Narrative Medicine And Traditional Medical Interviewing Approaches In Women With Breast Cancer, Wendy L. Hine
Narrative Medicine And Traditional Medical Interviewing Approaches In Women With Breast Cancer, Wendy L. Hine
Communication ETDs
Interactions between early-stage breast cancer patients and their medical providers were analyzed, focusing on the content of the medical encounter and the patients' subsequent recall of that information. Traditional biomedical interviewing, narrative medicine approaches, and emerging types of dialogue were coded within these encounters. Observations of patient-provider interactions, structured and semi-structured patient interviews, and document analysis enriched this investigation. No "pure type" of patient-provider interaction was found. In order to relate the complex information about diagnoses and treatment options to women with breast cancer, narrative interactions included considerable biomedical information. Similarly, biomedical interactions often included narrative elements. A continuum was …
Trust As An Ethical Construct In Community Based Participatory Research Partnerships., Julie Ermalinda Lucero
Trust As An Ethical Construct In Community Based Participatory Research Partnerships., Julie Ermalinda Lucero
Communication ETDs
This study addressed the lack of attention to trust in Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) partnerships. CBPR is a promising research orientation to reduce health inequities in communities of color. This research orientation has been deemed an ethical and trust building approach to health research. However, this claim has not been empirically investigated. Specifically this investigation explored trust development as a process of ethical communication. Trust is important to all relationships and more attention to how trust develops is needed. In research relationships mistrust, which impacts CBPR, stems from historic events and institutional histories of collaboration. Trust and mistrust can …
When Visions Converge And Collide: A Fantasy Theme Analysis Of Staff Participation In The Patient- And Family-Centered Care Initiative At The University Of New Mexico Hospital, Lisa Rossignol
Communication ETDs
Using Symbolic Convergence Theory (SCT), this study sought to determine the rhetorical vision of staff at UNM hospital about working with patients and families and comparing it to the ideal rhetorical vision that the Institute for Patient- and Family-Centered Care (PFCC) has for healthcare providers. Participant observation methods were employed over a two-month period for seated physician rounds and interdisciplinary care planning and discharge planning meetings at UNMH in a general pediatric unit and a pediatric rehabilitation unit. Physicians had their own unique symbolic reality that differed from the vision of interdisciplinary groups. Physicians were most concerned with other physicians …

Seeds Of Resistance; Harvesting Justice: An Exploration Of Spaces Where Native Seeds Grow, Jaelyn Demaría
Communication ETDs
This project claims space for articulations of resistance and justice that seek healing for land, people, and all living things. It is intended as a contribution to a revisionist global history that explores strategies of resistance to corporate models of existence. It seeks to situate specific environmental and social justice issues in New Mexico within larger global conversations as a way of making connections to similar struggles and generating diverse solutions. Struggles for justice resist dominant power structures that attempt to block access to physical sites of cultural survival. Issues of land and identity are intricately woven together in the …
Ending Poverty? Critical Interrogations Of Class Subjectivities, Agency, And Ideologies In Discursive And Embodied Texts From A U.S. Nonprofit, Brandi Lawless
Ending Poverty? Critical Interrogations Of Class Subjectivities, Agency, And Ideologies In Discursive And Embodied Texts From A U.S. Nonprofit, Brandi Lawless
Communication ETDs
This dissertation explores subjectivities, agency, and power relations that emerge in discourses and performances related to one U.S. nonprofit organization attempting to end poverty, referred to as Transforming Poverty Partnerships (TPP). The author analyzes training materials, interview transcripts, and performance texts documented through participant observation. This study reveals a number of discourses in each of the texts, which function to reproduce dominant societal ideologies about individual hard work as a pathway to success, individual responsibility to create change, the normalization of the middle class, and a reinforcement of whiteness. The author takes a praxical approach in using theories from critical …
Social-Environmental Entrepreneurs' Communicative Actions In Communication Networks, Alice Hopkins-Loy
Social-Environmental Entrepreneurs' Communicative Actions In Communication Networks, Alice Hopkins-Loy
Communication ETDs
Entrepreneurs' communicative plans and actions serve to attract resources to their venture, positioning them for strategic gains. However, there is little understanding of how entrepreneurs perceive, value, navigate, and manage their participation in communication networks. This research finds that entrepreneurs strategically use communication networks to find and engage complementary resources, social support, and human and financial capital. Importantly, entrepreneurs facilitate the development of new networks, around innovative solutions and approaches to social problems.
Negotiating Cultural Identity In The Struggle For Democracy In Zimbabwe: Postcolonial Transitions And Endurance, Cleophas Taurai Muneri
Negotiating Cultural Identity In The Struggle For Democracy In Zimbabwe: Postcolonial Transitions And Endurance, Cleophas Taurai Muneri
Communication ETDs
This project examines how discourses on democratization in Zimbabwe, a country transitioning from colonialism constituted and reconstituted cultural identities. I specifically focused on discourses from both government controlled and privately owned newspapers and 18 civil society organizations involved in the struggle for democracy. I also explored the ideological implications of the newspaper and civil society discourses. The research was guided by three research questions. This research was informed by theoretical and conceptual underpinnings of postcolonial theory, democracy, identity, public and counter-public spheres. Consistent with the critical perspective that informed this project, I utilized Fairclough's critical discourse analysis to bring out …

And Now I'M Here: An Ethnography Of Communication Inquiry Into Asking For Help Practices At A Homeless Shelter', Larae D. Tronstad
Communication ETDs
At a particular faith-based nonprofit homeless shelter located in metropolitan area in the Southwest region of the United States, here called the Little City, this ethnography of communication used one hundred hours of observation, eighteen interviews and two social artifacts to reveal the complex nature of personhood, norms for, and consequences of communicative interaction between homeless individuals and volunteers. Homeless individuals were depicted by themselves, staff, volunteers and the organization as persons who are 'broken,' 'addicted,' and as 'the new poor.' Once homeless individuals joined the Life in Christ's Power program at the Little City, they were 'depersonalized' as they …
Social Support Seeking Processes In Japan And The United States: A Multi-Layered Approach, Satoshi Moriizumi
Social Support Seeking Processes In Japan And The United States: A Multi-Layered Approach, Satoshi Moriizumi
Communication ETDs
The current study investigated cultural, familial, and individual differences in social support seeking processes between Japan and the United States by applying face negotiation theory (FNT). The application of FNT contributed to understanding social support seeking processes by utilizing such concepts as national cultures, and horizontal-vertical individualism and collectivism (I-C) as cultural variables, family communication patterns (FCP) as meso-cultural variables, self-construals as culturally influenced individual variables, and face concerns as situational and relational variables. Using the FNT framework, the current study focused on the following five aspects: (a) cross-cultural comparisons of the amount of social support seeking and coping styles, …

South Asian And (Undocumented) Latino/A Immigrant Bloggers: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Their Engagement With Immigration Discourses, Anjana Mudambi
Communication ETDs
The overarching purpose of this project is to theorize how marginalized communities engage with dominant discourses and to locate possibilities for agency in contesting dominant representations of marginalized groups. I selected two discursive events as instances of a larger U.S. immigration discourse--the enactment of SB 1070 in Arizona and the publication of a column in TIME Magazine in which the author decries the influx of South Asians to his hometown of Edison, NJ. I then modified critical discourse analysis to examine weblog responses to these events by two diasporic communities interpellated by them--(undocumented) Latino/a immigrants and South Asian immigrants. Drawing …
Immigration In Rural Newfoundland: Individual And Community Change, Willow Jackson Anderson
Immigration In Rural Newfoundland: Individual And Community Change, Willow Jackson Anderson
Communication ETDs
The purpose of this study is to learn about the cultural adaptation experiences of immigrants to rural Newfoundland and what, if any, changes the communities themselves have made. I am particularly interested in what role communication plays in these change processes. To investigate this topic I conducted interviews and focus groups with both immigrants and native-born Newfoundlanders in rural areas and then analyzed the resulting data with a rigorous thematic analysis. To accomplish this purpose, I recruited and interviewed eight immigrants and 10 native-born Newfoundlanders in rural areas of the province. Then I conducted three focus groups with each of …

Transcending Traditional Approaches To Sexuality Education: A Case Study In Communicating, Constructing, And Defining Sex-Positive Sexuality Education, Jessica A. Nodulman
Communication ETDs
Guided by a social-ecological approach to health, this study explored a new approach to sex education--sex-positive sexuality education (SPSE). A collective case study was completed on three organizations that utilize a sex-positive approach to sexuality education--Good Vibrations, Scarleteen.com, and The National Sexuality Resource Center's Summer Institute. Good Vibrations is an adult sex toy retailer, Scarleteen.com is an adolescent sexual health website, and the Summer Institute is an academic institute for scholars and practitioners of sexuality studies. Using qualitative methods of observations, interviews, and textual analysis, this study explains how sex-positive sexuality education is constructed, communicated, and defined. Despite studying three …
"I Have To Be Everything" Voices Of International Working Mothers: Negotiating Work-Life Balance In The United States, Qingjing Xu
"I Have To Be Everything" Voices Of International Working Mothers: Negotiating Work-Life Balance In The United States, Qingjing Xu
Communication ETDs
Studies of work-life balance and intercultural adaptation have addressed the effect of work-life conflict for working adults and the psychological and sociocultural adaptation of immigrants. However, rarely does this research explore how working adults, especially women, develop solutions to those work-life tensions. Previous literature is typically silent about how international women struggle with acclimating to a different national culture while also working or going to school and parenting children. Thus, this study aims to explore the unique challenges international working mothers face as they work and live in the United States and the communicative strategies and solutions they adopt in …

Adolescent Sexuality And Gender Discourses In Seventeen, Cosmo Girl, And Teen: A Frame Analysis Of Online Teen Magazines, Krystal Ann Zaragoza
Communication ETDs
This research examines the role of online teen magazines in the production of gender ideologies by analyzing the representation of teenage sexuality from a critical perspective. Informed by theories of representation, citationality, and ideology, I used Pan & Kosickis frame analysis to analyze three online teen magazines including Cosmo Girl, Seventeen, and Teen, focusing on 251 articles centered on adolescent sexuality. Each article was coded for the thematic, rhetorical, syntactic, and script structures, and categorized based on salient elements. After the articles were analyzed, the three online teen magazines constructed a discourse on sexuality through a common dominant frame: sexuality …

The Monstrous Side Of Humanity: A Generic, Narrative, And Audience Reception Analysis Of True Blood, Stacey M. Overholt
Communication ETDs
HBO's drama series "True Blood" has been considered a unique and polysemic text since its debut in 2008.This thesis examined the series through the theoretical lenses of genre, narrative, and audience reception. Specifically, this study examined the series' adherence to the gothic vampire subgenre, the way the series functions as an allegorical narrative, and the audience reception principles demonstrated by viewers of the series. Through my analysis of episodes from all four aired seasons, I established the gothic vampire subgenre, a television genre from literary and film genres, and determined that the series adheres to the substantive, stylistic, and situational …
Let The Beauty We Love Be What We Do: A Case Study In Communication-Centered Leadership, Jo Carter
Let The Beauty We Love Be What We Do: A Case Study In Communication-Centered Leadership, Jo Carter
Communication ETDs
While leadership research is widespread, much of it represents leadership psychology assumptions that leaders are singular individuals, different from the body that they are leading. This dissertation provides a close reading of a different approach to leadership, one arising from the cultural community around the Diana's Grove retreat center. This philosophy holds cultural norms of the Cornerstones of Community (choice, thinking well of the group, thinking well of one's self, stewardship of self, and sacred wound) as overt rules that are the foundation of sustainable community interactions. It discusses how service to the idea of community is the primary motivating …

Obama's Presidential (Mixed) Race: Framing And Ideological Analysis Of Blogs And News, Iliana Rucker
Communication ETDs
The election of Barack Obama as President of the United States brought a heightened awareness to the role of race and produced speculation about the idealized notion of the achievement of a post-racial United States. This dissertation examined mediated conversations on mixed race identity in response to some of the significant events in the Obama campaign and the first months of the Obama presidency. Specifically, this study examined the ways that newspapers and blogs construct discourses about race, mixed race, and racism. Further, I explored the biological, legal, and social implications as they relate to current constructions of mixed-race identity. …

Forms And Fragments: Enactment Of Cultural Identification In An Online Community Of Chinese Living Overseas, Haibin Dong
Communication ETDs
This research is an interpretive study of the dynamics of cultural identification as enacted by Chinese individuals living overseas who participate in a virtual online community known as Wenxuecity.com. The study draws on intercultural communication theories of identity proposed by Carbaugh, Collier, and Hecht, as well as on my own integrative framework for the analysis of cultural identity, to explore the self-other interaction in identity enactment, the multidimensionality of identity, and the centrality of communication in processes of identification. Through the application of a qualitative analysis of online discourse, I found three primary forms of cultural identification-- perceptual, strategic, and …

Nopalitos Mean Something: Communicating Identity In Mother-Daughter Relationships Through Food And Recipe, Darla Antoine
Communication ETDs
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze a memoir/cookbook to highlight the unique role of food and recipes in relationships among women—specifically within mother-daughter relationships. The text highlights how food and recipes can become emotionally entwined in our life stories and in our relationships. Using cluster analysis, the analytical research of this thesis creates conversations about food and recipes as communicative vessels of intimacy and legacy among women and their daughters. Finally, this thesis demonstrates new ways food and recipes may help women navigate their own identities within both the psychoanalytical stages of the Oedipal complex and the psychological …
It's Like A Giant Game Of Telephone: Physicians' Perceptions Of Effective Communication In The Emergency Department Context', Marleah Dean
It's Like A Giant Game Of Telephone: Physicians' Perceptions Of Effective Communication In The Emergency Department Context', Marleah Dean
Communication ETDs
Despite the growing number of emergency department visits, effective communication between patients and physicians are often overlooked because of the fast- paced nature of the emergency department (ED). As such, we do not know what is seen as effective communication within this particular context. Therefore, the goal of this study was to learn how emergency department physicians define effective communication and identify the barriers and facilitators to communicating in the ED. Seventeen semi-structured, open-ended interviews were conducted with ED physicians. Interviews were recorded and transcribed into a Word document. Data analysis included two steps—the constant comparison method (Lindlof & Taylor, …
The Elusive End Of The Rainbow: A (Queer) Rhetorical Analysis Of Rainbow Sash Rhetoric, Kenneth Lythgoe
The Elusive End Of The Rainbow: A (Queer) Rhetorical Analysis Of Rainbow Sash Rhetoric, Kenneth Lythgoe
Communication ETDs
Rainbow Sash Catholicism refers to several LGBT Catholic groups practice of wearing rainbow sashes to Pentecost Mass to denote their opposition to the Roman Catholic Church's stance on non-normative gender and sexuality. Utilizing ideological rhetorical criticism, this study analyzed the act of sash wearing itself along with multiple publicly-available articles, letters, and other rhetorical artifacts generated about sash wearing. The rhetorical artifacts examined were generated by multiple parties to sash wearing: (1) sash wearers themselves, (2) members of the Catholic clergy, and (3) lay Catholics who do not wear the rainbow sash. The principal purpose of this study was to …

Borders, Bridges, And Beer: Performances Of Cultural Identities In The Washington Birthday Celebration, Diana Carolina Ramos
Communication ETDs
In this study I describe how individuals living in Laredo, Texas, a city situated in the U.S.-Mexico border region, make sense of their identities through their experiences in the Washington Birthday Celebration (WBC). By focusing on communication as means for creating cultural identities, this study provides insight into how communication is used in the construction and performance of cultural identities. Specifically, I focus on The Society of Martha Washington, one of the several affiliate organizations that participates in the WBC, in order to answer the following research questions about the enactment of cultural identities in the WBC: (1) What cultural …
Immigration Discourses In The U.S. And In Japan, Chie Torigoe
Immigration Discourses In The U.S. And In Japan, Chie Torigoe
Communication ETDs
The primary purpose of this study was to investigate how systems of racial inequality and dominance produced at macro-institutional level discourses are reproduced and/or challenged in micro-interpersonal everyday discourses regarding immigration/foreign workers in the U.S. and in Japan. To establish a link between the discourses at these two levels, I employed a combination of critical and interpretive theoretical perspectives, and analyzed how racial ideologies were reproduced and/or challenged through participants' use of various interpretative repertoires (i.e., discursive themes and specific rhetorical moves therein) and positioning of self and Others. Interpretative repertoires and discursive positioning of self and Others are major …
Patient-Provider Encounter: The Contemporary Cameroonian Story, Eudaline Patricia Hell
Patient-Provider Encounter: The Contemporary Cameroonian Story, Eudaline Patricia Hell
Communication ETDs
Most communication scholars recognize that cultural beliefs influence health and interactions about health. Within the African context, religious cultural beliefs constitute dynamic elements of the culture. My dissertation explains the influences of religion and culture on patient-provider interactions in Cameroon. My field research sought answers to the following questions: How do the assumptions of the Western medical model intersect with those of the native culture in patient-provider interactions? How do Cameroonian providers and patients conceptualize health and illness? How does Cameroonian culture, especially native and Christian religious beliefs influence the beliefs and practices of providers and patients? How do interactions …
Undocumented, Unapologetic, And Unafraid: Discursive Strategies Of The Immigrant Youth Dream Social Movement, Claudia Alejandra Anguiano
Undocumented, Unapologetic, And Unafraid: Discursive Strategies Of The Immigrant Youth Dream Social Movement, Claudia Alejandra Anguiano
Communication ETDs
This project centers on the advocacy of undocumented immigrant youth to realize the passage of the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, a narrowly tailored bipartisan legislation that would provide qualifying undocumented youth a pathway to citizenship. Using a Latino/a Critical Race framework to address socio-political discourses surrounding the immigration debate, my analysis presents the ways undocumented youth communicated about their identity and agency and the ways they constructed their demands publicly in seeking passage of the DREAM Act during the years 2001 to 2010. This research purposefully departs from the traditional modality of research and conceptualizes …
Understanding The Confluence Of Online Islamism And Counterpublicity: An Ideological Study Of The Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood's Rhetoric In Ikhwanweb, Soumia Dhar
Communication ETDs
My dissertation addresses two fundamental problems confronting most Islamist organizations: (a) their monolithic treatment by Western advocates of secular and democratic change, who by default associate Islamism with extremism; and (b) their struggle to function as unencumbered civil society actors and legitimate political entities in authoritarian political societies. In that endeavor, I carry out an ideological analysis of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood's (MB) English-language rhetoric in its website, Ikhwanweb: (a) to interpret the worldview manifest in its cyber rhetoric, and identify the rhetorical strategies that support this worldview; and b) to examine Ikhwanweb's potential as a tool for counterpublic expression …
The Materiality Of The Self: A Multimodal, Communicative Approach To Identity, Sachi Sekimoto
The Materiality Of The Self: A Multimodal, Communicative Approach To Identity, Sachi Sekimoto
Communication ETDs
The purpose of this dissertation is to propose a multimodal approach as an alternative way of theorizing and researching identity. The multimodal approach utilizes four modes of interaction--multidirectional interpellation, spatiality, temporality, and corporealit--to explore the processes of interaction and engagement between an individual and his/her social worlds. The multimodal approach focuses on the materiality of lived experience and the process of interaction and engagement between an individual and his/her social worlds through which his or her identity materializes. I apply the multimodal approach to analyze two autobiographical texts in which the authors deal with Asian identity in different cultural and …
Jewish Landscapes Rooted, Embedded, Enshrined, And Transcendent: Metaphor As Communicated In Jewish Museums In New York, Jerusalem, And San Francisco, Judith Stauber
Communication ETDs
As public places, museums negotiate authenticity and re-presentation, fact and ideology, memory and the present confronting a basic question for museums directors, curators, and visitors alike: what is the truth here? In this dissertation, the content and form of four Jewish museums are examined rhetorically: The Jewish Museum, and the Museum of Jewish Heritage: A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, both in New York City; the Holocaust History Museum at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem; and the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco. Four metaphors--rootedness, embeddedness, enshrinement, and transcendence--capture the ways each of these museums conceptualizes and presents Jewish culture.
Madd Message Effects: A Twelve-Year Randomized Trial, Una E. Medina
Madd Message Effects: A Twelve-Year Randomized Trial, Una E. Medina
Communication ETDs
One out of three Americans undergoes drunk-driving crashes; 23% result in death. To deter DWIs (Driving While under Influence), MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers) created VIPs (Victim Impact Panels) where victims impact offenders with gory stories, photos, and threats of punishments and loss of freedom, hoping this message will deter DWIs. It is remarkable that although the VIP message is considered a primary DWI intervention, yet no studies have investigated VIP message effects. VIP message effects, their persistence and decay, are chronicled here over the course of 12 years. This study extends an empirical investigation of VIPs, conducted by Woodall, …
