Status Of Automation Of Electronic Prepress Workflow, Milos Krsmanovic Aug 2007

Status Of Automation Of Electronic Prepress Workflow, Milos Krsmanovic

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Production systems in the printing industry are not yet fully automated. Unlike other industries, such as various manufacturing industries that use assembly line production systems and Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) concepts, the printing industry is still heavily based on manual input, human judgment and creativity, especially in the area of electronic prepress production. This study analyzes the workflow practices of companies of various levels of automation and suggests best practices in automating electronic prepress workflow. The researcher disseminated the research instrument consisting of a PDF file and an online questionnaire to electronic prepress supervisors at various offset lithographic printing companies. …

Channel Management In Heterogeneous Cellular Networks, Mohammad Hadi Arbabi Aug 2007

Channel Management In Heterogeneous Cellular Networks, Mohammad Hadi Arbabi

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Motivated by the need to increase system capacity in the face of tight FCC regulations, modem cellular systems are under constant pressure to increase the sharing of the frequency spectrum among the users of the network.

Key to increasing system capacity is an efficient channel management strategy that provides higher capacity for the system while, at the same time, providing the users with Quality of Service guarantees. Not surprisingly, dynamic channel management has become a high profile topic in wireless communications. Consider a highly populated urban area, where mobile traffic loads are increased due to highway backups or sporting events. …

Digital Technologies And The Future Of Radio: Lessons From The Canadian Experience., Brian O'Neill Jul 2007

Digital Technologies And The Future Of Radio: Lessons From The Canadian Experience., Brian O'Neill

Conference Papers

This paper examines the position of digital radio in Canada. It examines the Canadian experience of digital radio development from its introduction in 1995 to the present and asks whether the approach adopted and the lessons learned provide useful models for application elsewhere. Three main strands form the background to digital radio’s current stage of development: firstly, the introduction and early support for Digital Audio Broadcasting or (DAB) in the mid 1990s; secondly, the response of the radio industry to the internet and new media as complementary to traditional radio broadcasting provision; and thirdly, the more recent experience of the …

Efficient Computation Of Iceberg Cubes By Bounding Aggregate Functions, Xiuzhen Zhang, Pauline Lienhua Chou, Guozhu Dong Jul 2007

Efficient Computation Of Iceberg Cubes By Bounding Aggregate Functions, Xiuzhen Zhang, Pauline Lienhua Chou, Guozhu Dong

Kno.e.sis Publications

The iceberg cubing problem is to compute the multidimensional group-by partitions that satisfy given aggregation constraints. Pruning unproductive computation for iceberg cubing when nonantimonotone constraints are present is a great challenge because the aggregate functions do not increase or decrease monotonically along the subset relationship between partitions. In this paper, we propose a novel bound prune cubing (BP-Cubing) approach for iceberg cubing with nonantimonotone aggregation constraints. Given a cube over n dimensions, an aggregate for any group-by partition can be computed from aggregates for the most specific n--dimensional partitions (MSPs). The largest and smallest aggregate values computed this way become …

Semantics To Energize The Full Services Spectrum: Ontological Approach To Better Exploit Services At Technical And Business Levels, Amit P. Sheth Jul 2007

Semantics To Energize The Full Services Spectrum: Ontological Approach To Better Exploit Services At Technical And Business Levels, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Services are pervasive in today’s economic landscape, and services- based architectures are being rapidly adopted as IT infrastructure. The need to take a broader perspective of services to include people and organizational descriptions as opposed to technical interface descriptions has already been recognized as part of an overall vision of services science [46, 100]. This article describes the Semantic Services Science (3S) model, which seeks to demonstrate the essential benefits of semantics in view of the broader vision of services science by using service descriptions that capture technical, human, organizational, and business value aspects. We assert that ontology-based semantic modeling …

A Concise History Of The Fauxtography Blogstorm In The 2006 Lebanon War, Stephen D. Cooper Jul 2007

A Concise History Of The Fauxtography Blogstorm In The 2006 Lebanon War, Stephen D. Cooper

Communications Faculty Research

Whatever the other consequences of the kinetic war between Israel and Hezbollah in the summer of 2006, it gave rise to a neologism now commonplace in the blogosphere. In the blog lexicon, fauxtography refers to visual images, especially news photographs, which convey a questionable (or outright false) sense of the events they seem to depict.i Apart from the clever word play evident in the term, it is shorthand for a serious criticism of photojournalism products, both the images and the associated text. Since accuracy is a cardinal tenet of journalistic ethics, clearly stated in the ethics code of the Society …

Reaching Out To Off-Campus Students Via BlackboardTm: A Consortial Library’S Experience, Niyati P. Pandya

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Abstract

Recent changes in information technology have opened new learning opportunities to educational institutions as they strive to serve the information and education needs of the millennial generation. More academic programs are now offered in non-traditional environments, which require a stronger focus on this generation’s information-seeking behavior. This forces librarians to undertake fresh approaches toward library instruction. According to guidelines from the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL), library resources and services “must meet the needs of all their faculty, students, and academic support staff wherever these individuals are located, whether on a main campus, off campus, in distance …

Teaching And Supporting Endnote At The University Of Tennessee: Designing Online Alternatives To High Demand Classes, Teresa B. Walker, Jane S. Row, Travis Dolence

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Abstract

The University of Tennessee Libraries, like many libraries, has taken the lead on campus in teaching the use of bibliographic management software. One of the challenges of bibliographic instruction is conveying to the user that the instruction is relevant. The challenge we faced with bibliographic instruction for EndNote was somewhat different. Our users, mainly faculty and graduate students, did see the importance of our instruction to their research. The popularity of the classes created a demand that was difficult to meet by classroom instruction alone. We addressed this problem with the creation of an online tutorial that provides on-demand, …

Evidence-Based Anything: Priorities For Librarians, T. P. Hutchinson, A. J. Meier Jul 2007

Evidence-Based Anything: Priorities For Librarians, T. P. Hutchinson, A. J. Meier

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Abstract

This paper discusses the key ideas that librarians need to know about the movement for “evidence-based” policy and practice. The most important is the methodological quality of research, particularly the importance of randomized controlled experimentation in estimating the effectiveness of interventions. In the early stages of the spread of evidence-based ideas into a new area, librarians will have clients who have a limited appreciation of these ideas, and who may not be clear about the different interpretations of this phrase (e.g., specifically referring to the pre-eminence of randomization, versus a wish for some empirical data). It may also be …

Quo Vadis, Cs? – On The (Non)-Impact Of Conceptual Structures On The Semantic Web, Sebastian Rudolph, Markus Krotzsch, Pascal Hitzler Jul 2007

Quo Vadis, Cs? – On The (Non)-Impact Of Conceptual Structures On The Semantic Web, Sebastian Rudolph, Markus Krotzsch, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Conceptual Structures is a field of research which shares abstract concepts and interests with recent work on knowledge representation for the Semantic Web. However, while the latter is an area of research and development which is rapidly expanding in recent years, the former fails to participate in these developments on a large scale. In this paper, we attempt to stimulate the Conceptual Structures community to catch the Semantic Web train.

A Semantic Framework For Identifying Events In A Service Oriented Architecture, Karthik Gomadam, Ajith Harshana Ranabahu, Lakshmish Ramaswamy, Amit P. Sheth, Kunal Verma

Kno.e.sis Publications

We propose a semantic framework for automatically identifying events as a step towards developing an adaptive middleware for Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Current related research focuses on adapting to events that violate certain non-functional objectives of the service requestor. Given the large of number of events that can happen during the execution of a service, identifying events that can impact the non-functional objectives of a service request is a key challenge. To address this problem we propose an approach that allows service requestors to create semantically rich service requirement descriptions, called semantic templates. We propose a formal model for expressing …

Digital Radio Policy In Canada: Fragmentation Or Evolution Of The Medium, Brian O'Neill Jul 2007

Digital Radio Policy In Canada: Fragmentation Or Evolution Of The Medium, Brian O'Neill

Conference Papers

In December 2006, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) issued its review of Digital Radio Policy. This replaced the transitional digital radio policy of 1995, and sought to implement a framework designed to support multi-platform digital radio broadcasting in an increasingly complex technological environment for the medium. Drawing on policy analysis, interviews and expert group perspectives, this paper traces the background to the legislative provision for digital radio development in Canada. While Canada was an early adopter of the Eureka-147 or Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), the policy of DAB as a replacement technology approach proved to be mistaken. Subsequent …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In 2005, the authors of this essay led the development and launch of SMU's (Singapore Management University) first e-learning package on 'Knowledge Management'. This package has been integrated into the overall teaching strategy, thereby fulfilling the University's mission to be "committed to an interactive, participative and technologically-enabled learning experience"

Since its inception in 2000, SMU's educational and administrative practices are modelled after American institutions, in particular the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. To support SMU's unique pedagogy, wireless technology for mobile computing is a central feature at SMU.

Against this background, the paper presents a self-critical and reflective …

Relationship Web: Realizing The Memex Vision With The Help Of Semantic Web, Amit P. Sheth Jun 2007

Relationship Web: Realizing The Memex Vision With The Help Of Semantic Web, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Relationship Web takes us from "which document" could have information I need to "what's in the resources" that gives me the insight and knowledge I need for decision making. Dr. Vannevar Bush outlined his vision for Memex in a 1945 Atlantic Monthly article [1]. Describing how the human brain navigates an information space in what he called trailblazing, Dr. Bush said, "It operates by association. With one item in its grasp, it snaps instantly to the next that is suggested by the association of thoughts, in accordance with some intricate web of trails carried by the cells of the brain." …

Runtime Support Of Speculative Optimization For Offline Escape Analysis, Kevin Cleereman, Michelle Cheatham, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan Jun 2007

Runtime Support Of Speculative Optimization For Offline Escape Analysis, Kevin Cleereman, Michelle Cheatham, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan

Kno.e.sis Publications

Escape analysis can improve the speed and memory efficiency of garbage collected languages by allocating objects to the call stack, but an offline analysis will potentially interfere with dynamic class loading and an online analysis must sacrifice precision for speed. We describe a technique that permits the safe use of aggressive, speculative offline escape analysis in programs potentially loading classes that violate the analysis results.

Paraconsistent Resolution For Four-Valued Description Logics, Yue Ma, Pascal Hitzler, Zuoquan Li Jun 2007

Paraconsistent Resolution For Four-Valued Description Logics, Yue Ma, Pascal Hitzler, Zuoquan Li

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we propose an approach to translating any ALC ontology (possible inconsistent) into a logically consistent set of disjunctive datalog rules. We achieve this in two steps: First we give a simple way to make any ALC based ontology 4-valued satisfiable, and then we study a sound and complete paraconsistent ordered-resolution decision procedure for our 4-valued ALC. Our approach can be viewed as a paraconsistent version of KAON2 algorithm.
