countries: Evidence From Panel Data, Milton Iyoha, Ajan Okim

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

The poor economic performance and growth of ECOWAS economies have become so challenging and this has necessitated research and discussions. Experts have argued that the relationship between trade and economic growth in the ECOWAS region is unclear and the question of whether trade promotes growth and development is controversial. In this paper, an attempt is made to analyse the impact of trade on economic growth both from a theoretical perspective and using econometric evidence from ECOWAS countries. In particular, an attempt is made to econometrically test the hypothesis of a positive relationship between trade and growth in ECOWAS countries during …

An Application Of Asymmetric Garch Models On Volatility Of Banks Equity In Nigeria’S Stock Market, Omorogbe J. Asemota, Uchenna C. Ekejiuba Jun 2017

An Application Of Asymmetric Garch Models On Volatility Of Banks Equity In Nigeria’S Stock Market, Omorogbe J. Asemota, Uchenna C. Ekejiuba

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This paper examines the volatility of banks equity weekly returns for six banks (coded B1 to B6) using GARCH models. Results reveal the presence of ARCH effect in B2 and B3 equity returns. In addition, the estimated models could not find evidence of leverage effect. On evaluating the estimated models using standard criteria, EGARCH (1, 1) and CGARCH (1, 1) model in Student’s t-distribution are adjudged the best volatility models for B2 and B3 respectively. The study recommends that in modelling stock market volatility, variants of GARCH models and alternative error distribution should be considered for robustness of results. We …

Modelling Inflation Rate Volatility In Nigeria With Structural Breaks, Ismail O. Fasanya, Oluwasegun B. Adekoya Jun 2017

Modelling Inflation Rate Volatility In Nigeria With Structural Breaks, Ismail O. Fasanya, Oluwasegun B. Adekoya

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This study compares the performance of GARCH-Type models in modelling inflation volatility in Nigeria covering the period 1995M01 to 2016M10. In the paper, we provide two main innovations: (i) we analyze inflation rate of two pronounced consumer prices indices namely headline and core consumer price indices using the Augmented DickeyFuller break point test which allow for structural breaks in the data series; and (ii) the method is modified to include both symmetric and asymmetric volatility models. The empirical examination observes evidence of volatility persistence in the consumer price indices, but only headline is consistent with leverage effects. Thus, applying one-modelfits-all …

Agricultural Sector Credit And Output Relationship In Nigeria: Evidence From Nonlinear Ardl1, Oloronsola E. Olowofeso, Adeyemi A. Adeboye, Valli T. Adejo, Kufre J. Bassey, Ochoche Abraham Jun 2017

Agricultural Sector Credit And Output Relationship In Nigeria: Evidence From Nonlinear Ardl1, Oloronsola E. Olowofeso, Adeyemi A. Adeboye, Valli T. Adejo, Kufre J. Bassey, Ochoche Abraham

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This paper investigates the relationship between credit to agriculture and agricultural output in Nigeria by means of nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) model using a time series data from 1992Q1 to 2015Q4. Results show no evidence of asymmetry in the impact of credit to output growth in the agricultural sector (positive and negative changes) in the short-run, but different equilibrium relationships exist in the long-run. The dynamic adjustments show that the cumulative agricultural output growth is mostly attracted by the impact of the positive changes in credit to agriculture with a lag of four quarters of the prediction horizon. This …

Exploring The Questionable Academic Practice Of Conference Paper Double Dipping, Krista B. Lewellyn, William Q. Judge, Adam Smith Jun 2017

Exploring The Questionable Academic Practice Of Conference Paper Double Dipping, Krista B. Lewellyn, William Q. Judge, Adam Smith

Management Faculty Publications

We develop a conceptual framework and provide empirical evidence that helps to explain why management scholars submit the same paper to more than one scholarly conference, a practice referred to as "double dipping." Drawing from general strain theory,we find that certain features of the social and national institutional context in which these scholars are embedded provides motivation for and facilitates rationalization of engagement in the double-dipping practice. Specifically, our results show that the incidence of conference paper double dipping is greater for junior scholars and for those currently affiliated with research-intensive universities. We also find that authors who received their …

Exchange Rate Misalignment Under Different Exchange Rate Regimes In Nigeria, Sunday N. Essien, Stephen O.U. Uyaebo, Babatunde S. Omotosho Jun 2017

Exchange Rate Misalignment Under Different Exchange Rate Regimes In Nigeria, Sunday N. Essien, Stephen O.U. Uyaebo, Babatunde S. Omotosho

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This study examines the dynamics of naira real exchange rate (RER) during the period 2000Q1 – 2016Q1 as well as the extent to which it deviated from its long run equilibrium path. To achieve this, we adopt the Behavioural Equilibrium Exchange Rate (BEER) model approach and incorporate the effects of an endogenously determined breakpoint in the cointegrating vector of the RER model. We found empirical support for the existence of a long-run relationship between RER and its determinants that is subject to a structural break in 2011Q1. Also, model results showed that exchange rate policy, productivity and interest rate differentials …

Testing For The Stability And Persistence Of The Phillips Curve For Nigeria, Chuku Chuku, Johnson Atan, Felix Obioesio Jun 2017

Testing For The Stability And Persistence Of The Phillips Curve For Nigeria, Chuku Chuku, Johnson Atan, Felix Obioesio

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

In this study, we describe the problem of testing for the stability and persistence of the Phillips curve for Nigeria when there are nonstationarities in the marginal distribution of the regressors. We test for unknown break dates using the 𝑆𝑢𝑝𝐹,𝐴𝑣𝑔𝐹 and 𝐸𝑥𝑝𝐹 approaches. After reviewing the relevant asymptotic distribution theory we replicate Hansen’s fixed-regressor bootstraping scheme, which shows that Andrews’ tabulated critical values for the test statistics are oversized, and are not robust to the presence of nonstationarities in the marginal distribution of the regressors. In search of alternative bootstraping schemes, we experiment with the sieve, wild, and Rademacher schemes …

Liquidity In A Market For Unique Assets: Specified Pool And To-Be-Announced Trading In The Mortgage-Backed Securities Market, Pengjie Gao, Paul Schultz, Zhaogang Song Jun 2017

Liquidity In A Market For Unique Assets: Specified Pool And To-Be-Announced Trading In The Mortgage-Backed Securities Market, Pengjie Gao, Paul Schultz, Zhaogang Song

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Agency mortgage-backed securities (MBS) trade simultaneously in a market for specified pools (SPs) and in the to-be-announced (TBA) forward market. TBA trading creates liquidity by allowing thousands of different MBS to be traded in a handful of TBA contracts. SPs that are eligible to be traded as TBAs have significantly lower trading costs than other SPs. We present evidence that TBA eligibility, in addition to characteristics of TBA-eligible SPs, lowers trading costs. We show that dealers hedge SP inventory with TBA trades, and they are more likely to prearrange trades in SPs that are difficult to hedge.

Industry Integration And Stock Price Synchronicity, Hao Cheng, Kian Guan Lim, Tien Foo Sing, Long Wang Jun 2017

Industry Integration And Stock Price Synchronicity, Hao Cheng, Kian Guan Lim, Tien Foo Sing, Long Wang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper provides an alternative explanation of the negative relationship between price synchronicity and proprietary right protection that are uncorrelated to the information hypothesis. Using empirical data for 40 countries, we show that stock market volatility and firm size have significant impact on stock price synchronicity. We find significant correlations of international R2 disparity with industry structure integrations. The derived industry integration indices that capture industry correlations significantly explain cross-sectional and temporal variations in price synchronicity. The results imply that tighter industry integration leads to higher R2, and also explain away the property rights factor found in the information hypothesis.

Culture, Inner-City Education And Improving Economic Growth In Birmingham, Alabama, Leroy Abrahams May 2017

Culture, Inner-City Education And Improving Economic Growth In Birmingham, Alabama, Leroy Abrahams

Capstone Collection

Perhaps the greatest reminder of the economic inequities in American society is the drastic deficiencies in educational outcomes, based on class and race. Birmingham, Alabama, vividly portrays this reality. Families with means send their children to private schools and/or concentrate in the suburbs, leaving largely poor, and oftentimes, predominantly minority in densely populated crime-ridden areas with suboptimal schooling. The schooling patterns are clearly reflected in the economic outcomes, though Black are a majority in the city they are vastly underrepresented in the middle to upper middle class, while grossly overrepresented among those in poverty. These inequities are often mirrored in …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: May 24, 2017, Eric Thompson May 2017

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: May 24, 2017, Eric Thompson

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) 1 fell by 0.88% during April of 2017. The decline followed three months of rapid increase in January through March, implying a moderation in the outlook for the Nebraska economy in late 2017. Among the components of the indicator, business expectations were strong during April while the value of the U.S. dollar fell, which is a positive sign for Nebraska’s export-oriented businesses. However, manufacturing hours, building permits and airline passenger counts all declined during April, while initial claims for unemployment insurance rose.

Is Google Search Behavior Related To Volatility? Incorporating Google Trends Data Into A Garch Model For Equity Volatility, Timothy De Silva May 2017

Is Google Search Behavior Related To Volatility? Incorporating Google Trends Data Into A Garch Model For Equity Volatility, Timothy De Silva

Undergraduate Economic Review

Intuitively, one would expect that internet search volume would contain valuable information about investor sentiment for a company. With the development of new data sources, such as Google Trends, this relationship can be more easily and objectively examined. This paper seeks to examine the relationship between a company’s stock price volatility and its Google search volume. A small cross-section of twenty companies is considered, and the goal of this paper is to demonstrate the power of Google Trends data in hope of initiating further research. Using a conventional GARCH framework for financial market volatility, an economically and statistically significant contemporaneous …

A Dual-Role Analysis Of Game Form Misconception And Cognitive Bias In Financial And Economic Decision Making, Chinedum D. Nwadiora May 2017

A Dual-Role Analysis Of Game Form Misconception And Cognitive Bias In Financial And Economic Decision Making, Chinedum D. Nwadiora

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The endowment and the framing effect are widely examined cognitive biases. The experimental economics literature, using choice data gathered through an elicitation device, commonly finds evidence of these biases. Recent work by Cason & Plott (2014) shows that the interpretation of choice data as consistent with biases related non-standard preference theory could also be consistent with confusion or misconception of the game type used to elucidate preferences. I use the Cason and Plott card auction framework to analyze offers of buyers and sellers in an experimental setting with subjects from the University of New Orleans simulating 97 sellers and 90 …

Essays On Financial Intermediation, Yong Kyu Gam May 2017

Essays On Financial Intermediation, Yong Kyu Gam

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

Chapter 1 investigates a regulatory spillover effect of the Basel III liquidity standard on the real economy through a series of difference-in-difference estimations. Since the Basel Committee’s official endorsement for the new liquidity regulation in December 2010, a bank exposed to high liquidity risk reduced its loan proportion significantly, making a negative real effect on its surrounding economy via a bank-lending-channel. The new regulation also induced a bank with a weak liquid balance sheet to raise its deposit rate aggressively, generating a liquidity problem in a nearby local bank through a deposit-competition-channel and ultimately curbing an expansion of the local …

Do Marketing Strategies Impact Condom Sales In Uganda?, Meyhar Mohammed May 2017

Do Marketing Strategies Impact Condom Sales In Uganda?, Meyhar Mohammed

Master's Theses

What attracts people to buy condoms? HIV/AIDS remain one of the biggest health dangers of the world, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. A lot of efforts have been pursued in the past two decades to drastically reduce prevalence of HIV and increase awareness about preventive mechanisms. In order to prevent relapse of success achieved so far, it is important to recognize transformation of consumer behavior due to growth in social networks, education and awareness over time. There are a lot of behavioral triggers captured by social marketing interventions in the field of public health. In an attempt to investigate the role …

Disrespecting The Minimum Wage: How States Limit The Opportunity For Restaurant Workers To Support Themselves, Samantha Pereira May 2017

Disrespecting The Minimum Wage: How States Limit The Opportunity For Restaurant Workers To Support Themselves, Samantha Pereira

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

This paper examines the inequality in the restaurant industry in America. It focuses specifically on the tipped minimum wages in different states compared to the real minimum wage and looks into the gender and racial inequality present in restaurants. The first section analyzes the history of tipping and what it has become in the United States. The paper then moves to describe different struggles that tipped workers in the restaurant industry have to face. The paper also discusses different arguments to raising the tipped minimum wage and compares states with a tipped minimum wage and states without a tipped minimum …

Jenny Slater, Youth And Disability - A Challenge To Mr. Reasonable (2015), Murad Canbulut

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

As Dholakia and Atik (2016) emphasize in the opening article of MGDR, we can “live with” labels such as advanced and emerging, rich, mid-income and poor, ancient and modern (and postmodern), Third World and First World. In addition to these labels, this review brings out labels and dualities such as able and disabled, reasonable and unreasonable. Introducing disability studies to the marketing field, this review analyzes Jenny Slater’s book which helps us gain a critical perspective on disability research.

Extending The Marketing Dialog On Poverty, Ravi S. Achrol, Philip Kotler May 2017

Extending The Marketing Dialog On Poverty, Ravi S. Achrol, Philip Kotler

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

We appreciate Professor Aneel Karnani’s contributions to the marketing dialog on poverty and our article “Marketing’s Lost Frontier: The Poor” (Achrol and Kotler 2016). We do not necessarily disagree with some of his criticisms but rather see them as an opportunity for expanding the discussion of marketing’s role in reducing world poverty. In this response, we revisit and elaborate on Social Marketing for the bottom-of-the-pyramid (BOP) and Distributed Production-Consumption view presented in the original article. These new marketing models – focused on distributing economic opportunity, income and standards of life to local communities – can substantially displace the giant centralized …

Marketing And Poverty Alleviation: The Perspective Of The Poor, Aneel Karnani May 2017

Marketing And Poverty Alleviation: The Perspective Of The Poor, Aneel Karnani

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

The best way to reduce poverty is to focus on raising the productive capacity – not the consumption capacity – of the poor. This implies poverty reduction efforts must focus on two dimensions: raising income of the poor, and providing the poor access to basic public services (such as public health, education, sanitation, infrastructure and security). First, the best way to raise income is to create employment opportunities for the poor. The private sector is clearly the best engine for job creation; the government can play a useful facilitating role. Second, governments are responsible for, and should be held accountable …

Adam Smith, Market And Social Change: Then And Now, Dominique Bouchet May 2017

Adam Smith, Market And Social Change: Then And Now, Dominique Bouchet

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

Adam Smith (1723-1790) provided us with a remarkable synthesis of the economic and political ideas of his time and developed a conceptual system to analyze social interactions that mattered for the wealth of nations. He proposed a radically different roadmap for the future development of the society he lived in. The fact that his original analyses were rooted in a given historical context and were founded on a well thought-through conceptual system should not be ignored. The dribs and drabs of Adam Smith ideas that are bandied about, particularly to support ‘free’ market and anti-regulatory policies, are a far cry …

The Fifth Epoch: Socio-Economic Approach To Sustainable Capitalism, David M. Boje, Yue Cai Hillon May 2017

The Fifth Epoch: Socio-Economic Approach To Sustainable Capitalism, David M. Boje, Yue Cai Hillon

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

The purpose of this conceptual essay is to challenge the inevitability of living with the destructive beast of speculative market economics in the 4th epoch of global capitalism. We are facing an existential socio-ecological threat from the short-term excesses of financial capitalism, a socially irresponsible form that consumes without producing value and without bearing entrepreneurial risk, benefitting only the few. The fate of roughly 90% of humanity hangs in the balance. The primary contribution of this paper proposes a 5th epoch of capitalism, inspired by Savall and Zardet’s socio-economic and sustainable approach that restores human potential and value …
