Let Us Rank Journalism Programs, Joseph Weber
Let Us Rank Journalism Programs, Joseph Weber
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications
Unlike law, business, and medical schools, as well as universities in general, journalism schools and journalism programs have rarely been ranked. Publishers such as U.S. News & World Report, Forbes, Bloomberg Businessweek, and Washington Monthly do not pay them much mind. What is the best journalism school in the country? The top ten undergraduate and graduate schools? It is impossible to know. That should change, and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) should lead the way. It should develop a ranking system that would be helpful to anyone interested, especially because federal policy makers soon will …

[The Development Of Public Relations In] Kenya, Dane M. Kiambi
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications
This chapter traces the practice of PR from pre-independence Kenya to the 21st century. It emerges that the practice of PR is closely tied to major national events and to social, cultural, political and economic forces. PR roles as understood by the pre-independence colonial government: keeping the public informed on government development projects, assessing public opinion and advising government, endearing government to Kenyans and building the awareness of Kenya abroad have continued to modern-day Kenya.

Tracking Onslow: a community in transition
This edition marks two years since this project began and we started listening to and documenting what the people of Onslow have to say about the ways the Macedon and Wheatstone Gas Hub Projects are changing their town.
We come every six months to record the sentiments and write a first draft of the evolving history of the town, that we publish as a magazine in hardcopy and available online.
This project is supported by the Shire of Ashburton that funds our visits to Onslow, while respecting the independence of our journalism. We receive no funding from Chevron or BHP …

How Broadcast Journalists Use Twitter To Present The Message Of The State Of The Union: #Sotu, Jeffrey Hayden Haynes
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
With the social media revolution and the sense of urgency people have, the way people receive their news has altered. Twitter is becoming a more popular platform to receive news because of its ability to spread news faster than any other medium. This study addresses the ability of broadcast journalists to spread their agenda using Twitter. This study is a content analysis and quantitative analysis of the Twitter accounts of broadcast journalists Greta Van Susteren and Chris Matthews during the 2014 State of the Union address. Using the Agenda Setting theory and the Two Step Flow model, this study found …

Media Framing, Proximity And Spheres: The Media Account Before And After The August 21, 2013 Syrian Chemical Attack, Jeremy D. Crisp
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
The conflict in Syria over the past two years came to the forefront of international policy, and media reporting, following the August 21, 2013, chemical attack within the country which left more than 1,400 civilians dead. The United States administration was thrust into a position to respond in some fashion to those attacks. President Barack Obama and some U.S. policy makers called for limited military intervention. Others officials called for non-intervention. Diplomacy ultimately prevailed. How the media framed the conflict before and after the attack is the crux of this research, as media framing can play a role in how …

Honors Theses
This thesis covers several areas of investigation. A majority of the information came from staff members in the Ole Miss Athletics Department and the Ole Miss Athletics Foundation, including information from my own experiences working with both organizations. In researching other schools, I reached out to colleagues associated with the four other universities that I examined, interviewing them on different subject matters. Additional information was found in textbooks and online articles. From my research, I was able to discover the various methods that schools use to promote athletics programs. By employing the areas of public and media relations, marketing, social …

An Analysis Of The Media's Coverage Of The Columbine High School And Sandy Hook Elementary School Shootings, Mara Joffe
Honors Theses
The primary purpose of the current research was to determine what ethical challenges have evolved for journalists covering breaking news stories, focusing on the differences in print coverage between the 1999 Columbine school shooting and the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting. A total of 435 news stories originating from the Denver Post, the Hartford Courant and the Chicago Tribune were used in the analysis, categorized by type, main point, length and tone of each article. Overall, several of the findings were consistent with the literature. Two results hold major implications for the journalism field. First, the increase in interpretive, opinion …

Sexual And Political Affairs: Representation Of Women In American News Media, Melissa Beal
Sexual And Political Affairs: Representation Of Women In American News Media, Melissa Beal
Masters Theses
Explores representations in American news media of women who have been involved sexually with male politicians and women who are politicians through a critical rhetorical lens. Through the use of poststructural feminism, the term "mistress" is problematized. Attention is given to the news media's focus on women's bodies as sites of dangerous sexual temptations as well as the media's constant attention to women's physical features, which reduces women to objects. It is shown that similar coverage regarding bodies is not given to men. Also discusses the news media's frequent interrogation of women's minds. Explores aspects of confession and apology through …

Jour 302: Reporting Ii—A Peer Review Of Teaching Project Inquiry Portfolio, Joseph Weber
UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
This document summarizes the results of an inquiry conducted as part of an advanced reporting course. The questions at hand were, “can students be taught to avoid bias in their journalistic work and to provide fair accounts of news developments?” and “how might they best be taught that?” This exploration revolved around a single lecture and discussion session, several reading assignments and the viewing of a video interview, and involved two writing assignments. The results suggest that both the teaching and evaluation of bias and fairness are difficult and complex. The findings suggest a single lesson may not be adequate …
Parental Mediation Of Adolescent Movie Viewing, Larry James Webster Jr.
Parental Mediation Of Adolescent Movie Viewing, Larry James Webster Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Parental mediation of media use by children has been studied extensively as it applies to television and children 12 years old and younger. This study expands the scope of Parental Mediation Theory by applying it to adolescents (age 13-17 years old) and movie viewing. The results of this study show overall parental mediation of adolescent movie viewing is negatively associated with the age of the child. The results show that among parents who mediate movie viewing, restrictive, instructive and social co-viewing mediation strategies are negatively correlated with the age of the adolescent. Third Person Effect is also examined as parental …

Hrecs And Journalism Research: The Uneven Playing Field, Kayt Davies

This article continues an ongoing investigation into the problems that contemporary researchers in Australia using journalism as a methodology face in meeting the bureaucratic requirements of Human Research Ethics Committees (HRECs). This discussion in the peer-reviewed literature includes Richards (2009), Turner (2011), Lindgren and Phillips (2011), Romano (2012) and two articles by the author (Davies 2011a, 2011b). These two articles explored the flexibility built into the HREC's guiding document, the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research, in 2007 in order to make it possible for research that does not fit the standard scientific model to gain timely approval. …

This research paper discusses the findings from a 2012 Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) sponsored project that canvassed the views of news editors around Australia about the "job readiness" of tertiary educated journalism graduates. The focus of this paper is limited to responses from news editors in Western Australia. Data was collected via face to face interviews with eleven news editors in Perth, Western Australia.
