Last Saturday you could hear the chant that goes with the tomahawk chop on two networks, and if you were quick with the remote control you could even get them into sequence. The Atlanta Braves were on CBS, while over on ABC the Florida State Seminoles were putting on a clinic for Kansas to open the college football season. As always, Keith Jackson was there with his now familiar, nearly anesthetizing, call of the game. College football and Keith Jackson are nearly one.

The President of Florida State University, Dr. Dale Lick resigned last week after controversy surrounding his candidacy for the presidency of Michigan State University. That controversy stemmed from comments he had once made concerning the Black Athlete, in which he said that Black athletes were naturally superior to whites, as they were able to jump higher than whites, citing the evidence of basketball performance to demonstrate his point.

While on vacation in the mountains of North Carolina adjacent to the mountains of Tennessee, I had the great privilege to see reports on the local TV stations of media day at the University of Tennessee. The interest of the media was not directed at the president of the university, or the unveiling of some new piece of technology or super computer, but rather it was media day for Big Orange football. Just over a week ago The Orlando Sentinel ran a series of three articles dealing with the issue of gender equity in intercollegiate athletics. For those not intimately involved with college athletics this is the hot topic currently rattling across campuses nationwide. Football coaches quake at the prospect of reduced scholarships and budgets, and curse the "extremists" from the women's movement who are threatening their opulent empires.

In addition to Reggie Jackson's entry into the Baseball Hall of Fame last weekend, the National Football League Hall of Fame had its induction ceremonies at Canton, Ohio, on Saturday. Five new members were inducted: Walter Payton, Dan Fouts, Larry Little, Bill Walsh and Chuck Noll. By any measure an impressive group.

But my favorite has always been the self-proclaimed, "Straw that Stirs the Drink." Reginald Martinez Jackson. Born May 18, 1946, in Wyncote, Pennsylvania, could stir the drink like few in the History of Baseball.

After a few weeks to digest and contemplate the events surrounding the Orlando Magic, the picture remains partly cloudy. The one thing we know for sure is that the local newspaper completely and totally failed. The Orlando Sentinel has two reporters assigned full time to cover the Orlando Magic, and several of their other reporters and columnists pride themselves on being well connected into the local sports scene. June 20, 1993 will be remembered in sport history as the day that the Chicago Bulls defeated the Phoenix Suns in the American West Arena to win the 1992-93 NBA Championship and a Three-peat. It is only the third time in NBA history a team has won the championship three years in a row.

Charles Barkley has been in our face now for several weeks with a commercial for one of those tiresome shoe companies in which he announces: "I am not a role model. I am not paid to be a role model... parents should be role models...I am paid to wreak havoc on a basketball court. Just because I can dunk a basketball doesn't mean I should raise your kids."

Compassionate Capitalism. Nice phrase isn't it. It is a phrase used in a recent book title: Compassionate Capitalism: Helping Others Help Themselves. It is also used in the name of a new Foundation: the Compassionate Capitalism Foundation, a nonprofit group based in Muskegon, Michigan. The book and the foundation are the creations of Rich DeVos, he's the boss, of the Orlando Magic.

Just over a week ago Dick Schultz resigned as the Executive Director of the NCAA, a position he has held since 1987. Schultz has been called a leader in the reform of Intercollegiate Athletics and has changed the public image of the NCAA. His resignation was prompted by the fact that the NCAA had found rules violations in the University of Virginia athletic program during the Dick Schultz years as Athletic Director there. Virginia has been placed on two years probation.

It's playoff time. In the National Hockey League and the National Basketball Association the second season, the real season, is underway. Every game now has an increased significance, and when you get to the final game of a series there is nothing else like it in sport. When both teams face elimination the level of play is raised to extraordinary heights.

The Death Of Jim Valvano, Richard C. Crepeau

Normally the Catholic Church requires a certain passage of time, as well as evidence of the performance of three miracles, before anyone is presented for canonization to sainthood. Apparently ESPN's standards are not quite that high, as the network canonized Jim Valvano last week following his death. Although Valvano had at least one miracle to his credit, the winning of the 1983 NCAA basketball championship with the miracle shot against Houston as time ran out, it still seems unlikely that he is the stuff out of which saints are made.

Over a year and one-half ago a classic American drama unfolded in Channelview, Texas, where Wanda Holloway, 37, was tried for attempted murder. The charge was that Wanda tried to hire a hit man to kill Verna Heath whose daughter Amber was pushing Shanna Holloway, Wanda's little girl, to defeat in the school cheerleading competition. This was a story that touched the hearts of all Americans.
