Beyond Broaching: Existential Meaning Making Of Blackness Within Therapeutic Work, Monica M. Cooper
Educational Specialist, 2020-current
This integrated literature review explores the mental health field’s contribution towards the subjugation of Black people through the means of researching human existence that affirmed white supremacy and bolstered the dehumanization of Blackness. This paper also explores how this negligent behavior on the part of the mental health field trivialized the deep pain and suffering experienced by Black people and provided the means to further dehumanize Blackness. The author provides frameworks to better understand the existential trauma experienced by the Black collective due to racism being embedded in societal narratives and history with the help of the mental health field. …

The Fetishization Of Asian American Women: Where We Are And Where To Go, Genevieve Askin
Educational Specialist, 2020-current
Women of color in the United States suffer from hyper sexualization and fetishization, and Asian American (AA) women are no different. These racial microaggressions and normalized expressions of oppression based on both race/ethnicity and gender contribute to a distinct marginalization that women of color experience. This paper seeks to 1) explore the unique layers of oppression that AA women face, including combating the model minority myth, westernized beauty standards, and fetishization, as well as 2) address the difference in reception between the Stop Asian Hate movement and Black Lives Matter, while defining and critiquing the whitewashing of this field in …

Trauma Healing With The Neurosequential Model Of Therapy And Bal-A-Vis-X, Becky Johnston
Educational Specialist, 2020-current
Stigma related to childhood trauma is shifting with the help of advancements in the understanding of neurobiology and interventions that are proving to be effective for healing. There are immense costs and consequences for survivors of childhood trauma and their loved ones that were not so long ago considered irrelevant and the notion that kids bounce back from adversity was previously popular in the psychological community (Perry & Szalavitz, 2017). The broad strokes of Dr. Bruce Perry’s clinical intervention model, The Neurosequential Model of Therapy (NMT) describes a trauma-sensitive, sequential approach to changing the stress response within mental health counseling. …

Exploring The Role Of Defense Styles In The Relationship Between Childhood Adversity And Vicarious Trauma, Stewart Nafziger
Exploring The Role Of Defense Styles In The Relationship Between Childhood Adversity And Vicarious Trauma, Stewart Nafziger
Dissertations, 2020-current
The National Council for Behavioral Health (2013) estimated that the majority of clients in public behavioral healthcare settings have experienced trauma. Providing high quality mental health services to clients who suffer from traumatic stress can take a toll on the professional (Trippany et al., 2004). Vicarious trauma is a unique form of traumatic stress that results from treating clients who suffer from traumatic stress (McCann & Pearlman, 1990). It has been recognized by the American Counseling Association (2011) as an occupation hazard. Yet, not all professionals who treat clients suffering from traumatic stress develop it. There is a lack of …

Intergenerational trauma involves a traumatic event that began years prior to the current generation and has impacted the ways in which individuals cope with and heal from trauma. Intergenerational trauma can negatively impact families and individuals as a result of unresolved emotions and thoughts about a traumatic event. Motherhood has always been an important role for Black women (Green, 1990) and although all women face challenges in their role as mothers, Black women are faced with unique tasks that their White counterparts are not. Black women are often the transmitter of culture to their children and frequently set the example …

Adolescent Trauma: The Effects On Development And Interventions To Help, Allison Skrentny
Counselor Education Capstones
Trauma is something that can impact everyone in some way. Experiencing trauma at a young age can be even harder for some as they have not had the chance to develop fully socially, emotionally, mentally, and physically. As counselors and educators, it is extremely important to be trauma informed and be able to ensure that the student has necessary supports and resources in place to ensure that they are having all their needs met and able to work through their trauma. Knowing where a child is at developmentally and the obstacles, they may face through their adolescent years make it …

An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Of The Lived Experience Of Parental Caregivers For Children With Severe Epidermolysis Bullosa, Michael J. Valentine
Theses and Dissertations
Providing care to child with a chronic, rare diseases has been identified as a major life stressor with a myriad of negative physical and mental health consequences. These stresses have previously been found to create burden that may impair caregiving efforts and increase the risk of mortality for both the caregiver and affected child. Many rare diseases affect children. It is not known how caregiver burden and the source of stress varies by disease. Qualitative methods have been used to understand caregiver experience with the rare disease, epidermolysis bullosa (EB), but no such studies have occurred in the United States. …

This literature review explores the problem, causes of the problem in the form of barriers, and solutions to accessing mental health resources in rural areas of the United States. Abstract
An examination of the issues of youth who are experiencing homelessness is crucial in supporting this vulnerable population. Public schools have a responsibility to assist these students in their academic, career, and social-emotional development. Homelessness can be identified through many characteristics and identified needs. It is key for school counselors to recognize these characteristics and consider the impacts that the school and resources can make on the student’s life. Throughout the paper, the causes of homelessness, potential …

Developing Professional Behaviors During Residency: The Shared Experiences Of Resident In Counseling Supervisors, Jennifer D. Gobble
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The development of the counselor does not end with graduation from a counselor education program. As a part of the licensure process, counselors must complete their post-graduate state residency requirements. As a result, supervisors play an essential role in the training and licensure of residents in counseling. Prior research has mainly focused on professional development and dispositions of counselors, but little research has been conducted in the role supervisors play in developing professional behavior outside of the counseling room. With the counselor’s professionalism and behavior being crucial to client welfare, therapeutic alliance, and overall trust in the profession, there is …

Six participants, ages 21-25, male and female, white or Hispanic college students yielded information demonstrating that the parenting factors mutually interacted with one another. If the parent or parents had a positive impact in the modeling factor, the same was true for attachment and style. A fourth focal point was whether the emerging young adult would seek out a community of faith of his or …

Therefore, it is important that counselors understand the types of coping strategies that can help manage stress and self-care, including religion and prayer. The works of Carl Jung, William James, and Poloma and Pendleton present the importance of religion and religious activities, including prayer. In addition, the literature reviewed indicates that religion and religious activities, including prayer, can be a positive aspect in the lives of others to combat emotional and physical issues.
