Comparison Of Public Relations And News Professionals’ Usage Of Social Media In Communication Relationships, Kathy Stalbaum
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Professionals in the areas of public relations and news adopt social media extensively in their respective disciplines. Thus the focus of this study is to ascertain how social media was used in professional communication. A questionnaire sent to both journalists and public relations practitioners was distributed via email. The questions focused on professional usage (minutes and hours), identifying both professional and/or social usage. The respondents evaluated Facebook, email, texting, Twitter, FourSquare, LinkedIn, blogs and other internet sites for the following qualities: trust, value, reliability, density of information, and usefulness of information. There was special attention given to social media preference …

Crisis Management In The Workplace: A Public Relations Perspective, Rochelle Reinholt
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Over the past few years, America has seen quite a few companies go through great economic turmoil, intense product recalls (Toyota), and several other downfalls affecting different types of businesses everywhere. Companies and organizations have problems every day that do not ever seem to alter business. When a crisis occurs that can threaten the life of a company, the need for a crisis plan is imperative. Many do not realize public relations has a major role in crisis situations. Unfortunately, many businesses have no conception of the difference between a “crisis” and a “problem.” Knowledge of public relations functions can …

Don’T Let Silence Take Another Life: A Pr Campaign To Raise Carbon Monoxide Awareness, Kristyn Rein, Jessie Strauch, Ali Aljaziri, Jennifer Serketich
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
The campaign goal was designed to inform and educate the community about the risks of carbon monoxide. The objectives for a national campaign focused on raising general awareness, promoting the First Alert detectors, and rallying people around the carbon monoxide cause. To implement these objectives, key communication strategies were identified: broadcasts, parenting magazines, fire departments, hospitals, and social media. The primary strategy is to execute a communication campaign around an awareness month. Such an approach will involve fire departments, broadcasts, parenting magazines, a logo and slogan – “Don’t Let Silence Take another Life” – to represent the carbon monoxide campaign. …

Determinants Of Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking And The Urgent Need For A Global Cultural Shift, Karen M. Hoover
Determinants Of Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking And The Urgent Need For A Global Cultural Shift, Karen M. Hoover
Senior Honors Theses
In the United States, an overtly selfish and sexual culture contributes to the spread of human trafficking, thereby requiring a complete culture shift in order to diminish this modern day slavery initiated by the aberrant culture. Sex trafficking of minors in the United States encompasses a variety of factors that facilitate the bondage and brutal enslavement of American children. These children are bought and sold hundreds of times, with no regard for their personal well-being. Major factors such as demand, vulnerability, and America’s induced culture of sex serve to increase the environment that trap children and youth in commercial sexual …

Festival of Communities: UG Symposium (Posters)
This presentation will explore research into gender and sexuality in anime and manga as compared to popular U.S. displays of gender and sexuality using a brief historical and cultural contextual background on manga and anime. I will discuss a comparison between U.S. and Japanese gender and sexual depictions in anime/manga and popular American media. Lastly, I discuss the potential for anime and manga in exploring gender and sexuality in U.S. studies, as well as my current, ongoing research with individuals in anime/manga groups
Adaptation Of The Nevada Climate Change Data Portal Web Interface To Small-Screen Mobile Devices, Tsvetan Komarov
Adaptation Of The Nevada Climate Change Data Portal Web Interface To Small-Screen Mobile Devices, Tsvetan Komarov
Festival of Communities: UG Symposium (Posters)
Robust and convenient access to the Nevada Climate Change Data Portal is vital for the project’s success, because of the researchers’ need to gather and analyze large volumes of data with minimal effort. However, the current version of the data portal web interface is not optimized for small-screen mobile devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, iPads, NetBooks, and others. The proposed research will address this issue by exploring the current methods for creating a client-aware web interface adaptable to the variety of small-screen devices, designing and implementing the most appropriate solution, and finally, user testing of the implemented solution.

Secular Salvation: Sacred Rhetorical Invention In The String Theory Movement, Brent Yergensen
Secular Salvation: Sacred Rhetorical Invention In The String Theory Movement, Brent Yergensen
Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
String theory is argued by its proponents to be the Theory of Everything. It achieves this status in physics because it provides unification for contradictory laws of physics, namely quantum mechanics and general relativity. While based on advanced theoretical mathematics, its public discourse is growing in prevalence and its rhetorical power is leading to a scientific revolution, even among the public. By presenting a history of continual discovery of extra dimensions, string theory proponents draw upon key thinkers in physics such as Theodor Kaluza and Albert Einstein and frame them as pioneers for the emergence of string theory.
