Integrating Aviation Technology, Emergency Services, And Human Resilience: Considerations From Social Scientists, Chelsea A. Lenoble Ph.D., Joel M. Billings Ph.D., Allison A. Kwesell Ph.D., Ray H. Chang Ph.D.

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) have a range of applications within the field of disaster response. This presentation offers a novel framework of psychosocial considerations designed to advance UAS and disaster management integration. Social scientists highlight important challenges to the effective integration of three primary entities: UAS, the team of teams that responds to disasters, and populations affected by disasters.

The presentation adopts an emerging theoretical perspective on the intersection between UAS capabilities and disaster phases and extends it by bringing necessary attention to social science issues. Specifically, the framework outlines psychosocial considerations and areas of improvement for preparation (training), response …

America's Last Great Newspaper War [Table Of Contents], Mike Jaccarino Mar 2020

America's Last Great Newspaper War [Table Of Contents], Mike Jaccarino

Cinema & Media Studies

A from-the-trenches view of New York Daily News and New York Post runners and photographers who would stop at nothing to break the story and squash their tabloid arch rivals.

When author Mike Jaccarino was offered a job at the Daily News in 2006, he was asked a single question: “Kid, what are you going to do to help us beat the Post?” That was the year things went sideways at the News, when The New York Post surpassed its nemesis in circulation for the first time in the history of both papers. Tasked with one job—crush the …

Publication Dissemination Of Film Research Results In Indonesia, Rangga Saptya Mohamad Permana, Hanny Hafiar, Jimi Narotama Mahameruaji, Sri Seti Indriani

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The interest of the younger generation in Indonesia to pursue the world of films began to show an increase. Universities responded to the high interest by opening study programs in the field of film. This positive condition expects to expand further and deepen knowledge in the field of film that can be generated by research in the field of film. Therefore we need a mapping of the distribution of film research topics in Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to examine trends in film research in Indonesia. Free Battered Texas Women: Survivor-Advocates Organizing At The Crossroads Of Gendered Violence, Disability, And Incarceration, Cathy Marston Phd Feb 2020

Free Battered Texas Women: Survivor-Advocates Organizing At The Crossroads Of Gendered Violence, Disability, And Incarceration, Cathy Marston Phd

Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice

This article recaps my symposium presentation, where I argue that feminist organizing strategies are central to healing our society and creating restorative justice from my perspective as a survivor of occupational injury, battering, and criminalization for self-defense. This includes the creation of Free Battered Texas Women. We prefer to think of ourselves as survivor-advocates who use a variety of tactics to empower ourselves, incarcerated battered women, and citizens. These strategies include pedagogy; poetry and other written forms; art; and legislative advocacy. I blend this grassroots activism with feminist disability theory, radical feminist theory, feminist ethnography, and feminist criminology.

The United States Of America’S Interlocked Information Industry: An Examination Into Seven U.S. Media Sectors’ Boards Of Directors, Jennifer L. Harker Feb 2020

The United States Of America’S Interlocked Information Industry: An Examination Into Seven U.S. Media Sectors’ Boards Of Directors, Jennifer L. Harker

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This research explores the interfirm interlock networks that currently exist among publicly-traded media conglomerates operating in the United States of America. Directorship information was gathered from annual reports and definitive proxy reports filed with the U.S. SEC for 68 media conglomerates across seven media sectors for year ending 2018. This investigation applies social resource theory to assess the social networks formed by interfirm interlocks and how such network structures address environmental uncertainty. Results indicate that not all alliances are mutually beneficial and those that are more resource-dependent endure negative cooptation effects. This research discusses how these changes in interfirm interlocks …
