Ted Williams is dead at 83. A simple sentence that most American sports fans have seen or heard in the past twelve hours. What follows for each person will vary by age and background. For me it is one of those moments when you are aware that something that has been a constant throughout your life is no more.

The loss displayed on the faces of his teammates was palpable. At the extraordinary gathering in St. Louis Wednesday afternoon Darryl Kile's teammates, past and present, together with family, friends and fans paid tribute to the pitcher who died last Saturday of heart failure at the age of 33.

This month marks the thirtieth anniversary of the passage of the Educational Amendments Act of 1972 whose section, Title IX, transformed sport in America. After thirty years the achievements of Title IX are impressive, while the controversy over it has been growing steadily especially over the last few years.

This past week both Phil Jackson and Scotty Bowman won a record ninth championship in their given sports. These two coaches now join the elite in the coaching fraternity and just in their own sports. Bowman and Jackson have become two of the great coaches in the history of professional sport in North America. When the names of the great coaches like Lombardi, Auerbach, McCarthy and Blake are cited, the names of Scotty Bowman and Phil Jackson must now be listed with them.

On Tuesday I was listening to the "Jim Rome Show" while driving into the campus and I heard a painful and astounding interview with Sheldon Kennedy. As some of you will remember Kennedy was the NHL player for the Boston Bruins who revealed in late 1996 that as a young boy and then young man he was subject to repeated sexual abuse by his hockey coach Graham James.

Which is more important, the team or the individual? A rather simple question which seemingly should have a simple and easy answer. Of course not all team sports are purely team sports. Some team sports are as much or more individual sports than team sports. The mix varies. Some team sports are only marginally so. This can confuse the issue.

I have been away for the last two weeks, off into the land of EuroSport where real men play real sports in which feet figure heavily. As a result I have missed much of the action of the first two weeks of the baseball season, except for an occasional glimpse at a Mets or Yankee highlight, which seem to be the only baseball fragments shown on CNN World News.

In the Final Four that concluded yesterday in San Antonio basketball with a retro look graced the hardwood court (or was it some synthetic composite) for the first time in years. Those who have watched the University of Connecticut glide with precision to their undefeated season and NCAA Championship have been treated to a brand of basketball emphasizing team play, sharp cuts and passes, and a group of women who play with great intensity and joy.

Looking back on the two plus weeks of the Winter Olympics a number of things stand out. As I have noted here this was an extraordinary experience for me as I had never been to any Olympics before. Beyond that I would like to look at three areas that seem of some significance to me.

The opportunity to attend the Winter Olympics was something I never really thought I would have, but due to a number of coincidental circumstances and the generosity of friends I was able to attend the first ten days of the games.

The Olympic experience in person is considerably, perhaps even radically, different from the Olympic experience on television, especially American television. NBC's "virtually live" Olympics, which we were told was necessary during the games from Sydney because of the great time difference, continues at the Winter Games for some complex of other bogus reasons offered up by NBC.

The first thing that you need to know coming from Florida is that it is called the Winter Olympics because it takes place in the winter. Therefore it is cold. At times it is bitterly cold, but most of the time it is just cold. As this was my first Olympics and the Winter Games are my favorite none of this mattered as we headed off for Olympic Park and the 90m ski jumping competition on Sunday.

Patriotism And The Super Bowl - Drugs And Sport, Richard C. Crepeau

Watching the Super Bowl on Sunday one could not avoid being moved by some aspect or another of the patriotism on display. 9/11 remains strong in the memory of us all and as I noted last September sport does provide us with opportunities for collective mourning, remembrance, and expressions of patriotism. I also noted that it is a characteristic of Americans to move toward excess in almost everything we do in public ritual.

Is there anyone alive in the United States today who does not know that the Super Bowl is coming up on Sunday? It is Super Bowl XXXVI, thirty-six in real numbers, and will be played in what should be the permanent home of the Super Bowl, New Orleans. There is no venue more appropriate, save perhaps Vegas, for this mid-winter festival of conspicuous consumption and conspicuous waste, not be mention decadence, in these high holy days of the American Empire.
