Ethical Art Waste: Examining Resource Management In The Art Studio, Amanda Peavey May 2019

Ethical Art Waste: Examining Resource Management In The Art Studio, Amanda Peavey

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This paper highlights the lack of education about production and disposal of art materials within the field of art therapy. Failure to educate clinicians creates ethical problems when hazardous materials are used in sessions unknowingly. This paper is grounded in environmental studies and chemical management to supplement the art therapy field’s lack of research and commentary. The literature is dedicated to educating the reader about the hazardous nature of materials, issues surrounding regulations of chemicals involved in production, and consumerism in relation to waste processing. The research data was collected from a community engagement project: an educational presentation was offered …

Development Of An Art Therapy Method For The Prevention And Treatment Of Vicarious Trauma, Leanna Pai Apr 2019

Development Of An Art Therapy Method For The Prevention And Treatment Of Vicarious Trauma, Leanna Pai

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Modern developments in the field of mental health care have greatly increased understanding of vicarious trauma and its impacts on the helping professions. However, the prevalence of vicarious trauma symptoms highlights the need for additional research into prevention and treatment. First responders, critical healthcare workers, and mental health professionals are at particularly high risk for compassion fatigue, burn out, and other symptoms of vicarious trauma as they work closely with traumatized populations. The high incidence of vicarious trauma in individual helping professionals can have immense consequences that ultimately limit quality systems of care available to the general public. This thesis …

Medical Trauma: Developing A Model For Medical Traumatic Stress, Audrey Ryan Mar 2019

Medical Trauma: Developing A Model For Medical Traumatic Stress, Audrey Ryan

Lesley University Community of Scholars Day

The working title of my dissertation is Betrayal of the Body: Medical Diagnosis as a Trauma. This exploration of the concept of medical trauma is focused on how people with a new medical diagnosis experience and perceive it as an acute or prolonged trauma. Because medical diagnoses are quite common, and many illnesses are curable, treatable, or short-term in nature, they are often times not perceived as traumatic events. However, many illnesses are chronic, incurable and life-threatening, or life-shortening such as cancer, autoimmune diseases (e.g. multiple sclerosis) and neurological disorders (e.g. Parkinson’s, ALS). In these specific instances, a medical …

The panelists participated in an interdisciplinary course, Disability Studies, in which students chose to research these topics for their social action projects and papers. Panelists who see themselves as allies and/or self-identify as disabled share their research, personal experiences, and interviews with the audience to provide insights into some of the systematic exclusion of people with disabilities in these discussions, particularly in …

Art Therapy And The Person-Centered Approach: A Method For Breaking Down Creative Resistance With Dementia Patients, Kimberly Nelson

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This Capstone explores the use of art therapy with a geriatric population on a psychiatric unit of a small, rural southern hospital. Most of the patients experience symptoms of dementia and are over the age of 55. Many patients presented with resistance to creative pursuits and this researcher utilized the person-centered approach to counter this “creative resistance”. In other words, the patients were met where they were at and accepted unconditionally, through empathy and congruence. The materials that were offered to this population were explored through the creative resistance as well, and a simple number two pencil produced successful results …

In cases of people suffering from depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), these emotional, cognitive, and perceptual changes have been shown to have sometimes profound and long- lasting therapeutic effects, …

Wellness & Psychoeducational Empowerment: An Innovative Approach To Mental Health & Education, Myisha R. Rodrigues

Lesley University Community of Scholars Day

Given our current cultural and sociopolitical climate, it is highly imperative that first generation, black and brown students are positioned to live sustainable lives of choice. Traditional and non-traditional post-secondary opportunities will afford them the ability to have the skills and the knowledge they need as advocates for unheard voices and to challenge equitably unjust institutional systems. However, these leaders of our future will not be able to fully access such success if their general wellness and mental health is not intact. It has been my personal mission for the last 7 years, developing myself as a leader for a …

A systematic review of art therapy programs and educational requirements showed no current standards or training requirements for grief or CG. Art therapists are master’s trained clinicians who work with people with a variety of mental health challenges, and training in CG may …
