An Analysis Of Females In The Media, Nina Buckingham, Kayla Kucala
An Analysis Of Females In The Media, Nina Buckingham, Kayla Kucala
Concordia Journal of Communication Research
In society today, the media plays a major role in our daily lives. With new websites and apps coming out every day, there is continued exposure to social media. With ideal body image being a very relevant topic of discussion and the popularity of social media, it is possible that there could be a correlation. This study explored this possible correlation and went into further detail on the relationship between social media and females and their effect on interpersonal communication.
“The Glory Of Each Generation Is To Set Its Own Precedent”: Belva Lockwood And The Rhetorical Construction Of Female Presidential Plausibility, Emily B. Paup
Strategic Communication Studies Faculty Publications
This study seeks to understand the rhetorical tactics of Belva Bennett Lockwood, the first woman to run a campaign for U.S. President. Lockwood attempted to make a female presidential candidacy seem plausible by framing her actions as culturally expected, befitting for a woman, and prototypical for future female politicians. Through her use of rhetorical eikos, she seemed to suggest that female political leadership was not just probable but needed in the political culture of the time. A close reading of her campaign speeches and writings reveals the potential of eikotic logos to present a female presidential candidacy as innate, and …
An Experimental Examination Of Binge Watching And Narrative Engagement, Sarah E. Erickson, Sonya Dal Cin, H. Byl
An Experimental Examination Of Binge Watching And Narrative Engagement, Sarah E. Erickson, Sonya Dal Cin, H. Byl
Communication Faculty Research
Increasingly, audiences are engaging with media narratives through the practice of binge watching. The effects of binge watching are largely unknown, although early research suggests binge watching may be motivated by a need for escape and could be associated with some qualities of addiction. In this study, we ask whether the practice of binge watching impacts audience engagement with a media narrative. Using an experimental approach, we manipulate the format of exposure to media narratives (binge or nonbinge) and test the effect of this manipulation on audience engagement, specifically parasocial relationships with favorite characters and narrative transportation. Results suggest that …
Rapper Gai, Style And Hegemony In China: Examining A Transformation From Jianghu Liu To Xinhua Liu, Zhaoxi Liu
Rapper Gai, Style And Hegemony In China: Examining A Transformation From Jianghu Liu To Xinhua Liu, Zhaoxi Liu
Communication Faculty Research
Unlike several studies on rap musicians and the lyrics of their songs, this study examines both obvious and obtuse meaning embedded in the styles of Chinese Rapper, GAI, and their implications for hegemony in his country. Following state censorship, GAI changed his style from that of a gangster to a patriot. On the surface, the style change indicates sustaining the hegemony upheld by the CCP (Chinese Communist Party). However, this study argues that the state crackdown on hip hop culture, its styles included, engenders a paradox for hegemony in China.
Social Aspects Of Food-Sensitive Adults, Jean Elizabeth Duane
Social Aspects Of Food-Sensitive Adults, Jean Elizabeth Duane
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
People living with food-related illnesses find themselves subjugated by commonly held ideologies causing awkwardness in social situations. The current study is a qualitative analysis addressing how people with celiac disease (CD) navigate social situations in light of dominant beliefs that influence behaviors. Initially, I identify macro-level patriarchal, religious, sexist, ableist and etiquette-related commensality ideologies that disadvantage those with CD. Drawing from the communication narrative sense making (CNSM) theory that supports storytelling and memorable messages as a sense-making tool for individuals diagnosed with chronic illness and their family members, this work highlights retrospective stories and memorable messages from 20 randomly selected …
Julia De Burgos, Embodied Excess, And (Un)Silenced Memory: A Decolonial Feminist Analysis Of Performances Of Resistance, Sara Johanna Baugh
Julia De Burgos, Embodied Excess, And (Un)Silenced Memory: A Decolonial Feminist Analysis Of Performances Of Resistance, Sara Johanna Baugh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
My dissertation makes an argument for a decolonial move in rhetorical memory studies to more ethically account for the ways in which colonized women in the Global South, like Puerto Rican poet and revolutionary Julia de Burgos, have resisted the trauma colonization has systemically wrought against gendered, raced, and classed bodies. Building from a decolonization methodology, and theoretically situating my argument in Chicana, Latina, and decolonial feminisms, I argue Burgos's poetry both bears faithful witness to the violence of US imperial rule and articulates the dangers of a Puerto Rican nationalist movement built on a Spanish colonial foundation. Approaching Burgos …

Making Meaning Of Media Development Today, Margaretha Geertsema-Sligh
Making Meaning Of Media Development Today, Margaretha Geertsema-Sligh
Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication
This article aims to fill a gap in the academic literature on how employees at a mediadevelopment intermediary construct meaning of their work. Based on in-depth interviewswith 18 employees of Internews, this research shows that employees believe theorganization has “evolved” from the past to include the entire “information ecosystem”today. Themes that emerged include a focus on information as a solution, an emphasis onlocal communities, the desire to give voice to marginalized communities, and a practiceof listening. Interviewees strictly adhered to official narratives of their work and tocontemporary development orthodoxy, perhaps because of group think and participantbias. Despite these narratives, we …

Media And Social Media Best Practices For Feminist Activist Groups And Organizations, Arien Rozelle
Media and Communication Faculty/Staff Publications
Feminist organizations and activist groups from the Women’s Suffrage movement to the Women’s March have utilized media relations tactics and techniques to share organizational messages. Over time, the art of media relations has evolved from a tactical role to a strategic necessity, one that is vital to the success of any activist organization or group as they seek to inform, educate and/or persuade their intended audience through the use of media and social media.

Honor's First-Year Curriculum Institute: Reflection, Angelina Burkhart
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
The Honor’s First Year Curriculum Institute, composed of a team of faculty members from multiple disciplines at CSUSB, aimed to re-conceptualize the Honor’s curriculum by examining and revising existing course objectives and integrating student-centered approaches surveyed from pedagogy literature. The team had some clear goals driving the decisions we made, both within and across the “Golden Four” courses. The weeklong institute focused on three of the “Golden Four” courses, which included HON 1100 (Writing Rhetorically), HON 1200 (Thinking Critically), and HON 1300 (Communicating Orally). Goals driving the design of these three courses, in regard to general and course-specific guidelines, included …
