My senior capstone project aims to spread awareness about the Fairview Training Center, located outside of Salem, Oregon. This institute stood for decades as a home to individuals with mental health struggles. My project also strives to provide the public and local community with stories from former patients, seeking to educate the public about the events that took place at the institution. Through this capstone project, background information is provided, and the voices of the survivors can also be heard by the audience.

This data slice compares adolescent ADHD diagnoses across racial-ethnic groups. It shows large racial/ethnic differences, with the highest rates among Non-Hispanic (NH) Alaskan Native/American Indian children, followed by NH White, NH Black, and NH Other Race children. Rates were substantially lower for Hispanic and NH Asian.

Claude McKay’s recently published 1932 novel Romance in Marseille presents a wide variety of survival strategies practiced by many diasporic Africans. Bias-based bullying relating to disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity has extremely detrimental effects on the victim’s school climate perceptions, attendance records, and academic achievement. This study used a cross-sectional research design to compare the self-reported school climate perceptions, attendance habits, and grades of student victims of disability-based bias-related bullying and sexual orientation- and gender identity-based bias-related bullying using secondary data from the California Healthy Kids Survey. Participants (N = 713,107) filled out the California Healthy Kids Survey self-report surveys in the years 2017, 2018, and 2019. In this article, we draw on DisCrit to critically analyze how a group of early childhood educators approached assistance with young children of color with disabilities in a Head Start inclusion classroom. Using examples from data collected over one school year, we demonstrate how child-centered assistance advances justice for young children of color with disabilities who are often subjected to a surveillance culture in schools. We critique assistance that aligns with the medical model of disability and aims to change young children of color with disabilities to conform to ableist, racist expectations of schooling. There is currently a gap in literature regarding the transition from pediatric to adult healthcare for adolescents with chronic conditions, particularly relating to mental health and autonomy. This study aims to address this gap by looking specifically through the lens of parental autonomy-granting. This study uses data from 8,783 individuals in the AddHealth dataset to identify whether parental autonomy-granting has a mediating role between chronic health conditions and depressive symptomology, and to measure if adolescents with chronic conditions reported higher levels of depressive symptoms than their healthy counterparts. Racial-ethnic minorities with intellectual disability experience compound disadvantage because of the intersection of their disability and racial minority group status. This research brief examines whether birth cohort trends (from the early-1900s to late-1990s) in educational attainment among adults with intellectual disability differed among non-Hispanic Whites, non-Hispanic Blacks, and Hispanics. Results show that although all racial-ethnic groups saw a substantial increase in the probability of attaining a high school degree or more over subsequent birth cohorts, the timing and amount of education attained varied across racial-ethnic groups.

The rate of unemployment for people with disabilities continues to rise greatly above that of people without disabilities. The issue seems to be exacerbated by employer biases and concerns which are not supported in the face of evidence. A lack of employer education on disability related subjects causes this misconception among both employers and the public as a whole. To resolve the underlying problem of miseducation, an increase in the self-identification of people with disabilities is necessary to provide researchers with data to assist in the formation of a revised curriculum.

Remaining community-dwelling is a goal for most aging adults; however, this may necessitate assistance from caregivers. To reduce burden and improve adult autonomy, recent technological advancements have provided various supports. These advancements may improve quality of life (QOL) while also enhancing psychological/physical well-being for adults and caregivers. To investigate relationships between technology, QOL, and caregiver burden, needs assessments with focus groups were utilized. Four older adult and two caregiver focus groups were conducted. Objective: This article summarizes the individual, systemic, and collective challenges and opportunities presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, based on 16 videos solicited by the National Center on Advancing Person-Centered Practices and Systems (NCAPPS) and submitted by NCAPPS collaborators during the first six months of the pandemic.

Method: Informed by participatory action approaches and content analysis, we describe common themes in a series of 16 videos solicited by NCAPPS from subject matter experts with professional and lived experience of disability and human services systems.

Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) die younger than those without such disabilities in the U.S. This data slice introduces a new data tracking tool that shows age-at-death trends for adults with intellectual disability, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other rare developmental disabilities, as well as those without IDD. The website, which will be updated annually, allows users to compare age-at-death patterns for each IDD group by U.S. state, year, biological sex, and race-ethnicity.

Causes of death are often inaccurately reported on death certificates for individuals with intellectual disability. This research brief examines whether uncertainty surrounding the death is associated with the inaccurate reporting of intellectual disability as the underlying cause of death. Results show that increased uncertainty surrounding deaths, especially in instances of choking related deaths, increases the probability that intellectual disability is inaccurately reported as the underlying cause of death.

Recognition of the need for students with disabilities to receive free and appropriate education was brought to the forefront with the passage of Public Law 93 – 112, Rehabilitation Act in 1973. In 1975 Public Law 94-142, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act was enacted requiring all schools to develop and provide a free, appropriate public education for all children and youth with disabilities in the regular classroom to ensure an appropriate education. The neurodiversity community was envisioned as an inclusive and welcoming space for individuals with neurological conditions such as ADHD, autism, Tourette’s Syndrome, giftedness, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, intellectual disability, NVLD and related diagnoses. The underlying premise of neurodiversity is that people present with various neurological differences and there is value in acknowledging and accepting these differences.
