Virtual Reference Service In Southeastern Academic Libraries: A Study Of Availability, David L. Dehart, Ann Viles Apr 2007

Virtual Reference Service In Southeastern Academic Libraries: A Study Of Availability, David L. Dehart, Ann Viles

The Southeastern Librarian

Academic libraries are experiencing a gradual decline in the number of reference transactions. In a recent compilation of statistics for members of the Association of Research Libraries, for example, the median numbers of reference transactions reported fell from 134,944 in 1998 to 66,300 in 2005, an average drop of 4.6% per year (Kyrillidou and Young 2006). Traditional reference transactions still greatly outnumber virtual transactions in most libraries, but there is some speculation that virtual reference will overtake traditional reference in the near future. In an attempt to establish a baseline for the availability of virtual reference services in Southeastern academic …

Garbage In, Garbage Out: The Effect Of Library Instruction On The Quality Of Students’ Term Papers, Susan Hirst, Joseph Leonard Apr 2007

Garbage In, Garbage Out: The Effect Of Library Instruction On The Quality Of Students’ Term Papers, Susan Hirst, Joseph Leonard

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Abstract

The authors report the results of a study which used citation analysis of students’ term papers to determine the effectiveness of a library instruction session. The research was conducted during the 2004-2005 school year. In each semester, two sections of the same class received a library instruction session, while the third section of the class did not. Bibliographies of the students’ term papers were then examined to determine if the numbers and types of sources cited differed between the two groups. Library instruction was determined to be effective, in that students receiving library instruction were significantly more likely to …

Looking For A Link: Comparing Faculty Citations Pre And Post Big Deals, Donald Taylor Apr 2007

Looking For A Link: Comparing Faculty Citations Pre And Post Big Deals, Donald Taylor

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Abstract

Big Deals expand an institution's access to scholarly literature, with usage statistics showing that previously unavailable journals receive significant usage. To determine if faculty use these new e-journals in their research, the Simon Fraser University (SFU) Library analyzed SFU citation data to journals from selected Big Deals for two years prior to signing a major Big Deal (1993 and 1998) and for two consecutive years following the Big Deal (2004 and 2005). Pre Big Deal, the percentage of citations to journals that are part of Big Deals but were previously not subscribed to was an average of 2.6%. Post …

Multiple Roles Of Academic Librarians, Justine Alsop, Karen Bordonaro Apr 2007

Multiple Roles Of Academic Librarians, Justine Alsop, Karen Bordonaro

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Abstract

This exploratory research study seeks to investigate the phenomenon of academic librarians working in other paid roles on university campuses in addition to working as librarians. Its purpose is to explore how prevalent this phenomenon might be, to discover what other types of paid positions librarians are engaged in, and to ascertain what the perceived advantages and disadvantages could be of working in dual roles on campus. An online survey was administered and results point out that some academic librarians are engaged in working in multiple roles on campus. Furthermore, a majority of those surveyed saw a number of …

Towards Attack-Resilient Geometric Data Perturbation, Keke Chen, Ling Liu Apr 2007

Towards Attack-Resilient Geometric Data Perturbation, Keke Chen, Ling Liu

Kno.e.sis Publications

Data perturbation is a popular technique for privacy-preserving data mining. The major challenge of data perturbation is balancing privacy protection and data quality, which are normally considered as a pair of contradictive factors. We propose that selectively preserving only the task/model specific information in perturbation would improve the balance. Geometric data perturbation, consisting of random rotation perturbation, random translation perturbation, and noise addition, aims at preserving the important geometric properties of a multidimensional dataset, while providing better privacy guarantee for data classification modeling. The preliminary study has shown that random geometric perturbation can well preserve model accuracy for several popular …

Mining Minimal Distinguishing Subsequence Patterns With Gap Constraints, Xiaonan Ji, James Bailey, Guozhu Dong Apr 2007

Mining Minimal Distinguishing Subsequence Patterns With Gap Constraints, Xiaonan Ji, James Bailey, Guozhu Dong

Kno.e.sis Publications

Discovering contrasts between collections of data is an important task in data mining. In this paper, we introduce a new type of contrast pattern, called a Minimal Distinguishing Subsequence (MDS). An MDS is a minimal subsequence that occurs frequently in one class of sequences and infrequently in sequences of another class. It is a natural way of representing strong and succinct contrast information between two sequential datasets and can be useful in applications such as protein comparison, document comparison and building sequential classification models. Mining MDS patterns is a challenging task and is significantly different from mining contrasts between relational/transactional …

Automatic Composition Of Semantic Web Services Using Process And Data Mediation, Zixin Wu, Ajith H. Ranabahu, Karthik Gomadam, Amit P. Sheth, John A. Miller

Kno.e.sis Publications

Web service composition has quickly become a key area of research in the services oriented architecture community. One of the challenges in composition is the existence of heterogeneities across independently created and autonomously managed Web service requesters and Web service providers. Previous work in this area either involved significant human effort or in cases of the efforts seeking to provide largely automated approaches, overlooked the problem of data heterogeneities, resulting in partial solutions that would not support executable workflow for real-world problems. In this paper, we present a planning-based approach to solve both the process heterogeneity and data heterogeneity problems. …

Media Policy: An Overview Of The Field, Philip M. Napoli Jan 2007

Media Policy: An Overview Of The Field, Philip M. Napoli

McGannon Center Working Paper Series

Research on media technologies frequently has illustrated the tendency for new media to adopt the structural and content characteristics of established mass media. This historical pattern is the outgrowth of a confluence of a wide range of economic and institutional forces. This paper considers the impact of hyperlinking within this process of “massification.” This paper explores the mechanisms by which hyperlinking may both facilitate and impede this process and offers conclusions regarding if and how the dynamics of linking may affect the process of media evolution.

Perceived Importance And Future Use Of Online Channels Of Distribution By Small Businesses In The United States And Australia: An Exploratory Study, Irene J. Dickey, William F. Lewis, John Vanbeveren

Management and Marketing Faculty Publications

Online marketing is important to small-business owners and operators because they are typically faced with limited budgets to design and implement traditional marketing programs. This paper compares the perceived importance of specific online marketing tactics and their anticipated future use of online marketing tactics by small businesses in the United States and Australia. Results of the study reveal that both in the United States and in Australia, there is a growing use of online marketing tactics to accomplish marketing objectives. While most online marketing tactics were effective in both the United States and Australia, there were some statistically significant differences.

Semantically Annotating A Web Service, Kunal Verma, Amit P. Sheth Jan 2007

Semantically Annotating A Web Service, Kunal Verma, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

In the past few years, service-oriented architecture (SOA) has transitioned from a partially formed vision into a widely implemented paradigm, with Web services (WS) being the forerunners to implementing SOA-based solutions. But even though the current trend is to use Web services' standards-based nature to establish static connections between various components, businesses are starting to explore dynamic value-added propositions, such as reuse, interoperability, and agility.

Role Of Semantics In Autonomic & Adaptive Web Services And Processes, Amit P. Sheth Jan 2007

Role Of Semantics In Autonomic & Adaptive Web Services And Processes, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The emergence of Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) has created a new paradigm of loosely coupled distributed systems. In the METEOR-S project, we have studied the comprehensive role of semantics in all stages of the life cycle of service and process-- including annotation, publication, discovery, interoperability/data mediation, and composition. In 2002-2003, we had offered a broad framework of semantics consisting of four types:1) Data semantics, 2) Functional semantics, 3) Non-Functional semantics and 4) Execution semantics. This talk describes the need for the four types of semantics, its standards-based support through WSDL-S/SAWSDL, and the need for such semantic representation to dynamic and …

Rules Of Interchange: Privacy In Online Social Communities– A Rhetorical Critique Of Myspace.Com, Adam W. Tyma Jan 2007

Rules Of Interchange: Privacy In Online Social Communities– A Rhetorical Critique Of Myspace.Com, Adam W. Tyma

Communication Faculty Publications

As online social communities (e.g. MySpace, Facebook) grow in popularity and become commonplace, these same communities also become sites of information exchange through various communication channels (eg. text, visual, aural). With these exchanges occurring either individually or collectively, sets of questions arise regarding the community, the value of information within that community, and how/what/why they choose to communicate what they do within such a space. By applying Sandra Petronio’s Communication Privacy Management theory and Michel Foucault’s discussion of the Panopticon, a rhetorical critique of user decisions regarding private information within Myspace.Com can be conducted. The knowledge uncovered adds insight into …

Learning To Model Spatial Dependency: Semi-Supervised Discriminative Random Fields, Chi-Hoon Lee, Shaojun Wang, Feng Jiao, Dale Schuurmans, Russell Greiner

Kno.e.sis Publications

We present a novel, semi-supervised approach to training discriminative random fields (DRFs) that efficiently exploits labeled and unlabeled training data to achieve improved accuracy in a variety of image processing tasks. We formulate DRF training as a form of MAP estimation that combines conditional loglikelihood on labeled data, given a data-dependent prior, with a conditional entropy regularizer defined on unlabeled data. Although the training objective is no longer concave, we develop an efficient local optimization procedure that produces classifiers that are more accurate than ones based on standard supervised DRF training. We then apply our semi-supervised approach to train DRFs …
