Ongoing concerns about a perceived disconnection between management education and management practice and the limited skill base of business school graduates are evident in the literature. These problems have been looked at through various lenses, and the professional model of education has shown promise in addressing perceived problems with business schools and their graduates. Using concepts from the sociology of the professions including jurisdiction, professional identity, and the nature of professional work, this article explores recent criticisms of management education and addresses the stages and issues involved in migrating to a model of education that mirrors that used in the …

Concordia Journal of Communication Research

The researchers chose to examine religion as a factor in the decision to attend a university and the way that students adapt communicatively to faith-based universities. The concept brought many aspects of communication into play, but only a specific group of theories were applicable to the research findings. The researchers selected two theories to help explain the data: Communication Accommodation Theory and Symbolic Interactionism Theory. Both, Communication Accommodation Theory and Symbolic Interactionism Theory, focus on the decision-making and adaptation aspects of the study.

The focus of this paper is the dynamic relationship in automobile industry between entrepreneur and the power in 1969-1998. The length of this study can be divided in three periods: seeking the industrial form, going to maturity, and realizing the industrial autonomous. Looking back to the Old Order and analyzing along three periods, this research has found that the structure transformed the interactions between actors—“the shifting patronage”. This article argue that “Chinese-ness” is an achievable entity to a social group with indigenous cultural identity. Previous studies tend to define ethnic identity as a single and objective entity. This study offers a new understanding on ethnic identity. Identity is defined as a process to identify a certain collectivity in which an individual feels he/she belonged to, while ethnicity is one of the manifestations of collectivities. This study examines a recent bargaining process between the Faculty Association and Central Michigan University. Taking a systems approach, we began with the assumption that a healthy organizational culture produces negative feedback which can help keep participants at the bargaining table despite disagreement. However, if organizational members’ relationships are threatened, organizational culture unravels as destructive messages provide positive feedback to disrupt the system and make impasse more likely. This thesis focuses on Catholic Charities (Hereafter CC), a non-profit agency that provides pregnancy and adoption support to families in times of crisis. Research and agency data reflect a positive association between the amount of time clients engage in services and the resolution of crises. Both theoretically and empirically, a key determinant of the depth and breadth of clients' engagement with both for-profit and non-profit services is their satisfaction with such services. In 2009-2010, CC's in-house, client surveys reported a decreasing level of client engagement with services. One clear trend was that clients discontinued services after thirty days or less. …

Employees experience supervisor communication problems potentially resulting in job stress in the work environment. Person environment fit theory was the framework for the study with six questions used to flesh out participants’ real life experiences. Findings indicated participants’ stress levels were affected but not fit in the work environment.

Although nonprofits see value and potential in social media, many have not yet mastered social media and harnessed their full potential. This phenomenological study sought to identify the best social media strategies and tactics for effectively engaging existing and potential donors, volunteers and stakeholders, according to social media nonprofit professionals. Six themes emerged: listening to the audience; engaging instead of fundraising; sharing relevant, valuable and actionable content; being honest, accessible and responsive; using social media as part of a multi-channel strategy; and that measuring is mandatory.

The use of personal electronic devices by professionals can both increase efficiency and create distractions. Because of this dichotomy, perceptions of the use of personal electronic devices in meetings may be divided. The purpose of this study is to determine how personal electronic device use in face-to-face organizational meetings is perceived, how perceptions are changing over time, which factor has the greatest influence on perceptions, and how this influential factor shapes and guides perceptions. Performing Collaborative Creativity: Learning From Diverse Experts Interacting In Ireland’S Science Gallery, Diane Tangney, Olivia Freeman, Brendan O'Rourke

This paper presents preliminary findings deriving from a larger project investigating the performance of collaborative creativity and is primarily concerned with describing the communication patterns of such performance. Interactions between different domain experts in Ireland’s Science Gallery, Trinity College Dublin, were observed and recorded over the course of four months in 2011. The interactions have been loosely transcribed using the basic principles of CA. Preliminary findings include three observations. Firstly, creative performances involve a type of content we call ‘idea talk’. Secondly, performances of creative collaboration involve variance, not equality, in participation by individual experts.
