New Media, Old Criticism: Bloggers' Press Criticism And The Journalistic Field, Tim P. Vos, Stephanie Craft, Seth Ashley Oct 2012

New Media, Old Criticism: Bloggers' Press Criticism And The Journalistic Field, Tim P. Vos, Stephanie Craft, Seth Ashley

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Bourdieu's field theory suggests that the rise of the Internet and blogs could generate a shift in the journalistic field – the realm where actors struggle for autonomy – as new agents gain access. This textual analysis of 282 items of media criticism appearing on highly-trafficked blogs reveals an emphasis on traditional journalistic norms, suggesting a stable field. Occasional criticisms of the practicability of traditional norms and calls for greater transparency, however, may suggest an emerging paradigm shift.

Beyond The Research/Service Dichotomy: Claiming All Research Products For Hiring, Evaluation, Tenure, And Promotion., Laura L. Ellingson, Margaret M. Quinlan

Gender and Sexuality Studies

As qualitative communication researchers, we encounter daily stories of the persistent reluctance in the academy to vaue work that steps outside of the traditional report format for hiring, evaluation, tenure, and promotion. Devalued genres include writing for the general public (e.g. op-eds, blogs), embodied performancees, reports for community organizations, and non-profit website material. Yet dismissing these "other" necessary creative products of our research reinforces a dichotomy between research and service. Although the former is valued almost exclusively as legitimate scholarship and its boundaries carefully patrolled, the latter is devalued and disparaged, ironically amid increased demands for such work as resources …

Framing Messages Of Democracy Through Social Media: Public Diplomacy 2.0, Gender, And The Middle East And North Africa, Lara Lengel, Victoria Ann Newsome

School of Media and Communication Faculty Publications

This study examines how U.S. public diplomacy directed toward the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and public diplomacy from the MENA to other regions, including the U.S., uses social media. It analyzes how messages regarding recent events in the MENA are constructed for Western audiences, how public diplomacy rises from this construction, and the resulting the benefits and challenges within intercultural communication practice. Utilizing a framework for social media flow the processes of gatekeeping are examined, from both state and non-state actors representing MENA voices, and western actors who receive those voices, to illustrate public diplomacy from the MENA …

Exploring Message Meaning: A Qualitative Media Literacy Study Of College Freshmen, Seth Ashley, Grace Lyden, Devon Fasbinder Oct 2012

Exploring Message Meaning: A Qualitative Media Literacy Study Of College Freshmen, Seth Ashley, Grace Lyden, Devon Fasbinder

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Critical media literacy demands understanding of the deeper meanings of media messages. Using a grounded theory approach, this study analyzed responses by first-year college students not currently enrolled in formal media literacy education to three types of video messages: an advertisement, a public relations message, and a news report. Students did not exhibit nuanced understandings of message purpose or sender in any of the three types of messages, and had particular difficulty distinguishing public relations and news messages. These results suggest a media literacy curriculum addressing distinctions between media formats, with emphasis on analysis of message intent and point of …

Lost In Translation Teaching, Translation, And Transliteration Of Amchi Medicine In Nepal, Hannah Mcgehee Oct 2012

Lost In Translation Teaching, Translation, And Transliteration Of Amchi Medicine In Nepal, Hannah Mcgehee

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

As both school and mentsikhang, Lo Kunphen faces the full range of issues encountered by amchi in Nepal today. Youth are migrating to the cities for work, high mountain communities are transforming into cash-economies, and the Nepali government refuses to recognize amchi medicine, making the amchi profession less and less sustainable. Lo Kunphen must work tirelessly to confront these challenges and to preserve their tradition. While trying to educate the new generation of amchi, they must reach out to foreign sponsors and to the Nepali government for support. However, these interactions cannot occur without translation. During November, 2012 the author …

Learning Disabilities And Self-Esteem, Renee I. Pandy Oct 2012

Learning Disabilities And Self-Esteem, Renee I. Pandy

All Capstone Projects

Social acceptance is pivotal in a child's life but it is harder to obtain if one has a learning disability (LD). Individuals with learning disabilities experience being ostracized, ridiculed and labeled as dumb, subnormal and slow learners by their peers. ''Leaming disabilities" is a term that's used to describe different types of learning problems. A learning disability is not a disease. Children with learning disabilities are often stigmatized and associated with failure, which lowers their self-esteem. Academic problems a child with a learning disability may experience can be a constant source of frustration, especially in the areas of reading, math, …

The Aftermath Of Aftermath: The Impact Of Digital Music Distribution On The Recording Industry, Michael Mccubbin Oct 2012

The Aftermath Of Aftermath: The Impact Of Digital Music Distribution On The Recording Industry, Michael Mccubbin

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “This article will address the impact the shift from hard-copy recordings to digital music distribution has had on the recording industry. Specifically, it will apply F.B.T. Productions v. Aftermath Records, which correctly held that a label’s relationship with third-party-digital-music-providers is that of licensor-licensee, to the modern music industry. Based on this holding, record labels need to reconsider their relationships with artists, and create new business models that rely on licensing music, rather than the traditional sale-based distribution model. The decision in Aftermath will lead to increased royalties for artists in the Digital Age. This article will analyze the impact …

Greenwash Gold 2012: Mobilizing A Grassroots Movement, Brittany Dickey Oct 2012

Greenwash Gold 2012: Mobilizing A Grassroots Movement, Brittany Dickey

Collection of Engaged Learning

Green wash Gold 2012 is a campaign that aimed to shine light on the destruction and devastation 3 sponsors of the Olympics-- BP, Dow and Rio Tinto --caused while pretending to be good corporate sponsors. These companies used the Olympics to "greenwash"1 their corporations.

The three organizations that joined together to start this campaign are The Bhopal Medical Appeal, London Mining Network, and UK Tar Sands Network.

I am interested in how Greenwash Gold 2012, a small grass roots campaign, used the 2012 Olympic Games in London to raise international awareness about issues surrounding the Olympics.

Does Paying For Online Product Reviews Pay Off? The Effects Of Monetary Incentives On Content Creators And Consumers, Andrew Stephen, Yakov Bart, Christilene Du Plessis, Dilney Goncalves Oct 2012

Does Paying For Online Product Reviews Pay Off? The Effects Of Monetary Incentives On Content Creators And Consumers, Andrew Stephen, Yakov Bart, Christilene Du Plessis, Dilney Goncalves

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We show that although incentivizing product reviews results in more helpful content, disclosing payment lowers review consumers’ product quality expectations. This effect occurs because disclosure induces doubt in product quality and persists when more objective information is available, irrespective of disclosure specificity, across product categories and even after product trial.

Practical Approaches And Proposed Strategies For Measuring Selected Aspects Of Community-Based Broadband Deployment And Use, Lisandra R. Carmichael, Charles R. Mcclure, Lauren H. Mandel, Marcia A. Mardis Oct 2012

Practical Approaches And Proposed Strategies For Measuring Selected Aspects Of Community-Based Broadband Deployment And Use, Lisandra R. Carmichael, Charles R. Mcclure, Lauren H. Mandel, Marcia A. Mardis

Library Presentations & Publications

A series of studies of rural Florida community anchor institutions have concluded that existing national measurement practices for broadband penetration, adoption, and impact are often poorly defined, confusing, or inadequate to inform decisions about community broadband deployment and adoption. As a result, local broadband initiatives may be hindered by “measurement confusion.” This article proposes the Broadband Readiness Index (BRI) with a number of broadband readiness criteria and the Community-Based Broadband Planning, Adoption, and Deployment model (CBBP) to address this confusion and position local officials to better coordinate, deploy, and use broadband locally; demonstrate how improved high-speed broadband affects their communities …

Dramaturgi Dalam Komunikasi Politik Walikota Solo Joko Widodo, Cahyadi Indrananto

JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA

This study aims to understand ways local leaders develop an interactional relationship to induce their faith on their people and voters. For the purpose of the study, …

Konstruksi Dan Reproduksi Maskulinitas Kelompok Muda Urban Kelas Menengah (Studi Fenomenologi Di Antara Penonton Drama Korea Selatan), Raden Ayu Wulantari

JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA
