Comedy has a special role in helping societies manage crisis moments, and the U.S. media paid considerable attention to the proper role of comedy in public culture after the 9/11 tragedies. As has been well documented, many popular U.S. comic voices were paralyzed in trying to respond to 9/11 or disciplined by audiences when they did. This thesis examines the television reporters' verbal depictions of two rescue events, the rescue of Jessica McClure in 1987 and the rescue of three whales at Pt. Barrow, Alaska in 1988, in order to discover what rhetorical techniques were used to appeal to the public interest. Analog criticism, metaphorical analysis and pentadic analysis were used to discover the dominant language reporters chose. Three main conclusions were drawn from this analysis: (1) use of the dramatistic pentad showed how reporters focused public attention away from the purpose,(2) verbal and visual depictions cannot be separated when studying television news stories and (3) …

It was the purpose of this study (1) to investigate the radio listening and television viewing habits of seventh, eighth; and ninth-grade students at Daniel Webster Junior High School, Stockton, California, (2) to determine whether there was a relationship between grades received at school and the amount of time spent listening to the radio and/or watching television; and (3) to show whether there was any direct application of radio listening or television viewing in their academic work.
