A Unit On Relationship Termination For The Basic Course, Lynn A. Phelps
A Unit On Relationship Termination For The Basic Course, Lynn A. Phelps
Basic Communication Course Annual
Basic interpersonal communication courses stress relationship development but seldom address the concept of relationship termination. If addressed, termination is often viewed from a negative perspective. Yet in today's mobile society, the concept that a person will continue to develop new relationships throughout their life without terminating any of their previous relationships is ludicrous at best. The purpose of this article is to suggest units on relationship termination which are appropriate for the basic communication course.
Teaching Ethics In The Basic Survey Speech Communication Course, William A. Haskins
Teaching Ethics In The Basic Survey Speech Communication Course, William A. Haskins
Basic Communication Course Annual
The teaching of ethics in speech communication courses is not new to most communication curricula. Emphasis upon teaching ethics in speech communication courses, however, appears to be growing. Attention on the teaching of ethics appears to be growing as well as in many basic speech communication classes. This paper, then, provides general suggestions on teaching ethics in a basic speech communication course.
The Necessity Of Separating Idealized Accountability From Realized Accountability: A Case Study, Karen Greenberg
The Necessity Of Separating Idealized Accountability From Realized Accountability: A Case Study, Karen Greenberg
Basic Communication Course Annual
This essay presents the hidden distinction between the idealized accountability and the realized accountability of the basic communication course. It illuminates this difference as this difference is evidenced in the ethical dimension of the rhetoric of basic communication course instructors'manuals. Contrary to popular myth, the basic communication course does not aim to reinforce the importance of the creation and maintenance of students' or instructors' identities, but aims to reinforce the importance of the creation and maintenance of educational systems. That is, this course mystifies one type of social hierarchy rather than elucidating many.
Implications Of Student And Instructor Involvement In The Basic Course, Samuel P. Wallace, Don B. Morlan
Implications Of Student And Instructor Involvement In The Basic Course, Samuel P. Wallace, Don B. Morlan
Basic Communication Course Annual
The purpose of the study is to test the notion that students in the basic course who possess high levels of communication competence will perform better in and subsequently will be more satisfied with the course than their counterparts with low levels of competence. Results show no support for the initial hypothesis. Further analysis, however, showed that the level of instructor competence has a significant effect on student evaluation of instructors.
Training Or Teaching? A Professional Development Program For Graduate Teaching Assistants, Douglas M. Trank
Training Or Teaching? A Professional Development Program For Graduate Teaching Assistants, Douglas M. Trank
Basic Communication Course Annual
Basic course directors are urged to consider the range of roles available to them in working with graduate teaching assistants. The key element in establishing an effective professional development program is the development of an appropriate atmosphere where the graduate instructors know they are viewed as valuable members of the faculty. Such a program must remain flexible enough to meet the needs of the graduate instructors and the department it serves. Treating graduate instructors as colleagues and involving them in the process, giving them power and freedom, and valuing the teaching they do benefits the students, the graduate instructors, the …

The Evolution Of American Expository Prose Style As Exemplified By The Easy Chair Columnists Of Harper's Magazine, Cherie Rouse
The Evolution Of American Expository Prose Style As Exemplified By The Easy Chair Columnists Of Harper's Magazine, Cherie Rouse
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This thesis aims to describe the way American expository prose style evolved during the period 1851 to 1981 as exemplified by the Easy Chair columnists of Harper's Magazine. Major premises of the study are that style and meaning are the same, but that a writer chooses among various shades of meaning, sometimes on the basis of rhetorical strategy, and thus it is possible to make meaningful statements about a writer's style.
The research methods emphasized synthesis of many different kinds of information about each author's writing, rather than complete reliance on impressionistic judgement or on quantified data. For each author …

Symbol And Artifact: Jungian Dynamics At Mcluhan's Technological Interface, Mike Amana Glick
Symbol And Artifact: Jungian Dynamics At Mcluhan's Technological Interface, Mike Amana Glick
Dissertations and Theses
Our goal was to establish some form of interpretation between the analytical work of Carl Jung in depth psychology and the views of Marshall McLuhan regarding the impact of media. It was hoped that such a correlation of contrasting viewpoints would yield additional insight in the study of mass reactions to media.
In accomplishing this purpose a “universe” based upon analytical psychology was juxtaposed with an expressly “McLuhanesque” analysis of media and technological effects. After establishing correlations between the major dynamics of the two systems, several functional conclusions were reached. These are: (1) that media have an inescapable influence, (2) …

The Rhetoric Of Laura Clay: A Southern Argument For Woman Suffrage, Margaret Wesolowski
The Rhetoric Of Laura Clay: A Southern Argument For Woman Suffrage, Margaret Wesolowski
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study focused on the persuasive efforts of Laura Clay (1848-1941) as they represented a particularly southern argument for woman suffrage as opposed to the northern, or National American Woman Suffrage Association, suffrage argument. As a Kentuckian, she believed she understood southern attitudes on the three major issues she encountered during her thirty-two years as a suffragist.
The three issues were those of woman's traditional role, the race question, and state versus federal legislation. The arguments of Miss Clay concerning these issues were premised on justice and expediency, which formed the rationale of suffragist rhetoric.
Her arguments, tailored to southerners, …

The 1972 Cigarette Tax Referendum: A Mass Communication Campaign, Gwendolyn Moore Danielson
The 1972 Cigarette Tax Referendum: A Mass Communication Campaign, Gwendolyn Moore Danielson
Dissertations and Theses
During the past forty years, Oregon voters have approved only two tax proposals; both taxes on cigarettes. The subject of this study is the campaign carried out by proponents of H.B. 3064 to pass the most recent Oregon tax referendum measure. Central to the questions asked in the investigation of the 1972 cigarette tax campaign was why the outcome of this proposal was successful. The thesis hypothesizes that the critical variable was the involvement of major socio-economic interest groups in formulating and disseminating persuasive campaign messages.
The rationale for entering into such a study was the shortage of information on …
