#Reformjo: Jordanian Tweets For Social Reform, Megan Daily
#Reformjo: Jordanian Tweets For Social Reform, Megan Daily
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
What can be said in 140 characters or less? During what has been dubbed the “Arab Spring”, Twitter has been heralded as the catalyst that sparked revolutions. Tunisia, Egypt, Syria, Bahrain and others have utilized this microblogging site to express opinions, share links, and inform the world what is happening. In the past few months, the number of Jordanians on Twitter has risen sharply. During the course of my research, I aimed to discover if there were “elite users”, people whose opinions had more weight or significance in this dialogue as the Twitter community tends to develop with a distinct …
Media In Sāmoa: Journalists‟ Realities, Regional Initiatives, And Visions For The Future, Leslie Pyne
Media In Sāmoa: Journalists‟ Realities, Regional Initiatives, And Visions For The Future, Leslie Pyne
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This research investigates media freedom in Sāmoa by identifying the country‟s obstacles to freedom of expression and proposing strategies for generating change in the media industry. The paper assesses the local media initiatives of the Journalists Association of (Western) Sāmoa (JAWS), Sāmoa Observer newspaper, United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the Media and Journalism Programme at the National University of Sāmoa (NUS), and evaluates their strengths and shortcomings in providing services for the community. It also examines how journalists balance cultural sensitivity in reporting and what ideas news organizations, journalists, journalism students, and media educators have for …
Toward A Cosmopolitical Democracy: Process Over Ends, Rebecca Lea Mccarthy
Toward A Cosmopolitical Democracy: Process Over Ends, Rebecca Lea Mccarthy
Journal of International and Global Studies
“Towards a Cosmopolitical Democracy” argues that in order for cosmopolitanism to effectively challenge destructive forms of nationalism, misguided universalism, and economic globalism, it must be rearticulated conceptually and philosophically for today’s world as a cosmopolitical process rather than a set ideal or vision. This cosmopolitical process is best promoted in the realm of rhetoric and praxis, where everyday practices and values between self and collective interest are navigated using a Bakhtinian understanding of the dialogic imagination, as well as a “double process” of negotiation between the universal and the particular, both cognitively (Burke, 1970) and across cultures (Tarrow, 2005).
The Migrant Making Organization Gender, Labor And Agency In A New Migration Process, Marit Aure
The Migrant Making Organization Gender, Labor And Agency In A New Migration Process, Marit Aure
Journal of International and Global Studies
Labor migration is increasing in scale and diversity and is characterized by a new feminization. Despite these transformations, a common theme remains unchanged: immigrant workers are employed in low-skilled jobs. This study of labor migration from Russia to Norway analyzes the establishment of a new migration process, who was involved in this migration, and why this migration from Russia to Norway became dominated by women. It also discusses the situation of the Russian workers in the Norwegian labor market. Analyses of the recruitment processes show how gender, sexuality, age, marital status, education, and motherhood construct women as suitable migrants and …
Global Transmission And Local Consumption: Navajo Resistance To Mainstream American Television, Sam Pack Ph.D.
Global Transmission And Local Consumption: Navajo Resistance To Mainstream American Television, Sam Pack Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
A common assumption maintains that the global outreach of mass media inevitably leads to deleterious consequences for native communities. Indeed, different scholars have argued that awareness of the outside world from television results in the homogenization of local cultures. However, images viewed through the electronic peephole radically transform not only an understanding of the outside world, but the way indigenes define themselves and their relationship to each other. By presenting subaltern audiences with an idealized other, television compels the emergence of an objectified self. “Who are ‘we’?” would not have been asked—or asked in the same way—were it not for …

Crafting A Congregational Narrative For The College Church Of Christ In Fresno, California, Jason W. Locke
Crafting A Congregational Narrative For The College Church Of Christ In Fresno, California, Jason W. Locke
Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations
This thesis describes a ministry project in the College Church of Christ in Fresno, California. In this project I led the congregation through a narrative crafting process in order to clarify the church’s identity and increase its capacity for mission. In recent decades, the College Church moved away from some of its founding characteristics yet failed to clarify a new sense of identity. It subsequently had difficulty acting with a unified sense of purpose and instead moved increasingly toward fragmentation.
Data for crafting the new narrative came from three weeks of group interviews. My research team conducted these interviews in …
Discerning A Vocational Theology Of Marriage For The Smyrna Church Of Christ, Daniel F. Camp
Discerning A Vocational Theology Of Marriage For The Smyrna Church Of Christ, Daniel F. Camp
Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this project was to discern a vocational theology of marriage for the Smyrna Church of Christ in Smyrna, Tennessee. Through a group discernment process, the participants studied Genesis 1-3 and 2 Corinthians 5 as a basis for understanding God’s design for marriage at creation, the effects of sin on the vocational aspect of the marriage relationship, and the call of Christ for husbands and wives to participate in the resurrection life through the ministry of reconciliation. At the end of the discernment process, the participants articulated a theology statement for the church that examined our current context …
Zenga Zenga, Tente Tente: Can Tunisian Humanitarian Efforts Save And Preserve The Ideals Of The Revolution?, Ava Hess
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
“We are a part of the revolution, even if we are five or six hundred kilometers from Tunis, ” though the muggy tent I am sitting in feels like it could be much further than several hundred kilometers from the country’s capital or indeed from any city of today’s world. In fact, my mind wanders in a heat haze, it feels like it could even be on a different planet… “We are a part of it,” he repeats. Outside, I can hear the determined desert winds raise sand high up and into the clouds, covering the landscape in a filmy, …
“Instead Of Growing Under Her Heart, I Grew In It”: The Relationship Between Adoption Entrance Narratives And Adoptees’ Self-Concept, Haley Kranstruber, Jody Koenig Kellas
“Instead Of Growing Under Her Heart, I Grew In It”: The Relationship Between Adoption Entrance Narratives And Adoptees’ Self-Concept, Haley Kranstruber, Jody Koenig Kellas
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
Adoptees are partially or entirely disconnected from those involved in their birth stories, so adoptive families create adoption entrance narratives to fill that void. Scholars assert that these narratives impact adopted child well-being later in life, but that assumption has yet to be empirically tested. The goal of this study was to examine themes emerging from adoption entrance narratives (n = 105), and to then determine the impact of story content on adoptees’ self-concept. Seven themes emerged: openness, deception, chosen child, fate, difference, rescue, and reconnection. Results indicate the salience of the chosen child, negative reconnection, and difference themes …
Post-Revolutionary Effects: Political Self-Education Of Tunisian Youth, Erica Zarlenga
Post-Revolutionary Effects: Political Self-Education Of Tunisian Youth, Erica Zarlenga
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Tunisia is a country with a rich and diverse historical and cultural background that has absorbed many ideas from western thought into its political and educational systems. For many years, the Tunisian “Republic” had the appearance of a government similar to Western democracies, yet the president’s actions were very far from those of a democratically elected president. The flaws in former president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali (Ben Ali)’s government in addition to sweeping unemployment and underdevelopment were the factors which led to the major uprising that became the Tunisian revolution. Although the revolution was a great symbolic victory for …

Gender Performance In The Literature Of The Female Beats, Gillian Thomson
Gender Performance In The Literature Of The Female Beats, Gillian Thomson
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Gender Performance in the Literature of the Female Beats" Gillian Thomson examines the re-negotiation of gender boundaries within Joyce Johnson's Minor Characters and Hettie Jones's Drive poems; secondary to this is how the male Beats demonstrate a more concrete, dichotomous version of such gender categories. Thomson intend to demonstrate how the women often write themselves into Beat history and how their revised performance of gender modifies the normative tropes regarding females within the Beat enclave. The theoretical backdrop focuses on how language not only records or expresses reality, but also shapes it. This is a decidedly poststructuralist …
Osundare's Poetry And The Yoruba Worldview, Christopher Anyokwu
Osundare's Poetry And The Yoruba Worldview, Christopher Anyokwu
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Osundare's Poetry and the Yoruba Worldview" Christopher Anyokwu analyses the use of Indegienous Yoruba concepts found in Niyi Osundare's texts. Anyokwu postulates that Osundare appears to combine in his work concepts and traditions of Yoruba culture and Marxist ideology which, as Anyokwu argues, locates Osundare with other revolutionary-minded radical poets such as Pablo Neruda, Octovio Paz, Nicolas Guillén, Agostinho Neto, or Okot P'Biteke. Further, Anyokwu argues that a major aspect of the sources of Osundare's work, this perspective has either been under-theorized or examined only superficially in the critical corpus of Osundare's texts. Anyokwu both analyzes and …
Motherhood In African Literature And Culture, Remi Akujobi
Motherhood In African Literature And Culture, Remi Akujobi
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Motherhood in African Literature and Culture" Remi Akujobi analyzes the place and the role of women in African Religion and tradition and also interrogates the place of Motherhood in the production, circulation and consumption of items in African tradition. Akujobi examines Motherhood as a sacred as well as a powerful spiritual component of the woman's life. Emphasis is put on literary discourse where motherhood is a recurrent theme, where motherhood is also a lifelong commitment. The article particularly explores motherhood as a discourse in African women creative efforts. A key intention of the article is to explore …
Two Traumas One Aesthetic In Walsh's Operación Masacre And Kaufman's The Laramie Project, Henry James Morello
Two Traumas One Aesthetic In Walsh's Operación Masacre And Kaufman's The Laramie Project, Henry James Morello
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Two Traumas One Aesthetic in Walsh's Operación Masacre and Kaufman's The Laramie Project" Henry James Morello analyzes the stylistic similarities of Walsh's and Kaufman's texts. Walsh's 1957 testimonio Operación masacre was written as a response to the politically motivated violence perpetrated by the military government after the overthrow of Juan Perón, specifically the kidnapping and murder of a group of men thought to be Peronist sympathizers. In 1998 Kaufman and the Tectonic Theater Project created The Laramie Project, a play about the reactions of the people of Laramie to the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard, …
Children's Literature In South-East Europe, Milena Mileva Blažić
Children's Literature In South-East Europe, Milena Mileva Blažić
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Children's Literature in South East Europe" Milena Mileva Blažić begins with an introduction to Maria Nikolajeva's 2000 book From Mythic to Linear: Time in Children's Literature in which a theoretical framework of thematics is defined, systematized, and categorized. Nikolajeva's framework for children's literature suggests attention to characteristics through which the maturation process of becoming adult is accomplished. Following the introduction and application of Nikolajeva's concepts, Blažić first applies the frame to selected texts published in South-East Europe, followed by lists of children's book published in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, and Serbia.
Globalization, Pedagogical Imagination, And Transnational Literacy, Ezra Yoo-Hyeok Lee
Globalization, Pedagogical Imagination, And Transnational Literacy, Ezra Yoo-Hyeok Lee
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article, "Globalization, Pedagogical Imagination, and Transnational Literacy," Ezra Yoo-Hyeok Lee explores the juncture of comparative literature, globalization and postcolonial studies as to how creative writers, literary critics, and cultural theorists respond to globalization and its challenges. Arjun Appadurai expounds that globalization has demanded new research conceptualization and invention in academia. Subsequently, Lee investigates methods through which educators and scholars in comparative literature take up such a demand. In turn, Lee proposes a transnational literacy which offers a responsible form of cultural explanation, through which to explore the interrelations between the national and the postcolonial or global paradigms, both …
Tropologies Of Tradition And (Post)Modernity In Nwagwu's Forever Chimes, James Tar Tsaaior
Tropologies Of Tradition And (Post)Modernity In Nwagwu's Forever Chimes, James Tar Tsaaior
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Tropologies of Tradition and (Post)modernity in Nwagwu's Forever Chimes" James Tar Tsaaior explores Mark Nwagu's novel and postulates that the author succeeds in constructing a novelistic universe both concrete and fluid in its re-invention or re-fabrication of cultural traditions and identity formation processes. This universe is simultaneously traditional/indigenous and (post)modern. However, rather than to delineate these cultural formations through difference as oppositional categories, Nwagu suggests grounds for multicultural interactions and transactions. In this cultural schema, none of the cultures claims exclusive preserve or pre-eminence over the other as what exists is a democratic space for the …
