From Teaching To The Best Seller List: How The Educational System Drives The Publishing Market And Vice Versa, Kai D. Alexander
From Teaching To The Best Seller List: How The Educational System Drives The Publishing Market And Vice Versa, Kai D. Alexander
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Certain outdated canonical texts have played a huge part in the oppression of minorities and women (Platt), and within the last 20 years or so, research has shown that these “difficult” texts do nothing to help foster a healthy thirst for knowledge outside of the classroom. My purpose is to demonstrate how the educational system – in particular, how reading and writing are taught from elementary school up until college – drives the publishing market, and thus, causes texts like Twilight to sit alongside the best seller list with To Kill a MockingBird. I will argue that there is …
Building A Literary Culture: How Indie Publishers Can Establish Stability By Operating Community Hubs, Lisa Hein
Book Publishing Final Research Papers
What’s causing the recent rise in publisher-operated brick and mortar bookstores? Are there significant advantages that arise from concentrating on in-person connections rather than more convenient engagement methods such as digital marketing? How are some indie book publishers using high-fidelity, physical experiences to promote their brands and foster a literary culture in their communities?
The Role Of The Developmental Editor In Emerging Forms Of Narrative, Stephanie Argy
The Role Of The Developmental Editor In Emerging Forms Of Narrative, Stephanie Argy
Book Publishing Final Research Papers
This research paper looks at how developmental editing techniques and analytical processes can be applied to emerging forms of storytelling. By examining a sampling of projects that expand narrative beyond traditional approaches, and talking to people involved with those projects, this paper examines how developmental editing can be used in these new forms; the skills that editors might want to add to their toolkit; and the impact that developmental editors might be able to have on projects and on new storytelling forms themselves. The paper is meant as a roadmap for next steps for what editors might want to learn …

A History Of Christian Publishing, Erinn Huebner
A History Of Christian Publishing, Erinn Huebner
The Christian Librarian
This essay will address the histories of four major publishing companies in Grand Rapids: Zondervan, Baker, Eerdmans, and Kregel. These publishing companies, through their individual and interwoven histories have shaped and sustained the publishing industry in the Midwest, and Grand Rapids in particular. These publishing houses are significant to the history of books and publishing because, for roughly a century, these publishing houses have been producing Bibles and other evangelical materials that are educating people the world over, from the youngest Sunday school pupils to the oldest seminarian. Finally, the paper will discuss the impact these companies had collectively on …

Comparing Gender Discrimination And Inequality In Indie And Traditional Publishing, Dana B. Weinberg, Adam Kapelner
Comparing Gender Discrimination And Inequality In Indie And Traditional Publishing, Dana B. Weinberg, Adam Kapelner
Publications and Research
In traditional publishing, female authors’ titles command nearly half (45%) the price of male authors’ and are underrepresented in more prestigious genres, and books are published by publishing houses, which determined whose books get published, subject classification, and retail price. In the last decade, the growth of digital technologies and sales platforms have enabled unprecedented numbers of authors to bypass publishers to publish and sell books. The rise of indie publishing (aka self-publishing) reflects the growth of the “gig” economy, where the influence of firms has diminished and workers are exposed more directly to external markets. Encompassing the traditional and …

The Walking Dead Genealogy: Unsubstantiated Criticisms Of Qualitative Data Analysis Software (Qdas) And The Failure To Put Them To Rest, Kristi Jackson, Trena Paulus, Nicholas H. Woolf
The Walking Dead Genealogy: Unsubstantiated Criticisms Of Qualitative Data Analysis Software (Qdas) And The Failure To Put Them To Rest, Kristi Jackson, Trena Paulus, Nicholas H. Woolf
The Qualitative Report
The authors conduct an exposé on the deterministic denunciations of Qualitative Data Analysis Software (QDAS) and how citation errors keep these criticisms alive. They use a zombie metaphor to describe more than two decades of battling these seemingly mindless assessments of QDAS that keep coming –despite their decay – and simply will not die. Focusing exclusively on the criticism of separation/distancing, which alleges that the computer and the software interfere with the researcher’s familiarity with the data, the authors trace one current strand of this criticism through a literature genealogy. Three citation errors (half-truth, proxy, and hearsay) are identified to …

Long the primary role of university presses, faculty’s long-form scholarship is now being created and disseminated with the help of many types of publishers. Whether it’s an edited volume, a symposium collection, conference proceedings, or a single-authoredwork, most successful long-form scholarly texts are organized around an expected set of elements. Understanding the need for and purpose of each of these elements ensures that the publisher can help an author create an effective work and the reader can navigate the materials successfully. Additional common goals for long-form programs include working with an author to write a well-structured publication containing a coherent …

Sometimes a text-based format will not serve an author’s need –time for a more unique presentation! When does material and research require a multi-modal product? How do you help the author create the final product, be it a database, a video, an interactive work, a website, or an online course? What kinds of files can you accept, publish, and preserve? What material requires any kind of review, and how is that review validated? Who will maintain the site and who gets credit for the creation? Do you have access to a digital humanities center or humanities librarian, and if so …

Many universities have formal programs addressing textbook affordability. These may include committees charged with investigating the current landscape and communicating with faculty to encourage affordable options; open textbook programs supported by the library, institution, or state; or a university-press program supporting faculty in the creation of affordable course readers. How do you identify opportunities to best offset student costs with quality affordable textbooks? Do you create resources devotedto a course at your institution, or should you aim for broader course adoption? What additional non-text components may be expected by users? How do you get faculty on board with creating and …

As a library publisher, will you act as a service provider for your home institution, an editorially driven publisher of scholarly content, or both? After you’ve decided on the approach you want to take, it’s time to select an approach to publishing and craft your vision, mission, and goals. Building and growing a publishing program requires active engagement with the university and scholarly communities. A needs assessment will help you identify areas where your program can focus. Should you target specific areas, perhaps aligned with the strengths or strategic interests of your institution? As word of your program gets out …

We have previously discussed methods and tools for strategic planning and crafting effective goals. How do we know if we are making progress towards these goals? How can we determine if our publications and our work is having the impact we want? This unit introduces assessment methods, tools, and metrics that help us measure the impact of individual publications and publishing programs. We will look at the connection between strategic planning and assessment, and practice applying assessment methods to real-world scenarios. In the first half of the unit, we discuss evaluating individual publications, examining the advantages and disadvantages of common …

Library Publishing Curriculum Impact Module: Trends Affecting Scholarly Publishing (Unit 1), Instructor's Guide, John W. Warren
Library Publishing Curriculum
This unit provides a brief introduction to the Impact module by situating library publishing in the context of key trends affecting scholarly publishing. We will review how changes in technology, consumer behavior, and higher education influence nonprofit and for-profit scholarly publishing, highlighting the changing role of libraries, the rise of online bookselling, the growth of Open Access (OA) publishing models, the expansion of self-publishing, changes in discovery, the ubiquity of social media, the impact of metadata, competition for reader attention, and the changing definitions of “publication” and “scholarship.” Participants will consider the implications of each trend for library publishing.
