This study explored how femicide and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) are framed in the media across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda between January 2024 and April 2025. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research combined quantitative content analysis with qualitative interviews to uncover both coverage patterns and the contextual factors shaping them. The codebook for content analysis was developed from existing literature and grounded in media framing theory, drawing on the works of Goffman, Entman, Iyengar, Tuchman, and Van Zoonen. The study used NTV and Bukedde TV as a case of how television in Uganda portray gender-based violence to address the critical issue of how television framing impacts societal understanding and response to gender-based violence. The research adopted the framing theory as its conceptual lens and employed a mixed-methods approach combining content analysis of television news programs with in-depth interviews with newsroom staff. Garissa county, Kenya is a geographically large county with a mobile pastoralist population that has developed a method for emergency medical services (EMS) coordination using the WhatsApp communication platform. This work was based on a site visit, to better understand and describe the current operations, strengths, and weaknesses of the EMS communication system in Garissa. The use of WhatsApp in Garissa county seems to work well in the local context and has the potential to serve as a cost-effective solution for other EMS systems in Kenya, Africa, and other LMICs.

Background: Road trafc injuries are a large and growing cause of morbidity and mortality in low- and middleincome countries, especially in Africa. Systematic data collection for trafc incidents in Kenya is lacking and in many low- and middle-income countries available data sources are disparate or missing altogether. Many Kenyans use social media platforms, including Twitter; many road trafc incidents are publicly reported on the microblog platform. Background: Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is a human rights violation with social, economic, and health consequences for survivors, perpetrators, and society. Robust evidence on economic, social, and health impact, plus the cost of delivery of VAWG prevention, is critical to making the case for investment, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where health sector resources are highly constrained. Uganda has diverse legacy media with various newspapers and magazines, a growing broadcast media sector, which as of early 2020 was made up of 40 TV and 199 accredited radio stations. The country also has a fast-growing online media driven by rapid technological developments that have seen greater use of smartphones in the country. The News Media Organisations (NMOs) in Uganda have benefitted from liberalization and privatisation policies that the country adopted in the early 1990s, which freed the airwaves and made private investment in the country’s media less complicated.
