The Social Presence Of Jibo, Parisa Farhadi Jan 2019

The Social Presence Of Jibo, Parisa Farhadi

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This research is an attempt to investigate how a social robot is perceived by users at the first encounter. And to find out whether a social robot like Jibo is understood merely as a kind of a technological object or a social entity. Previous studies in Human-Robot Interaction have considered social presence as a mediator in users’ social responses toward robots; however, the focus of this study is the social presence itself and investigates whether Jibo produces a sense of presence during initial encounters. To this end, the current study examines individuals’ perceptions of and responses to Jibo. Participants (N=8) …

Cultivating Out Of Class Communication Through Facebook, Daniel M. Galloway Jan 2019

Cultivating Out Of Class Communication Through Facebook, Daniel M. Galloway

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates a possible link between a students’ willingness to engage in out of class communication (OCC) with an instructor and the level of mediated immediacy that the instructor presents through his/her online presence. The hypotheses were that students viewing a Facebook page would be more willing to engage in OCC than those viewing an institutional web page with low levels of mediated immediacy and that students viewing a Facebook page would also be more willing to engage in OCC with their instructor for relationship focused reasons than those who viewed an institutional web page. While both hypotheses were …

Understanding The Interaction In Mediation Caucuses: Negotiation Positions, Disputant Assessments, Bias And Neutrality, Angela Cora Garcia Jan 2019

Understanding The Interaction In Mediation Caucuses: Negotiation Positions, Disputant Assessments, Bias And Neutrality, Angela Cora Garcia

Natural & Applied Sciences Faculty Publications

Previous research on how mediation helps disputing parties to reach resolution has not addressed the interaction in caucuses (i.e. separate meetings) between mediators and individual disputants which may be held in addition to the joint mediation sessions. This discourse-analytic study of videotaped mediation caucuses reveals both constructive and potentially problematic aspects of participants’ interaction during the caucuses. While some disputants engaged in constructive actions, such as articulating their bottom line negotiating position or sharing information with the mediator which had not been revealed in the joint session, others produced negative assessments of the opposing disputants. Also, mediators’ openness in expressing …

Bordering Work In Contemporary Political Discourse: The Case Of The Us/Mexico Border Wall Proposal, Angela Garcia

Natural & Applied Sciences Faculty Publications

In this article, I use a critical discourse analytic approach to investigate how President Trump’s campaign goal to build a wall along the US/Mexico border has been discussed in United States political discourse. The data analyzed are 30 videotaped speeches and other public events which occurred between October 2016 and March 2018. These data are publicly available from the cable news channel C-SPAN’s online video archive. The analysis focuses on the communicative techniques and strategies used to persuade others and justify one’s position in the interactions and events studied. In this article, I show how the border wall proposal is …

Positive And Negative Effects Of Social Media On Adolescent Well-Being., Katie Kennedy Jan 2019

Positive And Negative Effects Of Social Media On Adolescent Well-Being., Katie Kennedy

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Social media use is rapidly growing among adolescents, studies cite that the rates of “constant use” doubled from 2015 to 2018 (Anderson & Jiang, 2018; Lenhart, 2015). Social media use can have a serious negative impact on areas of well-being including feelings of depression, anxiety, fear of missing out, body image, bullying and sleep. Mojtabai, Olfson and Han (2016) cite the problematic use of mobile phones and social media applications as one of the trends aligning with the increase in major depressive episodes. Conversely, use of social media can promote positive feelings of well-being including creating a sense of community, …

Undoing Gender: An Analysis Of How Women Communicate Within The Agricultural Industry, Shala R. Larson Jan 2019

Undoing Gender: An Analysis Of How Women Communicate Within The Agricultural Industry, Shala R. Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent history, women have entered more business-like positions in the agricultural industry. This thesis seeks to understand how women in agriculture describe their workplace communication and whether they feel they are part of a muted group. Twelve women were interviewed regarding their experiences as women in agriculture and were asked whether they feel valued in their positions and how they communicate with their male co-workers. Specifically, interviewees were asked if they ever felt the need to alter their communication to complement, emulate, or otherwise adjust to masculine communication styles. The majority of women interviewed reported having to strategically choose …

Evaluating And Improving Consumer Perceptions Of The Agriculture Industry, Katelyn Berndt Jan 2019

Evaluating And Improving Consumer Perceptions Of The Agriculture Industry, Katelyn Berndt

Schultz-Werth Award Papers

Consumer perceptions of the agriculture industry are increasingly important as alternative labeling and non-conventional options become more common. Consumers are seeking a more dominant role in the conversation about their food. This study explores how the agriculture industry can respond in a way that improves consumer perceptions and builds trust. The study also seeks to answer the question of whether country of birth or background affects consumer perceptions of agriculture. The research model includes a QuestionPro survey completed by students at South Dakota State University, representing consumers in the Millennial generation who are more likely to respond positively to transparent …

Narratives Of Industry Responses To Cyberbullying: Perspectives On Self-Regulation From And About The Industry, Tijana Milosevic, Brian O'Neill, Elisabeth Staksrud Jan 2019

Narratives Of Industry Responses To Cyberbullying: Perspectives On Self-Regulation From And About The Industry, Tijana Milosevic, Brian O'Neill, Elisabeth Staksrud

Books/Book chapters

In this chapter, we provide an overview of narratives about online inter- mediaries’ responses to cyberbullying from the perspectives of policy makers and the companies, as well as children and parents. Relevant self-regulatory and self- organisational efforts are discussed aswell as the rationales for their adoption; includ- ing how the effectiveness of these efforts is seen from the perspectives of various stakeholders. We draw attention to the relative paucity of data on effectiveness of companies’ mechanisms, particularly from the perspective of any benefits received by children as a result of these interventions and support.

Let’S Talk Sports: An Egocentric Discussion Network Analysis Regarding Nfl Crisis Perceptions, Jennifer L. Harker Jan 2019

Let’S Talk Sports: An Egocentric Discussion Network Analysis Regarding Nfl Crisis Perceptions, Jennifer L. Harker

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

This egocentric discussion network analysis examines American sports fans’ crisis perceptions regarding four National Football League (NFL) crises. The purpose of this research was to examine how stakeholders’ perceptions of sport-related crises are communicated within the rhetorical arena. This research addresses several lingering questions regarding the influential role of sport identification, fan communication behavior, and social relationships among sports fans in the development of crisis perceptions. The situational crisis communication theory (SCCT) model is extended by applying it to sport crisis and the network perspective. In sum, this sport crisis egocentric discussion network, driven by functional specificity hypothesis, enabled an …

Clinical Social Workers, Gender, And Perceptions Of Political Participation, Jason Ostrander, Janelle K. Bryan, Shannon R. Lane Jan 2019

Clinical Social Workers, Gender, And Perceptions Of Political Participation, Jason Ostrander, Janelle K. Bryan, Shannon R. Lane

School of Social Work Faculty Publications

Political participation to create social change is considered a professional and ethical imperative for social workers. Although researchers have examined overall political participation by social workers, little is known about how clinical social workers participate and the broader societal factors that influence their political participation. A critical phenomenological methodology was used with a sample of 23 clinical social workers from New England states to (1) identify how socio-political forces influenced their political activity; and, (2) understand how the concept of power affected individuals’ level of engagement or inclination toward the political process. This article describes one of the study’s major …

Bet You Can’T Eat Just One: Binge Eating Disorder Promotion In American Food Advertising, Debbie Danowski

Communication, Media & The Arts Faculty Publications

"Eat Like Andy“; "What Would You Do For A Klondike Bar?“ For well over a century, American food manufacturers have been competing for consumers’ attention through the use of catchy jingles, iconic characters and celebrities. At the same time, the products being advertised contain greater amounts of addictive ingredients, which encourage binge eating resulting in an unprecedented obesity epidemic. Combine this with the full-scale commercialization of the culture today“. Jhally identifies and the powerful impact of food advertisements becomes clear as does the need to evaluate these ads. As Kilbourne noted nearly a quarter of a century ago, the majority …

Examining Shared Understanding And Team Performance In Global Virtual Teams, Alva Bullard Jan 2019

Examining Shared Understanding And Team Performance In Global Virtual Teams, Alva Bullard

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Modern organizations face many significant challenges because of turbulent environments and a competitive global economy. These competitive demands have forced many organizations to increase levels of flexibility and adaptability through the use of virtual environments, and global teams are prevalent in business organizations. Although significant research has been conducted on virtual teams, the development of shared understanding among the members of these teams has not been studied adequately. Time/space barriers, communication complexities, and team diversity hinder the development of shared understanding in these teams.

Based on the Media Synchronicity Theory (MST), a new theoretical model was created that used the …
