An Analysis: Interpersonal Conflict Resolution In Children's Television, Molly Griffith, Yared Alemu
Concordia Journal of Communication Research
Children in the United States today are consuming television at a vastly higher rate than we have seen before (Sigman, 2012). Due to this hands off approach, there has been an increase in parents' cognition of what television their children are consuming which includes both entertainment television or educational television. The researchers highlighted the importance of teaching proper interpersonal conflict resolution to children through the television they are consuming as they learn through all observations. We highlighted the types of conflicts that are depicted in the children's show Bluey which is an educational children's television series produced in Australia. Researchers …

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between The Workload And Stress Of Colleg Athletes, Sadie Voss
Concordia Journal of Communication Research
College students attending a university were asked to participate in a study regarding course workload and stress. It was found that student-athletes tend to carry more stress due to the time commitment to their sport. The researchers asked questions from a stress test to evaluate how stress impacted these students. In the survey, they factored in major, minor, credits per semester, internships, and jobs. All of these factors had a part in determining the amount of stress a student had. The study addressed in depth the relationship between a student’s course workload and the amount of stress they have which …

Participants of the study were selected to fit the three age groups needed for this study and responses were collected via electronic survey. Throughout this study, the relationship that peer influence has with mental health, positive …
Let’S Get Personal: The Influence Of Personality Type Assessments On Team Communication And Structure, Kylee Baldwin, Selena Moua, Taylor Perryman, Alyssa Hayden
Let’S Get Personal: The Influence Of Personality Type Assessments On Team Communication And Structure, Kylee Baldwin, Selena Moua, Taylor Perryman, Alyssa Hayden
Concordia Journal of Communication Research
The balance of understanding and discussing personality types is a potential advantage to the effectiveness of a team’s work ethic and communication. Working in a team with members of different personality types that know how to work well with other personality types will achieve team effectiveness more efficiently than a team with a lack of understanding on their own and others’ personality types. It is predicted that the Truity's Type Finder Personality Test on personality types will have a strong, positive impact on overall team performance and team effectiveness. In addition, it can also be predicted that the team that …

How Communication With Parents Affects The Psychological Well-Being Of Traditional First-Year University Students, Jena Thormodson, Hannah Torkelson, Benjamin Diers
Concordia Journal of Communication Research
Traditional first-year university students are experiencing one of life’s greatest transitions. For many students, they are learning how to live independently for the first time, navigate relationships and support, and deal with new experiences that happen in college. Since traditional first-year students are not considered developmentally as adults, this study sought to determine how parental communication can influence how students feel during this time of transition of both college and emerging adulthood. More specifically we measured how the frequency of communication and type of parental support can affect the student’s psychological well-being. A survey was used to gather this data …

Bridging The Gap: How The Generations Communicate, Hannah Downs
Concordia Journal of Communication Research
This study examines intergenerational communication and perception. Using the Anxiety/Uncertainty Management theory and statistical analysis, the following research questions are examined: RQ1: What is the main cause for the generational disconnect between Baby Boomers and Millennials? RQ2: How do the different generations believe they are perceived by the others? Faculty and staff at a private, religious institution in the Midwest, employees of a manufacturing company, and participants from a social media site took an online survey with questions regarding preferred communication methods, ease of communicating with other generations, and self-perception within the generational title they associate most with. The study …

How Do Communication Modalities Influence Intergenerational Communication?, April Pierce, Candace Payne
Concordia Journal of Communication Research
This cross-sectional study analyzes the rapidly developing landscape of online communications. In particular, it studies the modalities used by three generations, which include baby boomers, Gen X, and Gen Y/millennials. In addition to analyzing their preferred methods, researchers also studied the conflicting views on other generations. This was done through data collected from an online survey administered via email and social media posts. It was hypothesized that the gaps in communication styles between different generations would be significantly different than the other generations mentioned. Researchers found that while generational differences are still present among the three demographics studied, a significant …

Locking Eyes With Strangers, Jackie Kuehl, Kenitra Foote, Justin Ortt, Allison Larson
Concordia Journal of Communication Research
The topic of reactive body language and eye contact between strangers is necessary research because it differs from typical face to face relational interactions. Stranger interactions among genders and one’s eye contact are often avoided by most people, whether it’s due to the setting, awkward feelings, or one’s vulnerability. It seems like there is a common communicative trend found in Late Generation Y and Early Generation Z, is avoiding eye contact with strangers when outside of one’s comfort zone (Nemko, 2016). The lack of stranger interaction involving eye contact and its effect on society is considered in this study. The …

Other nonverbal communication behaviors were analyzed as well. These findings will allow people to be better prepared and be more conscious of what they are displaying in the interview setting in the …

Adolescent Self Esteem And Instagram: An Examination Of Posting Behavior, Anna Hill, Lamaja Denman
Concordia Journal of Communication Research
Social media is a way that people can communicate and share parts of their lives through the internet ("Social Media", n.d.). Being that the media tends to have an influence on the general public, it has an influence on adolescents as well. Sometimes this influence can be quite negative (Sanders, 2015). Because of this, exploring their connection would be insightful. This study explores how a specific social media site, Instagram, may affect adolescent girls and their self-esteem. The researchers issued a self-esteem questionnaire to a gorup of girls on their self-esteem and compared it to their Instagram profiles. In this …

Concordia Journal of Communication Research
Compliments are a part of everyday communication in American culture. While many use compliments in order to gain compliance or to show interest in further developing a relationship, underlying intentions may be different than what is perceived by the receiver. The researchers of this study investigated the difference in the motivations of compliments both given and received based on different categories. Using a survey of students at a faithbased university in the Midwest, researchers were able to gather insight into the intentions of giving compliments as well as the perception of received compliments.

Communication Quality Differences Between Legos And Minecraft, Michael Cullen, Joel Klein, Keith Crockett
Concordia Journal of Communication Research
Communication between pre-adolescent boys can be viewed as strange and unlike teen girls and “grown ups”. According to Debra Tannen (1990), “All genders strive to be understood, however young men try to communicate to remain independent.” This often leads to competition amongst the male gender. In order to test this theory, this study looks to observe if there are any differences between hands on activity communication and technology gameplay communication. The study observed 3 pre-adolescent boys trying to work together to make a house in Legos and then the boys were instructed to make a house on Minecraft. The levels …

Internet Trolls are an online subculture who participate in posting upsetting or shocking content, harassing users, and spreading false information for their own enjoyment. As of the time of this study, research is limited on the trolling culture, the perception of trolls, and trolling behavior. The researchers have investigated trolling culture, as well as conducted a study in which subjects were asked to relay their emotional reactions to a selection of online comments, and mark the comments they considered to be trolling behavior. The results were meant to discover whether subjects of different age generations differed in their perception and …
