Elaboration And The Logical And Affective Responses To Flood Risk Messages: Elaboration Likelihood Model And Information Processing Perspectives, Ayanna Eastman
Elaboration And The Logical And Affective Responses To Flood Risk Messages: Elaboration Likelihood Model And Information Processing Perspectives, Ayanna Eastman
Faculty Works
The loss of property and life following tragic events, such as flooding in the United States, demonstrate the frequent ineffectiveness of official risk communication strategies. Few studies have focused on the cognitive processes that impact individuals’ decisions upon receiving risk messages prior to flooding events. This study focuses specifically on the content of public service announcements (PSAs), elaboration and the logical and affective responses elicited by flooding and assesses individualized responses to varying message formats. It does so through the frameworks of the Information Processing Theory (IPT) and Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) by examining the impact of flood risk messages …

Rural Futures Institute: Publications
Overall, most metropolitan Nebraskans have confidence in their local institutions (public safety agencies in their community, public schools in their community, and voting and election systems in their county). However, many have very little confidence in many national institutions (the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives and the Presidency) as well as the Governor.
Metropolitan Nebraskans most trust information received from friends/family/ acquaintances, local news sources (TV and newspapers), public sources (PBS and public radio) and state newspapers. They least trust information from social networking sites, Internet blogs, and Fox News.

Journalism Graduates’ Perceptions And Experiences Of Internships And Employment, Breanne L. Ahearn
Journalism Graduates’ Perceptions And Experiences Of Internships And Employment, Breanne L. Ahearn
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Graduates who do not have an internship show greater difficulty in obtaining gainful employment compared to those who do have an internship. However, simply believing that internships may translate into employment does not explain how students perceive the role of the internship in obtaining employment in the field. The purpose of the study was to investigate the graduates’ perceptions and experiences of how internships might affect journalism majors’ gaining employment in the field within 6 months of graduation. Kolb’s four stages of experiential learning theory was used as the conceptual framework to investigate how journalism-related major graduates described their journalism …
Television Viewing And Latino Stereotypes, Gustavo Rivera
Television Viewing And Latino Stereotypes, Gustavo Rivera
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Over the course of a modern lifetime, television viewing accounts for a significant amount of information taken in by viewers. Within that consumption lies a potential problem. Viewers may learn erroneous messages about people and the world. Since television has characterized Latinos in ways that have emphasized cultural stereotypes, viewers may learn to perceive them in a corresponding manner. A questionnaire was administered to a sample of 403 students from five universities and two community colleges located in Northern California. The respondents completed a seventy-one item questionnaire. Five key variables were utilized to measure relationships between them. The key variables …

Teaching And Learning News Media In Politically Unsettled Times, H. James Garrett, Mardi Schmeichel, Joseph Mcanulty, Sonia Janis
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Our research explores and elaborates the ways preservice teachers come to know and begin conceptualizing ways of teaching about news media. We report on what we interpret as their understandings and, perhaps more importantly, their misunderstandings of media literacy as they relate to their emerging ideas about what it means to teach others about crucial social and political issues of our time. The students with whom the authors worked demonstrated problematic misperceptions and misunderstandings about important media concepts and topics. These preservice teachers misunderstood the ways in which news media is different from other media genres. Additionally, they often indicated …

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations
This Open Access book tracks the latest trends in the theory, research, and practice of entertainment-education, the field of communication that incorporates social change messaging into entertaining media. Sometimes called edutainment, social impact television, narrative persuasion, or cultural strategy, this approach to social and behavior change communication offers new opportunities including transmedia and digital formats. However, making media can be a chaotic process. The realities of working in the field and the rigid structures of scholarly evaluation often act as barriers to honest accounts of entertainment-education practice. In this collection of essays, experienced practitioners offer unique insight into how entertainment-education …

An Analysis Of Soccer Referee Demographics And Motivational Factors In The Western Kentucky Soccer Officials Association, Daniel Hasko
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Through a lens of the Knowledge Gap Theory of Mass Communication and the consideration of Media Framing Theory, this research examined the demographics of soccer referees in the Western Kentucky Soccer Officials Association, in addition to the leading motivations for beginning, continuing, and leaving their officiating vocation. With the knowledge of the aforementioned, this paper aimed to lay the groundwork for a strategic communication plan in the officiating community that addresses the alarming trend that is a lack of certified referees in youth athletics. The data was collected through online surveys that were distributed to active referees in the Western …

Encroachment: College Athletes’ Experiences With Identity Development As Affected By Media Representations Of Social Justice Demonstrations, Madison Remi Vanwalleghen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study was conducted to understand how communication and identity are experienced by Black university athletes in asking about their experiences and how they gauge mainstream media portrayals of Black NFL athletes making verbal or physical statements about or in protest of social injustice, racism, and inequality in America. I interviewed five university athletes identifying as Black/African American or Mixed- Race using media representations of Black NFL athletes’ protests since the NFL has dominated mainstream media headlines regarding recent athletes’ protests, especially in connection to the Black Lives Matter social movement. I also used several theories to interpret the data …
